Hey, big time Dirty Loops fan here, and I had a blast listening to this crazy cover with you ☺️ You wondered about Cory Wong, and yeah, he is an amazing funk guitarist in his own right. Totally worth diving into his catalog. He plays with many great musicians, including Victor Wooten and also with the funk band Vulfpeck, amongst many others. The horns include members of the famous Hornheads who toured, recorded and performed with Michael Jackson, Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder, Prince and many other greats. During the COVID years Cory approached Dirty Loops and asked if they wanted to do some songs together. Why not, said Jonah. Turned out Cory had a whole album in mind. Their collaboration resulted in “Turbo”, an incredible collection of funky, more or less horn-heavy tracks, four of them with music videos. This being the COVID years and with travel restrictions in place, the two bands couldn’t meet, let alone rehearse together. So they did everything via Skype/FaceTime/etc. Even the video was filmed in two segments by both bands on two different continents. Both bands got identical props, carpets, lighting, agreed on the same camera and lighting angles, etc. Cory filmed in the US, the Loops in Sweden. Aron, their drummer, later edited all the footage together to make it look like both bands are playing on the same stage. They had not met each other in person at that stage. Even the three Loops did, due to COVID lockdowns at the time, most of their communicating (sending of music files, discussion of arrangements etc.) via phone/Skype. There is an interesting podcast on Cory’s channel “Cory & The Wong Notes” where he talks to Henrik Linder about those times and the making of this album, and the challenges and fun they had with it. Taking a classic MJ hit like Thriller and swinging it in 12/8 is a heist in itself 😉 Glad you both liked it and duly had your minds blown 🤣 The horns and Cory are hanging back a bit in this one, but surely get to shine on some of the other tracks from this album. Check out “Follow the Light” and “Turbo”, the title track from the same album 🔥🔥 For some other Dirty Loops awesomeness, check out “Next To You”, and simply everything else they’ve ever done. Mad mad stuff, all of it. 🙏
Forgot to mention that I appreciate the way you both introduce this track by paying homage to some background information on the band. It’s respectful, in my view. And although I’m dying for you to get into the track, it puts the whole thing into some kind of perspective. After all, I’m after a reaction or analysis, not just listening to the music itself (which I have done plenty of times; out of the three-plus million views, about one million are from me 🤣) So thanks for that guys 🙏
After seeing my beloved Tower of Power 106 times live, knowing they are winding down after 55 years and bands like these are the running with the torch - makes me have hope for the future of music
Mike Nelson, the Hornheads' trombonist and arranger, is a GENIUS (in VERY capable company!) His work here on the double-bell euphonium deserves mention, as does Kenny Holman's sax/flute/clarinet triple threat! 🙏
Thanks for this reaction. I really love this way funkier version of Thriller, and that horn section is to die for. Love the way they switch up the sound in the interlude by changing instrumentation to the softer sounds of flugelhorns, flute, and clarinet. And the double-bell euphonium is just such a fun touch as well. One major reason for the difference in the bass line is the different time signature. The original is in 4/4, while this is in 12/8. Gotta love the way Dirty Loops do covers. 😁 If you want to see more of that horn section you could always check out some of the other songs from the collab album they did together. "Foilow the Light" has vocals and can also be found on Dirty Loop's channel, while "Turbo" and "Ring of Saturn" are instrumentals and can be found on Cory Wong's channel.
Wow, Lotta! That softer sound in that middle section, brought on by the change of instruments, -I never thought of that, and it’s so true. This whole section tho reminds me of a journey through music history, going from a late classical (Strauss/Wagner) kinda style to big band jazz and finally coming out the other end with that Stevie Wonder-era sound. Whatever the arranger had in mind, it’s brilliant with the way tension and release has been created here… ☺️
The prominence and originality of the 12/8 bass line suggests Henrik came up with the shift of time signature. But I guess it could just as well have been Jonah mucking about with a synth bass, like he did on his cover of Bad. Or Aron. Or funk meister Cory. But the point is, someone came up with that bass line and ran with it. The musical idea predates the abstract theoretical idea. Typically.
@@hackapump Yeah, who knows. It definitely is someone in Dirty Loops though, as they've said that they already had their contributions to the album (Follow the Light, Thriller, and Hästråtta) mostly done when Cory contacted them about the collab, and decided to use them for that. My guess would be on Aron, as they've also said that he's mostly the one to come up with rhythmic ideas, and also quite often is the one to write some of the bass lines (which is the explanation Henrik gives for some of them being quite unorthodox for bass). 😁
Fun fact: The Dirty Loops boys were in a different studio in a different Country. Cory Wong and everyone else were in the states. Video and audio should win an award for this! This was done during quarantine..
The two bands were filmed in separate locations and mixed together. Cory and the DL bassist are looking at people off stage which makes it seem like they’re looking at one another.
Life is a party (livet är en fest) - and Dirty Loops really makes it a party! ;-) Please keep your reactions to Dirty Loops coming. At your last reaction I said, I wouldn't recommend anything specific - but... A couple of my favorites: "Breakdown", "Rock you", "World on fire", "Wake me up" (another coversong) - or for something a bit different "Die for you"
This song was done with over 3000 miles apart. The Loops were in Sweden and Cory was in the US. They duplicated everything so it looked as if they were together.
As you may have noticed, we're not just fans here, we're proud DL nerds. Every arrangement, every tongue in cheek turn. Every song is a class in itself and humble students are most rewarded. Also, the band guys are supercool and share their knowledge. With enough exposure, you just can't not love them. Dig in the older tracks and you'll find treasure too. Cheers, great reaction
Cory is very much a funk player, and in funk the guitar is typically as much a percussion instrument as it is a tonal instrument. Like in this song - he’s mostly just producing 16th notes, adding to the groove like a percussionist, and the actual notes are secondary. (That’s probably why you have a hard time hearing it, you’re listening for tonal content, but he is grooving). He has his own band, Cory & The Wong Notes, but he is probably best known as a member of funk band extraordinaire Vulfpeck. Both are highly recommended, but Vulfpeck is required listening, in my humble opinion. Incredible musicians, great music.
Cory Wong is the guitarrist of Vulfpack and these horns are from his band, the Wong Notes. They are Not in the same room or even same continent in this video
Enjoyed to enjoy this with you 😊👍 I would do Next To You Follow The Light World On Fire Breakdown Rock You Hit Me Ring Of Saturn Turbo Lost In You... ... and I guess the list goes on. They're brilliant. Thank you, both. Cheers!
Great reaction! Next “Follow the light” seems obvious, then Next to you. I really like the short instrumental pieces Aron and Henrik did for fun in Songs for lovers, such as Pink power, Bitten by the kitten, and Old Armando had a farm, and Coffee break is over, where Jonah joins in on keyboard (wobbling on a drum). Their old covers are amazing in their own right, and their first hit, Hit me, is as well. Breakdown is a slow piece, World on fire and other showcase Henrik’s abilities in a lovely way. I don’t really know music, but I do sense that Dirty Loops are special, fantastic, and a lot of fun!
Both Thriller and "Follow the Light", are Dirty Loops collabs with Cory Wong and the brass/woodwind section you see. Cory Wong and the brass/woodwinds filmed in the US and Dirty Loops filmed in Sweden. They stitched the two sides together in the video. Very Clever and amazing what they were able to do.
I like that they have the two bands facing each other with a space between them, yes, the horn section is part of Cory's band. There is another song that this collective did called 'Follow The Light' with an awesome Bass solo from Henrik that garners a funny dirty scowl face from the blue-haired Asian lady ❤
The fun part is that the left part of the video is in the usa, and the right part in sweden, the drummer did the video editing afterwards to make it seem like they are in the same room.
The funny thing about this video is that Dirty Loops, Cory, and the horns were all in different locations. I have not heard the complete story, but this was either video recorded at the same time or recorded individually and combined into the final video. It looks great, like they are all in the same room, but they are not.
Great review! Please check out “Songs for Lovers - Coffee Break is Over”! It’s a blast, and a bit more of a cozy one-take feel than these highly post-produced productions. “Livet är en fest!” means “Life is a party!” 😃

'guitar's not a big thing in jazz' what in the hell is he talking about? I have to wonder just how must jazz he's ever listened to.
Love how they turned it into a shuffle.

Love that comment! 👍
Pretty sure that Jonah held that long high note at the end to honor Marc Ledford from the Pat Metheny Group.
Mark Ledford 🔥
Great comment, I never thought of that, thanks 🙏
I need a bigger like button for that comment! Ledford + Blamires, talk about a vocal power house

Vulfpeck and Dirty Loops are like potato chips and ice cream. Good!
They changed the song’s beat from 4/4 to 12/8… a blues shuffle.
Cory Wong is the guitarrist of Vulfpack and these horns are from his band, the Wong Notes. They are Not in the same room or even same continent in this video
Ciao... The guy in the background plays (for few moments) a double bell euphonium... 😉
Hell yes, let's get jazzy AND spooky
Love it - and would love to hear you react to Dirty Loops original song, Follow the Light, with Cory and the same backup. It's insane.
The horns are from The Hornheads that played with Prince.
It's normaily in 4/4 , but they changed it up! :)
Enjoyed to enjoy this with you 😊👍
I would do
Next To You
Follow The Light
World On Fire
Breakdown
Rock You
Hit Me
Ring Of Saturn
Turbo
Lost In You...

Thank you, both.

@@haakonness yeah, they hadn’t even met at the time of making that video. Pretty crazy story… 😉
Dudes, the original Bass in Thriller has at least three layers. There is an explanation video by the great Bass Player Nate (Nathan) Navarro. 🧐
Yes, the original Thriller was a multilayered masterwork… all of the instrumental and vocal layers carefully crafted.
Respect to MJ and his team 🙏
not tuba.... double belled euphonium

Is that a double bell euphonium he's playing? WOW
Most of the brass section used to play for Prince... not everyday you see someone playing a euphonium. :-D
If you want good horns check the Turbo song by dirty loops and Cory Wong. Just incredible!!
Most of that horn section are from Paisley Park. Cory Wong is a rhythm guitarists, one of the best around.
That strange brass instrument is called a Bellophone. It's a baritone and a tuba in one.
Great review! Please check out “Songs for Lovers - Coffee Break is Over”! It’s a blast, and a bit more of a cozy one-take feel than these highly post-produced productions.
“Livet är en fest!” means “Life is a party!” 😃
Singer sounds like KEVIN PAIGE, "ANYTHING I WANT TO" "DON'T SHOT ME OUT"
It's a double horn euphonium.
Does anyone else think the double bell euphonium was invented by Dr. Seuss?
I’d bet on it 🤣
The Swedish line in the credits means "Life is a party"
Great video! Fun fact, Jonah (the singer) had Quincy Jones as a mentor. And if you know, Quincy produced most of Michael Jacksons greatest albums!
Yea Quincy produced the original Thriller, also helped write some of the biggest songs back then and is a legendary musician.
Dirty Loops and Cory Wong fallow the light and turbo is ones you need to check out
The horns sound like TOWER OF POWER.
I love the content hut like… LET THE VIDEO PLAYYYY
So glad you didn't skip the funny credits. Most people who react skip on the comedy gold.
"Livet e en fest" in the credits means "Life is a party"... :)
you need to listen to Follow the Light next! Best bass solo ever!!!
two-bell euphonium, soprano sax
👍
Check out Dirty Loops - World On Fire for a sweet bass solo...love your channel btw
Depends on the fusion you listen to...There are tons of great jazz guitarists..my fav is Allan Holdsworth. He will blow your fecking mind
If you hear it Jonah sings first verse like MJ but second more like Stevie W 😊
12/8 someone say 12/8 !
Y'all have a long list of reactions, have y'all reacted to Greyson Nekrutman "Caravan"?
good choice! They would love this.
I mean, if I was covering Thriller, I might want people to know that my manager was also the man who produced the original, no? ;)
No. Guitars are OFTEN a big part of jazz. Wes Montgomery??
Pat Metheny? :)
