    Haha. Y’all wait for humidity and dew to bale the hay to keep it from being too dry, and here in the southeast we fight to keep the hay from being too wet. Usually have about a 5 day window at the most to get it done before the next rain too. Looks like it makes a pretty nice bale. We still crank them out with a 1985 Deere baler.

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When its really hot and dry you can’t get the bale started, the hay just spins around inside the belts, makes a mess and thats about it!

    I drive truck, and I sometimes haul hay. One of our main outbound in summer and fall is 4'x6' round bales of organic. I very much prefer to haul hay (and straw) that has been baled with a newer machine that rolls a tighter core. The older balers that make sloppy, loose cores don't ride as well on the trailer.

    The baling looks really easy but it's the computer I'd have a problem with possibly. I had no idea that little humidity if preferable to bale. Glad you have that in the day at times. If it rains in the night, do u have to postpone baling the following day when it doesn't rain or can you still bale if the crop is damp?

    • @PetersonFarmBros
      @PetersonFarmBros  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, we usually have to wait a day if it rains! This alfalfa was rained on so it doesn't look the greatest.

      @@PetersonFarmBros Thank you for your answer! I'm in North Central Oregon where there is quite a bit of both wheat and alfalfa farming and we don't get hardly any rain in July and not much in August either but the farms seem to irrigate when necessary at times. We just came out of almost a week straight in the 100's and are down to low 90's now which is a relief all without any moisture.

    Ye should try get a McHale baler either a fusion or the more average farm size baler,the fusion packs the bale very well and you don't have to weave along the swarth to get an even bale as it distributes it going through the knives anyway I have 27.5k bales put through my fusion 3 baler and I've never had to weave along the swarth to get an even bale

    • @brucespidle8711
      @brucespidle8711 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ciaran Creedon You have to understand that this is a 5’ wide baler and often times the hay is not heavy enough to make into full width windrows, without raking it too much and knocking too many leaves off. When that occurs, you need to weave from side to side. From my knowledge McHale doesn’t make a 5’ wide baler, but Kubota makes an excellent line up of 4’ balers, as well. Hay producers in the mid-west U.S. and Canada mostly prefer the 5’ wide bales, as they typically don’t truck them off the farm, or at least too far. The larger bales mean less bales to feed each day.

    • @brucespidle8711
      @brucespidle8711 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kristian Lindås The monitor is a terminal that pulls up the information from the control box on the baler. As long as a tractor has a sufficient battery source, should be ok.

    • @brucespidle8711

      Eat black angus Kubota purchased Kvernland in 2011. With Kubota’s backing, a great majority of the line has been upgraded, or replaced by entirely new products. Larger products, such as this BV4580, have been developed for the North American market. Trust me, Kubota is no where done developing their hay tool line up, or larger tractors.

      Jim Connolly That would be apples and oranges. The BV4580 is a 5’x6’ dry hay baler, not a 4’x5’ silage baler with chopper knives. Kubota’s BV5160 is the direct competitor for the McHale. Hay producers in the mid-west U.S. raise primarily beef cattle and prefer the larger bales, put up at lower moisture content.

    I'm disappointed in this video. You guys normally do a great job, but not this time. That hay looks like it had been down for a week and provably rained on at least once. Don't you have dairy cows? Once you see the first bloom you're 3 days late at mowing. Peak protein happens before bloom.

    • @PetersonFarmBros
      @PetersonFarmBros  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We do not have dairy cows. Putting up alfalfa for dairy is a different task entirely. For beef cattle here in Kansas (location matters), we swath at first bloom. Yes, this hay was rained on and is a 6 year old field so it's not going to look the greatest. We just picked up this field this year. That is out of our control, including the rain.
