We are a small, 200 acre dairy farm in Wisconsin and we hear enough about being a small farm. Our biggest tractor is from the 90s. However, we are also 100% debt free and we are free of any yearly operating loans and investors.

Idk. We make quite a bit on our 250 acres. We grow specialty crops so it’s 10 x the work but also 10 x the profit. Apples peaches plums strawberries blueberries raspberries blackberries and about 25 different vegetables. It’s all hand labor so it’s a pain but it sure pays off

Its about the communities too. Go to one of these towns that went from family farms to corporate farms.

They are just ghost towns. Nothing there anymore. It all hollow.

Kolton Novak you have all those acres, but you still make as much as the smaller farmers in ks. When you have to hire 10 plus people you have to pay there wages. Then 5 plus trucks so there is a lot of money to keep them on the road. The. You have to have 4 plus planters and planter tractors. There’s a good amount of money. And that’s not even a dent in there problems. I’d just farm smaller farms in my eyes. There’s a reason why Canadian farmers have the higher rate of heart attacks 😂🤣🤣

The reason "little" farmers use old equipment is it's paid for we know how to work on it and we don't go broke like the big farmers that farm 10,000+ acres

yess man that old faithful there! just give it the old whack with a hammer and she fires right up. when in doubt fire some break cleaner into the intake and you'r good. you'd be amazed what an old OG can do with some zip ties man. VS this new equipment when it brakes because it will you have to take it to the shop and get a tech to look at it just to put air in the tire or something stupid that 40 years ago was a easy fix. Oh boy and the bill, 10 grand right into my hand man. fuck that man new shit aint shit it all brakes and when it does im not going broke getting it fixed.

Thank you for this video. It was truly inspiring. I started my own farm down here in south Louisiana. I farm about 170 acres of crawfish and i hope someday to harvest rice on these properties as well. I grew up on and around small farms with older "paid for" equipment. Some of this equipment is on my TH-cam channel still working in the fields. Thank you once again for the inspiring words to the rest of us small farmers.

My grandpas parents had to sell the farm shorty after the dirty thirty’s, it was only around 200 acres here in central ks but it had some fishing ponds and a great place for parties, that’s all I want it to. It’s out in the middle of nowhere. The cops wouldn’t even go out there because it’s not worth it. From the high way going 60 plus mph on the rock and dirt roads all the way there it takes around 15 minutes😂😂😂

Unfortunately, there are a LOT of farmers who "trade up" every couple of years, and then look down their noses at the farmers who keep costs down by running older equipment. And then there are the small operations that keep getting told by the bank how to spend money. These are often the guys who eventually have to file for bankruptcy, because the banks are often somewhat coercive and tell them that they (the farmer) is obligated to spend the way they (the bank) tells them to. (I have some friends that this happened to. They're getting by, and they are banking with a different bank, but the first bank still threatens them and says that they're going to get my friends' land.)
I commend the Petersons for not letting the bank run their farm! That takes a great deal of courage, planning and hard work, and our country seems to be really short on these attributes!

I think that its actually a good reason that he has this channel and his other, so that people can see that there's lots of different farms in different areas, and some go after new equipment, and some go after expanding to allow more kids to work on the farm in the next generation, not everybody can have everything paid off on their farm and just focus on having new equipement, and also, having that many cattle is a LOT of work in itself... 2k acres is a LOT of land in all but the very rural places, and having that many cattle and doing double cropping, that in my books makes the Peterson farms a Very Large Farm/Ranch on the whole, a lot of farms could only dream of being able to support all 3 brothers as well as their father working on the same farm

Farming for us in Australia was all about lifestyle, we owned everything and it was not the latest and the fanciest machinery, but we were comfortable farmers of 2;000- acres and farmed sheep and wheat every year and never went without. A lot of farmers in Western Australia sold there farms to large foreign owned company’s and operate over 300,000 acre properties but are selling all over crops overseas and we are losing that small dedicated community farmers and our towns are all dying because the lose of the family farmer. Keep up the great work mate. 🇦🇺😀

At the point of having 10 combines going, and being willing to call a small farmer not a farmer due to having old machinery, and not a whole lot of stuff, that is when I get to the point of saying are you sure about who you are pointing fingers at, as that is the sound of a corporate farmer that doesn't care about those, and just care about showing how big corporate farms are the only way to go. At that point I will say that farming is just a job to you. I always like to say, farming is not a job, but a lifestyle.
    -A fellow small farmer.

Just ran across this channel. I love the content and thank you for all that you do ! The fact that people question the age of a farmers equipment and size of the farm , or how many acres baffles me, why does that even matter? ... Maybe those people should question the cost of land , equipment, and the actual cost to operate a farm and the hours that go into it.... I was raised on a very small produce farm in Tennessee with a Super A Farmall, 8n Ford, a 2000 Ford and 4600 Ford... if it works its good and if its paid for its even better! Thanks again!
