The "deinfluencing" trend is just rebranded "HONEST reviews" and antihauls. All have come to popularity amid waves of consumer fatigue and influencer distrust

Jordan you are my absolute favourite, I adore you! I'm autistic and my executive dysfunction issues are insane, I find personal hygiene and house cleaning almost impossible. when you come out with a video or pod episode I can clean and take care of myself so much easier. it's like a friend has come over to keep me company and it reduces my meltdowns so much! every autistic needs an ADHD comfort youtuber

You are so right about skincare. I’ve found that even when I try and do a *proper* routine and use more than a moisturizer my skin get irritated and sensitive. Unnecessary. 2. The supplement adds piss me off. I think it’s wild that people feel comfortable making all these claims about supplements with no pharmaceutical knowledge + if you do need supplements or want them it’s so much cheaper to get them from the drug store or Costco.

I think a part of it is just that it feels good to eat something "good for you". Personalised pills mailed to your door with your name on it bring more capital than just saying "enjoy a balanced diet".

Along with consumer fatigue I feel like people just can't afford things anymore amid inflation and cost of living so people are really looking for ways in which to 'save money' and not wasting their money on things deemed useless. I honestly feel like, much like you said, the difference between deinfluencing videos/tiktoks and 'things I hate' (TIH) ones are that with deinfluencing videos the question is kind of put to the audience of whether they feel they really need something (like they will mention its use or what it works similarly to) rather than with TIH videos that are just the influencer personally telling you not to buy them because they personally feel they are a waste of money. The thing with TIH videos is usually by telling you not to buy something they are at the same time telling you to get something else, just not this. Instead a better version of the this. Not don't get this or anything like it because you don't need it.
I also agree with people getting their coin but I don't see how someone doing deinfluencing content can really have any sponsorships without either pissing all over the company sponsoring them or straight up lying to their audience.
Anyways, I personally love the casualness of your podcasts and your long intros and the not as structured element of them. They're really fun to watch/listen to and I loved the conversation of this episode.

  • @micaela.herrera
    @micaela.herrera ปีที่แล้ว +4

As someone with adhd the intro is so relatable, you're totally allowed to say you have it even if you're not 'officially' diagnosed if you strongly struggle with the same symptoms.

For me, people who tell you to buy a (cheaper) alternative aren't really deinfluencing. I think it is very valuable content, as it may stop people from buying an expensive, overhyped product, but it does not stop people from buying stuff. And as you said in the part about the people who talk about products they don't like: The point of deinfluencing is partly making a point about overconsumption. And just buying something else doesn't help with overconsumption at all.
Personally, I am also fine when people who make deinfluencing content do ads. But they will have to be more picky with the brands/products they chose to support, (which is honestly something I wish all influencers would do). There are also many environmental / minimalist content creaters who take brand deals without losing their credibility.
Also, as a fellow ADHD-er I totally got the energy in this podcast. Love the rebrand: voicenotes is such an accurate title. I'm looking forward to the next episode!

I do feel like influencers should do more giveaways, I know that beauty gurus skinfluencers get sooo much makeup in every shade. There should be a scheme whereby they donate it to people studying beauty/estheticians etc, give the broke generation a leg up ya know? Instead of just draining the budget even more lol. I wanted to be a makeup artist a couple of years back but getting everything for the kit on top of the education costs really put a spanner in the works!

De-Influencing IS influencing! The thing is, influencing itself isn't the big bad! Influencing just means that people will be swayed by things you say or do - parents influence their children, teachers influence their students. We all influence each other and our friends! Even with the words we use! Like twitterspeak!
Influencing has this whole negative connotation because of misogyny. Socialites existed before influencers, but we've seen "influencers" since the dawn of time. It's just the scene that changes.
The last line of influencers were people who were misinformed about capitalism and eco-safety, but the current line, the "de-influencers" are people who are influencing with knowledge, and belief in the products they're showing/selling.
I hope this makes sense; they are still influencers, but the concept of influencing has evolved!

Soooo just wanted to say I love your content and I think you’re a…. -pardon my words- content creator!
For me personally i make the distinction between that and an influencer. Influencers build an aspirational image of themselves and they incorporate products into that aspirational lifestyle. That’s why it’s so insidious.. you don’t necessarily know you’re being sold something at all times. With content creators I enjoy what they make (video essays, recipes, fashion or financial advice etc.) and I understand that sponsorships are needed to fund that content. It’s more clearly an ad, although it does usually fit the brand of the creator.

For me personally I think a sponsor reads and influencing are two different things. When someone has a sponsorship there is a level of separation for me cuz I know they are being paid to say the thing is good. Even if they genuinely like it, my brain doesn't view it as a genuine recommendation cuz I know it's an ad. But when someone is just trying things out without a sponsorship attached and they say it's good I am more likely to believe them and feel compelled to purchase it.
That's why the Mikayla lash thing was so bad to me. Not only did she lie, but she lied while making it seem like a regular, non sponsored post. By not making the ad obvious she completely bypassed the parts of my brain that protect me from exaggerated advertisements and I was more willing to believe what she was saying and let it influence my purchasing decisions.
I feel like we all have become so desensitize to ads and have come to expect them to not tell the full truth. That's what makes influencers so powerful, they cut through all the bright colors and exaggerated claims and get down to what is good and what isn't for us. We trust influencers in a way we don't trust brands or their ads, so when they lie it effects us more than when the brands do it.

Recommending cheaper alternatives have been around forever. Those are called dupes. Influencers make those videos all the time. I actually don’t love them because I wasted quite a bit of money on said dupe. In the last year or so, dupes are getting better. I would prefer them being called alternatives vs dupes, though. Rarely are they really dupes.
