The word haegeum has two meanings in its pronunciation. One is the name of a traditional Korean instrument 'Haegeum' used in this song, and the Chinese character 'Haegeum(解禁)' means to break the ban.

Great reaction Anthony and I think you’re right, a lot of people will miss the message that Yoongi is trying to convey, that we’re all slaves to the system and that unless we stay true to ourselves and our values, that ultimately money and power will inevitably corrupt!

Yeah, and at the same time he’s stating that even IF we stay true to our values, we will eventually find ourselves in positions we tried so hard to reach and then realize we were mistaken or our values changed, we changed and with the new perspective from our new standpoint we see things differently and have to get rid of earlier beliefs… I love this new rabbithole he opened…
And literally he just said it’s about liberation 😂💜

@@cokolwiekjestdostepne9607 I'm sorry, but the kpoppies are so out of their depth. In Polar Nights he says, “The world’s bullshit, but you don’t have to be/So open your eyes and see the real world.” In other words, you can live in a corrupt system if you don't allow your vision to cloud and or allow yourself to get sucked in. As for feeling called out, you know he would say that if you feel that way, it's on you.

    • @boopyournose5698
      @boopyournose5698 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I also want to add that no matter what you do, you will still be a slave to the system. I assume that's why the detective laughed when Agust D 3rd was about to shoot him.
And the chopsticks. He killed with the chopsticks and ate with them - you eat what you kill (or the normal cycle of life - you kill to eat). Or in business - you inevitably step over someone to be at the top. So even if you don't want to hurt anyone and want everyone to be equal, it's impossible. Someone will always suffer so others can have a good life. (Omelas in real life, I guess).
However, the lyrics are more about focusing on yourself. So the whole story is so contradicting, but that's what makes it so fun to analyze. I believe Yoongi understands that it's not in his power to change the system so he focuses on himself, making sure he's not stepping over his morals so at least he could feel clean to some extent (since the only person he can't run away from is him, he has to like himself to some degree, therefore, he needs to stay true to himself and cut out all the background noise that wants to mold him in their image).

@@boopyournose5698 Fantastic point. Plus I was watching Knox Hill’s reaction subsequently to watching Anthony’s and he was talking about the duality of the message, between freedom of expression and self indulgence, which can be extended to the haegeum itself, a 2 stringed instrument. Yoongi even used the ‘2’ chopsticks to kill, then eat, only one of which is the original purpose. Our boy Yoongi really is quite the deep thinking philosophical thinker isn’t he?

Thank you Anthony 💜 Haeugeum also means "lifting a ban" so I kind of associated it with freedom and a wake up call, like you said. Like he's saying this song is a haegeum = a call to free ourselves from the corruption and capitalism.

The social commentary on the D-Day album is nothing less than I expected from Agust D. I also interpreted the story of the MV the same way: the common man from Daechwita who killed the emperor has become corrupt and is taken out by this new Agust D - and he smiles when he shoots him because the new Agust D knows that he could be next. The multiple levels of the themes of power, corruption, liberation, freedom, lifting a ban are all complex and many. Agust D - the philosopher's rapper. Loved this dissection, Anthony.

There is no one like the members of Bts. They write, produce, compose and participate in all the songs of their albums. They do not wait for someone to write songs for them. They also sing live immediately when the album is released, and this is evidence of their strength. They share their ideas and communicate with army through songs, unlike other bands whose songs only talk about money, fame and love.💜bts paved the way . I'm so proud to be an army 💜 😌

As many others have commented, haegeum means a "folksy" type of instrument, but also liberation/to break the ban.
The instrument is also known for conveying a lot of emotion; in many ways the opposite of the official royal war music of Daechwita which signifies authority and power.
Also, I LOVE this song/MV - Yoongi in that leather coat ought to be illegal, and those wicked grins?

    2. Agust D-2 wasn't having it and killed Agust D.
    3. Agust D-2 lowkey becomes even more powerful than Agust D, his scar has healed a bit, but it still there cause, with mo money mo problems in comes Agust D-3 (from Haegum)
    4. Agust D-3 has had, just wants to be free to do as he please, no shackle, no judgment, no scar; kills Agust D-2.

The Haegeum sound was prominently heard in the first few seconds of the MV (at exactly 0:37 of the MV) and 11:49 of this reaction video. And the main TEA of the cigar part is the idea of how small things like "smoking a cigarette" will make headlines to make you a prey and center for criticism. Smoking a cigarette is not a crime at all but idols seen smoking cigarette are being treated like a criminal. And this happened with V, so this is a shoutout to those making headlines and criticized V for smoking a cigarette. He also called out many more esp TH-cam and corruptions going on around the industry. And now this song just became so controversial that a lot were so triggered just because AgustD is spitting facts.

Yes this is Daechwita storyline in modern era. Thai Army explained that this MV was filmed in Thailand and that place is called the “Thief Market” Rattanakosin Island (old name Thailand from 1782-1892) and it was the first international shopping center in that period after the abolition of slavery. This is how he explain it: The market came to exist because the people in the palace freed from the slavery when they moved out of the palace, they received goods from their master and stole some. They then brought those goods to sell them in this area. Haegeum is a traditional instrument but also means the liberation of the prohibition.

He is playing with words, Haegeum can be both korean traditional instrument or "Break the ban". Agust D discography is divided into three :
    - Agust D (1st mixtape) : He was angry, back at the time, against haters and whoever came on their roads (even his own self) while he holds that passion inside him and the dream to succeed
    - D-2 : He is confronting both sides of himself, the blond hair Agust D the angry one and the black hair Agust D the rebel. Daechwita was released on 2020 when they were very successful, so he considers the anger he hold inside him is the motor or the reason that made him successful it pushed him to prove everyone that they are the KINGS! 4 years passed since his first mixtape, people get more mature so here comes the black hair Agust D; the one who is now getting aware that anger would only damage him so he came to get rid of it and set new rules.
D-Day : We have now two black hair Agust D face to face, the rebel and the policeman. Police always refer to order, rules... so black hair Agust D who killed the king and made a new rules for his life on Daechwita became the policeman on Haegeum! Since Haegeum means in Chinese "Break the ban", this song is about him fighting the "bans" or rules he enforced himself to follow during those last 3 years.
The final of Daechwita was not clear, did he kill the king or not? Did he win against his anger or not? It's like he was indecisive back at the time but now he killed the policeman which proves that now he knows what he wants and he is not afraid of anything or anyone.
I've always admired him for his personality, he is the kind of person I really aspire to be : fearless, mentally strong, independent... He is the strongest person I've ever seen, he went through so much and still highly and firmly standing like a mountain!
I love all Bangtan members equally, but coming to solo music I've always had a soft spot for Yoongi's music. He has a sort of craziness (if I can say so) within him that I'm attracted to, he always sets the standards high when it comes to music. His MVs are the most cinematographic music videos the industry have ever seen plus his acting skills... Man is on a whole another level ! The only thing in my life I'll never regret is being his fan!
Thank you Anthony for your reaction, I love how you always get deeply within the songs and the MVs, it's always a pleasure to watch your videos 🙏🏻

Haegum does have a double meaning, not only a musical instrument: The other meaning of "haegum" is applied when it is used in popular Korean vernacular, in which it means "lifting a ban and allowing something that is forbidden," as host IU explained while interviewing Agust D on IU's Palette in April 2023. ALSO: One of the first things I noticed about Suga was his skin....man it is beautiful....his hands are gorgeous too....I'm just glad someone else mentioned it....I love that....the man just glows....gorgeous.

I love how he uses his platform to talk about current issues. The word "Haegeum" has two meanings. Later I saw on TH-cam somewhere where it said that (I think Yoongi) when playing some video games when you found a new level that it was a hidden Haegum and you would get a new song or music for for the game.
Gotta admire your priceless reaction to the music video, the lyrics, the symbolism, the flow, the background score and what not and not to forget, the man Mr. Augst D. Simply loved it❤ Keep'em coming, Anthony!

What took you so long Anthony? I've been waiting your reaction for haegeum! Coz u reacted differently from other reactors who only screaming and feel excited without talking much about his meaningful lyrics, flow and cadence. I like how you try to interpret what Agust D is saying here. One thing that you are wrong, many Armys not only adore Yoongi's cute n handsome face, but also do, get the message. The most important Agust D is talking about freedom, liberation. That's why your reaction worths waiting. Thank you for being Agust d biggest fan. Coz he's such the greatest (rap) idol in Korea and highly respected in the world. I'm begging you pleaseeee to upload ur reaction for other songs like snooze, huh, life goes on and amygdala here on youtube as well. Love and peace from Indonesia.

@@StripeySocks i realize that. Maybe i'm too excited to wait Anthony react to this one. Tired of watching other reaction talking craps and so little analyzing the meaningful lyric of haegeum 🙂

  • @heroturbo76

    Homonym lyrics
    "This song is a haegeum"
= the string instrument used 해금(奚琴)
    "a new kind of haegeum"
    = unlocking the forbidden 해금(解禁)
And a beat made with haegeum.
This fu***** guy is clearly a genius.

you are right about the cadence change, anthony. now that you said it, the change into slower one also emphasizes the cigarette smoking scene, because he purposely put that scene to give a statement. accdg to him,
“idols is that we don’t have to commit a crime or something controversial for people to blow little things out of proportion & judge us. i could never understand the mentality of those people. like when an idol smokes on a mv, say i get criticized for that at 31.”

You're on point about the cigars. It is self endulgence & on this MV it symbolizes freedom, because in KPop industry it is controversial for idols to be seen puffing a cigar. But Suga included it in the MV because he wants to portray freedom from what other people say they should be or should not be.

Hi Antony the Mv was filmed in Thailand Yoongi said he had a lot of fun filming it but it was very hot so I don’t know when this was filmed I love it he really is a lyrical genius his acting skills are so good I felt like I was watching a movie . He portrays himself a detective a gangster and Agust D I love these different roles he does and the Tony Montana reference in the bathtub I really loved that that’s a great movie. He would so good in a action movie I hope one day he will reconsider acting as he’s already good at it D - day is great album a masterpiece every track on that album I love so proud of him . You explain it so well everything Yoongi raps about his in his lyrics is so true .

You got it, Anthony! I also thought of it that way. This time, Suga is the leader of himself, or something like that. He is free now from the anger from his personas Agust D (which was killed in Daechwita and Haegeum), cause he is calmer and happier now. Well, atleast for me, that is my POV. :)

Can someone pls do a 'What do you think' and 'Haegeum' Mashup asap..idk why but both songs being put together would be a banger.
Also, Agust D/Suga/Min Yoongi has become the first rapper in history to sell 1M (1.07M) album copies in its first day release. KING THANGS✨️

He did say he's not angry anymore the way he was when he was young. He says goodbye to Agust D with this album, I can see how he would show the body.
He did say "Im the king, Im the boss.. "lol Now he's killed them both.
There has been so much analysis of this and I love reading all the thoughts!
I thought he was an undercover cop in this; and the police guy was currupt. That's why he gets a ride back in a cop car. Because he's the policeman all along keeping order. Is that how he sees himself? Someone said Joker also burned the money and said "Gothom deserves a better class of criminals" so maybe he admits he's also corrupt but at least a better type of criminal..... lol I love it all and all the theories work!

I think you underestimate ARMY's. We've all broken it down 25 times by now and written essays and made explanation videos. Sure we think he's cute, and there is the standard "Yoon-gi Marry me" part of the fandom, but the majority of us take his art seriously. We can think he's cute and realize his perspective, and his message, at the same time. I do always enjoy your perspective though Anthony. Through your reaction I get more tidbits of information that I may not have discovered yet. Thanks 💜

  • @sortaamy3003
    @sortaamy3003 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The endless information line hit me differently.
As a writer, I do not read while I'm writing. Things have a way of creeping in and altering my voice and my thoughts. It's not a concious move, but lines work their way in or a style will overtake mine. My brain is subconsciously "seeking conformity" so I only read while editing.
Much the same, if youve ever noticed yourself suddenly saying a new word a lot, you probably picked it up from someone else. If you drown yourself in a group, you start to think like them. Sometimes, that's not bad, like if an addict sticks to clean people in order to stay sober. But sometimes, it's life altering, like if a young kid is pulled into a violent racist organization. Those around us, what we surround ourselves with, become a part of us.

  • @reiang9637
    @reiang9637 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Haha ya I felt the same, they did a bait and switch. Like when Jimin came shocking the world with Set Me Free pt2 video and then Like Crazy comes more the vibe what we could expect from Jimin. All great songs but this song and mv is what we love from Suga , we love Agust D. Suga might as well be an actor too. Add him to the list of suit thugs in the next John Wick 😂. Put him in anything Army will crush the box office.
