Someone pointed out to me that the red chopsticks have a duality - like the haeguem instrument has 2 strings, the chopstick had 2 roles. In the beginning, they took life, in the end, they sustained life (fed him.)

Also some ARMY said how the red chopsticks may also represent Capitalism and how Yoongi condemns it and at the same time he’s also a part of it… since he’s also the part of a system( we all are)

@gameboyy310 The blond mad king from deatwicha represented ANGER that was carried out from his 1st mixtape... during that time BTS was getting dragged so much so yah.
the guy with the suit.. (he has healed scar. The scar from Amygdala of trauma and mental health issues).. he is the peasant from deatwichta who has succumbed to GREED... thus the real Agust D/ Suga who has healed comes to deal with the perverbial GREED from the power he currently has

The word haegeum has two meanings in korean. One is a traditional instrument and the other means lifting a ban. Agust d uses the second meaning in this song, as a way to show that he's done everything that is prohibited. For eg: idols smoking on camera is considered like a crime in korea but here Yoongi doesn't give two fucks and he's done smething which was banned. So everything he talks about in the song is a haegeum.

    • @royaltyrevenant
      @royaltyrevenant ปีที่แล้ว +69

Also, the sound of a haegeum (the instrument) can be heard in the beginning of the song

    • @bismitadutta0613
      @bismitadutta0613 ปีที่แล้ว +92

I'm sorry about the smoking part. Crime isn't the right word. Lemme try rephrase it again. In Korea it is considered bad for your 'idol image' to smoke on camera (there are a lot, smoking is just one example). Even Yoongi's smoking scene has gotten him into some controversial shit but that's the point. He basically doesn't care about the so called 'idol image' which forces a 30 y/o grownup man to act a certain way. He's defying everything which has been imposed on him saying they're rules but who the fuck is actually making the rules and why...

@@bismitadutta0613 He also put the cigarettes in there because a couple of other BTS members have been seen with vapes, which caused a stir among some of the more prudish ARMYs. In a way, Suga was saying, "I've got your backs." And as a matter of fact, when he did his live in the middle of his American tour, he made damn sure that a lighter was visible on the table beside him! Yoongi just does not put up with crap.

He was stealing from the dirty cop, that's why he didn't mind burning it. His purpose was to drag out the cop so he could kill him. "It's not about the money" phrase from the joker is the perfect phrase to explain his actions haha. The metaphor of two Min Yoongi (scar one is Agust D, full of anger; and Suga/his true self, ready to get over that anger and accept himself and say what he things without fear) is so well done... love your reactions!!🥰

The police officer was from daechwita. He was the commoner that killed the king. Yoongi killed the king(himself) that part of himself the anger the flexing. And in this mv the commoner/police officer had become what he killed. Yoongi grows and changes but that dark side is still there.... feels like he is fighting it. The way his hair lays on his face at the end it makes it look like like his scar like he will eventually become again what he just killed.

I don't think it means he will become what he killed again cause Suga stated that Agust D is dead now. So instead, I think it means that it happened, it's the past, it's possible he's not going to forget it cause it's a part of what made him become the grown man he's now. That's what I think.

One thing I noticed, whether it means something or not... The king in Daechwita had a pretty fresh scar on his face while the peasant version of SUGA had the same scar, but it was more healed. In Haegeum, the Boss has a completely healed scar while the thug version has no scar at all... yet at the end of the MV, now that he's in charge, his bangs hang over his right eye in the same location of the scar. What does it mean? Maybe that the scar represents a physical manifestation of his darker side and past trauma and as he grows and evolves, he not only accepts his darker side, becoming more whole, but also heals from his past trauma; yet it never COMPLETELY goes away. Even if the "scar" is physically gone, there will still be the memory and a part of WHO you are since your past experiences have made you who you are and impact how you live your life.
Also... the guy on the phone in the beginning of the MV calling the boss, shares a look with Agust D as he leaves with the money; he his the same guy at the end "drowning" him and must also be the one that put the gun in the barrel for him, since he takes it and holds it for him after he shoots the boss. Thug Agust D only stole the money to draw out and set up Boss Agust D so he could kill him and take his place. This parallels the peasant version in Daechwita planning to overthrow the King with the butcher/executioner.

Yoongi’s words: “The word “Haegeum” came to me when I was young. I played rhythm games, I loved rhythm action games. When beating a certain stage, you’d unlock a forbidden song, then you could play a new rhythm. It was a “freedom from the forbidden.” Why don’t I try and break free from those things?”
But the Haegeum is also a traditional Korean string instrument that is featured in the song. I love how Yoongi fuses modern hip hop in a way that honours and shows pride towards his Korean heritage! ❤

thank you for your reaction! you're deadass like a breath of fresh air for me as a reactor, I like how you're both excited and attentive. also, somebody mentioned that the part of him "clowning", where he was looking at the fish in the bottle, kinda represents hypocrisy or irony of "a guy who's trying to fight against restrictions" still taking away the freedom from another being. This mv is kinda a circle of gambling with freedom, in a way, it shows us several different ways how self-indulgence and freedom coexist. Also I really like the part of the mv there he says: "All the controversy incessantly triggers confusion in judgement" and right after that a scene with the Agust D in the suit happens. And this Agust D is a corrupt cop. Seeing him as a cop and the other Agust D as a criminal, it's easy to assume that the cop is a good guy, but actually, your judgement just was confused by controversy of the cop being the worse one between the two of them.

yes, doolset breaks down all the songs. Back then, captions weren't readily available in BTS' music videos and other video content. So we had fan translators who helped bridge the gap with the differences in languages so that everyone could understand their lyrics more. Doolset isn't the only one who does this and she's not as active anymore so her translations will come several days later after a song/album drop but her translations are still one of my go-to's because she provides additional context to some of the cultural insights that non-koreans don't know and she has a fuller catalog of their songs. The ads are weird on their sites (I remember you seeing this before in a previous video) but that's because it's just a free blog platform.

4:12 Haegum in a literal meaning is a traditional Korean string instrument, really unique sound but his intended meaning behind it was to unlock something forbidden or breaking free from something forbidden.
He has an interview with I.U where he gives a really amazing explanation

I've been a bit of a saddo and watched Daechwita and Haegeum side by side and it's fascinating how some parts are subtley similar. At the start of Haegeum, when he's walking down the street with the other six blokes, it ties in closely with the start of Daechwita. Instead of a cow and cart there's a tuk tuk instead (and of course whe can't forget the chicken). The similarities don't necessarily happen at the same points in the mvs though. Some of the dancing moves that Haegeum chopstick Yoongi does are exactly the same as Daechwita king Yoongi.... the dark knight thing is also an echo of when he's hanging out of the car in Daechwita as it goes round and round. These are just a few but there are loads - I think I may watch Amygdala along with the other two and see if there are links there as well.

"It looks like he's always killing a version of himself in these videos."
(EXACTLY the same thing I thought the first time I watched this.)
If you read the lyrics to The Last (where he talks about his past struggles with depression, social phobia, and fame), there's a line "Min Yoongi has already died (I killed him)." So his war between selves goes back a LONG way. (And I was in AWE of how he laid it all bare for us in concert. Yoongi is a rare combination of directness, courage, and compassion.)
It feels like the part of himself he fights against most often is the fame monster, the part that craves and devours to the point of destroying self and friends-- so, the Mad King in Daechwita, and the Corrupt Cop/Mob Boss in Haegeum.
He knows that's a part of his character, but I feel like sometimes it's sort-of benign (In Interlude: Shadow, he doesn't kill his Shadow, he kind of accepts that it'll always be there), and sometimes it's a cancer growing out of control, where "killing" it is the only way the rest of him survives. (In The Last, he seems to feel like it got him first.)

Love how in depth you get into the lyrics/message - I'm not sure how much you know about Min YoonGi aka Suga/AugstD....but the following info might be of interest to you.💜💜
Suga/Agust D began writing music lyrics and working with MIDI at age 11 and held a part-time job composing and arranging music at a recording studio at age 16.
Active under the name "Gloss" (wordplay on his name YoonGi, which means "to shine") as an underground rapper in Daegu, He originally entered Big Hit Entertainment as a producer at age 17
Between his commitments as a member of BTS, Suga/Agust D took advantage of time on the plane and in hotel rooms after concerts to continuously produce and compose music.
In an interview for Grazia Korea, Suga/Agust D expressed a desire to release the music he wanted to do without having to consider popular appeal or music ranking. He intended to release his music for free in the form of a mixtape to avoid such considerations, commenting that an album "has a feeling of being trapped in some sort of framework" due to the need for company involvement in promotion and advertising. He has released 2 mixtapes free on soundcloud for the fans - this is his first official album (of which he continues to maintain full creative control)
Developing Agust D musically on the base of hip hop, much of Agust D's inspiration for the lyrics came from his own stories of dream, youth, and reality. In order to differentiate his work from that of his work as Suga, he developed the alter ego "Agust D".... Backwards D (Daegu) T (Town) Suga
Suga/AgustD was involved in all aspects of this song and music video (and Daechwita/Amygdala) and had great input into how the music video was designed/produced (working as usual with Director Lumpens (Choi YongSeok) who does most BTS MVs) -
Yoongi wrote, composed and produced the song, he conceptualised the MV and had full creative control he is a true genius.
This is the middle song in a trilogy..... He is a master storyteller.... a fellow army best explained the trilogy as -
Daechwita... ridding himself of the need to prove his worth to others
Haegum... ridding himself of the confines of modern society
Amygdala... he investigates the inner demons and trauma that started his confinement in the first place.
Haegeum has 2 meanings...1. it is a Korean traditional musical instrument with 2 strings and.... 2. to lift a ban/to free what was restricted.
He has a documentary on DIsney+ that shows how he made his album DDay. It will be released into cinemas in June.

I'm a baby boomer and rarely saw the appeal of rapping and hip hop. I had always felt stressed or angry when I heard it. Maybe it was because the rappers often sounded stressed and angry themselves. The rapline of BTS, however, have completely changed my thoughts, opinions, and heart in a way I didn't think possible. While I likely will not really understand the culture and origins of American hip hop, I have come to truly appreciate the beats, flow, and dynamics of it. Add to that the insightful lyrics that these talented young men bring to the table, and I've officially become a fan! Thank you for your thoughtful reviews. I've subscribed and become a fan of you, as well, Gameboyy! 💜

I think Agust D/Suga/Min Yoongi is going to be one of the world cultural leaders for the future. He is like a real angel, a figure of reckoning sent to warn us and encourage us, and allow human goodness to prevail. I have same interpretation. In terms of music video, Yoongi was killing off pride/ego in Daechwita storyline and killing off greed in Haegeum storyline. As much as he preaches, he tries to walk his talk. He knows that he himself has pride/ego n greed too -- just like all of us are susceptible to it -- and he is self-aware to do his best to evolve into a better version of himself by trying to kill off the negative parts of himself. In the song itself, Yoongi shares his commentary on pride/ego in Daechwita lyrics and his commentary on greed in Haegeum lyrics. In Daechwita, he shared how the haters had so much ego to look down on him which led him to hunger for his success but through the rest of the lyrics black-haired yoongi himself also flexed back on them with ego and pride too (born as a beggar, to become a king) but then ultimately he attempts to kill the blonde king version of himself (his own pride/ego) at the end. In haegeum lyrics, yoongi sings about the conditions of society that led us to be filled with greed, prejudice, selfishness and narrow-thinking. But he is awake to this problem and is trying to call us to free ourselves from this. Hence the MV shows black-haired yoongi as a corrupt police mob boss filled with greed and rebel yoongi killed that greed version of himself at the end too. this is why I think he is very self-reflexive.
Hope u check out Yoongi's AMYGDALA music video next and read about that part of his background/past from there.

Korean is a contextual language… so when it comes to translation there is not really a word for word translation which you would find in many western languages… doolset seems to do the best job…
Suga’s tracks are never lightweight.. although some may feel lighter than others… the other one from the album with a video is people part 2.. it seems like a pretty song but the lyrics go so deep… and that’s him.. a guy who takes life seriously and reflects deeply and still is entertaining af💜

BTS have always talked about controversial topics on their albums. It's one of the reasons why they were ridiculed so much at the beginning. Their entire first series of albums is about being a teenager, the issues of society, the pressure on their generation to follow the status quo. Their song N.O. is just *chef's kiss*

the way that all three agust d’s connect is that from the track “agust d”, that blonde version of himself became the tyrant king that is in the daechwita music video, and the agust d of the daechwita killed the tyrant king but then went on to become some corrupt member of the police force that’s portrayed in the haegeum music video, and in haegeum we have another agust d killing the previous.. it’s like a lil cycle lol. the concept of the trilogy as a whole is real genius.

Suga in his discussion of the balance between freedom and self-indulgence to some extent feels like a well-developed master class on what BTS RM of BTS's song "Do You" hinted at. RM wrote:
"There are a lot of adults who can’t hold in their shit. These people who clamor for respect with their own mouths. Even they don’t know the misjudgments of those words, freedom and self-indulgence, they’re obviously different."

So glad you got to go to the concert and see him play firsthand!! “You’re sounding like an activist... shhh... they’re listening.” YEEEEP! And this is the exact reason why mainstream media & the industry tries to suppress the music & the message & downplay their talents, success, and fanbase. They’re speaking truth to power and bringing people of all ages cultures and backgrounds together. If we learn to love ourselves and acknowledge the hate and prejudice we put on others the higher ups lose power. Music is how the message gets out from the activist artists in the 60’s singing protest songs to now. Art is such a powerful thing! 💜

I'm with you, the message in this song is so very relevant! There's a great live version of this, with the band, and the traditional instruments, and then he did a dance practice to it as well that's real good. I was thinking you'd see the dance at the concert, but it looks to me like he didn't do it at the concerts, at least not the cuts I've seen from them.
    Have a great holiday weekend!💜💜💜

I love that your reading the lyrics and questioning it. Thats the shit he wants. Envoking conversation. This man HAS BEEN THRU IT. From his family ( him growing up and they not supporting his dream to produce music but to learn a trade) , being challenged about his music, his rapping skills ( he pauses often rapping and playing piano because jerks say bts /him arent LIVE) . Hes showing his personal journey in an artistic sense. My interpretation of this video is of the character of the joker. His villian orgin story. The joker was created BY SOCIETY. The unfairness and judgement for being yourself. Society saying your "bad" when your not. Then you get mad and rebel. He went thru this. Bts went thru this. Constant judgement of their art. The fans backed them up. Thats why they GO HARD for them. They see the talent. The hard work. On 3/4 hrs of sleep. No food. These guys PUT IN TIME. Thats why theyre seen as the kings of kpop. All have their role. All his videos are chapters of his journey thru life. Notice the blond hair, scar then black hair. It shows in his agust d concert. He takes you on a journey. Learning lessons, self reflection and self love.

Yes! He’s always killing the power hungry greedy part of himself, here the cop is running a drug lab and stole his money (some scenes got cut showing this more). He’s got a street smart rebel who fights back and battles that part of himself/society. We are dying for actor AgustD he claims he’s not attractive enough. His tens of millions of fans disagree. His swag on this is John Wicks level of charisma and intimidation.
He’s been talking like this for a long time. He’s got a duet rap song with RM on his last mixtape “Strange” (no MV) that really gets into how we have polarization in society. BTS has always had deep social commentary. The song Polar Night on this DDay album is another stellar social commentary one. He’s like a wise man dropping truths on the most ridiculous beats. Every. Damn. Song. And RM and Jhope are just as intense in their solo albums.

The hanja (Chinese characters) at the beginning of the MV make the intended meaning unambiguously "lifting of a ban". The Agust-D persona feels like Yoongi releasing all the pent-up thoughts and feelings resulting in a catharsis. I recommend the Suchwita episode in which RM and Yoongi switched roles allowing Yoongi to speak at length about his music. Yoongi originally created Suchwita to give the other Tanniesa a platform to talk about their music in a safe environment without the asinine questions they get from interviewers who don't do their homework.

Great observations and convo about this song. His lyrics are so deep and worthy of this kind of analysis because they are always so much more than what’s on the surface. And with a dope beat to top it all off. Every time I hear it it reminds me of Iron Man’s theme song (the Led Zeppelin, Kashmir one)

You have to watch Amygdala -> Daechwita -> Haeguem in sequence. Amygdala says the story of how he got the scar. Subject to circumstances he inflicts it upon himself. Then in each iteration, if you look at the scar, it's healing progressively to ultimately in Haegeum the surviving Agust D version has no scar. And it's a continuous process. He's killing his previous negative self in each of them.

The ending, where he sits and grabs the red chopsticks, along with that pose, makes me think of loops.
If he's not reflecting on the things he talked about in this very same song, he might revert to being that dirty cop again.
It's an ongoing fight against self-corruption, which at his level will undoubtedly bring him money (going commercial or something similar), but in the process, he may lose his freedom to be who he really is.
I might be way off, but that's what I feel at the end.

I loveeee your reactions. I’ve been watching you recently and i love your energy and also your commentaries, they’re accurate. Talking about the video, the part where he burned the money he steal, i think he does that because he’s free from money and self-indulgence, even tho he steal that money, he doesn’t need it, it’s not his, so he just let it go, unlike the corrupt policeman even when the money isn’t his, he’s still fighting for it. Andddd, i like to think that the final look isn’t for the ladies, but for the public… a death treat look that says “you’re next” bc he has his chopsticks in his hands and he’s not afraid to used them. Ps. You can pause the video as many times as you want, don’t be afraid to take your time to read and organize your ideas and express them, that’s what I like about your video reactions and I think many other armys also like it.💜 Thank you for your hardwork.

The detective and King represent greed and self indulgence of himself. As you see the scar in this has faded but the struggle is still real. In the end he kills off that side of him for freedom. He burns the money for a point that he won't be a slave to it. He creates all of his of lyrics, beats and produces it. He has a documentary "Road to D-Day" that talks about the process of this album. Amygdala is part of the trio I strongly recommend watching that as well to complete the message. It is a hard watch though since its so honest and raw. In that song and video he reflects his past and pain that brought him to where he is today. (side note when he was trainee in 2012 before debut the company had no money so he got a job as delivery person for money so the band could keep going. He was in car accident and hurt his shoulder. He had to lie to the company about what happened so he wouldn't be kicked out and had to work through the pain like that until 2020 when was finally able to have surgery since they couldn't perform due to the pandemic.) He also explains that in the documentary. Honestly that would be a great thing to watch to truly understand him better. As always you reactions are real, raw and unbias. Love it. I look forward to all your reactions every time!

Not only did he ride in the back of the cop car like Joker, he also burned the stolen money like Joker too. I think the idea was less about taking the money for personal gain (like the dirty cop assumed) but more about taking the money to get the attention of the people he had a message for (within the storyline of the MV). There's something powerful about distroying the thing or one of the things that society values the most...money. When a person can do that, there's a scary level of unpredictability that they bring to the table. The rules of engagement gets thrown off when faced with an opponent that isn't afraid to lose his life or his money while he has an agenda that you don't know about that includes you. Such a fascinating MV that gets more interesting the more you watch it and the more you have time to think about it. It has great replay value.
