Enjoy your videos very much. The fuel hose came off inside the tank because the nipple on the plastic adapter is smooth. Stihl updated that piece many years ago to a ribbed nipple on the plastic. No more fuel hoses falling off. It comes as a kit for the four mix. Never reuse the smooth ones. It will bite you in the end. As for the carburetor, no rebuilds from experience. Much smaller orifices inside and if the primer bulb is that bad, the carb is not far behind. Valve adjustment at EVERY tune up. After so many of those drive shafts coming apart, you need all the tricks you can fiind. A lot more fun when they are in the shape of an ess. Just another day at a Stihl shop.
I had no idea the rough starting was due to the valves needing to be adjusted. I immediately ordered a kit and wow. What an improvement! I adjust the valves on my 3 classic VWs on a regular basis so I feel like a derp for not realizing this is what my Kombi needed. Thanks so much!
Looks like the customer had these sitting for a few years before he finally bit the bullet and had them looked at. My neighbor has a FS 85 trimmer that ran like poo. Thanks to your guidance, it now runs like a champ. Thanks from both of us, I learned how to fix it, and he has his trimmer back. BONUS, I can now borrow it when needed!
Thanks Bre, this might be the solution to why my old FS 85 trimmer won`t start & run. I saw how USPS is slowing the mail down so hope you still get the delivery by next week.
Try cleaning the spark arrestor, mine did the same thing, was about to order a carburetor and decided to give the spark arrestor cleaning a shot and it worked like a charm.
I've had the "pleasure" of diagnosing one of those, first time I had ever seen this system. One other notorious point of failure is the PLASTIC camshaft, which will be mangled when the valves need adjustment. Another 6$ or so part, will save you a lot of trouble to just replace while it is opened up
About 2 months ago I worked on a Stihl FS90 that was given to me. I did the same exact valve adjustment to get it running. I converted it to a hedge trimmer. Now it runs great.
About 8 years ago I saw that same model pole-saw for sale on eBay for $600 with shipping. It was used but looked new and had the tools and everything. I bought it for my son and it's been a trouble-free workhorse since. It's a hand-full when extended to the full 16' but sometimes you just need it all. It's a great product just like our Stihl chainsaws, blowers, and trimmers. Great info on adjusting the valves. Thanks!
My 130R trimmer was hard to pull to start. I took it back to the dealer and they said that is how they are. Now I had owned it for about a year. I got the feeler gage and the parts. Watched a few videos on what to do but no one said anything about the 2 different top dead settings to where the valves are. I believe I seen a video you posted on the correct way to do it. I was totally off. Now it pulls so much easier. Thank you!
Nice job. The valve adjustment is a regular maintenance item. It says right in the Owner's Manual to adjust the valves every 130 hours. No one ever does it and then they complain that the recoil is hard to pull and the engine doesn't have any power.
I went back to the clutch replacement video from two yrs ago. It was interesting to see how much your presentation has changed in those two yrs. You've loosened up a lot. Nothing wrong with that, it's just obvious you've become more comfortable with the videos. Thx.
So I bought my fs 90 close to 20 yrs ago. First yr they fixed the gas cap to a regular screw an not that locking one. Still fires up 1st or 2nd pull. I've made over $200k easily. Ive cut between 10 an 40 yards a week every yr. A couple clutches 4 or 5 heads. Hands down the best weedeater ever made. Best $325 i ever spent.
Hi Bre, I know what that kind of back pain feels like. I needed two back surgeries for my auto accident injury. The spinal fusion surgery relieved about 75% of my low back pain, but another rear end accident five years later made all the pain return. Have been on pain management since 2000. There was one time, before the fusion surgery, I was loading up my pickup with unmounted 10:00 x 20" truck tires for our dump trucks. Our family owned a fleet of dump trucks and I was the mechanic/driver. Well, I needed to load up eight tires and on the last one as I was flipping it onto the tailgate my back went out with that screaming pain knocking me to the ground and I couldn't get back up. I was at home and had to crawl back into the house through the back door. Luckily there was a phone on the desk in the basement I could reach to call my father for help. I would not have been able to reach any of the wall mounted phones. He was able to get me on a sofa in the basement and I stayed there for several hours until the pain subsided enough to head to the ER. It wasn't long after that event I had the fusion surgery. You, Ron and the family stay safe.
Oh no! So Sorry Don! The same thing happened to Ron. I walked out back of our old repair shop and he was laying on the ground by the zero turn he was working on. Had to go to the emergency room, but they were no help. Took hours just to get any pain meds.
@@Chickanic Hi Bre, I found the ER was also not much help except getting a script for some stronger pain meds. It was about a week before I could get back to work from that event.
Another great video where you make it look easy. The back pain is the WORST!!!! Speaking from experience. I hurt my back in 2004 hauling trees and now I have to stretch 2 times a day to survive. Hopefully you’ll heal quickly. Thank you for sharing your video
I bought a four mix that looked like that. Had a lot of the same symptoms yours had. Did a total teardown, clean, grease, and replaced some parts. Runs great now!
Every time you start a piece of equipment and right away it idles. Then I go out and start mine, and NOW they start and idle right away. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Do take care of your back! Those issues really get worse over time. At 77 I wish I could undo all the heavy lifting I did early in life (starting at $1.15/hour). It's finally cool enough to start cutting firewood for next year and this old body needs the work to keep from locking up! The lesson I learned is, just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. Good plan to let Alex do that cranking!
After your back is back to full functioning, there are exercises to strengthen the muscles that help a lot. Will keep it from going out again in the future. I had trouble for a lot of years, until i got on the ball and strengthened my muscles. No no problem for the last decade or two. Yes, im getting up there in age, but i feel great. Thank you for another awesome video and great advice.
Hello from France (Normandy), I just discovered your YT channel. and I am delighted to have found the solution for my KM and my HS 45 which both had trouble starting! Plus with a video accompanied by a sensually smiling Chic Lady. it's just happiness. PS: I subscribed because you all have lots of interesting solutions. Have a nice day.🥰
Hi Bre, interesting to note that the feeler gauge for these valves is actually 4 thousandths. I put a Mitutoyo 500-196-30 Digital Caliper on mine and that's what it read. There's a 10 stamped on the feeler gauge so it has to be a metric tool. Conversion is 2.56cm/in.
for my back I use heat and cold. A heating pad then a shower, at the end of the shower I aim the shower head at my lower back and then keep adjusting the water temp until it's full cold, and I'll just stand there for 15-20 minutes.
Bre, pick yourself up one of those elastic with velcro back braces. When you get the slightest twinge, throw it on, you'll be spared the worst. They really do help hold things where they ought to be.
Once any structural problems have been found and dealt with, the next best thing for most back problems is physical therapy. This is not to say, "Just go to the gym, bro!" but to work with doctors and physical therapists to find the routines that will best work for you and YOUR back issues.
I learned something today! My KM131has been doing that jerking thing, recently, when I go to start it. Guess I'll have to check valve adjustment! Thanks!
Yes. I had to do.that adjustment to mine a couple of years ago. Mine vibrates so much my hands tingle. Even when I have a saw balanced blade on it. Does yours? Lots of power though.
Stihl has an updated grommet that has a barbed end on it so the inner fuel line won't fall off. It also comes with a new inner line. Fyi. Keep up the great vids.
Just checked my HT75 and there is no valve cover or fuel tank plug. 😊 Every year, that dang pole saw is more of a beast to operate! Always start lopping off branch pieces from the end and work your way back to the tree trunk.
Great fix, i have 2 questions though. 1. Why didn't you give it a wash? 2. what juice do you use in your ultrasonic cleaner? i have one but haven't been able to find a cleaning solution that works/cost a fortune, or is that a trade secret? Top notch video as usual thanks for posting.
I was hoping to see you fix the pole part too but just to get the engine running again is good. I'm not particularly fond of the design of the 4mix engine and I think the Shindaiwa hybrid4 design makes more sense since the fuel air mix actually goes up into the head and through the intake valve. I am more of a Honda mini 4 stroke design fan as those engines are incredibly smooth, easy to start and use. My Honda trimmer, unfortunately is out of commission currently as it needs some work on the fuel system like replacement lines and grommet, a potential carb kit and a new primer bulb. The machine is 18 years old and first belonged to my Uncle who has since passed away.
Maybe that's what was wrong with my Stihl fs130. It had a jerky start. A spark plug only lasted 5 hours and then it would needed to be replaced already. Maybe valves needed adjustment. I finally just trashed it and bought a 2 stroke echo.

Not like you to try adjusting the mixture knowing the valves were in dire need of adjustment.. For those doing their own work, a typical .004" feeler gauge will not work. The rocker arms are ribbed to deter push rod slippage. You'll need to trim the end of the feeler gauge to fit or buy the over priced Stihl tool.

It's funny, most if not all "small engine mechanics" say to do proper valve adjustment you have to on the compression stroke. It makes the way you {and Stihl?} do it. If you are not on the compression stroke the both valves are resting on the base of the cam. Derek at VGG does this exact thing on vehicle engines and it works.
With the plug that dirty, I would've checked the muffler for clogging too. Back - been there. I feel your pain. It's no fun. Laminectomy and pulposus replacement it gets bad, IMHO, avoid fusion. Had it done decades ago when it was new procedure. They replace the pulposus of the blown disk w/ cellulose and you end up w/ a new disk, and are still flexible. DO NOT have an orthopedic carpenter do the surgery if you need it eventually - get a neurosurgeon. Most bad disks in L region - lay on back and have someone lift straight leg by the heel upwards. If that hurts, it's possibly blown. Otherwise you might be able to fix w/ PT and a TENS unit (muscle spasms cause)
I have a Craftsman WS2200. Just recently stopped restarting after getting hot. Changed the air filter, carb and fuel filter. Still having issue. Any recommendations.
What did you use to clean up the stihl pole saw carb and gas tank area? I was using my kombi 130 the other day and it just shut off during use. Went to restart it and now it has no compression. Gonna have to take it apart and take a look. Any suggestions? Figured id check the valve clearance first and go from there

I have a Craftsman WS2200. Just recently stopped restarting after getting hot. Changed the air filter, carb and fuel filter. Still having issue. Any recommendations.
Totally not a Stihl question but is there a right and wrong TDC for a Craftsman lawn tractor? How do we know which one is right?
What did you use to clean up the stihl pole saw carb and gas tank area? I was using my kombi 130 the other day and it just shut off during use. Went to restart it and now it has no compression. Gonna have to take it apart and take a look. Any suggestions? Figured id check the valve clearance first and go from there
I use an air nozzle. You'll go through a lot of carb cleaner cleaning the outside off.
"I'm fixin' to blow a disc" would make a good t-shirt!
What about the gaping hole in the side of the tank?
Sorry if you've already said this. What do you use for a cleaning solution in your ultrasonic cleaner? Thanks for your vids!
