  • This video features a bed frame that I built from solid maple. It is mid century inspired and has a modern clean look. The combination of the graphic design on the headboard and bold color work together to make a statement in our bedroom. The headboard cants at a nice 10 degree angle, held in place by support brackets that were milled using a router pattern and a Whiteside compression spiral flush trim bit from Bits & Bits Company. It is a king sized frame and sits nice and low to the ground. I used hairpin legs from diyhairpinlegs.com for a clean and modern look that harkens back to retro furniture from the middle of the last century. I added adjustable center feet and a slat base from IKEA to simplify and streamline the build. The joinery for this bed uses knockdown style hardware the and the Woodpeckers Cross Dowel Jig. It produces a clean, strong joint that lines up perfectly, but disassembles quickly for transportation. The finish is Kem Aqua Plus from Sherwin Williams, which is a pigmented water based lacquer that is extremely durable and wear resistant. It was sprayed with the Earlex Spray Port 6003 hvlp system.
We went with an Original mattress from Tuft & Needle, which is both amazingly supportive and an unbelievable value. T&N provides a 100 night trial with no strings attached. If you don't like the mattress for any reason, they will arrange for a non-profit to come pick it up and donate it to someone in need. They also have a hassle free limited warranty, should anything ever go wrong with your mattress. We have found the mattress to be supportive, yet comfortable. It expanded to full size quickly with no noticeable odor. After a week of sleeping on the new mattress, we are sleeping like babies again!

Very nice work, found you through Four eyes. What kind of shop is that? Nice drum sander!

The very beginning of the video was filmed in our High School’s shop. I used their jointer, planer, and wide belt sander for some of the milling. Most of the boards were wider than my jointer, so this just made it faster/easier. Some really nice equipment for sure! Everything after the wide belt was filmed in my garage shop. Thanks for watching!

Such a cool build! We love the design on the headboard. Great work with your Earlex 6003 paint sprayer!
