Making a Catchall Tray with a Router and Template
I love making and using router templates and jigs in my shop. They can be quite valuable for pattern routing larger work pieces, or making precise repeatable parts, but they are also a great way to make small decor items like this catchall tray. Spending a little time up front making an accurate template will let you make dozens of these little trays rather quickly, without the help of a CNC machine!
This design was heavily inspired by a recent patterned plywood project by Michael Alm of Alm Fab (link below). His tray was power covered and a bit bigger, but the shape is very similar. I needed the tray to be a specific size to fit my hall table, and it turned out perfect. It will be a great spot for us to throw our keys when entering the house.
The bit I used for the routing is a bowl and tray bit from Whiteside, and the finish is a water-based stain called Whitewash by General Finishes followed by a few coats of Deft spray lacquer. The wood is birch and the final dimensions are 12"x4"x1-1/2".
Thanks so much for watching!

Simple Modern Candlesticks: A Woodturning Project
มุมมอง 3374 ปีที่แล้ว
These sets of tapered candle holders are a quick and easy project that people seem to really love. They are great for gifts or for selling at craft markets, fairs, etc. There are about a million ways to personalize them with wood species, finish, color, whatever. They require very little material and the whole set can be turned start to finish in less than an hour once you've done a few. They a...
Making a Modern Desk Lamp - A Woodturning Project
มุมมอง 4014 ปีที่แล้ว
I've had this idea for a simple mid century inspired desk lamp stuck in my head for quite a while. I love the notion of an articulating lamp with the joints made from wood. I've seen other lamps made in this fashion, but with flat stock, not turned parts. I feel that the round spindle arms give the piece a fun and interesting aesthetic, that is also very classic. I'm so glad I finally took the ...
Making a Hexagon-Inspired Hall Table
มุมมอง 3.3K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a narrow, two-legged hall table for our foyer. We don't have a lot of extra space, but needed something to add some interest. The piece is only about 5-1/2" total in width. Everything on this table is inspired by a hexagon...from the legs, to the angled ends on the top, the half hex cutouts to accept the legs, and even the angles used for the ledger board that secures the table to the w...
How to Make a Spinning Top and Launcher - Harvey T-40 Wood Lathe

How to build a mid-century inspired retro modern bed frame.
มุมมอง 1.3K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This video features a bed frame that I built from solid maple. It is mid century inspired and has a modern clean look. The combination of the graphic design on the headboard and bold color work together to make a statement in our bedroom. The headboard cants at a nice 10 degree angle, held in place by support brackets that were milled using a router pattern and a Whiteside compression spiral fl...
How to Turn a Cigar Stand - Craft Market Series - Episode 3
มุมมอง 12K8 ปีที่แล้ว
This is another super quick and easy project that should be a great seller at craft markets or farmer's markets. It is also a really easy lathe project that is great for beginners. Any cigar aficionado would love to receive one of these as a gift as well. It is a nice way to hold your cigar over any ashtray while smoking. Make a Serving Board with a Router and Template - Craft Market Series - Episode 2
มุมมอง 65K8 ปีที่แล้ว
These serving boards are a huge hit with friends and family, so I think they will do very well at the farmer's markets this summer. Once the router template is made, they are quick to batch out and don't use much material, so this is another good craft market project with a lot of profit margin built in. This project is also very easy to adjust for whatever your personal taste or needs may be. ...
Turning a Ring Bowl with Carbide Tools - Craft Market Series - Episode 1
มุมมอง 9K8 ปีที่แล้ว
This week I am turning small ring bowls on the lathe for the upcoming craft market season. I use 8/4 scraps of kiln dried material I have laying around the shop, so there is no material cost to me for these. They are quick to turn and a lot of fun. I am also experimenting with color on some. I primarily use carbide tools due to convenience. I am no expert but hope to give at least a few pointer...
How To Make A Beer Bottle Display
มุมมอง 4.5K8 ปีที่แล้ว
This was really quick project that was fun to make. My version holds 12 standard beer bottles. It is 46" long and the wells are 2-1/2" in diameter, spaced 1" apart. I used pre-milled 1x4 select pine offcuts from prior projects. To route the wells, I removed most of the waste with a Forstner bit and then made a router template and used a guide bushing and straight bit to clean out the rest. This...
DIY Adjustable Camera Mount
มุมมอง 1.9K8 ปีที่แล้ว
Thanks so much for taking the time to watch my very first video! I really appreciate all of the support and encouragement from the online woodworking community. This week I built an adjustable camera mount for the woodturning bench. I plan to do several more projects at the lathe and I wanted a cheap, sturdy camera mount that was adjustable to achieve a lot of different camera angles. After doi...

    Great video! but I'd suggest a couple of changes. It would be great if you'd mention the rpm used and give a glance at the tool. You mention what you're using but I'm 80 and my best hearing days are long gone so it's difficult to hear over the music sound track, which I enjoyed. Thanks.

    • @natecrilly742
      @natecrilly742 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn’t add any weight. The weight of the two arms does a good job of countering each other. It’s not very tippy or anything. You could easily add some weight in the bottom of the base in the chuck recess if you felt like it was needed.

    • @aligned4good
      @aligned4good 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@natecrilly742 Thank you. I added small rocks to the bottom of mine after routing a recess for it, but It is still top heavy. My lamp design is different than yours and has a metal top. I'll come up with a solution. Thank you for your response.

    • @kz.irudimen
      @kz.irudimen ปีที่แล้ว

      I think there was a screw or a pin or something going through a hole in his router base and into the MDF. Kind of a circle cutting jig but integrated in the router base.
