  • @zzubra
    @zzubra 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    5:50 It’s NOT surprising that Earth’s orbit “doesn’t have much” inclination, since orbital inclinations are measured relative to the plane of Earth’s orbit! Earth could be the planet with the weird inclination and it wouldn’t show up if you assume zero inclination means “normal”.

    • @misshap100
      @misshap100 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      are you sure, isn't inclination measured relative to the spin of the sun?

    • @zzubra
      @zzubra 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@misshap100 You might think orbital inclinations would be measured relative to the Sun’s axis of rotation, since that is the way other orbital inclinations are typically measured, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Inclinations are measured relative to the “ecliptic”, which is the plane of Earth’s orbit. The Sun’s rotation is tipped at 7.25 degrees relative to the ecliptic. (And, the mean orbit of the gas giants is inclined about 6 degrees relative to the Sun’s equator.) Measuring relative to the Sun might be more logical, but measuring relative to the Earth’s orbit is much easier at a practical level, and this was especially true in the early days of astronomy.

    The nearest star is somewhere around 268000 AU away from our sun. When you think about it if planet 9 as hypothesized to be between 780 to 1000 AU away from our sun is very close by comparison. Technology is continually evolving, and it is just a matter of a few years or months till Planet 9 is discovered. Basically speaking, Planet 9 is right in our solar system's neighborhood, a close relative as you will.

  • @rushinbot1830
    @rushinbot1830 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Planet 9 does likely exist, but it's so far from the Sun even compared to dim Pluto and so little sunlight falls upon it to reflect back to Earth that it will be very difficult to actually observe and confirm it. Maybe we'll get lucky and just enough infrared is emitted by this planet for the JWST to discover it.

    I feel that what more likely exists out in that region of our solar system is a brown dwarf companion star to our sun. I don't think anything as small as a planet (even Jupiter sized) could have the effect on Kuiper Belt objects. It would need to be much larger, like a brown dwarf that orbits about our sun where at some points, it gets closer to our system, therefore disrupting it at those times.

    • @butchs.4239
      @butchs.4239 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@richardjones3308 Other possibilities don't preclude the possibility that there's an undiscovered planet in our solar system though. By definition what they're doing is attempting to prove a hypothesis, which is part of the scientific method. Likewise with the planet X theory, unless it's found it's just a theory and doesn't preclude other possibilities. Now say in looking for Planet X they find a wandering star of the correct mass and can trace it's trajectory backwards to a point where it was close enough to the sun to have caused the planet's orbits to shift. But, being true believers in Planet X, they hide all the evidence so they can keep cashing the grant checks in the search for a planet. That would be abandoning the scientific method.

  • @albertperson4013
    @albertperson4013 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    According to the scientists who are studying this, Planet 9 has an orbit of 17,000 years with an inclination of either 18 or 48 degrees, unless there is more recent evidence indicating otherwise. I've also heard that this object may be responsible for the Kuiper Belt's existence...

    The cases that you put forward seem to suggest a foregone conclusion but we are discovering that the Universe is far more bizarre than we can imagine. If there is a planet nine is it a gas giant or a rocky planet? Did it form as part of the Solar System or is a captured object? Following that line of thought what if all the anomalous cases that you cited are due to a passing object? Even the theory that the Sun had a twin that has long since moved away could answer some of the questions.

    Planet nine is a dwarf planet. There may be four of them beyond Pluto. I know currently planetary scientist may claim more, but officially and eventually it may come down to four. This will give the solar system a total of 12 potentially inhabitable planets (4 rocky, 4 gas and 4 dwarf). But could not the inclinations of the planets be a result of the late heavy bombardment.
    Maybe those 5 subjects of evidence could be caused by different planetary phenomena or movements. Oh, I just heard, ad you said five separate solutions.

    This research describes this motion of the Solar System as a Cork Screw effect while orbiting around the galaxy... This would cause a slight angle in Planetary Orbits around the Sun...

    • @JohnJones-ct9pr
      @JohnJones-ct9pr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We can only "see" what emit's or reflects light. The moon for instance does not emit light of it's own , it reflects light from the sun. So we can see it. Moving to the stars they are suns and emit light even from millions and millions of light years away. BUT we can "see" those star's planets by the periodic dimming of those stars light as the planets cross the line between us and those stars.If you are out late at night and there is a light down the road and the light dims for a second it would not be unreasonable to guess that something moved across the path of that light , like a deer or a person. We can also infer the existence of remote objects by the deviance of celestial bodies motions from the expected motions. Hope this makes sense coming from a non scientist like me. If anyone can explain this better please do so and I will delete this.

    • @Travis.Ladegast
      @Travis.Ladegast 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      And the only reason why the moon is considered a "moon", is because it is a satellite of a planet. Ganymede, the largest moon in our solar system is bigger then Mercury. But we have not reclassified it... Just saying.

    • @djhavenm
      @djhavenm 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, Ceres, the largest planet in the asteroid belt, was considered a planet between 1801 and the 1850s, along with other asteroids, Juno, Pallas and Vesta. Pluto had not yet been discovered, and Neptune (the only planet discovered by mathematical prediction rather than direct observance--Planet Nine could be the second one) so textbooks back then may have said that we had ten planets.
      By comparison, Pluto was officially classified as a planet for 75 years or so, so we're not tipping that much bigger of a sacred cow by re-classifying it.
      If we were to classify Pluto as a planet, then our solar system today might be considered to have fourteen planets if you include the other dwarf planets (include Ceres, the only asteroid dwarf planet). Eris, discovered in 2005, has greater mass than Pluto and has only a slightly smaller diameter, Plus, there are at least six more objects that have been discovered that could end up being classified as dwarf planets, so if we count those as planets, that could bring us to twenty.
      It just shows how fluid our classification of solar system objects are and as we learn more about them, these classifications might change again.

    • @Travis.Ladegast
      @Travis.Ladegast 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally, I think it would be amazing to see an earth(ish) sized moon orbiting around a Jupiter+ sized planet similar to the Avatar movie. I think that would throw our definition of planet into complete disarray. Unfortunately, I doubt I will every glimpse that in my lifetime.
      I also would have no problem stating that we had 20+ planets in the solar system.

    • @alexvoicu3210
      @alexvoicu3210 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Travis Ladegast Yeah and i would totally like to call the sun a cow and the earth “planet c-farth568” just because”
      But the facts are facts and we can’t discuss on them just because we like that way or the other.
      And the fact that pluto like many other dwarf planets is not a planet it’s irrefutable.
      Yeah many things were said between 1801 and 1850 but now we’re in 2017 and we are a much advanced society, i can’t believe that there is still people who disagree with science.
