A first-rate symphony! I especially like the four trills from woodwind at the near end of last movement.

An inspiration! I am just discovering these symphonies. This has the greatest finale so far.

I absolutely love the 3rd movement. The 4th has a fun-almost Halloween feel while the 2nd is very emotional

Regarding an atmosphere with a coda of the last movement, what is just like G.Mahler`s symphonies!

Não entendo como um compositor tão bom tenha caído no esquecimento.

"the best Symphony of modern times, one of the very few which are worthy to go down in posterity in company with the works of Beethoven and Schumann" that aged well unfortunately

If there would be no "fleeting" composers, there would be nothing for the "immortal" composers to set themselves apart from.

Particularly nice around 22:00. Should be performed more. Sounds idyllic.

Esta sinfonía es comparable a las de Mendelssohn, y en cierto modo más sugerente y misteriosa que ellas. Raff no siempre convence, pero, cuando acierts, es arrebatador.

The first movement is kinda dull, but the adagio is a revelation!

Dare I say that around 7:30 you do hear why this symphony was forgotten, the very loud counterpoint really seems to be going nowhere whatsoever, other than the utter banality that closes it at 7:54. Maybe I'm just rationalizing after the fact? Maybe Tchaikovsky seems to be "going somewhere" because I've heard his symphonies many times and I've only heard this one once? Or maybe Raff is not a very good composer?

raff is a good composer. have you listened lenore or 10th symphony? or 1st?

A good point. This kind of flaw of 'not really going anywhere' is probably more obvious in some of the finales of Raff's other symphonies. These things can irritate if you keep hearing them, like the banality of the finale of Beethoven's 5th. Probably at the time of Beethoven an audience hearing it for the first time they had not heard anything so exciting. Would you agree the finale of Mozart's Jupiter takes counterpoint to a new level in terms of arriving at something climactic?

I think it is fair to say that the counterpoint goes nowhere. However, the composers and audiences of that time were not completely obsessed with nonstop motion and direction like we are now. This symphony was one of the most played orchestral works of its time, and it is Raff's third, so it is safe to assume that he knew what the audience wanted. If he really thought that people would notice, he would not have written it. Ultimately the change in what the audience wanted could have negatively affected the music Raff already created.

It goes everywhere ~ above and beyond ~ extreme excitability ~ stimulates the senses ~ motivating intensely.

What I’m hearing you say is that the music did not develop the way you imagined it should and so therefore it’s neglect has been well deserved. A tyrant is born…
