    String Quartet No. 1, Op. 77 (1855)
    I. Mässig schnell, ruhig, breit (0:00)
    II. Sehr lustig, möhglichst rash (13:00)
    III. Mässig langsam, getragen (18:01)
    IV. Rasch (27:46)
    Milano Quartet
    Details by Edition Silvertrust:
    His String Quartet No.1 dates from 1855, the last year he spent with Liszt and the moody, nocturnal atmosphere of the work shows that master's influence, especially where Raff seeks to create original sound effects. The big, opening movement, Mässig schnell, ruhig, breit, immediately establishes the dark and brooding temperament that quickly leads to several highly dramatic episodes. Next comes a Mendelssohnian elves-dance, Sehr lustig, möglich rasch, the tempo marking literally telling the performers to play it as fast as possible. The very appealing trio section is quite lyrical and provides excellent contrast. This is followed by a long, slow movement, Mässig langsam, getragen, which begins as a simple and quiet melody (our sound-bite) that Schubert might have written. Gradually, however, Raff begins to explore a new world of tonality which no one would revisit for nearly 30 years until Hugo Wolf and the young Schönberg took up where Raff left off. In the powerful finale, Rasch, the music begins softly with echoes from the scherzo of Beethoven's 9th Symphony. The thematic material rushes onward with incredible drive.
    Writing of this work, the famous chamber music critic Wilhelm Altmann states:
    "This is an important work worthy of serious study. The formal construction of this quartet shows technique of the highest order and many ingenious tonal effects are produced."

    It's really unfair that Raff's music, such a work of genius, fell into oblivion after WW1. Every single one of the chamber works I've listened to is so dynamic, full of emotion and shows a whole display of instrumental dexterity that it is a mystery to me why we haven't put him next to other names such as Brahms.

    Sir Joseph Joachim Raff should always deserve a place of grand reputation. I'm touched and inspired by the notation arrangement and part writing in this awesome piece.

    Raff puede ser poético, sutil, y a veces, como en este cuarteto...hasta elegante.

    Thankyou ! I really enjoyed this ! Wow ! So imaginative the figures . 1st and 2nd movement in themselves should win these works more players . They's sound good before a Brahms quartet .Almost chilly music for a dark Bavarian town .Now I want to hear his piano quintet ! I will visit the symphonies again .The Busoni in comparison is immature and dull harmonically . Structure here works but it lacks of course the august charm .Raff is early 30's here so... The opening figure is fantastic . Brahms really stands high above everyone else alive at his time ! Raff was Liszt's secretary for a time ! I have now read a bunch of letters vonBulow,Clara Sch,Tchaikovsky even Brahms they all knew about this famous man and a few said his commanding reputation would collapse soon .Sad that a few who couldnt sense Brahms greatness could see eternity so surely .

    Cool piece! By the way, are you going to upload any more of Suk's or Rubinstein's quartets, or the 5 pieces by Glazunov? Just wondering.
    All the best, Bartje!

      I uploaded pretty much all of Glazunov's works for string quartet. The Five Pieces are not available on IMSLP. But hope to have all Villa Lobos quartets up, am working on No. 7. Rubinstein I already had his 2nd quartet up. His 3rd has not a decent complete performance on TH-cam. The one I liked didn't perform the slow movement.

    Very nice quartet, with the influences of Mendelssohn and Brahms so pronounced in the second movement.
    Poor Raff, this unknown, which is generally known only by the very famous "Cavatine". Many thanks to Bartje Bartmans for this great job !

      En 1855, Brahms n'avait composé qu'une seule oeuvre de musique de chambre : son premier trio op.8. Son premier quatuor à corde ne fut composé qu'en 1873. On ne trouve aucune influence de Brahms dans ce quatuor de Raff. Mendelssohn peut-être, mais Brahms, non! Raff pourrait avoir influencé Brahms, non l'inverse.

      Check thematic development in all movements. You will notice there isn't any. Tedious accompaniments and very, very un-creative counterpoint. Check those hollow octaves in the violin for instance. I could give you a measure by measure analysis but I have no time for that.

      you have very high standards haha. do you have any original works?

    • @bartjebartmans
      @bartjebartmans  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      High standards? Just analyze the piece and then analyze for instance a comparable quartet by Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms, Volkmann, Rubinstein etc. etc.

      i'm not saying this is better than brahms but i think it's enjoyable at the least. you might like his 2nd 6th and 7th more i reckon.

    • @bartjebartmans
      @bartjebartmans  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Of course it is at the least enjoyable. Why else would you think I took the time and effort to upload it?

  •  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The last chord sounds so broken. I think that's because the first violin raises its F4 too high and plays it sluggishly, which attracts the sound to the hidden but decided F#4 harmonic of the cello's D2.

      Well, not exactly... Schœnberg's chef-d'œuvre goes far beyond this essay, formally and harmonically, without underlining its richness of the ecriture, far more advanced. However, this movement is damn good per se, like the three others! A true discovery for us indeed.

    slow movement is very "Mahlerian"
