Beta stage 1 seems like it was made back when the main objective for nearly all the stages was to make it to the flag at the end. While with beta stage 3, they were testing out the concept of a wide open interior for Peach's castle, but ditched the idea once they realized it would have been rather boring to traverse.
Yeah that makes sense since it's a pretty small level. Originally I was thinking that maybe it was one of those special levels where it has only one star, but this also would make sense too.
I’m just glad Nintendo archived the level and didn’t permanently delete it. It’s nice that they care about their game’s past and didn’t destroy it forever.
Indeed unlike companies like Square Soft who just kept hitting the delete button on projects like FF3, FF7, and FF8 leading them to practically rebuild the whole game from scratch for porting purposes later
What I think that castle/fortress might be is maybe a beta wet-dry world? Notice how big the level is and that getting to the top might have required raising the water level

@Flandre Scarlet Him destroying it into a starshape is actually normal as the third phase of that battle. It's what makes the final part of it rather tough since you have to slowly throw him to the edge of the tip so you can toss him to a bomb
The Obsessive Gamer ds version is easy to complete if you want a challenge attempt a hat in time collecting every yarn, hat, token, time piece, death wish contract, badges, camera filter and clothes. Including dlc
I hope that their is a remake that has all 32 planned stages, larger stages, the graphics of mario oddessy and slightly more level and music variety but still keeping that creepy, nostalgic, happy feeling the n64 and ds version had
Whoa, the fortress tower thing also reveals that the platforms became literally all the same object when the decision was made to make then the same shape. I guess I'd always assumed that the moving ones were different objects than the non-moving ones because of the movement.

Even a few years later, this video is still a fascinating watch... I actually wonder about some of the levels shown in the B-roll footage that aren't seen anywhere else, like the old Jolly Roger Bay, with a very different sunken pirate ship, and a strange Boo-filled room with dark brick walls and a blue carpet. I don't think anyone knows how these levels would've looked back in those testing stages.
the red spike that you need to moonjump to reach, that most likely was used to test the second bowser stage where he is on a red platform that if he jumps, it tilts and sends mario to the lava if you are not careful. using the levitation cheat you can see the spike under the platform and kinda looks like the same red tip (the rest is under the lava)
Beta Stage 3 would have been cool to use as a Bonus like stage riding off Super Mario World for the SNES like collecting all the coins and receiving some kind of reward. I honestly feel that was what it was intended to be originally before it was discarded.

I don't have the rom for, the footage is from others who are credited that never released the rom in the first place. I don't intentionally extend anything. Also I didn't have many subs back then for 8 minutes to matter. It was a few more videos down and even then the Mario Kart video is only 6 minutes long despite having a good pool of subs then.

If you are referring to that star found in the Penguin Slide, I believe it is actually a problem of decompressing the Rom that made it look like there is one there when there isn't. Swankybox explains this one I believe
Well they model for the whole level was found and found to a set scale already, so when they imported Mario in, he was whatever size the scale of the level was.

Yeah pretty much, though that one I wouldn't call Whomps Fortress. We need an even earlier leak to have the beta versions of levels like Snowmans Land in their original form. Hopefully one day

I imagine you mean "Test" Map, but no there is nothing that indicates that this is a test map. It doesn't have the simplistic design of one, the checkerboard pattern, the solid colour patterns, and the file name even does say it.
Yeah it's very complex to get these to work as they came in raw map and object files that need to be injected into roms. Odd thing is that the ones who have dug through them don't seem to release their roms to the public too

I got the maps themselves but the amount of work required to put them in the game is staggering and anytime I ask the Discord server that has people who have actually input them into the game, they refuse to release them.

I dont think we have every level yet, i think there are some in earlier roms with levels that haven't been found yet
The Beta is so much better, more enemies, cut out multiplayer, yoshi was intended to be playable, removed textures..
Warmer colors and textures, sad that it never got a chance.

These level sizes aren't exactly the original sizes, people searching through the leak had to guess the size.
Well they model for the whole level was found and found to a set scale already, so when they imported Mario in, he was whatever size the scale of the level was.

SM64's engine was used for Ocarina of Time as a basis, but it was heavily modified and upgraded.
