I have been up all night with my newly adopted shelter pup, thinking he ate something he shouldn't have, cleaning up every single white puddle he "vomited" up, rubbing his back, thinking I didn't keep a close enough eye on him his first week in his new home. I was about to take him to the ER vet then it occurred to me to see what kennel cough even sounds like - we're still obviously going to the vet today, but this video (and others on YT) were a huge weight off my shoulders; I'm not surprised this pup picked it up at our local shelter, I just feel so bad for him feeling so miserable. Thanks so much!

Kennel Cough or a cough due to allergies will improve in a few days to a week. Benadryl (1mg per pound twice daily) and aspirin (5 mg per pound twicedaily) may help

Unlikely to respond, but much appreciated if you do! Ive found your videos to be extremely helpful. I have an 8 year old puggle who started a cough/hack similar to that of kennel cough probably about 2-3 years ago. It generally occurs maybe once a day or once every other day. Often in the morning he shoots out of bed and does the hack hack gag. Shakes off and is just fine. Sometimes will do it at night. Essentially the same pattern. He gets his vaccinations/care routinely. Eats grain free and freeze died raw stella. Maybe a few pounds overweight. About 33 lbs, goal would be 30. Eats great. Can go on long walks no issues. Going to start the DM and Claritin. Our Vet shook off the video I had shared showing him doing it. Said it could be allergies or tracheal issues but offered no treatment solutions. He seems fine, but it must be uncomfortable and some of the times is a really strong loud forceful honk. Othertimes a milder cough. We use a harness so im not sure how much it would be tracheal issues. Seems would be allergies vs bronchitis (chronic?) well thanks for your videos, they are great!!!!

My dog is 2. He’s a couple lbs over weight (goal weight is 15 and he’s 18) but he walks about 7 miles a week on average and plays with my boys everyday in the yard. He’s a happy, playful pup has a good appetite and sleeps well. He’s never been kenneled. But he’s made this sound all his life. The hack/gag/throw up in his mouth and swallow it. I am guessing since he’s done it all his life it’s allergies? Question is... is it allergies to his food? Or something outdoors? I do think it’s worse in the spring/fall. Vet says he fine, but it’s kind of gross...

My 13 yr old dog Lance just went to the vet for diarrhea and had tests run on blood that cleared all problems of liver, diabetes etc... while as he got better as far as the infection while he began to do this cough with the retching sound, in the middle of the night he was so bad neither he nor I could get any sleep. I pulled up this video and began giving him the Robitussin DM as shown in the video picture and he today after 3 treatments is better already. He coughs less and does not have the coughing over and over just once or twice and then sleeps. I took his collar off and I am feeding him chicken and rice so he has o scratchy food in his throat. giving him 1 tsp every 6 hours, he weighs 43 lbs and already is sleeping better, wakes up coughs one to two times and then rests. thank you so much for dong this video!!!

Thank you for all the wonderful videos! Sometimes when you go to the vet the dogs don't make the same noises or behave the same ways. Makes it very challenging. Your videos help give me an idea what I'm dealing with, then I can tell the vet what I suspect & have them confirm it. Much easier than just telling them they "really were coughing earlier" & trying to describe the cough.

My 12+ year old male lab just had this. I thought he was on his way out, so did the vet. He received the antibiotic you mentioned that you mentioned clavelox, along with prednisone. He had a bad reaction to the prednisone and it was discontinued. He is back to his old self now, but was very scary. Your cough imitations are funny but also very helpful for us to identify what’s going on with our dogs. Thank you🐾🐕❤️

This is great info. My little doxie developed kennel cough after a stay for a week at the kennels. (on vacation) His coughing and gagging was lasting longer than I thought so I took him in and immediately the vet said it was a heart condition. He has the gag at the end of the cough which I thought was kennel cough. He has total energy and none of the other symptoms of a heart condition. They wanted 450 dollars for 3 meds, xrays, and blood work. I passed because my gut told me it was not a heart condition. This video helped and proved without a doubt my sense of what was wrong was indeed kennel cough. Thanks so much for putting the video up.

Hi, My small Jack Russel passed away yesterday morning after the vet said that she had kennel cough on Friday, she was gagging like the kennel cough, she also had fluid coming out of her noise and mouth, also a pale touge. The vet just said that this is normal for kennel cough and i was sent on my way with the drugs to help. I wasn't told to go back to the vets if she was still finding it hard to breath. She was a lovely dog and I miss so much.

    • @lukeGGlee

Pale tongue would indicate a heart condition or something obstructing bloodflow. That sounds like a misdiagnosis

  • @Sleep_is_delicious
    @Sleep_is_delicious 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Thank you Greg.
You were right, it was kennel cough, but the kennel cough covered up the Parvo disease which she also caught from the shelter. I was told that loss of appetite was part of kennel cough, so by the time she started eating again, and the symptoms of parvo had shown, the virus had already spread and she tested a strong positive for Parvo and it was too late.
I just want you to know that I'm really glad people like you exist as nobody should have to watch their dog get put to sleep.

This video was very helpful when I first watched it 6 months ago.. My dog coughed exactly like the kennel cough shown here. I treated him as advised, but just found out this past week that he had end-stage lymphosarcoma (lung cancer). It was identified with lab work. Suggest anyone whose dog has what they think is kennel cough, please take your dog to the vet for lab work. My beautiful rescue boy died this past weekend. I had three wonderful years with him and hopefully made up for the horrible abuse he suffered before I got him. RIP sweet boy.

My dog just started coughing like this, so I immediately thought he was choking, so I googled what to do. Turns out he's just coughing. I stuck my fingers down throat and performed a doggy heimlich until he stopped, and thought I fixed it. Then I stopped giving him attention, and he started up again. Poor guy, he had his person actually gagging him and holding him upside down on top of the cough.

It could be congestive heart failure. The heart gets bigger and pushes on the trachea causing irritation and the gag reflex kicks in. Seeing a vet is important if your dog has that gaging sound at the end. My chihuahua has it.

December 26rh early morning we found her laying lifeless ... she was 14 year old never any serious health problems she was eating during the day she could see fine, hearing was still Good, she was just a normal older dog loved to play still like we had no clue we’d just lose her like this ... my heart is completely shattered right now.... Debra Zz I know! It's ridiculous! I am going to buy animal health insurence for my dog as he is training for service work and his health is upmost important but my cat can't go on it as when you add more animals it becomes too expensive. Vets are insanely expensive and its sad as we tend to not get the medical care for our pets as we should simply because we can't afford it. If that was a cause to not have pets then no one should have pets except the rich. I mean, come on!

  • @mgarcia2445

I'm glad you mentioned that you don't do annual vaccines anymore, just once every 3 years, and that older dogs probably don't need them. I confirm this for my three dogs via titers. Two are older - 10 and 14 (don't get shots anymore) - and one is just 4. The little one had her puppy shots and her first-year vaccines. After that, she hasn't had to have them anymore because she is more than protected since her first-year shots! So many people are unaware of this, and they give annual shots which are so bad for the dogs' immune systems. Pet owners, please do your research and do titers before having your animals vaccinated every year!

My dog recently died after suffocating to death from what my animal doctor said, an enlarged heart. The thing is my dog had that gag at the end which you said was for kennel cough, not heart. The noise he made also sounded like reverse sneezing (small dog) and was misdiagnosed by other vets saying theres nothing wrong with him. He was also treated for kennel cough. But Im still not 100% sure what he had. I just dont want others go through watching there own dog suffocate to death like I did. Just get your dog thouroughly checked out if issues are happening often.

Losing your dog must have been very hard. Thank you for sharing your story. 🙏🏻 How long did he have the cough before he passed? My senior has had a cough for years. But recently it has gotten worse. I’ve taken her to the vet many times and they keep telling me it’s “probably” allergies or bronchitis. There is a gag at the end as well. I’ve tried allergy medicine and it didn’t seem to help. I’m just trying to figure this out because I hate seeing her coughing at all hours of the day and night.

Grunderssen Bjerknes agree. My dog has the same exact kennel cough described in the video and was treated for kennel cough for over a month. Nothing worked. I took my dog back to the vet and insisted on an xray/radiograph to determine another cause. Sure enough, his heart is enlarged. I'm currently treating him for that and hopefully it will make a difference. He seems to be better ever since taking it.

Thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to make this informative and concise video. I did not know what was wrong with my dog as she gets the Bordetella vaccine, but was doing the cough/ gag since last night! It is good to know that even with the vaccine that dogs can still get Kennel Cough. Besides the cough, she is pretty much her normal self. Off to get the DM OTC medicine. Keep making these great videos.

Could be kennel cough or hay fever. You can try a tsp of robitussin DM twice daily. Get a check up if it gets worse. You can also try 10mg of benadryl 2 x daily

Through my thirty plus years, I've not seen or suspected transmission. I've seen thousands of kennel cough cases and not heard of families catching the disease. Hay fever causing bronchitis can look just like kennel cough and may be another possibility.

This is interesting. My min pin has an enlarged heart with chronic fluid in her upper lungs. Her cough sounds more like the kennel cough than the barky asthmatic cough you showed. She also does the retching at the end. Thankfully, she has no kennel cough. (Poor thing was neglected before I adopted her.)

I have been told twice now by two different vets my large dogs had kennel cough (only one had come from a kennel. Turned out it was raw hide and pigs feet chews. I took them away and they were fine, gave it back and they started coughing again. took it away and it stopped.I am sure there is Kennel cough somewhere, but it seems an easy diagnoses since no test seem to diagnose it, and the meds are expensive. My first move would be get rid of the raw hide and pigs feet.

He probably has kennel cough. It does take a few weeks to get over it.He may need an xray to rule out heart problems or asthma. That's how we diagnose heart and lung problems, with an xray

my boy has been hacking like the first dog. I brought a foster in that was rescued from a shelter back in November 2019. The dog went into a foster with a few other dogs, so I assumed when I heard this 12 year old foster hacking that it could be kennel cough. My dog began hacking with a wet hack and gag at the end a few weeks later. My dog is 17 years old. He had all kinds of test, and his blood work came back very good. He does have a slight thinning of the trachea toward the top, so the doctor suspected bronchitis. He is also sneezing. Started him on the chewable clavomax, but after 7 days, started throwing up. He has had Clavomax before but I pill form and had no issues. He is now started on Doxcycline. I am just hoping it is not dental related because he is due for a cleaning, and has a loose tooth. At 17 not sure what to do

Our dog started having a cough last night, but has had a concurrent cough for quite a while (every few days, usually while eating even though we've raised his food and water bowls). We don't have the money to take him to be seen. Really struggling right now. Hoping it's just mild kennel cough and his immune system fights it off.

I adopted a 9 month old GSD mix from the shelter two weeks ago and he was promply diagnosed with whipworms. He had his first three doses of meds but is still having diarrhea. :/ Also, ever since I got him, I've noticed that his breathing is quite rapid all the time, and he pants quite a bit. I've caught him coughing a few times, always followed by a gag, as well as some reverse sneezing. The shelter tested him for heartworms and kennel cough but is it possible one of the tests showed a false negative? I'm very worried about him. :(

eating dust can be a reason of kennel cough? and is it normal to vomit when he gags?
