You can get remanufactured or aftermarket batteries from reputable companies who rebuild old batteries. They are a fraction of the cost from what you get in a dealer.
Speedkar99 recently made a great explainer video about the Toyota hybrid eCVTs. I know that it's a power transmission whose ratio can be varied continuously, but it's so completely different from a CVT that it really should have a different name. It's basically two electric motors and an open diff.
I own a 2011 Lexus RX350/Non Hybrid with 180K miles. Bought used with 50K miles. Fantastic car! No squeaks & all of the electronics work perfectly (including Navigation). Should last easily to 300K miles. I did replace the radiator & serviced the rear differential. Other than that, frequent oil changes At recommended intervals.
We have 2 Lexus. My is a 2004 es 330 & my wife has a 2005 RX330. Both have just over 150K miles. I love the quietness of the cars & the quality. yes, we are seniors and don’t drive as much we do drive and enjoy driving these cars. Very few things have gone wrong. Just regular maintenance is all.
I test drove a maybe 2005 ES330 around 2017 and thought I had died and gone to heaven - it was so QUIET !!! I LOVED IT !!! But the air suspension was on the way out and I was told replacing those would cost more than the asking price for the car.
No one could sell me a used vehicle because of gas mileage. I just don't care about that. All I care about is the mechanical shape of the vehicle. I look for signs of lack of maintenance and so on and so forth. No one will ever sell me a new overpriced mostly plastic soon to fail electronics vehicle. I bought my first and last new in 02. Used is my go to when I completely wear one out.
I bought my 2022 RX450h in late 2022 and this was the last model year with a V6. Best car I’ve ever owned, rides like a dream, all the power I need, 30 MPG, and ZERO recalls. As A middle aged adult, I sometimes feel like it’ll outlast me. I’m glad that I did my research and didn’t purchase the new turbo 4 cylinder RX’s with more engine noise and less HP. Great videos Scotty and I truly enjoy them.
The 3.5 liter V6 in my GS 350 is one of the best engines Toyota ever made. Smooth and powerful and makes a great sound. Only complaint is that she's a gas hog only averaging 21 mpg.
Have a 2007 Prius with now 300k. Runs great. Near zero issues. Bought with 105k. Highly recommend. Replaced hybrid battery at 200k. Lifetime transferable warranty for $1500.

10 year old tires? Get rid of those. I can't believe they are not dry rotted. Spending $600+ for new tires is well worth the price to potentially save your life.
2.5 Liter naturally aspirated inline four. That's the go-to engine for me, and that's the engine hybrids should have too. Runs like a dream, and lasts a LONG time. If you're buying a minivan, get a naturally aspirated V6. If you're getting a truck or van, get a naturally aspirated V8 if you can, but a naturally aspirated V6 is a good option for if you never haul anything heavy or pull a trailer. If you haul heavy stuff or pull a trailer, the V8 is the better choice because it has power for days.
For a pickup that gets worked hard, there's nothing better than the _inline_ 6-cylinder engine. There's a reason that every utility truck (power companies, water distribution, etc.) used that for almost all of their work trucks. The flaw was that many were combined with the wrong transmission, burning that out early with high-speed highway driving, which is why they were very frequently sold early. Very good torque, excellent efficiency at cruise, very economical idle. Just have to rebuild that differential with something geared to your actual use case. V8 is great if you pull heavy loads, but again, factory transmissions are geared wrong for almost every actual use case, and you damn well better find out and plan a proper rebuild before it's badly worn!
I found a used 2007 Lexus RX400h yesterday with 149k miles on it. I'm taking it to a toyota dealership tomorrow morning for a pre-purchase inspection. If everything checks out, I'm going to buy it. Asking price is $7500. I hope it a good car and a good value for $7500. I test drove it and I was impressed. Wouldn't mind owning one.
These Lexus RX are all great cars Hybrids are no exception , the Hybrid battery are recommended to be replaced at around 150, 0000 , but they can go to 200,000, it varies , and replacement costs are reasonable these days ,,there are other vendors aside from the Lexus dealerships , so to each his own ,all great cars , thanks Scotty 😊 We always have lots of fun !
@@michaelkatz7862 I test drove a 2007 Lexus RX 400h w/149,000 miles yesterday and I was very impressed. I'm going to take it to a toyota dealership tomorrow morning for a pre-purchase inspection. If everything checks out, I'm going to buy it for the wife. They're asking for $8 grand for it. I hope it's a good car and I get great value for it. It says the timing belt was replaced at 90k miles in 2015. I hope the battery will last a while. Do you know if yours have had the battery replaced or is it the original battery. That's my only hesitation with the purchase is what you hear about hybrid cars and how expensive the batteries are when they go out.
Neighbor bought one from little old lady on our street. Dealer maintained with 150k miles. Had it 3+ years with zero issues. Looks new. Another oldster on street has rx330 with 50k on it. I told him I would buy it from him, he is 80+, and drive he or wife to Dr appointments. He only drives to Safeway...3 miles. He laughed said your 4th in line...
@@Perich29was it a Toyota? They use Nickel metal hydride batteries are usually pretty bullet proof. Your three battery failures were they on the early Prius hybrid because they did have problems with them because they didn’t have enough cooling but they got that repaired a few years later by adding cooling vents, etc.
@@Patriotsforlife5 I mean a hybrid battery costs the same as an automatic transmission in a gas car (if not even less), and the ecvts literally never break, so there’s not really any tradeoff in reliability.
i just traded-in my last hybrid, a 2023 Toyota Corolla hybrid. Made in Japan, fantastic fit and finish. (bought a 2024 4Runner MIJ replacement). I drove the 'rolla 19K miles in 18 months. I did NOT become independently wealthy from the gasoline money I saved from the real 50mpg at 77mph on the interstates, and the 62mpg I got in city driving. But drive it on a curvy road, and the 'Rolla drove me insane. The electric steering, which allows the Toyota to offer automatic lane centering (hands free for 30 seconds at a time) was nice; BUT the granny installed by Toyota overriding my choice for cornering speed, and automatically applying the brakes when I was working on my max speed apexing of curves, was the deal breaker. And in a straight line a car turning off the road hundreds of feet ahead of me would alert the red screen of death and apply emergency braking from it's false reading of the situation. kinda felt like I had a target painted on the back, hoping the toyota's auto brake slam wouldn't give me an anal injection from the car behind me. This note is a warning to tailgaters of these Granny grocery getters, Granny might not have last word in braking; so unless a tailgater's reaction time is faster than a toyota micro-chip, they will be blamed, not Granny, when they give Granny a love tap due to that pesky Toyota microchip. My new 4Runner is old school with all my control and all my fault in all cornering decisions. Still has the squirrelly emergency braking chip in it though. Maybe Toyota should put one of those triangle slow moving vehicle signs on the back of all toyotas. Oh the battery, once Toyota started cooling the batteries 5 or six years ago, battery longevity is greatly increased. But the savings realized from gasoline cost savings will still not cover the eventual battery replacement and rengerative braking electric generator when those parts eventually fail. So, had a new one, don't like all the new technology taking the driver out of the equation, so will pass on future purchases of same.
The more gadgets and electronics any car, boat or motorcycle has the more things to go wrong. Nice Lexus but I don't care if it's brand new or 20 years old, I don't need some computer car monitoring my gaseous events. Or anything else!
I bought a 2021 Toyota Venza new and love it. It gets 45 MPG routinely. I live next to the Utah mountains and when I go up there the CVT is fabulous. My Toyota Sienna (automatic) would thrash around trying to figure out what gear to be in going up the mountain, but his thing drives smoothly. Sure, I wish it had a manual transmission, but since I can't get one, this is the next best thing. Going down the mountain I shift it down to avoid burning up my brakes. I'm not sure if this is cool to do with a CVT or not.
Those da,n Venzas are very nice, almost Lexus level. They never really showed up on my island in Hawaii due to pandemic. Only seen 3 or 4 and all at Costco. Every owner loved theirs. Most bought in US continent and shipped in.

We had a 2014 Hyndai Sonata Hybrid which we enjoyed for three years until the hybrid transmission went. Next time, we'll dump it at the ten year mark. Your mileage may vary,
Scotty, I drive 32 miles to get to work then another 32 miles to get home. That’s a lot of miles. My question is: what is a good reliable work vehicle that gets good gas mileage? I live in north east Ohio. We get bad weather sometimes in the winter.
What is the calendar lifetime of the hybrid battery pack? Isn't a 2011 (13 years old) about to age out of the battery even if it is not high mileage? Does a hybrid car limit where you can take it for service? For example, can your "corner mechanics" or "tire store" replace brake pads or change struts, or do you have to take it to the Lexus dealer, even if the work doesn't involve the hybrid system
Your corner mechanics or tire store can work on them easily 😂 just look up to tutorials on how to dis engage the parking brake in the back and everything is regular
My 2006 Toyota Highlander XL Hybrid is still getting good mileage on its original hybrid battery. 191K miles, I do not want to replace it no matter how wonderful the new cars are.
@@jasoncoreyhyken4091nope just metal shavings no leaks but still bent the engine rod bad. And she was riding like a dream I will replace the engine but I’m not sure if it’s the same exact v6 engine in the other 350s or it’s built differently than the hybrid engine
14 RX non hybrid I bought new, ZERO repairs since new, best I've ever owned in 45 years of driving. You couldn't give me a new RX. Just ordered $1,200 worth of wear and tear replacement parts from Toyota before they're discontinued. Brakes, struts, shocks, water pump...
Hey Scotty, I have a 2019 Honda civic with the 2.0 litre engine. I’m wondering what you would think about removing the hood insulation blanket. Would there be any drawbacks to removing it?
WHAT?? I just bought a LandCruiser 150 with the 3,0 l turbo charged diesel engine. And I shouldn`t have done that...??? I am curious to know why? Or is this only about the hybrids? What about the LandCruiser 2025 with the hybrid engine? Or the Lexus GX550 with the twin turbo V6?
The best way to buy a used vehicle is to get one with 18,000 miles on it. All of the bugs are worked out, and the price is about 1/2 to 1/3 of the new price unless it's an EV, and then you could almost get them for free. lol
I am not buying any vehicle anymore. I am keeping my 2006 Chevy Impala SS with its 5.2 V8 engine, and my 2018 Ford Taurus SE with its 3.5 V6 with their internal combustion engine. I don't trust any EV or any new vehicle. All are so expensive and Scotty is full of downer information on most vehicles.😮
But the hybrid battery is probably around $4500 .... As compared to $15,000 for the Tesla pack. That V6 will easily go another 11 years and 150,000 miles. I'd spend another $7k on that hybrid and drive it another 10 years myself.
The hybrid battery actually lasts approx 15-20 years, some I believe lasted even more. But even if the battery is over, it's not an end of the world. The new battery doesn't cost like a new car and it's not so much work to replace it like a EV battery. These things could be also reconditioned or partially replaced and run few years more if you aren't ready to pay for the new battery.
How long will a Lexus /Toyota hybrid battery last? I kind of question buying a 2011 Lexus RX if it has the original battery pack. The battery packs generally last 10-12 years. That is one expensive bill to replace a hybrid battery pack.
Hey Scotty. Why aren't you advocating the remanufacturing of existing cars and trucks?. It has to be a lot cheaper than buying new. And BMW is doing this. And why haven't you suggested Chinese auto plants in the US just like Toyota and Honda?

Asking price is $7500. I hope it a good car and a good value for $7500. I test drove it and I was impressed. Wouldn't mind owning one.
These Lexus RX are all great cars Hybrids are no exception , the Hybrid battery are recommended to be replaced at around 150, 0000 , but they can go to 200,000, it varies , and replacement costs are reasonable these days ,,there are other vendors aside from the Lexus dealerships , so to each his own ,all great cars , thanks Scotty 😊 We always have lots of fun !
These slightly older, early-to-mid-2010's Lexus RX 450h's are the best hybrid mid-size SUV's in the used vehicular market.

That's my only hesitation with the purchase is what you hear about hybrid cars and how expensive the batteries are when they go out.

I'm never buying hybrid because we had one and we went through 3 battery and it cost $2500.
Yeah until the battery goes out and then it’s a very expensive bill. No thanks. Gas is king!

Great family car, has something for everyone
i just traded-in my last hybrid, a 2023 Toyota Corolla hybrid.
Exactly why I will never buy a newer vehicle.
I refuse to buy anything that tells me/overrides MY driving decisions…I’ll keep my money, their loss.
The best one is 3.3 V6 because it’s made from cast iron and really durable

Ok sir..

Go to a dealer for new battery: expensive. Ask someone and find a little shop to replace the battery: save thousands. That’s what my son in law did.
@@Preston_Smithits not expensive but thats why we have single digit iq people like yourself 😂
After 8 years the batteries will start to degrade faster. This is a 13 year old hybrid. It's doomed.
But the hybrid battery is probably around $4500 .... As compared to $15,000 for the Tesla pack. That V6 will easily go another 11 years and 150,000 miles. I'd spend another $7k on that hybrid and drive it another 10 years myself.
FYI, I have a 2006 Highlander Hybrid that is still running without any issues.
Have a 2010 Prius with 280k miles on it…4 banger, no battery issues, no engine problems, easy to work, brakes last FOREVER, just change fluids.
Someone forgets that it’s incredibly cheap to replace those batteries so you can go another 200k mileage 😂
Toyota started in 2001 with the 1st generation Prius
How long will a Lexus /Toyota hybrid battery last? I kind of question buying a 2011 Lexus RX if it has the original battery pack. The battery packs generally last 10-12 years. That is one expensive bill to replace a hybrid battery pack.
