As a Really Basic historical spinner, I have to say Thank-you! you explain Why it works, as well as how, not just "Do This..." and that makes a difference. Some people may not Have a beautiful supported spindle or Drop spindle right now, and this gives them an idea of where they might want to get started, or even think about creating their own "In a pinch" spindle to get them started! Thanks! BTW, I WANT your Navaho!!

I just picked up some inexpensive bits to make a drop spindle, but my first one was in college when I decided to do some spinning on a whim and made one from an old wooden spoon and a zip tie 😆
This was great. The only part of the suspended spindling I really don't get is how you unwind the fiber from the shaft in order to add it to the cop. I feel once I figure that out I can stop my current park and draft and really get my spindles flying. And I love your dress, much as I'm a jeans and t-shirt gal I grew up wearing dresses like that and it's great to see them still being appreciated.
Just found your channel and I wanted to say thank you for such great information... I love your personal style too!!! I myself JUST began spinning tonight on a makeshift spindle because my daughter made the one I bought disappear on me 😂(kids! 🙄) thankfully I didn’t spend much on it since it was a starter (got it on sale for $5 thankfully!) and I was just hoping you MIGHT be able to help by pointing me in the right direction to find the style of the dark one that has the built in hook as well as the one with the point at the bottom that you used the little steel/stone almost ash tray looking bowl/plate with... I picked up the wool and drop spindle on a whim while at my local fiber arts center but they only carry one type and none of the bowls at this time and near me places that carry spinning supplies are pretty much nonexistent... anywho... thanks in advance if your able to point me in the right direction!!!!

Great video! It wasn't too long and was very informative. I haven't tried support spindles yet and you have me interested. Which one would you recommend for a beginner. to using them. I love using my drop top whorls and turkish spindles. I did check the link you shared for Paradise Fibers and they are out of stock on the Navajo Floor Spindle.

I think that because you're already a drop spindle spinner, I would recommend starting with a support spindle that's similar. I tried starting with a Russian spindle first and was frustrated. When I got my Mirkwood, I found it much easier to get consistent yarn.
I am absolutely loving supported spinning. The problem is I only have 3 spindles and one bowl so far. I think so far, my favourite is my Russian one. I really want to find a good tall bowl like your green one, are they as wonderful to work with as I think they would be?
I am so glad you enjoy support spinning! It can be tricky, lol. I have to be honest, I don't use the tall bowl very often because I wear dresses so often.... it's awkward- lol. I actually like the tiny bowl in the bean bag best.

Have you used other types of fiber on the Navajo spindle? What kind would you recommend?
I have! It's a pretty versatile support spindle that likes the longer staple length fibers. So any longer wool would work well. I'm sure there are spinners who have spun plant fibers, but I really feel like there are better tools for that. Thank you! I do make a lot of my dresses. Nearly all of my patterns are from Mrs.Depew, but a few are from the vintage lines in current Simplicity, McCall's and Butterick catalogs.
Just found you and glad I did. I was recently given a drop spindle and was trying to get the hang of using. I found myself "cheating" with the park and draft method and spinning the spindle much like you do with the supported ones. I was relieved to see how you spin, and I am wondering if a supported spindle would be a better choice for me to try to learn with? I'll be looking more at your other videos to try and learn more. Thank you for sharing you knowledge and skill with us all. P.S. I love your dress, it looks so lovely on you. Oh, and might you be located near the winery you mentioned? I'm a bit to the north of there in the next county over.
Thank you! Spinning tools all have their own personalities. I've stopped using drop spindles for my introduction to spinning classes. I'm finding Turkish spindles are more new user friendly, especially because they can be spun either supported or drop style 🥰

Hello, when the video was at 17:30 minutes, what bowl were you useing with the mirkwood, and is it the one you would recommend for it? I've never done supported spindling and I think I would like to try it out. I loved using my top whorl drop spindle with park and draft, but wasn't a fan of the turkish spindle with all the dropping I was doing. Also, is this the one you would recommend for a beginner, or is there a similar one at a lower price point that would be nice to work with as well?
I was using the bowl that came with my Horst spindle from Germany, and no I would not recommend it because it slowed the Mirkwood spindle down. It's really hard to recommend a good first support spindle because they're like wheels and each one has its own characteristics. Check out Support Spindles Anonymous on Facebook. That's going to be a great place to see support spindle options and read reviews on different makers.
The last support spindle with the hook on the end (the black one)- would that be good for spinning cotton? I have a bunch of cotton roving but I have regular top whirl spindles which I know are too big and heavy. Also, I'm very interested in Tibetan spindles, I've never used a support spindle before but I'd love to try them- great video! 🤗💐💝🌷

The wheel behind me is a Kromski Mazurka 😊 I have a Minstral too and I love it! Honestly, I've never been able to consistently spin cotton on a spindle, but the Galen tahkli style would work.
If you said, I apologize for missing it, but what makes the heavier weight easier to spin?
I think, and I should've added this, it's personal preference. For me, the heavier spindles spin longer with better balance, so I tend to get much more consistency in my singles.

Thank you! 😊 I believe the spindle in the video is a bottom whorl hybrid. Many of the traditional spindles seem to have been used with the spinners lap as support.
