    Your love of fiber arts is so genuine that I cannot help but be infected. You are right, there are not enough "spinners" in the world to help us learn this wonderful art so I thank you so very much for making such calming, beautiful and informative videos.

    Hi Lisa, I am from Singapore. It is unheard of to do spinning here lol, so I bought a support spindle and learning from you. Thank you for all you are doing, for us in the world. Love your podcasts. Keep making them.

    Hi Lisa! I personally prefer longer podcasts, and enjoy your longer podcasts. As others have said, it makes me feel like i'm knitting/spinning with a friend! I decided to purchase my first spindle from Woodland Handcrafts, I have admired their asthetics for so long! Hoping to get it in the next couple of weeks. I felt like it was a sign when you released this video, and Ply Magazine just came out with an amazing support spindle issue!

    I just found your podcast and feel like I found a "sister". I spun for years on a spindle and finally bought a wheel a few years ago. I love the beauty and simplicity of the spindles as well as the portability. I have a louet bottom whorl that I learned on and a turkish spindle that I picked up at a fiber festival. I will look into the supported spindles as they are amazing. Thanks for the demo. Very few people that I have watched really seemed to know how to use them. I love the butterfly wrap to pick up the yarn.

    I hold the fiber in my non dominant hand. I really love spindle spinning. I was not able to catch onto to espinning or spinning in a wheel. I just found your videos and prefer the longer in depth ones over shorter videos. I use park and draft methods of spinning almost all of the time. I am very interested in seeing park and draft methods with a supported spindle and a Turkish spindle.

    Thank you for creating these videos, and for providing links to resources. I haven't spun in many years, but am taking it back up again. I've been having difficulty finding accurate lists/links for makers (so many of my old favorites are no longer available!), so your info is very helpful to me. I now regret destashing my extensive spindle collection, but am looking forward to discovering new spindles, particularly supported ones, which I rarely used previously. I've joined your Ravelry group and look forward to making some new friends there. I was one of the founders of the original Spindlers Yahoo Group (I had a different name then), which morphed into the Spindlers Ravelry group, but the focus seems to have changed a great deal... I applaud and appreciate your efforts to preserve this special, mindful craft, and to keep us apprised of craftspeople now making spindles.

    Another lovely relaxing video! I was also taught - late 1980's- to spin on a wheel by a lady who didn't like spindle spinning much. But a few years ago I decided to buy a spindle off Ian at IST Crafts when I saw his stall at a wool festival I was helping out at. I instantly fell in love with it and I have now a collection of nearly 30 which are mostly light weight top whorl spindles but I have about 6 supported spindles in that collection. When I first started spinning I have to say spindles were horrible big cluncky things but now we can get really nicely made ones from speciality woods. I do enjoy watching your channel and it has helped me to get my spinning mojo back as after spinning for so many years it does get a bit boring after a while and other "distractions" get in the way! Best wishes and happy spinning.

      So happy to find another spindle collector/spinner. I was lucky to find a nice light weight spindle for my first spindle. I notice a lot of ‘beginner’ spindles are more like boat anchors. So glad your spinning mojo is back 😀.

    Thank you for the demonstration....I will break out my abandoned support spindle and persevere. When I have finished spinning the enormous quantity of alpaca I was misguided enough to offer to spin. Your Finn locks look wonderful a special gift indeed

    • @SoulfulSpinning
      @SoulfulSpinning  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Carol. That alpaca spin sounds like a huge job. I once made the mistake of offering to spin a bit of a friend’s golden retriever fur. Made a small skein only to turn around and be handed a huge grocery bag full. I know spinners will spin on commission. Not sure I’d do that! I hope you get back to your support spindle soon 🤞.

    I’m an almost ambidextrous leftie and hold my fibre in my left hand whilst spinning my spindle with my right hand. My favourite support spindle right now is a carbon fibre and metal one made by a German spindle maker, his Etsy shop is called Spindeleien. The great thing about this spindle is that I can adjust the weight. The whorl is made from three pierced coins. They screw onto the shaft. If I want less weight I can remove a coin without removing the yarn I’ve spun. I spin as fine as possible and need a lot of twist. This little spindle spins super fast and keeps on going forever. I like to think it’s German engineering at its best.

    • @SoulfulSpinning
      @SoulfulSpinning  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’m going to check out the shop for sure. Thank you!

      @@SoulfulSpinning - I don’t know if he still has the model I got in stock. But he has a multitude of spindles available. I bought several and they’re all great. My preference being the spinning of very fine yarns, I went for the light models. All of them were well balanced and comfortable to use. My favourite though is the one made with coins.
      Should he not have any in his Etsy shop he might be willing to make you one. He responds quite fast to any inquiries.
      I know there’s a British spindle maker who also makes spindles with coin whorls. Unfortunately I can’t vouch for his customer service or his response time because I went for the German one. I’m based in the EU and it saved me a bundle on import duties. However, perhaps the US and the UK have now worked out an advantageous trade agreement that might make it more interesting for you to buy British. I could try to look up if I can find the link to that British gentleman’s webshop. Note: I don’t know either if those British spindles are adaptable by removing or adding coins and that’s part of the perks of mine.

    Hi Lisa-- I am one of your new followers and am loving what you do and demonstrate on your podcasts. I am neutral as far as liking whether a podcast is shorter or longer. My vote on that with other podcasters, as well, has been to support you in what works best for you and your style of podcasting. When it works best for you your podcast is just better. When people can let their own natural style shine while filming the podcast everything is better. Thank you for demonstrating supported spinning! All your spindles are beautiful treasures.

    Love your podcasts and happy to hear you share your knowledge, experience and joy in what you do for as long as possible. I've haven't previously consciously considered which hand I use for which purpose before so you have me watching! I hold my fibre in my right hand when spinning on my wheel but in my left when either drop or supported spindling. I 'seriously ' (😜) hope that you don't have any more spinning tools to share as you are costing me a fortune in my spinning tool envy! My only (so far) support spindle is a Mingo and Ash glass treasure that is a work of art and a sheer joy to use. I use a lustre glazed shallow ceramic bowl from a local potter who is inspired by the coast of NE Scotland and the glass spindle appears to glow as I spin.

    Hi there. I’ve just discovered your channel and I love what I have seen. I’m also a Chicagoland native, displaced to Central Illinois, and also a teacher (kind of). I started spinning a bit over a year ago on a ladybug wheel. I have not had the courage to get a spindle yet due to hand muscle pain issues, but I think they are beautiful. Thank you Lisa for this lovely podcast. I'm especially glad you enjoy Björn Peck's spindles. He is such a professional crafter. As you mentioned I encourage people to spin pulling the spindle for ergonomical reasons. So I use my right hand as spinning hand for clockwise spinning and my left hand as spinning hand for counter-clockwise spinning. I also teach my students to learn how to use both hands as spinning hand and fiber hand.

    I so appreciate your demo and showing how you flick with your left hand and draft with your right. I am left handed, but on a wheel I've always drafted with my left and held the fiber with my right hand. I've never been successful on a drop spindle....for some reason I automatically flicked with my right hand and tried to draft with my left; opposite of what I do at a wheel....and somehow never took note of that! That might explain my lack of success! I'm eager to try a supported spindle....thank you for listing all the links for suppliers!

      Veronica Kilpin That is so interesting! I think spinning like knitting is definitely a two-handed operation. In my vintage book on spinning that I am reading, Elsie Davenport teaches the reader to drop spin with the fiber in the left hand but for wheel spinning she teaches to hold the fiber in the right hand as ‘most people draft with the right hand hand when spinning on a wheel’. She also jumps right into long draw spinning. It’s from the 1950’s. Thank you for answering 💙.

    Hi, Lisa,
    This was my first time on your channel and a new subscriber. If you like doing longer podcasts I certainly love watching! For me, watching my favorite fiber arts channels is very relaxing, as well as informative. I am a total "newbie" to spinning and am very fascinated with the notion of learning to use a drop spindle.
    Though you may consider yourself 'not' tutorial level, I thoroughly enjoyed watching you spin__you definitely have a relaxed style and coordination on, both, spindle and wheel.
    With re: to dominant/non-dominant hand, I would probably learn with my dominant (right), first__however, I am interested in learning to spin "z- twist" yarn, considering the way I knit.
    Thank you for a lovely hour learning about all your beautiful spindles__and you are correct about 'one spindle is not enough', there are so many beautiful woods and styles I doubt I could stop at one, or even a few! 😱 Love your beautiful flowers, too! Who can resist peonies and columbines?!
    Looking forward to catching up on all your podcasts.

    I am very late finding you :) But if you enjoy it - then length is irrelevant - for me if I am caught in your web :) then I love to sit and get lost in the sharing!! NOw I would LOVE to buy some of that type of locks - so beautiful and clean and fluffy - I bet you enjoyed playing with them!!

    This was an amazing episode. I only spin on wheels and want to branch out and learn the craft of spindle spinning. The support looks fascinating, but I don't know if I have the patience to butterfly it off and wind it back on. Should I start with a drop spindle and which do you recommend for a beginner (one that spins forever)? Thank you so much! Those locks were heaven!!! Keep up these great videos❤ LuAnn

      I would start with a drop spindle about one ounce. In my drop spinning video I showcase makers you might look into. Snyder spindles in Etsy makes lovely affordable spindles if you want to give it a try.

    Lisa, just noticed that flicker you have. Would you tell me where you purchased it, I spin a lot from the lock. I am also a left handed spinner and draft/long draw with my left, support with my right. Thanks again for a wonderful podcast.

      I purchase it from Thresdsthrutime in Etsy. He does not have any flick carders at the moment, but if you Etsy search you can find several. Thank you for watching and answering my question!

    I like your comb you used on the locks. Pretty too. What company makes them? Which spindle company does that one at end come from? You have used in couple other videos.😊

    I might have missed this but would a weight of 24g vs 30gm make a difference in support spindles? Love your podcast

    Lisa, I'd enjoy whatever length video you'd like to make! Curious, did you make your linen top? Looks so comfortable. If so, can you share what pattern you use? I've been making some linen blend pieces and really enjoying them. Thx!

      Alas Laurie I did not make my linen top. I have a favorite shop I buy all my linen pieces from. I love linen so much for the warm months. Thank you so much for watching !

    Hi Lisa. I enjoyed your supported spindle segment. I spin my spindle with my right hand and have fibre in my left hand. By the way, Jory Freyee who makes spindles is a 'he' not a 'she'. best wishes, Helen

      Thank you! I am training myself to flick with my right hand since it does seem to be more ergonomic. Thanks for the correction about he wonderful maker that took over For Malcolm Fielding. Happy spinning!

    I spin with my dominant hand (R), and hold the fibre with the other (L). I've yet to try a properly made spindle, as I've been using the one made myself (paintbrush handle and glazed clay whorl). I can only park and draft, otherwise my spindle falls all over the place!

    What country is the Finn wool from? Is the Field of Dream yarns handspun or natural dyed?

    • @SoulfulSpinning
      @SoulfulSpinning  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here’s some info in Finn wool: www.finnsheep.org/finnsheep-history-characteristics/
      I believe the Field of Dream yarn is not naturally dyed. It is from a small producer in Australia Here is some more info: gorwm.com.au/product/field-of-dreams-dk-8-ply/

    How do you ply from a supported spindle- and what is grist

    • @SoulfulSpinning
      @SoulfulSpinning  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wind off the singles from the support spindle into balls and then ply them together. Grist is yards per pound to tell you the weight of the yarn.

    Thank you so much for another great episode, Lisa. Enjoyed it a lot.
    I am right handed and flick my spindle with right hand, holding the fiber supply in my left, both with my supported and suspended spindles. I also ply the same way.
    A couple more videos you might like - th-cam.com/video/Ld4vGKWNdaw/w-d-xo.html - this one is absolutely fascinating.
