our FIRST DAYS in VIETNAM were CRAZY / HANOI 🇻🇳

  • In this vlog we make our way to Hanoi, Vietnam and end up eating way more than we expected to.
After spending four weeks in Japan we decided to make our way to a country that we have wanted to visit for a very long time. We made our way through some of the best food that Hanoi has to offer including Pho, Banh Mi, Egg coffee and our new favourite Bun Cha.
It hasn't all been smooth sailing as we did encounter a few people trying to take advantage of us, however the majority of the people here were a true pleasure to meet.
We left Hanoi having fallen in love with the cities architecture, food and people and know that we will come back again in the future.

Originally from the Wirral, North West England we got married in 2012. After a few trips abroad we caught the #travel bug. In 2019 after 6 weeks in Japan we decided we were going to quit our jobs and take some time out to travel full time. After many delays due to the pandemic, in 2021 our dream finally came true and in November we set off on our journey.

visit Danang great vibes beach city with amazing view, they have the dragon bridge that spits out fire at night and a nearby night market as well as the buddhist temple down the coast that overlooks the city with a huge buddha statue, there also the hai van pass that rides up the mountains. there's also nearby Hoi an which is an ancient city with lost of touristy stuff to do, but its the best at night due to the latterns lighting up the water canals and streets. Also if you like nature then I would visit SAPA which has amazing rice terraces and majestic mountain views with rich ethnic culture from different minorities. Also you can visit Nha Trang which has amazing Fresh caught seafood, old Champa ruins from hundreds of years ago, mud baths, and red sand dunes on atvs nearby in Mui Ne, or if you like more Island vibes I would suggest Phu Quoc island which also has amazing fresh seafood and many islands connecting to resorts each island has a different purpose or theme and its connected by the longest cable car in the world. and has theme parks that rival Disneyland. Also Halong Bay which is one of the newest top wonders of the world with thousands of islands, perfect for kayaking or exploring caves in. Or go to Tam Coc in the town of Ninh Binh which has amazing views of rice patties along side limestone mountains that you can hike , Tam Coc has a hike that you can go up all the way to the top that has a dragon on top, best views of the sunset and super romantic

If you come back to Hanoi, highly recommend Chả Cá Lã Vọng (Vietnamese grilled fish dish) at Cha Ca Thang Long restaurant at 6B Duong Thanh street, Hoan Kiem district. It is a delicious traditional speciality of Hanoi.
One historical coffee shop offering original egg coffee you should give it a try is Dinh cafe shop at 13 Dinh Tien Hoang street, opposite Hoan Kiem Lake. The cafe is still run by the same family that created egg coffee (cafe Giang). The owner is the daughter of Mr.Giang who invented egg coffee. To get to the cafe you have to walk up a seedy stair case, the entrance is unassuming, is nothing more than a small alley in between shop fronts and its not the most modern looking cafe but its worth it.

The train track in Hanoi is blocked. So the coffee shop owners there usually try to take customers to go to their shops to have a drink and watch the train. That's their style of business operation. That's how people do business on that train track since the train track was blocked. A lot of vloggers are willing to buy a drink and let the shop owners take them to their shops for a drink so they can film. They are not technically scamming you per se. Since you didn't want to stay in their shop and you looked upset so they escorted you out. It's their business so they have the right to take you back out if you don't want to buy goods in their shop. People are just trying to make a living. Vietnam is not the West and things are super cheap and people don't pay tax and get handouts from the government like in the West. So just be mindful and open minded if things is not going your way.

From my understanding, a Korean tourist did something silly last year and got hurt. They closed down train street, so the only way to get on is if you go there with a vendor (that's why you have the aggressive vendor trying to drag on you in as their business was hurt by that incident). During the day, you'll see the policemen manning the barrier and I think they let the vendors take people in, but others loitering around waiting for the train to come cannot just hang out...I guess it makes it safer in a way with less of a crowd there. Someone said there's actually 2 train streets and you can go to the other one. It's unfortunate that one tourist ruined it for everyone else because before that, train street videos were always so fun when they are lined with people as the train goes by. One vendor told a vlogger to put their phone on the tracks and record, which gave it a different perspective as train went by.

I have a theory that the franchise business model have killed the unique food, the unique characteristics of eateries here in the West. Not many ! The locals know the schedule of the train. They can avoid any accident. The tourists use their eyes to follow the locals. Get it ?

I think it depends on what you like. If you like big and shiny, then HCMC/Saigon. If you prefer a bit more traditional and charming, then Hanoi. Check out videos from "Ellis WR" in Hanoi as I really enjoyed them...but he's more about trying different foods and stuff around the city. And if food is your thing, then I highly recommend doing a food tour like MomDuty or "Flora and Note" did in Hanoi. "Chase and Shelbs" had a great food tour in HCMC as did "Steph and Pete" in Hoi An.
