As soon as you picked up the "weird power connector" I felt old af. PS/2 port was used for mice and keyboards back in the day... I'm only 33 at the time of writing this...
I've just bought my first NAS (Synology DS423+) to replace a Drobo that won't work wih the latest Mac OS. I could not have set this up without your video. Thank you. It was excellent.
That was so so nice to read!!! It really made all the hard work worth it!! Thank you.🙏 If you feel it’s worth a coffee… I’m not saying no 😉👍: geni.us/buymeacoffe
Great video by MK! Robin if I can trouble you with a quick question- I am assuming I need to buy an Ethernet cable separately and what about the power cable - does that come with synology setup.
Thank you for keeping this as easy to follow as possible. Too many other vodeos dont stop to explain deatils like the raid thing and so forth. This video also answers a question ive been asking: using one NAS device to back up my laptop AND as storage for lots of files and media. I do have one question for you. When selecting which SSD type Hard drives, are there any suggestions you can give me to help? Any features i should look out for? With so many to pick from it can be overwhelming.
Thank you for this tutorial. I have two Drobos that died within a month of each other and I just found out they are now out of business. I now am about to set up my new Synology DS923+.
awesome man im planning on getting one of these i just ordered mine on newegg thanks to your video on clear instructions to set it up you just gained a sub bro thanks!
Thank you for such a detailed walkthrough of the set up process and explaining about each step. I was following along with your video while setting this up and it was super helpful.
Excellent content! I just have few questions and hopefully you can answer it since I'm new in this DIY local storage build. 1. Is it really necessary to connect it physically through a LAN network or will it work home wifi connection? 2. Is it safe to run this unit 24/7?
Hi Judy, nice to have you around. 1. It doesn’t have a wireless interface so you would need to connect the cable to for example a router to bring it to your wireless network. 2. Yes it’s built to run 24/7.
I’m so happy my video provided value! But… was it valuable enough to be worth a cup of coffee!?: geni.us/buymeacoffe ☕️😁 Either way I’m very happy my video was usueful! 😃👍
Then you can basically just move your disks to a new NAS that is compatible with the DSM version you have on the broken one. But, remember to have an off site backup of all your important data :)
Hello, thank you foe the helpful video. I followed all your tutorial and now my NAS is up and running. But I have a problem, when I access as clients it's running very slow. Is there anything that I do wrong? Thank you so much for your help!
Thank you so much. It has worked well for me in my network to work with 4K files. If you find my work to be worth a cup of coffee or maybe even two… here is the link: geni.us/buymeacoffe 😘☕️ Thanks again for watching! 😃👍
Hi, @MK What’s the maximum storage capacity for a single hard drive and the maximum capacity using all 4 bays? I’m planning on using it to store media content only.
I have a question. Am I able to set this device up through usb and use it through usb only? I dont need the network connection just usb directly to my computer.
How do you connect though with a wired Ethernet connection and not a wifi connection via a router? Lots of videos explain setup wireless but it’s a very slow connection method and doesn’t allow for the 1GB connection speeds. Is it as simple as getting an Ethernet cable and plugging that into the router and into the computer?
You should be able to plug your router into the NAS and then a cable from your computer to the router 👍 Just make sure you use fast enough ports on your router.
@@MK-Creator Thanks for your reply. How do you go about finding out how fast the router is? I assume most of the mainstream ones are only 1GB connections? How do you allow for the 10GB connection speeds, is a switch mandatory or can I buy a faster router?
hi ;) I am supposed to use it with a Macbook Pro M1, can I do everything as it is via web DSM right? The initial setup I believe is the same as under Windows . Thanks
I have a 2 disk synology NAS setup on RAID 1. Is there a way to mirror specific folders from 1st drive to the 2nd drive instead of the entire 1st drive?
Would getting a nas be worth it? I will be taking the i7 7700 and 16gb ram from a different pc and reusing it in a nas. I would use it for cloud storage (because google photos and iCloud sucks) and prob a small mc server.
Hey! Is there a way to get these drives to show up on finder in a macbook. I have formatted to exfat so theoretically it should show up on my macbook, but they only show up on my PC laptop - any help would be appreciated. Thanks
The point of a NAS is so you have access to your storage via your network / internet. In your situation, you’d be better off using a regular external hard drive instead of spending a bunch of money on a NAS
what if i have 2 hard drive but its only reading 1 of them ? i dont knot what to do @MK i just bought the system and 2x (16tb seagate iron wolf pro ) all brand new

Thanks for sharing. I would actually argue that it actually depends… as I tried to explain, different RAID do the file “placements” very different. If you do use a RAID that places the same file on more than one drive is actually a kind of backup of the other. That’s why you use a RAID so you don’t lose the data if one (or possible more) drive-s fail… But I would always recommend an off-site backup to be safe and to have a real backup.
As soon as you picked up the "weird power connector" I felt old af. PS/2 port was used for mice and keyboards back in the day... I'm only 33 at the time of writing this...
That's not a PS/2 port - it's a DIN power connector, which is along the same lines as a PS/2 port, but a different shape and carries power not data
Lmao as a fellow 90s kid I concurr 🤣
@MK you have almost done it like a pro tutorial...it helped a lot.
