I have owned my Synology NAS for almost 4 years and was scared to death to do anything on it, until now. I believe you had not started this yet or I did not find you on youtube. I am also happy the versions are easier to understand but I still missed so much on my initial setup 4 years ago. I watched this excellent setup video and corrrected everything I missed 4 years ago and now feel much more comfortable that I can take this on. I am now following your channel Will. I will start watching your list of basic things to do and try not to be intimidated by a piece of hardware and menu selections. One thing for sure I will try to watch your videos first and foremost.
You have made an extremely clear walk though how to set up a NAS, I wouldn't have made it with out your clear explanations to every singel step. You have great pedagogical skills.
First off, I really love your shirts! I can't thank you enough for all your videos and the information you share. Your delivery is spot on-friendly and easy to understand. My wife always says you remember people by how they make you feel, and you, sir, are very kind and approachable. You have a great gift, and I appreciate you sharing it with the world. Thank you!
You Sir are an absolute hero. I bought a Synology DS223J on the strength of your review and have now spent the last three hours setting it up with the help of your excellent video. I honestly wouldn't have had a clue where to start but not only do you take it step by step but you explain why it should be done in a certain way and what the alternatives are. I hope someone from Synology puts you on the payroll, or links your channel in their FAQ's. It's a niche subject and you deserve more subscribers, but for those who are needing the information I doubt there is a better contributor. Your tutorials are clear, concise and superbly produced and am most grateful for the time you have taken to put this information together. I salute you!
Normally I don't post on TH-cam videos, but because of you, I bought a DS1821+ (my first NAS) with three 20TB Seagate Iron Wolf Pros and just now set it up by following your video. Thanks for the information! I can't wait to learn more about what it can do.
Will, I’m with redmadjr your videos take something intimidating and break it down and make it manageable and understandable. I’m a retired USAF flyer who is now crossing over into Cyber and to help my understanding I’ve been building my home network. It came time for a NAS and I had no idea what questions to even ask. I made the decision to go with Synology primarily because of your recommendation. Your videos provide great guidance and you’ve got a great way of making the viewer comfortable at the same time. You’ve got a subscriber and I will definitely be watching your channel to my bring my knowledge level up. Thank you!
Outstanding tutorial! I just recently purchased my first NAS (DS223) and, despite being a career software QA guy, didn't know how much I didn't know about network storage until I installed my own! Your videos are perfectly paced, thorough, easy to understand for viewers of all tech levels, and helpful beyond expectations. Excellent production quality, great sound quality, and excellent content. Thanks for the time and effort you put into creating and publishing your videos. I'm a subscriber so keep up the great work and thanks again!
I was about to post some similar posts but the above are fully illustrating my thoughts! Thank you @SpaceRex for such a nice and step-by-step guide, much appreciated and subscribed for more :).
WOW. Incredibly helpful. Thanks Will for the super in-depth, yet approachable walkthrough. My synology comes tomorrow and I feel prepped to get it all setup.
Hi, I bought a DS223 along with two 4TB HDDs and had fitted the hardware together before I looked for help on TH-cam. To my horror, I discovered that my modem/router doesn't have a spare LAN port but another TH-cam channel has introduced me to a "switch" (TP-Link LiteWave 5-Port Gigabit switch) that I've ordered from Amazon. I'm so pleased to have found your guide as setting-up the software is far from straight-forward (for me). I had to abandon set-up at about the "two factor" section and would like not only to pick-up where I left off but also amend some of the stages beforehand when possible. I'm a home user but will be overseas for two months from mid-May. During my absence, I'd like to have remote access to files and photos, so, hopefully the NAS will be good for that. So, I'll look at your other videos as you suggest. Thank you for a set-up video for real beginners. 73, Ian
Thank you so much Will. This was my first time ever attempting a setup of a NAS. I just got my Synology DS223 yesterday and I was glad to see your video recommendation a few days ago on TH-cam. You touched on every important aspect for beginners and we all appreciate it.
Thank you for the intro to Synology NAS. TH-cam recommended your channel, and this is one of the times the algorithm recommended a very useful channel. I've been pondering what to do to replace my old TimeCapsule, which though the drive works, the software and security have not been updated for years. I'm in the process of changing to a Synology Wifi and now with your videos I feel comfortable adding and configuring a Synology NAS.
Man, thank you so much for doing this! I didn't do enough research when I bought my first NAS (DS220+) and expected it to be just plug and play, like my WD My Cloud that it is replacing. As someone with no experience, I was overwhelmed and lost. This tutorial helped immensely; it was thorough and easily understood. I look forward to watching the rest of your videos.
I bought the Synology 923+ and bought 4 SeaGate Iron Wolf pro 4TB each and followed your video line by line and I thank you so very much for being so detailed with each step. I have my NAS up and running. Again thank you!
Found many guides on NAS, but your videos are by far my favorite. Very concise and clear, it makes me feel very confident diving into getting my own as a beginner. Thank you!!
I just have to say thank you. i have my new nas coming today and have never set one up so i took note from you to set it up much easier than it would have been by myself.
Many thx for all of your Synology vids. Very well done! While I am a retired, 30 yr computer vet, my past NAS was a WD MyCloud, which served me well in its vanilla-way. However. my new DS224+ is a real NAS and I'm finding I have to do my homework to fully understand. I have 6 more of your vids to review. U Da MAN!!
I must say, this is the best video I watched for complete beginners to NAS. I bought a four-bay Synology NAS back in 2016 with two 3 TB HDDs. It is new and had been sitting in my loft BOXED UP, along with the new 2 x 3TB HDD, for the last 8 years as I didn't have the time to set up the system. To make a long story short, I've just remembered that I have a NAS disk station that I never used even though I am currently struggling with storage very bad. I know, I know; it is CRAZY that I have such a beautiful box in my possession that I made no use of for the last 8 years!! Your video has been right to the point - coherent and excellent use of well-graded language. You really made exploring my NAS box more enjoyable and less daunting. Thank you so much for this beautifully documented tutorial - absolutely top-notch!
Not been into NAS before this video but I have a few use cases which let me to think about finally checking on a NAS solution for my home. I really, REALLY like your video. You're providing excellent important and convenient conifguration here. You can clearly see that you have a lot of real life experience that went into your decisions to configure these few steps after the first setup. Brilliant. This saved me a lot of time and therefore I left you this much deserved "like" on the video. Thank you
Dude, thank you so much for all of your videos. Just finished setting up my first NAS and I couldn't have done it without your guides. From all the hardware options to network and security configurations, I was able to figure out the best setup for now and can easily scale up if needed. Thank you!!
Will - just wanted to sincerely thank you for ALL your videos. Just finished inching through this one and it was life saving!!! 🙏Going through the rest of your beginner ones now😊
You’re a life saver! 🙏 I was feeling really overwhelmed and didn’t know where to even start but then I came across your video and was able to set it up without any issues. I appreciate your help a lot.
Great video! Have been a proud owner of a DS920+ for a couple of years now, and I did picked up several things from your video that I didn't know about. Like very much the style, pace and quality of your videos.
Will, thank you so much for this video. It's helped me so much in getting my NAS up and running, with the confidence it's set up correctly. I can't stress enough how helpful your videos are, you're a really valuable human being and I wish you all the success and happiness that you deserve.
Thank you for this straightforward, detailed, and reassuring video. While a techy-kind of guy, I never needed a NAS until recently, and this gave me some confidence and understanding I was lacking in. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this video! As a newcomer you saved me a lot of research to set up a NAS. Now it is just running and I can start to put my files on it, knowing I didn't mess it up.
Thank you so much for putting this out there. My Drobos needed some bits replaced (photographer/designer), but the company crashed. I settled on Synology. STEEP learning curve and NO straightforward guide. Then I found you :) Cannot say thank you enough! Sadly I was setting it up and watching your video at the same time. My connection timed out, locking me out while OTP setup was still not working either. I know. Not smart, but these things are not what I'm good at... Everyone: Don't do that! Watch the video first. Then set up the NAS. Do screengrabs of the various setups for quicker reference or make notes and be sure to tick 'keep me logged in' when you start your setup :)
Just want to hank you for making such informative videos! I love how you are always straight to the point and always underline very important issues. Very helpful stuff! 🙏🏻
I just wanted to extend my thanks, with this guide I was able to go through the set up of my NAS following along step by step. The only thing I did not see is the drive check, I'm assuming because I'm using WD drives, other than that it was simple to set up. Many thanks!
thank you for keeping this simple, I was watching a different channel earlier, and mid way thru the person lost me. Hell, it was 2.5 hours long, -- and after watching it, I didnt even know how to sign into my NAS, Your channel was under an hour, and i'm logged in, and charging forward.
Adding this comment for the future in case anyone else encounters this issue. After creating the storage pool & volume, my Control Panel on the NAS was frozen. I did some googling and found that I needed to clear my cache. Note that I am a Mac user running OS Ventura and using Safari. I was able to clear my cache and that seemed to fix the issue. Odd bug, but glad it had a simple fix.
I cannot thank you enough for this video, and your other videos! I set up a couple of older Synology NASs last year and was soooooo confused during the process. And I am a technically very sophisticated person, first took programming in 1971! This was exactly what I needed. If I ever need more specific services I will certainly tap you for consulting.
Thanks so much. I normally consider myself an "advanced user", but this is my first NAS and it's a good thing I didn't plunge in alone because I know nothing! This video has proven to be invaluable and we just scratched the surface! I can't imagine what a storage admin in an enterprise has to know, though it seems that there is a lot of crossover with what an MS systems engineer deals with. Thanks again, Will - I will be viewing a lot of your other stuff as well.
It’s a good thing I found this video. I have an old Mac Pro that has a 3-drive RAID 5 volume in it. The computer is a bit too long in the tooth and I’m going to replace it with a Mac Studio and a NAS. I did not know that I would have to format the drives, I was hoping to just plug them in. Now I have to figure out how I’m back all that data up first. Thanks for the great video, now on to watch some more on your channel.
Thanks Rex. I first saw your stuff and learned a lot and appreciated it. Then months down the road i had a project and I came back to these and they were even more of a help. Thanks for putting out so much content, it has helped
Awesome video! You’re an amazing person, with great kindness and a passion to help people! If more people had your heart this world would be a better place, keep up the AMAZING work sir!!!
I so badly wish you also did videos like this for QNAP systems. So thorough! I wish I had this kind of education prior to setting our QNAP NAS up rather than trial by error. Keep up the great work!
What a fantastic clear and concise video. I have been using my synology ds213j for years but i have not really used it to its full potential. Will most definitly look at your other videos
Thank you very much! Informative, helpful and nicely done. Given the quality of this video, I am confident your other videos will be just as outstanding as this one.
Super helpful. My new DS923+ and drives will arrive in about a week and this really helps me get my head around the basics of setting up my 1st NAS. I will be watching at least some of the suggested videos at the end. I have a couple samsung nvme drives Im thinking of using with the NAS and wonder if you have a video that addresses that option. Subed
Another great video, especially for beginners. Nothing new for me after watching all your other great videos. However, I always enjoy your productions. Regarding “Power Schedule”, I use this for my remote backup NAS. My first NAS, was a DS220J which was useless for anything but backup and simple storage. So now I just schedule it to power up each night, back up my DS220+,then shut down thus minimising wear and tear, potential for attack, etc.
Hi SpaceRex, that's really excellent tutorial and I am very glad you share it with public. Thank you so much! It reminds me the old good days when the software packages were accompanied by Wizzards and Tutorials useful for users whu did not hav a clue about the software. This is the updated stuff though, meaning "it reflects the IT developement in the menatime".
Very important thing: When you're selecting your username, don't use any special characters, for example i have "á" as part of my name. Login with this letter works when signing in through quickconnect, but not when trying to use smb to access your drive. I had no idea why the password didn't work and changed it so many times that I completely locked myself out of the entire thing and had to use the reset button. Then I found out if I write my username without that special symbol, now it works everywhere. Crazy in 2024.
I just received my 923+ but was reluctant to even open it to due to its complexity. This video is proving to be hugely helpful and give confidence about this purchase! Question for you: my main purpose of getting Synology is to store/access my huge library of RAW + JPG image files as a photographer. The appeal of the NAS was also to access photos from anywhere in the world since I travel for work a lot. Currently I have 12TB's worth of photos on a G-DRIVE external HD which desperately needs to be backed up (and expand). I purchased 3x IronWolf Pro 12TB drives and I'm not sure if I should set it up as SHR or RAID 5? I bought the 3rd drive with the intention of doing RAID 5 however seeing SHR as an option I could return the 3rd drive to save some money as I likely will be ok with 24TB for now. Once the NAS is all setup I plan to backup everything onto Backblaze and/or those old HDD's. All that being said, in my case what do you recommend?
Thank you for taking the time to make such a great video. One thing I didn't understand was the scheduler for SMART test where you can set it say monthly but under there is also hourly section where you can set it few hours apart. (default: everyday) Not quite sure what that mean and it doesn't make much sense to me to set a 2 day job (extended test) once every few hours or so.
I have owned my Synology NAS for almost 4 years and was scared to death to do anything on it, until now. I believe you had not started this yet or I did not find you on youtube. Thanks so much for this video. Exactly what I was looking for. My 1522+ is now working!
Thanks. I'm brand new to NAS. This guide was easy to follow and very informative. You are providing a valuable service to Synology NAS owners.
Thanks for these extremely clear walktroughs. It really helped me setting up my NAS.
Just want to hank you for making such informative videos! I love how you are always straight to the point and always underline very important issues.
Very helpful stuff! 🙏🏻
This video was absolutely critical for setting up my first NAS. Thanks for doing this!
First time synology user had been wanting to try a NAS for a while. Just got a DS220+ on sale, great starter video and very easy to follow!

Thanks for your videos! I've watched dozens, they've helped me through the buying process and setup so far.
I followed step by step and it works!!! I got SD224+ but IronWolf Pro 8T is not recognised (Strange). Thank You for the clear instruction.
I so badly wish you also did videos like this for QNAP systems. So thorough!
I wish I had this kind of education prior to setting our QNAP NAS up rather than trial by error.
Keep up the great work!
Thanks Man! Your complete guide on how to setup my new DS923+ was awesome. Thank you for all your help. Regards from Uruguay!
Thank you Space Rex for the video, its very easy to understand, and you are very informative as well. A really good teacher!

Nice! Once a day should not be a big deal with the drives. Only thing to make sure is that the hyperbackup actually can complete in that time!
Man. I trust this guy more than any other guy out here.
This is very detilaed explanation and I successfully set my NAS up with your guide. Thank you so much!
Very good beginner's setup guide. Helped me get my first NAS up and running. Great tutorials dude.

Really high quality guide WIll. Easy to follow and clearly explained. A big thanks 🙂

Thank you so much for this. Setting up my first NAS
Excellent video which was easy to follow and very self explanatory.
Mate this is the best step by step video, thanks for making this :)
Awesome video, thanks for sharing your knowledge 👍
Many many thanks for your video's. And especially for the tip to use Exos drives.
*Hey, I'm curious -- wouldn't setting Snapshot Replication to every 2 hours negate the 3 hour HDD hibernation? Meaning the HDDs would never sleep?*
I don't know this for a fact, but I'm assuming that if there is no changes, the snapshot just doesn't happen.
Awesome guide, easy to understand and very well explained, thank you sir, God bless you!!!
Thank you for this video. It was immensely helpful.
Great video, keep up the good work, I'm setting up my NAS, Thanks for your Help.
All that being said, in my case what do you recommend?
just checking in, what did you end up deciding?
Thorough & simple. Thanks Will!
Fantastic content quality. Good job!
Super helpful video, just set mine up right along with you. Thanks!
Thank you for this, This was the video I was looking for.
Thanks! Super Helpful! Ended up going the Synology route vs DIY.
A note, setting static IP would be helpful here too.
Thanks again!
Just bought my first NAS and just found your videos - awesome work!!! Followed along and now it's time to check out your Photos video - Thanks Will
