    I just got a new Synology NAS after using my own frankenstein storage solutions for the past decade or so. I appreciate all the tutorials, without them I would have been pretty lost trying to set up the things I was trying to do.

    I Agree with you on Synology photos 1000%, it needs work. I've been leaving feedback on it for one option. That is, to add an indicator in personal space that lets you know if a photo is or is not included in an album!!!

    Hi Frank, another great video to help users get the most from their Synology. Personally my favourite app is Surveillance Station. I used to have a stand alone DVR and when I purchased my NAS was blown away by how powerful the Surveillance Station software is. Many thanks.

      I agree. SS is the bomb, but only for two devices. $60 a license is ridiculous.

    • @fritzsmith7794
      @fritzsmith7794 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      SS is feature packed but running 5 cameras on a 218Play and doing a media server (Emby) was just too taxing for it. It would cause my media server to crawl even though i didn't use it to transcode video. Went to a dedicated i7 PC running Blue Iris. Not completely satisfied with that either but it works running 9 cameras. Maybe if I had a much faster Synology it might handle more concurrent tasks. Thanks to this channel for tons of good content.

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As far as I know, the NAS itself doesn't have any real capabilities like that - you're really just storing the data on the NAS and can use whatever client application you'd like for stuff like that.

    Nice video! I use most of the applications you mentioned. I'm just getting started with Photos. If I were to use it for backing up photos from my mobile device, I assume I would then exclude this from the sync when using Synology Drive? I obviously don't want to have 2 instances of all my photos on the NAS. I just want to make sure I would be setting this up correctly though.

    Hi, Great video! You say the cloud sync app is not a ideal for cloud backup (as its a syn tool).... so in your opinion what is the best way to backup cloud files onto the Synology NAS? Thanks.

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! If your goal is to back up cloud files to your NAS and you configure snapshots on the NAS, it's definitely not the worst option. I generally dislike the other way - syncing data from the NAS to a cloud storage location and using it as a "backup".

  • @hellblast911
    @hellblast911 ปีที่แล้ว

    Howdy! Re: Synology Photos: Do the settings have the fidelity to discriminate which Wi-Fi network the sync is allowed from? In other words can I upload cellphone photos automatically when connected to my home wi-fi but not when connected to a hotel WiFi for example (or tie up an AirBNB WiFi network when five people do this at the same time)?

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Short answer, unless you have a route back to your NAS (using QuickConnect, port forwarding, etc), you won't be able to access it. If you are using one of those, you'll have to modify the settings in Photos but those are the only real options available.

    If I use ABP as my main backup method, should I still consider using Snapshot Replication? They seem somewhat duplicative. I also use HB to an external USB Hard Drive and C2 (once a month). I think I have the 3-2-1 method covered. Thanks

    • @WunderTechTutorials

      Snapshots are a very powerful tool and can produce extremely fast recoveries while taking very little space so I'd personally use them but it's up to you.

      Side question : If one day my synology nas dies , how can I restore my hyperbackup to a newer nas ? I guess I start from scratch and then I use the hyperbackup explorer right ? But since you can backup your apps configuration inside your hyperbackup , how do you do that :) Do you have a video on that subject ? Thanks !

      @@sylvainalain6637 I normally use FAT32, but there's really no right or wrong answer. Use whichever offers the most compatibility for you!
      Yes, you'll hook the hard drive to the new NAS, open Hyper Backup and then restore from it. It's the "restoring data" section of this article, but you'll need to re-link the external hard drive first.

      They are both awesome - I love Synology Drive, but Nextcloud does more than Drive does. If you only want file syncing, I think Drive is a great option. If you're planning on using some of the other Nextcloud features, you can't go wrong with it.

    For the Mac, what is the difference in using active backup for business and Time machine? Which is better and why?

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The short answer is that if you're only backing up one machine, Time Machine is fine. When you start backing up multiple devices, the benefit is in the centralized management that Active Backup for Business offers.

    Is sharing data with synology over the web HIPPA compliant. ? The data has to be encrypted while at rest and during transport. ? Do you set up open vpn servers locally ?

    • @WunderTechTutorials

      I am unfortunately not in a position to speak on HIPAA compliance. I would contact Synology directly.

    • @kend4438
      @kend4438 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure of all HIPPA requirement but the Synology operating system certainly allows encrypted volumes, so that data can be encrypted at rest. Both Hyperback and Active Backup for Business, as well as Drive, can be set to use encrypted transmission. Additionally, you can easily access files remotely as well via a VPN back to your Synology DS.

    • @ickyendeavors4179
      @ickyendeavors4179 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To be honest,, the Synology Surveillance Station is interesting, except for the fact that the cost per camera drives it up, vs. just grabbing a HikVision NVR for cameras as example; you can grab one of those for $130 at NewEgg and they are perfect up to 16 cameras, no ongoing license. Doing licensing at Synology Surveillence licensing is WAY more than that, and renewal cost..

      The snapshots are taken at the volume level and can be restored/completed very quickly. I like to look at it like the first line of defense: restore from the snapshot if you can - if you can't, go to HB.

    So upset that the Active Backup for Business won't run on my non BTRFS capable DS218play. Guess my 218play is not 'business' enough! I don't need the across clients syncing abilities or complications of running Synology Drive and I don't have space for full C:\ backups. I assume many will opt for a third party backup client.

    Hello, is there any NAS model that can automatically upload photos? When we take photos on our phone, even if we are not in the app, it will upload them for us. I want that model because from what I have heard, it seems like B-Station does not upload them automatically.

    I getting close to extremely high SSD utilization on a win 11 system. I've copied a brive then restored that drive copy after the drive upgrade using a USB set as bootable with the C drive copy on it.
    The question: Can I create a copy of the drive using "Active Business Back-up", boot from a USB and through that navigate to the copy on the Synologh NAS?

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm not exactly sure if I understand the requirements, but you can only restore from an Active Backup for Business backup task, so theoretically, if it was created with ABB, you should be able to restore. I'm just not sure when it comes to external drives.

      @@WunderTechTutorials I have just under 10 gig available on a 256 gig SSD. So, I'm going to replace the SSD with a 512 which should satisfy the need for some time.

    If you use Hyper Backup to backup to the cloud, say Google Drive, will files that you've deleted on the NAS that you're backing up also automatically be deleted from the cloud backup, or do they just keep accumulating? I often delete files on my NAS, and if I ever have to restore, I don't want all those files I've deleted to then be restored.

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They will be retained based on the retention settings. If you're saving 3 versions for example, you'll retain the files until the versions have been rotated. This is necessary for the backups to function properly (in case the data is deleted accidentally, ransomeware, etc). However, after X amount of new backups, the data will be removed.

    Don't know if anyone can help me, my Synology NAS DS920+ won't allow me to copy files from the nas to my laptop, it starts then just stops a few seconds later, any help appreciated

      How are you trying to handle the copy? Are you connecting from the laptop?

      @@WunderTechTutorials Sorry for late reply, I didn't receive notification that you had. I know what was causing the issue, I'm using Nord VPN, after I connect to do my online banking then disconnect, if a few hours later I went to take a file off my NAS it wouldn't allow me, there is something from the VPN which is stopping me. Once the pc is rebooted it all works

      @@robertleem5643 NordVPN is a full-tunnel VPN, so you won't be able to access local services with it. I think you might be able to configure it to allow that, but I'm not positive.

    The only problem I have with active backup for business is that you need to have a Synology account and link your NAS to Synology which is a bit annoying.

      I don't think that is correct. I use it on my home network and at least one of the machines has no Synology account. If I'm wrong, I'd love to know.

      @@DavidM2002 I just did retry it. I am running DS220+ with up to date firmware. When you start the Active backup for busniss 1st time it asks you to log in into your synology account.

      Are you talking about a "Synology account" that exists on your local Synology server? Or is it mandatory to log into a Synology account that only exists on a Synology server accessible only via the Internet? If the later, then this backup software would be completely useless on a LAN that has no Internet access.

    I could have sworn you did a video about this but when you look at one brand on TH-cam for a while it all blends together.

    Synology Drive just sucks... Doesn't allow me to upload and delete files after. Also when you move files through LAN it slows everything down because it starts indexing weighing everything down.

    Goog video, although in my opinion I would not have a lightsource like the pc monitor in the background. It is kind of disturbing for me as a viewer and catches too much attention away from the protagonist.
