    Luke's black outfit that he wears in this movie is low-key the best fit in all of Star Wars. It's pretty subtle, but next time you watch the movie, pay attention to it and just admire how stylish he is.

    The one thing I'll say in defense about the scene with Luke and Darth Vader on the bridge is that if they wanted to fight each other, they would have fought each other. I actually think that's one of the best moments in the movie. They gave the two characters a chance to actually breathe. I also think it was important for the Ark of Darth Vader that he didn't want the fight luke. You can feel that torment as he tries to suppress the good side creeping back in when faced with his son who is purposefully speaking calmly and gently to him, man to man. I think it's a good scene. It makes the fight scene later a bit more powerful because you know Vader doesn't want to do it.

    People complaining about bobas death baffle me. He was never really established to be some amazing cool guy at this point. He was just another random bounty hunter that people latched on to cause they thought his armour was cool. Since then we've got more stuff from the EU and shit. At the time boba was a nothing character. George himself has said he was just another minion. His death was kinda comical, so? Star wars fans really like 2 movies and think they love the franchise. Everyone's entitled to their opinion but nitpicks like bobas death are frustrating.

    • @jaketerpening3284
      @jaketerpening3284 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Okay, he was the one who tracked Han to Bespin. He was clearly not just a random character who had cool armor, he had skills above the other bounty hunters. He was also the only one who slowed Luke down at all on his rampage in the same movie. Top it all off with Star Wars fans being really into every minor character, and it's not surprising people were upset about his comedic death.

    • @patricknaughton6636
      @patricknaughton6636 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      People like to say it's because of the armor but the bigger draw with boba fett is that he's the only henchman that threatens the main characters. He tracks the falcon down, captures han solo, and would've probably blasted luke in the hallway if he wasn't trying to lead him to vader (who up to that point personally killed no one that was actually fighting back). He's clearly more dangerous than the stormtroopers, and his death in jedi makes fans upset because any generic goon could have taken his place and it would've changed nothing.
      A good example of how he should've worked is karl in die hard (spoilers if you haven't seen die hard, which you should). He acts differently than the rest of the goons, has a bigger gun, and nearly kills mcclane many times while the other goons get shot to bits. It takes a long brawl scene where he's thashing bruce willis for most of it to ALMOST kill him, and even then he outlives the rest of the bad guys and is killed by another character to resolve his character arc.

      2. Extras - Finding 100+ people that are 7ft tall (Chewbacca's height approx.) is not that easy either.
      I personally think wookiees would have been better, but personally I don't tend to mind a whole lot, considering there are meant to be thousands of them and they did capture the main cast at some point and they don't just serve as eye candy considering we see quite a few of them die.

    Leia using the grenade was to show Jabba that, not only is her motivation for collecting a bounty, but to also solidify herself as a legitimate character of the underworld, by using a fierce negotiating tactic. Of COURSE if the grenade is set off, no one wins, but that's not the point. The point is to sacrifice a few teammates in order for everyone to escape together. It's impossible to rescue only one, so the plan was to fully infiltrate their criminal enterprise and rely on R2 being able to fire out Luke's lightsaber to him at the right time.
    Of course, this requires a lot of things to line up perfectly for Luke (which I'm not a fan of), but that is the point of the entire setup. It makes sense, but you have to exit your current state as a "TH-cam critic" and think from different perspectives.
    Also, not telling C3PO about the plan was a GOOD thing. C3PO is a blabbermouth. He can't keep secrets. He'd most likely give away the plan, which is why it was the safer risk to put him in that situation with R2 without knowing anything.

      Keep in mind that Jabba and his people had to sit silently in the dark for, what, 7 hours? waiting for Leia to show up to free solo - of which they had no idea she was Leia or that her objective was to release Han or when she would do it.
      There's your different perspective lol, it's an incredibly idiotic scene.

This was intentional to draw the Rebels in to Palpatine's trap, they would have been too suspicious if there was a sizeable imperial presence in the system. This is literally mentioned in the film. So yeah, the Empire was WAY more powerful than the Rebels, Palpatine was just a fool who got overconfident and too trusting of vague visions - the Rebels were never supposed to be able to get the shield generator down and would have easily lost if that were the case.

    I was 11 when it came out (like many others, I see!). I remember loving the experience, feeling like it was going by too quickly, wanting to savor every moment. But as we waited outside for my parents to pick us up and the crowd surrounding me was euphoric and talking about how cool it was, I felt for the first time in my life a distinct gap between what I was feeling and what they were expressing. It was disappointment, but it would take a long time for me to acknowledge it. Meanwhile, I bought the toys, books, tapes, and posters. There was enough to love about Return of the Jedi to forget that initial feeling and just keep on being a Star Wars fan.
    Then it came. I was in college when the February 1997 issue of Sci-Fi Universe magazine hit the stands. In big bold letters, the cover read, "FIFTY REASONS WHY WE HATE RETURN OF THE JEDI (and love Star Wars...). Reading it was cathartic. It was clever, genuine, and funny writing, obviously posited by people who really loved the franchise. My buddy and I would take turns reading it aloud to each other like a performance, it was so good. There was a side bar about all the ways Jedi was amazing, too.
    You hit a lot of the points covered in the essay, and I appreciated the deeper look and personal perspectives brought with this video. Clear, funny, informative, and - again - with an obvious love of Star Wars.
    Fun Asides:
    When the Special Edition came out, it was a thrill to see the ANH in the theater again. I relished watching the younger audience that was talking and joking through Empire get completely sucked into it and shut the F up. By the time Han got frozen, the entire theater was silent and learning into the screen, dumbfounded by how good it was. The same full audience laughed a lot through Return of the Jedi. The biggest unintentional laugh came when Vader said, "My son is with them. I have FELT him." I hadn't realized how suggestive that line was, but boy did the audience roar form it.

      Han Solo just wasn’t given much to do in the film. His one thing that he does is blow up a control station. In the first two films he was such a vital character and although Luke was the main hero, he couldn’t have done it without Han.

    I always thought Luke's plan did fail: he really did give up the droids -- maybe he planned on rescuing them after bargaining with Jabba. So then he sent Leia in, and she got captured. So then he went in to fix stuff. I didn't get that he had planned on the skiff fight scene, only that he and his pals knew generally what they'd need to do. I never thought his plan was what we saw. Instead, we saw a bunch of plans failing. First plan was to bargain with Jabba.

    • @Suddmoney
      @Suddmoney 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      That was my understanding as well. The plan was to bargain with Jabba. If that failed, send Leia and Chewie to infiltrate and try to sneak Han out. If THAT failed, Luke would go in himself. But he knew if that didn’t work, he needed R2 and Lando to be there (which is why Lando was undercover as one of Jabba’s guards) to help fight them out.

    • @johnnygyro2295
      @johnnygyro2295 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      In hindsight, the plan could've been streamlined as such:
      Step 1: Have Lando infiltrate Jabba's guards to confirm Han is at the palace.
      Step 2: Have Leia, disguised as a bounty hunter, "capture" Chewbacca and C-3PO. The latter would serve as a translator for Leia.
      Step 3: After Jabba's party, Leia would thaw Han from the carbonite, Lando get Chewie from his cell and they all leave.
      Step 4: On the off chance step 3 fails, which it does, Luke comes himself with R2 and demands Jabba surrenders. When he refuses then you get the fight at Jabba's Palace with Luke distracting everyone by fighting the Rancor. R2 breaks Leia's chains, she kills Jabba and everyone bails since she also activates the Thermal Detonator to blow up the palace.
      Side notes: This would, for better or worse, cut the fight over the Sarlacc Pit and allow Boba to join the fight on Endor on the Empire's side, giving Han and the others more to do.

    • @7opher619
      @7opher619 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      You neglect the fact that he sent in the droids with his lightsaber stowed away in R2. That means he would have lost his lightsaber if Jaba had accepted them as offerings and would have had to retrieve it or give it up.

    • @matthewparker9276
      @matthewparker9276 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think his plan was to send in as many infiltrators as possible, and while he was negotiating (I.e. distracting) jabba, Leia would sneak Han out, and luke and co would follow them, violently if need be. Leia unfreezing han at night and the battle of the skiff then being improvisations to recover from the plan not working out.

In Legends he escaped the Sarlaac pit through use of his arsenal and Mandalorian armor and while he was captured by Jawas afterward, they mistook him for an unintelligent being and only restrained him, and the bounty hunter escaped later, in canon, he is still being digested while alive or he gave in to the pain of the Sarlaac’s neurotoxins and died, and due to that specific Sarlaac’s continued wellbeing in canon, it would be impossible for a salvage anyway. Yoda dying might be the only true moment where I actually felt true emotion in a Star Wars movie.
    I loved every moment with luke, vader, and the emperor, imo the best star wars scenes. And also how when Luke gets his lightsaber and just says fuck jedi technique and swings it a baseball bat and destroys everybody.
    For me, I lean towards the good usually outweighs the negatives if it's equal. I definitely liked this movie. It's the only one to be fun, while having a serious tone and balance it perfectly.

    • @gabrielreed1096
      @gabrielreed1096 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      10,000 Subscribers without Videos just because you don't know a character, doesn't mean that there is no emotion behind their death. Besides, order 66 was not just the fall of the Jedi, it was the fall of Anakin. You see him attack the temple--his home. He killed children. The Jedi, who symbolize hope, peace, order, abd Justice, died. The light in the dark galaxy was snuffed out. On top of John Williams brilliant score, it was probably the most emotional moment in star wars history.
      One last thing. Yoda disappeared. The last time we saw that, the guy who disappeared came back as a ghost. Everyone knew that Yoda would become one too. The Jedi in order 66 didn't. That was the sad truth of moment.
      Order 66 was far more emotional than Yoda's "death"

  • @BrianHartman

    Actually, this is probably my favorite Star Wars movie.
    Yes, the beginning setup is awkward. And yes, the Ewoks are pretty terrible (although they're not without purpose, as I discuss below).
    But you have to look at it from the perspective of someone who was watching it in 1983 and didn't know how it was going to end. The whole excitement from it is that you know that final battle between Luke and Vader is coming.
    Return of the Jedi had a lot more setup to do because of Han being captured. I don't think that was handled particularly well, but I understand why Luke wouldn't want to fight Jabba in his lair. There's no element of surprise there.
    The Ewoks aren't that annoying once you understand the reason for them being there. This was 1983, not that far removed from the Vietnam War. The Ewok battle is in there to show an indigenous people fighting against a more technologically advanced force.
    Also, there's a reason Luke doesn't go in on Vader with his light saber blazing. He doesn't *want* to kill Vader. He wants to turn him (like Rey wanted to turn Kylo). In 1983, audiences went in not knowing if Luke was going to have to kill Vader. He was being told that he had to defeat Vader by Obi Wan and Yoda, but he is also afraid to fall to the dark side. It's this central conflict that fuels the movie. Luke whaling on Vader in the beginning is him starting to be tempted by the dark side, and he just barely pulls himself back.
    The movie does, obviously, have its flaws. But what keeps it from being boring is that you know that battle is coming at the end, and the danger increases the closer Luke gets to it.

      I feel the opening of Return of the Jedi was successful, but I would make some changes to the rest of the film.
      I would change the plot from there to have Han and Leia follow a lead from Jabba’s Palace to Coruscant (kind of a WW2 French spy thriller vibe), and Han, Chewbacca, and Leia discover a method to use Spice routes to smuggle rebel troops past the Imperial fleet to storm the Imperial Palace. Blade Runner was released in 1982 so the effects were possible for Coruscant. Luke is now a symbol of hope for the galaxy, meaning he will bring the return of the jedi order and peace to the galaxy. The rebel troops inspire the Coruscantians to rise up (maybe there are Wookies that were inspired by Chewbacca, which helps turn the tide).
      Lando and a new character (maybe someone that infiltrated Jabba’s Palace with him so they have a rapport) would follow a similar path to the actual movie leading the space attack against the Imperial fleet, but the attack on the fleet is a smoke screen to distract the actual goal of sneaking in the ground troops to the surface; Lando could have subplot about convincing the rebel fleet on a suicide mission that functions as a distraction.
      Luke would similarly follow a similar path to the actual movie, but I would have had Luke be training Leia in the Force between movies (it’s clear in Empire Strikes Back that she can use The Force so why not have that training occur off screen or in an early scene…maybe Leia uses the Force during the Jabba mission). I would also not make Leia and Luke related; the scene where Luke snaps when Vader says “If you will not turn, maybe she will…” still works, especially if Leia is on the planet at the time. Luke would still confront the Emperor, but it would occur at the Imperial Palace. There would be additional tension because Luke falling to the Emperor’s side would snuff out the new hope that he has provided to the people of the galaxy.
      The rebels are successful with taking the palace and there is a celebration to the end of the civil war. Maybe Han dies so Harrison Ford can have his dream fulfilled. The end.

    The Emperor “foreseeing” things (or his failure to do so) is one of the themes of the film. Yoda in ESB preaches the folly of looking away to the future. (One of the ironic inversions in the prequels, where Yoda and the Jedi are all about prophecy and future-seeing, except for Quite-Gon- who tells Obi-Wan to cut that out.) 6-film moral: Keep your mind on what you’re doing right NOW, or you’re going to have a bad time.

It’s really a sad moment. But overall It’s a nice little arch that Yoda goes through.

But maybe you should take another look at the Ewoks. At first they wanted to eat Luke, Han, and Chewbacca. Then they helped the Rebels find the least guarded section of the shield generator. Next fight. Now during the fight they did something that was psychotic. They bludgeoned a group of Storm Troopers to death and were laughing while doing it. Later, they ate those same Storm Troopers. WHERE WERE THE BODIES TO THOSE HELMETS?! They were playing music at the end and one Ewok was using the helmets as a drum set. What happened to the bodies? The Ewoks were psychotic and they were the good guys.

    I appreciate this video, btw! It feels like many people are afraid to even critizise the original trilogy, almost viewing it like it's holy and that it's got no flaws and whoever says anything differently is shunned and disliked. Nothing has no flaws! It's good to see people express their opinions, challenging the pre-existing Star Wars norms. Though, judging by the like/dislike ratio at the time of making this comment, it's evident that not everyone feels this way.

      To me, the Empire Strikes Back, after watching Return of the Jedi, was just awkward seeing Luke and Leia kiss, not knowing they were actually brothers and sisters. So yeah, there's that.

    I agree, Han Solo is really boring in Return Of The Jedi, which was a bummer. I really liked him a lot in Empire Strikes Back. In fact, he’s my favorite character in that movie. His cockiness as the scoundrel was much more alive especially when he interacts with Leia. But in ROTJ? Yeah, he just... he was just off, really.
    I still love ROTJ though and that’s because I’m not a true Star Wars fan; I’m a die-hard Star Wars fan lol.

    I'll admit that the whole convoluted scheme MAY SEEM like some Qui-Gon level shit, but when you look at it more as a bunch of luke's plans failing rather than one big convoluted mega-plan, it makes much more sense. regardless, I liked the action from it, and while Han was much better in the other movies and he shouldn't have been in this one as much, I like that they left him alive. maybe they coulda just showed him being saved and just didn't do anything with him until the end where he's like helping with the death star a LITTLE BIT. he's a pilot. I think that he didn't need to be on Endor or really in any of the other stuff. but I like the rest of it. I like the Ewoks (not how they beat stormpoopers, that was dumb they're like mini bears) because they're cute and funny, I liked everything else, and I think Luke's story was great. when Luke and Vader meet again, it didn't need to be super exiting because Vader didn't want Luke dead. He was going easy in Empire. Luke was cuffed and weaponless (Vader took the saber and all), so they didn't fight or anything.
    So yeah. It's my favorite movie from star wars because of the Luke stuff. I think that if they had less Han, Just a little in the beginning and in the very end in the space fight part, and they made the Jabba part less confusing, it would've been perfect.
    (Also I liked how they used Lando a lot, if they had Han in it a lot less I still would've liked to see him in it just as much, 'cause I like his character.)
