    It can't be said enough. Brilliant build to save your back if you do chicks in any sort of volume! Thumbs up!

      Thank you. I wish we had been making videos when we built this. It would be a much better video.

    I like that! I can see how the door might be a problem and fixing it to slide just might be the best option. Keep up the great work and thank you for sharing!

    I found a local business Salvage yard that sells materials by weight - steel/metals, wiring, plexiglass/old signage, coated 1"x1" welded wire, etc) I had a two tier "Quail Haus" you can see on my channel videos and added a third tier top brooder with 1/4" welded wire for weeks 2-4 before they move to the grow out tiers below.
    I'm my brooder design, I sandwiched two 1/2" c channel aluminum rails on the top and bottom between a 1"×2" and cut 3/8" plexiglass sliding doors. I have a stationary 12" square in the middle (that can lift up and then out, and the two sliders on either side can slide right or left allowing 11" opening if slid to the middle (counting for a 1" overlap of the opposite door over the middle center piece) or can be completely removed if desired slide towards the side for cleaning or bulk transfer using a transfer pen/box/cage. I like this design because the plexiglass keeps the heat in better than a cage and protects from wind (I get ventilation on the hutch sides that are sheathed in wooden lathe strips.
    Now for the ingenious trick: Amazon sells Temperature Control units 4/$13 (wtc1203?)... little 1x2 black screens run on 12v with 20A relay to switch a 110v powered light/ceramic heat lamp source. I've had great success using these to set a temperature within a zone of the brooder without having to adjust the light height. My big brooder (above) has one controlling two 100w ceramic heat bulb light bar and one controlling one heater bulb element in the middle tier grow out pen should I want to move some a little early. I have two inside brooders I use for week 1, 2 than I set the temp for 95 week1, then 90 for week 2 (then outside brooder is set for 85 & 80 for week 3, 4). This turns the heat source on when it's 2-3 degrees too cool, and turns it off when it reaches temp. This cuts my electric cost in half! And I run everything off my two battery bank solar panels... even my DIY "dishwasher" 500 egg incubator and my wine cooler diy incubator/lockdown if necessary during a power outage. I have videos on those on my channel. You may also like my 25' bobwhite flightpen build I just completed... like a little quail village in the woods behind my home overlooking the Tully River!
    Try this slider door design and you won't go back to swinging cage doors!

    I have drop down doors as well but they have chains where they only drop down enough for me to do work inside. I can unhook them to drop all the way for clean out. I also put a piece of the plastic netting they sell at lowes on each end so then when I do drop the doors to access the brooder the chicks can't get out the open ends. Just an idea. Nice set up!!

    how do you like having a wood floor? How has it held up?

    • @HeirloomPermaculture
      @HeirloomPermaculture  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Held up very well. I think a couple coats of paint was key to protecting it. Plenty of shavings and ventilation too.

    I like it. I'm building cabinet style brooders soon. Everything I have is on the ground right now. I produce rare, heritage and meat birds. Need brooders with flexibility but also scale well. Ground ones just aren't cutting it anymore. I used to hate the idea of cabinet brooders and not putting birds on woodchips but now I'd rather stay away from woodchips if at all possible. Nice to use the old bedding for mulch, compost, and in garden walk ways. But it's a hassle with the dust it creates. Not to mention some breeds burn through the bedding.
    I wonder in your case why you didn't go for a grated bottom instead of a solid floor for the birds. Seems like a perfect setup to go the grate route and capture all the poop on trays.
    That and I get why the front doors are a hassle. I'm only building my brooders are top open ones.

      @HeirloomPermaculture  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We learned a lot after using this setup for a few rounds. We wanted the solid floor to "help" with dust. I didn't want everything in the garage any worse with dust than it would already be. Flip down doors seemed a good idea but proved nuisance as pointed out. Maybe shorter door that didn't come out so far when lowering would have been less hassle. Hanging it all a little lower on the wall would have been better too. The garage looks TOTALLY different now though.... th-cam.com/video/I75pZ-jXmfc/w-d-xo.html

    So did this work or were they too cold 🥶?
    The front mesh is what I’m trying so that’s why I’m asking.
    I heard those heaters don’t work they have to keep being raised and lowered or birds die if not perfect

      They work great for us. We've never lost a chick with the plates. Just check every couple days that the height is still correct. We sometimes angle a plate so one side is barely higher and then see which end they favor.

    What about the poop? How often do you clean the brooder before they are ready to transition to the yard or hen house?

    • @HeirloomPermaculture
      @HeirloomPermaculture  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It gets a layer a fresh shavings daily and totally cleaned out every few days. The chicks only stay in the brooder for 2 weeks.

    That's a really neat set up. My husband and I agree with you about the doors. We were both wondering though, what is that "heating pad thing" in the middle, straddling the 2 sections?

    • @HeirloomPermaculture
      @HeirloomPermaculture  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brinsea brooder plate warmer. We use them instead of heat lamps. Low energy use and much safer from a fire risk perspective.

    I have built many different brooders, and the one you have here is very similar to my current plan. I comment here to ask about the current status? Still using it? Made any modifications? I expect the doors and watering systems gave you the most issues, and hope you’ll post an update, thanks!

    • @HeirloomPermaculture
      @HeirloomPermaculture  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We're not currently using it for a number of reason (weather, inventory, etc...) The doors are definitely the most inconvenient part of the design. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      The green plastic riser is from Permier1 Supplies. It helps keep the water clean by catching bedding and etc.

    How much does it cost you?

    • @HeirloomPermaculture

      It was fairly cheap... no total at hand though. Optional plexiglas is the most.
