- How to build an easy chick brooder for when you are ready to move your baby chicks outdoors. This pen also works great as an integration pen to slowly introduce your new chicks to your existing flock. The baby chicks can grow up along side the adult chickens and will have their pecking order established by the time of release. This also functions as a hospital or quarantine pen if any of your chickens get injured or sick. We also use these as broody jail, to break a broody hen. Letting broody chickens raise baby chicks in one of these will also keep her chicks safe from the other chickens or predators. There are so many wonderful uses to having an extra pen and we think every chicken owner needs to have one. #chickens #babychicks #chickencoop

The lumber this guy uses looks perfect…anyone else struggle to find 2x2s that are not warped, knotted, split, etc.?
Haha, I know exactly what you mean. I buy them from Lowe’s. They come tied in bundles of 4 and they almost always are warped. I open them up at the store and pick them out individually. It seems like there is only 1 out of 4 that is a good piece.

Followed your steps and mine came out great! Thanks for listing all the supplies and cut sizes - made it super easy to build. One thing I'll add is that my box tends to go "out of square" with respect to the lid, so I added some 45 degree posts around the upper corners and now it's perfect. Thank you for the video!

Hey, thanks so much for the kind words. That was just a little dance of excitement of putting some walls together, lol. Gotta have a little fun! This is very easy to build, and yeah, a hardware cloth on the floor is not a bad idea. We like to have it opened bottom for the chicks/pullets to be able to scratch and dust bathe, but it's not a must. Thanks for tuning in to our channel, let me know if you end up building this. This is the best video I've watch. It is so detailed. I wish everybody was this way. It will be better for the ones that have NO IDEA how to build things if they give you all the measurements of what they are building and if we need to go bigger or smaller is on us to figure out the measurements.

Thanks a lot! Not even kidding when I say, I love wearing the boots, I can wear them all day and they feel like I'm walking on some comfy sneaker soles. I also like that they come in black vs the traditional work boot orange/brown.

This is so awesome. We just got 4 ducklings that we will need to introduce to our existing chicken flock. This will work perfect.
That’s exactly what we use it for, then when they are older it makes for a good hospital pen if one gets hurt to separate from the flock!

Great video, as usual. Cut my lumber yesterday, and will be building today. A note for others. 2 X 2s can be expensive, if even available. I simply ripped cheap 2 x 4s down to 1.75" and made the math adjustment for that extra 1/2". Box is going to be a little stronger (and a bit heavier) but it will work just fine. Each 8' piece ended up costing $1.64 compared to $3.35 for an actual 2x2. Also, NEVER use pressure treated wood for chickens. Splinters are a problem anyway, but a PT splinter is much worse.

so glad I watched this today and I learned something new, which is always good. I'm not great with matching up corners on wood, and it has been holding me back from building my own coop. But you just showed me how to solve my problem with those neat lil clamp thingies. Thank you, and of course it is always a pleasure to watch you both!
Thanks so much! Yeah those metal corner clamps are SO MUCH HELP, they give you a perfect 90 degree lineup at the corners. Link in the description of this video or you can also find it at Lowes.

We have 4 baby chicks now 2 on Friday and 2 on Saturday - the first 2 were her chicks then i popped another 2 eggs in and 21 days or so later out they came! We have put a waterproof roof on and put the broody pen inside the chicken coop electric fence and all the others have been roosting on top of the broody pen outside as so hot and far more interesting for them now as they can see the new arrivals.

Thanks a lot! Yeah the mesh cloth is the most annoying thing to work with as it tries to coil back and ends up scratching your arms lol. I have built things before right to the same measurement of the hardware cloth specifications, just to realize that the roll was not super straight from the factory and had to cut all my edges off. That's why I have been allowing myself half or a whole inch for wiggle room.

I really like this video, I’ve been wondering what setup to do for my chickens to give them new areas to explore and this is going to be perfect for supervised visits in my area. I only have 4 birds.
We also usually use this under supervised time outdoors in the grass or dirt for the babies to dust bathe. Or we end up putting it inside of our chicken run when we introduce the babies to the rest of the adult flock where it is more secure. Hope this works out for you!

As cliche as it sounds, if I can do it, anybody can! Prior to covid quarantine, I had never really even used a power drill or a saw. Hope what I show in the video is easy to understand. Let me know if you end up building one down the road.

Thank you very much! There is a lot to cover and I try to not over-explain things. I just tried to make the video as short as I could so that it wouldn't be boring. If you have adult hens, these make a great hospital pen to isolate them when they are sick/ hurt.

Great looking chicken cage and boots. How did you bolt the corners? I was thinking of making the bolts removable so I could disassemble and store flat when not needed.
Thanks!! The corners are simply attached by three screws on each corner which you can see if you skip towards the end. In theory, you really could take it apart and store flat, just need to unscrew the two hinges up on the top, but that's easy too! Good luck if you build this!

Advice please i was down to one chicken whos lovely and someone gave me three chickens and they are not very nice. We are not getting on at all. They are also not accepting my one lovely girl so i am having to keep her outside the pen most of the time. Its been over a week and I dont know what to do. Will they get nicer and friendlier or are they just not nice chickens. I am not enjoying them :(
Sorry to hear, it’s very stressful introducing new chickens they can be mean to each other. It can take a few weeks, but it will end eventually. I would recommend is to introduce through the pen for 2 weeks unable to fight because of the fence between them. If you already have done that I recommend pinpointing who the main bully is of the 3. There is most likely a ringleader and caging her for some time. Let the others get used to each other and then release the bully. We go over some more tips in this video here. Soon enough you’ll be back to enjoying your girls, as much as she doesn’t like the mean newcomers. Eventually she’ll be much happier as they are flock animals and need buddies

@@Divinefemininemiracles it will feel like forever but one day they will just be done, by next month will be a thing of the past. Just try to keep them busy with treats, hang a cabbage, and have multiple feeders and waterers out so a bully doesn’t stop them from using them. I would recommend wearing gloves if you touch a lash egg and putting her on an injectable antibiotic if she laid a lash egg. Hope she’s okay soon ❤️

Thanks! How cold? If draft free and a heat lamp we have brooded chicks completely outdoors. As long as the conditions they need are sustained. Usually we keep inside for 1 month, and have them handling room temperature at 3-4 weeks age, and then move outdoors and if below 65-70F we have a lamp on. They usually don’t even choose to be under it. We completely ween them off the lamp to handle 40-50F by 2 months of age. These pens also come in use as a hospital pen for sick of injured birds when you need to isolate them. Or to introduce new birds to the flock slowly through a fence so they cannot fight
I live in New Jersey. We won't have steady good weather until probably May. We have some warm days now but today it's like 35 degrees.
Yeah that will get here quickly. We will be missing the cold weather soon once it gets too hot. We had a presumed dead missing hen, show up a few years back in the freezing weather with a batch of chicks. She knew what she was doing though and raised them up just fine. But for ourselves, it’s way easier to just wait for the warmer weather to brood lol
