Same here, one of my all-time favourite SK books, a very strange one! Read twice. Then, I saw that the audiobook version was read by SK, had to buy it, read brilliantly! It's definitely my favourite audiobook!
The audiobook was fantastic! The Music added so much! The horniness was definitely a bit much but what really pulled me in was his relationship with the house and the ghost inside of it SPOILERS BELOW The thing about the fridge magnets and the thumping in the basement was so intriguing, and the dreams he’d have about the house before he went there filled me with dread too, the set up really was just great. I thought it was so interesting how the ghost wasn’t necessarily the enemy… but we didnt really know it’s intentions either and the whole time we were learning about his romance with maddy I just wanted to get back to that house!
I didn’t expect to like this book as much as I did, especially since I’ve read/heard iffy things about it. The story moved along at a good pace, and went in directions I didn’t expect it to. Yes, it’s a ghost story but damn, the people are the scary ones in this book. The last few chapters - where the full backstory is all but explained in painful, disgusting, brutal detail - are hauntingly sad. I can see these chapters being very difficult for some people to read as well, due to its graphic nature. That being said, King has never shied away from spotlighting the ugliness of human depravity, and that’s on full display in this book. Another thing I like are all the links to other King books and characters. This is another Castle Rock story but has links to Derry, and has characters from Insomnia, The Dark Half and Needful Things. With the former being a Dark Tower book in all but name, this story is somewhat linked to those books too. The story doesn’t rely on these links to build its own world and characters though, so I’d definitely recommend this book to both the Constant Reader as well as the King casual.
I just finished this book and I liked it but I was not in love with it. It’s not a bad read but I felt that it was way too long it could have been shorter because there were definitely very slow parts. It’s also sad very very sad because you start caring about mike so much throughout the novel and you just want to see him have a happy ending. Yes, he has Kyra and that’s great but he went through so much loss and that broke my heart. I think anyone that is a big Stephen king fan would like this.
but the. Miniseries was not bad probably because of Pierce Brosnan when I go back and reread the book that’s who I see in my head as Mike even though Pierce was a little bit older, but hey hey you can’t beat James Bond lol.
Great read. I'm happy it was in the reading list for the Dark Tower. However, I don't understand how this novel relates to the Dark Tower series. We get the guy from Insomnia in a couple of pages. Is that it or is there more?
I relate the Dark Tower to this text with the Todash references and being a spectator of a different time. Also, Ka brings Mike Noonan and Kyra together.
I bloody loved this book but man that rape scene was harsh. Very kind of you to let people jump out before the spoilers too! Doesn't bother me as I've pretty much read them all, but nice that you're restructuring your videos for other people.
Got to 100 pages from the end and just gave up. Like many have said, the book starts strong but somewhere around the middle it really starts to tumble. For me it’s the chapter where Mike and Mattie have their first long date. It just went on and on and Mattie and her kid are just uninteresting under-written characters that it was hard to care about them or the adoption plot line. There are some really good suspense scenes and the setup is interesting for a while, but I just lost interest in it. I might take a break from reading King after this one.
Have read 5 King books in 2023, finished Misery and that was my fave and moved on to this bc it was highly reviewed. I HATE IT. Its the worst book, urgh....! Possibly the worst book all 2023 even not only King but the whole years readingexperiences. Its so blah and bizarre but worst of all its lusty and very male-gazey, and im not even feminist, and even so I found this so.... Older guy fantazises about young girl and has tons of ghost sex. LAME
Happy to see you take this one. Would certainly be in my top 5 King novels.
Nice! It's definitely in the top half of my rankings list
One of my absolute favorite Stephen King novels of all time. I've literally just started the audiobook version and am equally pulled in by it.
Nice! I have a real soft spot for it

Love all of your comment, and that's great to hear how good the audiobook is...might have to check it out when I do my next reread

It definitely has its problems, but I love this book - my King guilty pleasure!
Just finished reading the book I really enjoyed it this book doesn't get the attention it deserves ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Oh nice! It's a lot of fun for sure!
@9:11 I’m assuming you meant Jared Devore
👍
I have seen the bag of bones miniseries starring pierce Brosnan but I haven't read the book I might read the book in march
The book is a *lot* better than the miniseries!
@@DaveReadsKing yep you are right the book is better than the miniseries

I don’t know, I thought the miniseries was pretty bad - Brosnan in particular 😂
Dave: "This book is horny as hell" "on the way to the bone zone"
Book title: "Bag of Bones"
LMAO 🤣😂 awesome
Yup...bag of boners more like

The house itself - Sara Laughs - has a twinner in book 6 of the Tower. Totally can’t remember its name off the top of my head, but it’s there!
I relate the Dark Tower to this text with the Todash references and being a spectator of a different time. Also, Ka brings Mike Noonan and Kyra together.

Thanks! And yeah, that scene...horrific
Yeah that scene was brutal.
Like the spoiler you just posed?
The 'King' of horror competing with the techno thriller guy. Never would have crossed my mind!
Yup!
??I want to kno what ‘work’ is about a huge forest fire in Maine ????
A Stephen King book about a forest fire? Hmm, I don’t know that there is one?
@@DaveReadsKing bugs me I can’t remember what story it was I read. Unincorporated TR that burned so bad they had to try to survive in the lake
@PenntuckySurvivalhobbies that plot feels like something I’ve encountered but maybe not in Stephen King? I’m as befuddled as you!
Any book with a curse is a book for me!
Nice!

Fair enough, I fully admit this one is far from his best but for some reason I really enjoy it 🤷🏻♂️
Definitely a 9/10 on the horniness scale.
You didn't mention of Ralph Robarts from insomnia.
Yep, that’s fair - although his appearance is somewhat fleeting!
@@DaveReadsKing yes..but crucial. He was the person who gave advice mike to go sara laughs if I remember correctly.
I suppose - although I think Mike would gone there anyway. All signs were pointing in that direction

Yeah, I can totally see that. Objectively, I know it’s bad but it’s become something of a guilty pleasure for me
i feel like there must be something im really missing bc everyone else seems to love it so much@@DaveReadsKing
The book SUCKS! So boring.
I can see that - I just have a soft spot for this one, it’s a bit of a guilty pleasure
