I grew up reading Stephen King books. My favs: Cujo, Pet semetary & Misery, An excellent author, so diverse. The movies never do the story justice

Me it was really The Green Mile that moved me the most. Misery was the best suspense I have Ever read and Apt Pupil was the best character building and dialogues I have read. Ever.
My favourite book of all time is Salem's Lot. And my 3 favourite King books are Salem's Lot, The Shining, and The Talisman

Amazing, I'm getting more into writing and learning to sharpen my prose. Watching interviews of intelligent writers and author's has been so interesting, but also humble. We're pretty lucky to be alive in the same time line as Stphen King, for I can see him being very seminal after he is gone. Thanks for the video!

Boom. The answer to my biggest problem right there. For me, it's not writer's block, but some kind of fear of creating, as if whatever I create is sure to be the worst thing ever. You don't think about the process or the technique, you just do it. And thinking back now, I know this works, cause I wrote 15,000 words without having ANY clue of where it was going, but the story had a life of its own, and it was funny and fun, and sometimes chilling. Then I started learning about storytelling and reading books, listening to lectures and podcasts, and poof. The ability to sit down and just write without fear was gone. I had created that judge in my mind by trying to write the perfect thing, which I now have criteria for. Holy cow. I've got to let that sink in a bit.

I really dig Stephen's take on advances. Im a musician and thats a huge part of how music labels can entrap a band or solo artist to stay in debt to the label for years and/or albums. Typically, it gets so bad that artists have to go back and buy their own catalog back from their label so they can own the publishing rights...know your music law folks!
Such a great guy. This is my first time watching an interview of him and I could watch for hours.
The sad part is, he was less than a year away in this interview from the being hit with a car incident that was going to change the rest of his life and almost end it.
It would be sad if it had ended it but it didn't I think it forged another meaning in his life and I find it beautiful.
It was a Minivan. I was wondering how close this was done to that incident. Thanks.

I picked up on that too. And in a 92 interview, he claimed that stanely kubrick destroyed the shining but In my opinion that was one of the scariest movies ever made. I read the book and saw the movie and the movie was terrible. But, in end it was all King -

The best ideas are like precious gems; they're not made, they're found.
Back then these black background shows really had kind of a intellectual, nice aura. No fancy greenscreen, no music, clear cut audio two people talking

Charlie Rose doesn't interview his guest. He has a conversation with them and that is why he's been so succesful. No mather how you may feel they've both been tremediously succesful in their respective career. I personally like his style cause he has this tone that doesn't have the quality of inviting a sentiment of having something to prove.
And its the same way Joe Rogen is so succesful now with his Podcasts.
Well he has to be one of the greatest authors of all time!

I highly recommend Rage audiobook. It's on TH-cam.
That's when he used the pen name, Richard Bauchman. One of the great short stories of the Bachman books. He wrote under a different name to see if people still would read his books, or if it was just because his name was already famous.
Just finished bag of bones. It is different from a lot of his stuff, but it is a wonderful book.

God had one of His biggest challenges for Stephen the following year, _really_ put him through the furnace of affliction getting hit by that van. So glad he recovered from it and kept on writing!
He wanted at least 10 more years of writing as of this interview, and he has had 14 so far.

I think its interesting that he has a problem with either the critics or customer calling him a horror writer. He thinks thats a derogatory term, but to his customer, that is a compliment. Shawkshank?? Stand by me?? An amazing writer, and regardless of what he says, the shining was one of the scariest books ever made
I don't think he has a problem with being called a horror writer - I think he balks at at being categorized as only a horror writer. Bag of Bones and Dumas Key and several others can't be put in that category. He has stated in other interviews over the years that he resists the idea that he is only capable of writing one kind of novel.
That’s not unusual. Most creative minds scoff at being relegated to genres because it’s limiting and potentially dismissive.

He got more than double the years he hoped for. I'm hoping he'll go for triple.

I didnt watch the interview yet im going to listen to it tomorrow on my walk since I'm about to watch one of his movies. I just wanted to give this man his flowers he got some great movies and I really dont even care for horror movies no more but I'm always down to watch 1 of his movies. I only know him for his movies but this interview will be interesting to listen to tomorrow to actually know something about him beside his films.

Loved hearing King talk ball. I use to be a beat writer for a website, and I once wrote a concept piece about the steroid era. Fans bitch and complain that they were deceived and acted like some great fraud was perpetrated upon them. However, they themselves are the ones that asked for that brand of baseball.
I could listen to these 2 talk all day.
In IT King says the question is not where do you get your ideas, its "why you get your ideas". ☠️

Love hearing his thoughts on the writing process (how much of himself is in his characters, whether a good night's sleep contributes to fresh ideas, etc). As a novelist myself, it's comforting to hear someone as successful and widely known as him have some of the same thought processes as someone like me who struggles for notoriety.

Not the biggest fan of Stephen's work but I always enjoy listening to his interviews and lectures. He's an interesting person.

I remember Bag of Bones being a good book. Too bad it was made into a shoddy A&E thing instead of something that could have risen to the original source.
I loved hearing him talk baseball at the beginning, not that I have any love of the game myself but I like hearing someone I admire known for something else talk shop on another subject.

I havent read any of his books to be honest, but I have seen almost all of the movies. And while the majority of the movies were not great, the ones that were are just in a league of their own.
But, I wouldnt mind hangin out with this guy. He seems rather fun, and funny.
All his books are WAY better than the movies, you really should try it! Unless you don't like reading at all, you will not be disappointed!

Just finished listening to The TommyKnockers in audio. Read the book years ago, his best story.
Back when baseball players all suddenly gained thirty pounds of muscle and started hitting 50+ home runs and people acted like there was nothing suspicious going on.

It's funny that I almost understand every single word he says, although English is not my mother language, and I am very bad at understanding spoken English. Is that a Maine thing? I mean people from Maine talks this slow and clear or what?

Excellent content with the King! But Charlie Rose always and I mean AlWAYS talks about how much money he makes and is worth……..it’s none of your nosey jealous business!…….he ALWAYS puts him on the spot like that and King smooths it out beautifully ……..what a stand up guy!
Charlie Rose is a terrible interviewer. He never lets his guests finish a thought.
Granted he interrupts way too much, but his questions elicits great responses..
The thing I love the most about Stevie-baby is the simple fact that he isn't pretentious. I love that. I get called crazy from other SK fans that I know cos I never liked both Misery or Cujo. I Tried a few readings at different times in my life and my dislike of them never changes. (bit of a segue to prove a point)First time I read the Exorcist I was a young boy down a coalmine, in the dark with only one other person who was a few hundred yards away. So I was MIGHTY SCARED. The second time I read it, I was an adult, with kids of my own, and my first thought was, "That poor child. Aww bless." So I can change. But not about the books I mentioned. I just don't like them. So shoot me. ha hah a. BH.

I agree with on his total lack of pretention. And I believe that's the primary reason why Kubrick's film of his book got under his skin. King is very about story and character and probably considers Kubrick's allegorical intentions hogwash and meaningless if he so blatantly neglects story and character. They were polar opposites as artists.

I always enjoy listening to Mr. King, (even discussing baseball...) but if baseball puts you to sleep, they finally leave that at ~3:10 or so. You're welcome. .......And though the interviewer's (CR's) laugh strikes me as pompous, and his interruptions are annoying, I will admit I'm glad he inserted the facts that Mr. King donated so much toward libraries (and ballparks) and other things we're not aware of (paraphrasing). Info you'll not hear Mr. K bring up himself.

Ok. This guy lost control of this interview right out the gate... don’t get in the weeds in Baseball dude! Stick with Stephen, and his work.
Getting the guest comfortable, creating an atmosphere where it’s a conversation rather than 20 questions (as you always get more volunteered info when the guest is comfortable and feels like they are just having a conversation), and treating the guest like a person with depth, instead of making them feel defined solely for what they are known for... all seem like reasonable ways to start an interview
