    For the benefit of those who didn't see the Post-ZP stream, the game's developer Paul Helman joined us on the Twitch chat for a bit but then mysteriously disappeared after about an hour or so, which just so happened to be around the time the game's problems arose and people stopped praising and started criticising it.
    I did feel a bit bad after he vanished and I really hope we didn't destroy his self-esteem because it was quite an interesting game; it just had quite a few glaring issues namely too many cutscenes, unfocused story & gameplay and glitches. Personally I got a modern-day George Lucas vibe from Mr. Helman; he has good ideas he just needs someone else to give him notes and encourage him to take stuff out that doesn't work.

      Crazelord91 I hope so. Tbf I can’t see patches changing the story but hopefully it’ll take out the glitches. I mean the stream abruptly ended cuz Yahtzee encountered a glitch that prevented him from going any further.

      Martin Herchel Same here. Apparently he’d been working on it for 7 years. Which would explain meandering story and constant gameplay changes.

    • @NathanCassidy721

      What that tells me is somebody didn’t want to hear criticism.
      Either because he/she is a rampant egotist who only wants praise as is the case with a lot of indie devs. Or if he’s been working on it for so long he doesn’t want to touch it, either from burnout or knowing that he’s just gonna cram more stuff in there.

  • @ramdomgunner97

    This video was actually quite the lesson in game design. I legitimately hope Mr Paul Helman sees it and is able to use its criticism towards making a more focused sequel, cause that would be an excellent game I'm sure

    Dear Paul Helman,
    I too am working on a creative project that has taken years to build up, and an added difficulty that I have is that I want to include multiple parts that happen at the same time but in other places so they influence each other and yet are different. Even though some people have found problems with Horace, you know know what those problems are, and can now remaster it. If you streamline it and remove the ill-fitting parts, then people will get what they loved about the original and know that it's less flawed. Plus, remasters always attract a lot of new customers.

    Regarding the intro: I remembered probably the ur-example of when video games used to be good (purely in the sense of being less anti-consumer - damn solid game but not in the GOAT strata by any means). D'you remember when Rebel Strike on the GameCube was like, "right, so we've crafted you a complete, satisfying campaign (ground-based level... issues notwithstanding,) with a whole bunch of customisation options and neat challenges with multiple tiers to make replayability virtually infinite...
    ...oh, yeah, and in case you get bored we bolted on a complete remaster of the entire previous game in the series _for free_ and added a co-op mode to it."
    Like, if you suggested that to a major publisher today, they wouldn't just fire you, they'd call the police on the assumption that you were on at least four different illegal substances at once.

    I played the whole game a couple of times and I got to say, I love it. I didn't really have problems with bugs or what not. Might have happend a few times but they were pretty funny and didn't destroy my whole run. The part after the Metroidvania bit goes back to normal and there is a couple heartbreaking scenes in the story. The ending is pretty good as well. My first time playing took me 20h to just finish the game but already the second playthrough took me just 10h to 100% the game. I wouldn't say this game is difficult but more that it's tricky (especially the bosses), you definitely need to get used to the game and play by it's rules. Minigames are fun but some are too difficult in my opinion. I broke my controller trying to complete one minigame that required me to smash both shoulder buttons like crazy. So yeah. Music is mostly fun and I like the use of classic music infused with 8-bit. Does it feel like too much? Yes, first time playing I was blown away how much it lasted. But I was thankful for it. There you go, my mini review.

    3-4 years later, it feels REALLY off for Yahtzee to complain about the file size. Ok, it was off when this video released as well, but how many AAA games are over 100GB now? 16Gb for a large 2D platformer that takes a good many hours to get through feels tame.

    • @ironicdivinemandatestan4262

      Tears of the Kingdom is 18.2GB, so a 2D pixel art platformer with that kind of file size needs a serious paring down.

    At first, I thought this was going to be a revival of the old 1980s Horace games for the ZX Spectrum, especially with its pixel aesthetic. Though this game is certainly an improvement from "Pac-Man clone with a weird blue face with legs."

    Taking it from Yahtzee (an actual British person) the Britishness of this game is probably less stereotypical. Horace is probably what We Happy Few was meant to be

      Indy version because it's a passion project the creator wasn't willing to cut things out of: yes.
      Indy version because it starts great and gets bad later: no. Yahtzee had absolutely nothing positive to say about Too Human and called it the worst game he ever reviewed in the Dark Void video. "Crispy fried puke right down to the bone marrow" was the phrase, i believe.

    • @Rendo86
      @Rendo86 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@BFedie518 also Too Human was made by a studio that made a interesting story driven horror game with great mechanics named Eternal Darkness then make a action brawler about a generic space marine with mythological themes and bad combat mechanics. Is it me or do years in the making magnum opus' like these mutate as the years go on?

    • @jcohasset23
      @jcohasset23 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Rendo86 The combat mechanics weren't that bad in Too Human. Now it did have the issue of roughly half of the upgrades/play styles being designed for co-op multiplayer and useless in single player and a bit of too much randomness to those status effect enemies that could only be damaged effectively with melee but exploded and hit the player with all sorts of status effects when destroyed (usually resulting in death). The controls also took some getting use to. It was a fun game but it never lived up to the hype the game tried to advertise with the engine controversy sealing its fate. It probably could have survived if it had been a couch co-op style game even if the narrative doesn't make sense in co-op with 2 Balders.
