    My dad always tells me “it’s much more about the student than it is about the school.” I live in Montana and will probably go to Montana State University next year. It’s not as prestigious as some of the schools my friends are going to, but being closer to my family and the in state tuition just makes it the better choice for me. My dream is to go to medical school, and my dad, who is a doctor, told me that some of the smartest people in his med school class were from small state schools and places he had never even heard of.

    Great Video! Fact: Its unlikely that you will get into Google or Facebook etc without going to a top school. Fact. However, after 5 years it won't matter. After 5 years employers want to look at your CV to gauge what you have done. What's also fact is that when you get to Stanford and get a job at google everyone will be from a top school. Then after a few years, you'll find out that there are people a lot smarter and more politically savvy than you and they will get promoted. Google can't promote everyone, so after 5 years your Standford degree won't help you. This is why when they do satisfaction surveys of alumni of top students after about 10 years these students are less likely to be satisfied. Whereas students from lesser schools are much happier. For example, the highest-paid attorneys in America are NOT from Ivy League schools. The best attorneys go to modest law schools and are much happier. Choose a school that is best for you! Period.

    I think the prestige of a school is overrated. It doesn't really matter where you go. All universities follow the same curriculum. You can get an education that's just as great at Michigan State and UW-Madison like you would at Stanford or Harvard. Of course most people would choose to go to Stanford or Harvard if accepted but let's face it, most people don't have a chance getting into these elite schools so these people including me have to settle for lower name universities.

    • @carlosc.4683
      @carlosc.4683 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I agree to an extent. When it comes to graduating and competing for a job, prestige can help get your foot in the door, but what really makes a difference is the networking aspect which is tied to the university. Prestigious universities usually have more networking opportunities than their less selective counterparts. At the end of the day though, the prestige of the institution you attended shouldn't dictate your success post graduation, your competence does.

    • @MrDodger3222
      @MrDodger3222 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@carlosc.4683 Of course if it's somewhere like Stanford, certain employers recruit graduates from the school. But employers usually don't care where you got your degree from. Hell, there's plenty of people with degrees that are working jobs that don't even require a degree.

    I think it’s a little far fetched to go from talking about those who are stupid to those who are attending community college for a long time. You don’t know that guys story maybe he has kids has to work his way & save up for university i don’t think it’s sad to attend community college for a while everyone has a different story.

    • @MrDodger3222
      @MrDodger3222 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It took me 5 years to graduate and earn all units needed to transfer to university at community college. But this is because I wanted to have the maximum of 64 units to transfer with to save money. I was only averaging 6 units a quarter because I was working full time. I wasn't clear at first if I wanted to earn a AA degree and transfer. I was just taking random classes and going as a drop in during my first 5 quarters or so. I failed 2 classes, dropped 4 or 5 classes, changed my major once and had to take a few remedial classes in Math and English since my placement test scores sucked which also delayed my time to transfer. I think this explains very well why I was at community college for so long lol. I still finished with a 3.2 GPA at community college and my time there prepared me great for Arizona State. I finished in 4 semesters at ASU, finished with a BA and a minor with high honors with a 3.75 GPA!! But if I could back in time and do community college all over again, the things I would do differently is that I would have taken at least 12 units a quarter, gone to summer school every year taking 5 to 8 units, hired a tutor to prepare for the Math and English placement tests, studied exactly how the tutor would teach me, would have gone to tutoring a lot more and would have had my educational plan set right when I started college. I would have finished sooner and with a better GPA. But if I go to grad school, I'm going to do a lot better this time around!!

    Meh... Go to the school where you can do well and get the best degree possible in terms of personal interest and ROI. I wish someone given me this advice when I was 17. Look, I'll prefer my child attend earn a degree in Computer science and graduates with a 3.9 GPA than attend Princeton or Brown and earn a degree in Dance. There is always grad school if you're looking for prestige. I know many people that graduated from lowly ranked schools and still got into HBS, medical school, etc.

    actually it depends where you live, in Arizona, there's a lot of people who got a job with WGU degrees, associates degrees, or just experience maybe because it is easier to get a job in Arizona compared to California. But I think you need to go to a prestigious school if you're becoming a doctor in Arizona.

    As someone who lives in Fairfield County Connecticut, I agree with this video, but I can say I go to a very competitive high school. But not necessarily ivy league competitive. Some of the most popular schools from my HS include Tulane, BC, BU, Northeastern, University of Michigan, UMiami, and UT Austin. All of which accept less than 50% of their applicants.
    But some of the most popular schools from my HS also include Elon University, University of Colorado, Penn State, Indiana University, UConn, and Syracuse all of which accept more than 50% of their applicants.
    But that doesn’t mean it’s still not competitive, everyone at my HS obsesses over it.
    Not to sound arrogant but I’m not qualified to go to a top 10 or 25 university. But I’ve been eyeing schools with less than a 70% acceptance rate.
    The reason for that is because everyone at my HS get turned off by 80%+ acceptance rates, and True Story, I’ve witnessed a student being laughed at and made fun of for Indiana and UConn being her top choices and while witnessing this, I thought to myself damn, next year, I don’t want to be made fun of for choosing a school which is too easy to get into.

      The intro courses at USC are probably equally difficult to any major institution in the country. Certainly, your major will influence the level of difficulty (e.g film vs engineering). Once you get deeper into your major, you will benefit from the smaller class size and faculty with industry knowledge.

      As a University of Southern California (USC) alum, I can tell you that a good work ethic is imperative. The professors are laid back and supportive. But, you have to invest the time in your studies to succeed. They won't cut any slack. They'll give you what you earn. The curriculum isn't that taxing, unless you're in a program like engineering. I don't think the college you go to matters when it comes to studying and getting a degree, it's just the degree you get for employment matters. Because for every college, depending on what you study, all college professors will probably teach the course in a similar way to other college professors

If not, why not go to a state school? Join professional organizations in your field. Read books and articles and explore social media that give advice on getting top jobs in your field without having a prestige degree. Etc. "Top 22 business schools" mean little to me, ME, unless you're referencing Stanford, Chicago, Yale, Virginia (Darden), Dartmouth, Columbia, Wharton (U PA), Harvard and others in the top-10.
