if you also have the Tiptronic "manual" option), use a flathead screwdriver to pop off the chrome ring under the shifter. push out the retaining clip with you finger (catch it when it springs out or it will drop between the seats). press the shifter button and pull up to remove the shifter handle. Make sure the lower dash storage compartment is open, so you have room to work. Use the screwdriver to gently work loose the floor shifter assembly cover (everything snaps back together). At the spot where "Drive" is, you see a loose connector to the left. Push it gently to the right and up, and it will snap back into place. Snap the assembly cover back down, slide the chrome trim piece back onto the shifter. Push the shift handle back onto the shifter, replace the retaining clip, and pull up the chrome trim ring, snapping it back into place. It literally takes longer to type it than it does to repair it!
The transmission will not down shift which is the normal response of a tranmission under a heavy torque situation e.g. uphill etc. This CVT transmission overheats and then it won't down shift it stays in a high gear ratio and eventually the fail safe begins to engage (heat) and it feels like it is slipping... If you stop and let the car coool down its normal for a while then starts up again. .
Eric Ash hey eric, r u technician? I got maxima 2014 and after drive at 80mh speed for 40-60 mins rpm wont go over 4000-5000 but when car is cooled it goes way crazy till 7000 rpm! What u think?
I changed the CVT fluid at 44,000 miles and then 94,000 miles, with recommended CVT change at 60,000. It is said the CVT fluid can last 100k, this is bull shit. I saw a marked improvement in performance once i changed the CVT FLUID, uphills. Although the Whining is still there for hard acceleration or sport driving up and around hilly areas. The car is awesome on flat ground UNTIL you try to open up on a freeway full throttle then you start start to see that the CVT issue again.
try turning traction control off. For some reason, it's working for me. I am currently on the highway having this issue and turned my traction control off and regain control of my car.
How Nissan paired this cvt trans with this engine application blows my mind. Your cvt is basically done after this happens. Hope you were able to get it fixed through warranty because the trans will have to be replaced
The reason for them doing this is monetary. A CVT transmission is cheaper to build than the standard AT (planetary gear transmission). But the CVT from the beginning was KNOW to have problems. It is a peace of garbage. And is MUCH costlier to diagnose the problem; not to mention repair it. Yes, you will hear "glory" stories and some do well. But most do not experience that. My Nissan Maxima was bad from the day I bought it brand new. Nissan refused to doing anything about it. They said, "It was normal". Yet the CVT vibrates the entire car between 20 to 30 RPM. I hate it. Than I found out that there is NOTHING that can be done about it; except change the transmission; but they refuse. They say "Learn to gun the engine and you won't have the vibration". That is true, but I have never (88 yrs old now) gunned an engine in ALL of the cars I have ever had. Sad indeed. I suggest that a buyer choose the "Toyota Avalon" (same elite car like the Nissan Maxima) with the standard transmission. It easily gets 300,000+ miles; and rarely a transmission problem. Oh indeed. I haven't the money so I have to live with the peace of crap. For what it's worth.
No, not really. There is a service bulletin for the STEP UP MOTOR which is part of the mechanism that changes the Gear Ratio - CVT pulley width - it fails. I got Step Up Motor Code the first time around and it has since disappeared. This is why nissan extended the warranty.
Its best to sneak a trade in because I tried many ways to fix my issue. I knoticed some used car dealerships has other nissians that I wondered if people did the same thing. They tried to sell me another one but fuck that!
DIAGNOSIS - CVT IS NOT GOOD FOR HIGH TORQUE APPLICATIONS. I am thinking Infiniti G37 3.7liter with a normal tranny, or, Acura TL - normal tranny which may probably beat the max hands down with its diminished CVT, or, BMW 335.
Hi Eric I have a 07 Nissan Maxima 3.5 SL and I'm having similar problems the whining yes I paid about 200+ for a sensor and had it installed 5 mos later it's back and now its sounds like it's in high gear in when I get to 3 so I started shifting out Manually even though I can hear it change out to 3 again from there its a light feel when shifting to 4 to 5 and still that whining sound its like stress on the transmission do you have any idea what's wrong???? I also notice that it will smokes after I get off the freeway
CVT is defective or just poorly constructed. There is a nissan technical bulliten out and a video on the CVT itself. The step up motor (solenoid) mechanism engages the gear ratios, can't handle the high torque especially with a load placed on the car e.g. passengers, going fast, repeated steep inclines. etc.
Exactly ... nisssan's claim and sales pitch that THE MAXIMA is indeed a "maxima" or "four door sports car" is completely misleading and fickle.... its an "ECO" thing... they should call it "eco sports car" or the slower less powerful, weaker, sluggish eco Model..lol
yeah idk what to say about it man fuck thats rough. I picked up a 2012 altima 2.5l for a little bit of power and good mpg. im rocking 40 mpg on average with my driving style. I own a 2006 gt mustang as well thats pretty modded and thats why i picked up this altima. To put miles on it and be my daily driver. It is weird, the no shift feel... definently take it easy with the CVT transmissions they are good it just they arent meant to take 200+ ft lbs of torque.. at least from what im reading.
you dont need power on the streets. not many cars are worthy to call sports cars that are street legal. no street legal car will ever have the awesome sound of a track only.
Without a FULL CVT FAILURE the dealer won't help unless you pay them a lot of money. The CVT is not good for High Torque applications hence the whining up Hill. I can imagine the Whining will drastically increase if the car had a load placed on it like a trailer or packing the car with passengers. This will cause the CVT to overheat and engage the fail safe and lack of shifting. AT this point the Max is no longer a MAX due to the CVT . It drives well on flat ground and around town.
I’m thinking of maxima. But I’m hearing how bad cvt is for most. I’d prefer automatic transmission. I just have to test drive a cvt for myself as well.
LOL.... Strome88 you must be Nissan Dealer Mechanic with that prognosis... LOL. Hint Hint, go to a real mechanic school next time. jokes. I replaced a rim but have yet to replace the TPMS sensor with the original. Tire pressure has nothing to do with the CVT by the way. But if you check your tire pressure you will see that its to low or high and requires periodic adjustment...lol
THE DEALER WON'T EVEN BUY THE MAXIMA BACK without a sever cut in the trade in value. Dealers Pay $25,000 for the car and want to sell it for $40,000k and then they offer no support when your car get issues. NISSAN NEEDS TO FIX THE MAXIMA CVT ISSUE. THE MAXIMA its no longer a MAXIMA a four door sports car.......*sniff sniff* except on flat ground... Sorry but i'm disappointed ...
Nissan altima sucks too has the same transmission and i had problems ever since i bought it (brand new) 2013 i am finally getting rid of it with the lemon law but i will never buy a nissan again
They don't have the same transmission. The Maximas have much better, stronger and reliable CVTs. CVT will be the future of fossil fuel based transmissions. With more and more electric car adoption, the standard transmission and its shift shocks will no longer be a thing of any adoration. And if gasoline engines keep surviving, then they'll be trying to emulate electric car performance and that's done best with CVTs. Nissan is obsessed with the concept of it and their cars have been the guinea pigs for the technology, which is really sad for their customers. But they've come a long way and when everyone else also use CVTs, Nissan will have the best of them, from all the experience.

Nissan Driver: I just need to downshift
CVT: What's that?
It's a CVT... There are no real gears bro...
I changed the CVT fluid at 44,000 miles and then 94,000 miles, with recommended CVT change at 60,000. It is said the CVT fluid can last 100k, this is bull shit. my 2008 Works awesome I just change the fluid and 102000 and it's absolutely awesome punch it do whatever it's all good
How is it now?!

Cam shaft sensor man that what was wrong with mine
Same thing happened to mine this weekend. Did u find out what the problem was?
Why did you never take it out of manual mode? Ever think that might solve the problem? lmao
Vikk 54 same thing I said
Its best to sneak a trade in because I tried many ways to fix my issue. I knoticed some used car dealerships has other nissians that I wondered if people did the same thing. They tried to sell me another one but fuck that!

CVT is meant for ECO why the hell would you ever punch it or torque this car..
Exactly ... nisssan's claim and sales pitch that THE MAXIMA is indeed a "maxima" or "four door sports car" is completely misleading and fickle.... its an "ECO" thing... they should call it "eco sports car" or the slower less powerful, weaker, sluggish eco Model..lol

it just

Yes correct.. it would make a good all around car just no power ..
you dont need power on the streets.
not many cars are worthy to call sports cars that are street legal. no street legal car will ever have the awesome sound of a track only.
lol i totally posted on the wrong video here
Change your cam sensors both
>6th gear
it doesn't have traditional gears, they are just simulated gear shifts
I'm not sure why anyone would subscribe to this. It's not educational at all
Looks like it's stuck in 6th gear ?

My maxima made it a whole 66k miles
This is my 3rd Maxima so far............
I’m thinking of maxima. But I’m hearing how bad cvt is for most. I’d prefer automatic transmission. I just have to test drive a cvt for myself as well.
I had a 2012 Nissan versa SL bought it with 43000 miles. was an awesome car until the car would jerk an cutoff wen I would press the gas.
Stuck in 6 and high rpm
LOL.... Strome88 you must be Nissan Dealer Mechanic with that prognosis... LOL. Hint Hint, go to a real mechanic school next time. jokes. Stop buying this crap
it's not crap... maximas are awesome. he just fucked up the camshaft because he didn't know what he was doing
maybe old maximas
Maxima's are not crap do you no how fast that thing is
Renault=nissan=JUNK!!!!!
Nissan altima sucks too has the same transmission and i had problems ever since i bought it (brand new) 2013 i am finally getting rid of it with the lemon law but i will never buy a nissan again
