      Not always. With mine, I'm almost certain it's the video flex cable, which goes bad on many models due to friction depending on how they fasten the lid to the unit. Also the display inverter can go bad, but I've heard those tend to be more durable than the cables, provided they aren't exposed to frequent excess heat.
      Laptops now though? With the typical build quality, it's usually the chassis itself or the hinge area that sets off a domino effect of destruction.

    Did you know...if you sold that laptop display you can buy used pc monitor and even have some money left..decent ones go for about the 1/2 price you paid for the board you used and they come assembled.

      @@techfulgoodies I just had to say it😂 glad i got your attention🤣 Well, "decent" is a broad and subjective term, but since we are not talking premium display quality here becose we are reusing few years old laptop screen, and i don't know about the US, but here in Bosnia, yes, working used few years old 15-19 inch pc monitor can be bought for about 15-20$ at local relcyclers. Checked just now, Acer 19" wide screen was 18.5$. Used laptop screens in good condition are way more expensive and easily sold to repair shops for about 30-40$, plus if you want to use them as a external monitor you also need to build a case, wich is time consuming and probably gonna cost another 10-15$ at least. I have few dead laptops around the house and was looking to reuse screens as you did, but i didn't becose..well..math😀. But.. reusing laptop screens like that can be great thing if you need a monitor for a project to fit in certan dimensions and pc monitors don't come in that size, or they need 12v low power consuption monitor with hdmi input etc etc becose those can be very expensive. As a fellow tinkerer ,"Fun to do project" is a whole another matter, you can't put a price on that, i no way but "it's fun" i could justify putting 100s of $ in 30 year old Amiga🤣

    Scaler device is always more expensive then old monitor of corresponding resolution. Monitor below 4K costs $30 and a scaler for it costs $25, you also need a PSU for both. And 4K scaler is a rare item >€100 and the refreshment rate is not guaranteed.

    Ironically I'm typing on that very laptop right now - the panel on these is a TN panel and the cost of the daughterboard makes it far from cost effective for anything but niche uses such as a custom installation or something.
    If the system itself is still functional - it's got quite a useful life as a slave/workhorse machine. I had parts left over to assemble a Thinkpad T420 with no keyboard or screen, I use wake-on-lan (it's in a docking station) and use its Debian 11 installation to perform recompression, checksum production, etc. even on other machines. I can send it to standby, wake it with a WoL header packet. Even when it's on the power draw is minimal, it's useful well beyond the effort to get it going.

    • @techfulgoodies
      @techfulgoodies  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would agree, this is more for people looking for a fun thing to do with a completely busted machine. You have more skill than I do when it comes to re-using the internals but also my laptop was used and abused by my young kids so it was DEAD. I use the monitor for an external camera hdmi monitor so I can see while filming so it works fine for $30

    Are LED / LCD laptop monitor cable connectors universal? And what about monitor power rating, voltage, amperage, etc?
    I've been looking into getting a screen replacement for my now rather ancient HP Pavilion dv4-12xx (I know I REALLY shouldn't invest in it, but it was the first and only computer I've bought at retail), but noticed there are several different screen options even per model. Still can't figure out which one is best or which ones are compatible with my particular model.
    I want to replace the motherboard too to switch it from AMD to Intel, for an ever so slightly better CPU and GPU... But the only place I've found selling it as a complete mobo combo package hasn't replied and worried the company might be defunct now. Pinnacle Tech I think? If anyone has any info on them.

    • @techfulgoodies
      @techfulgoodies  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No they are not universal. If you look on the back of the monitor there is a model number (for me it was LTN140KT07) and that is the specific panel that I needed to buy an adapter for. You would potentially have to take out the old monitor to find out exactly what panel you need. Sorry, no info on mobo combos.
