My Biggest Challenge Yet. And You Won't Believe How Close It Gets...Scotland to Switzerland By Train

- When fellow TH-cam creator Nonstop Eurotrip set me a challenge, I just couldn't turn it down. Within a couple of days I was standing on the platform at Montrose Railway Station looking forward to the long journey south. Are you ready for the stress of seeing if I make it in 24 hours? Enjoy the video :D

I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You may not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)
I do ALL of this myself. Planning, filming, editing, promoting, all with a weekly upload schedule, so please understand not every video will be an epic adventure. But my pledge is to always do my best in any situation and KEEP THE CAMERA ROLLING :)

FAQs:
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up (in which case, likely to be Tuesday at 5pm)
WHY IS THERE A DELAY BETWEEN TRIP AND VIDEO APPEARING?
This is both my business model and a result of doing everything myself. Editing takes time and I also like to schedule videos a bit in advance in case of any problems/illness/cancellations etc. Keeping my uploads appearing every Saturday is important to me, so I don’t want anything to get in the way of it. Also, I occasionally need some time off to recover from trips! But more than anything else, it's about budgets. I generally need to film a number of videos on each trip to break even. And each one of these take a while to fall into place on a Saturday morning.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc. I also have a DJI Pocket 3 (bigger sensor) for nighttime, although I’m still getting to grips with it.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman. Also my weekly upload schedule means I need to keep on the move.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature whenever possible, but she has her own life and a proper job so it can take a while for our schedules to match up. Trust me though, I prefer it when She is there too!
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free. Notice I don’t have mid-roll ads though!
CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links in here for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for TH-cam Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.
#SteveMarsh #Challenge #MontroseMontreux
Love the fact that these videos arent interrupted by the usual TH-cam Ads or the sponsored by NordVPN etc etc nonsense. All at a financial loss to Steve. It is very much appreciated.

I have an amusing story for you Steve. Last week I was on the Manly Ferry, in Sydney, and got talking to an older couple. You know how us Aussie love a chat, just like the Scots :) Anyway it turned out they were from Montrose, and whilst they don't know you personally, they too love your channel. You sir, are bringing people together across the world :)
Haha amazing cheers!
22:10 - "you know what, I think I'll just stand" - code for, "I'm not sitting near that screaming kid!" 😂
I thought exactly the same thing.
A screaming kid not for me lol
YEP! Im always the same
That kid is very well travelled, those dulcet tones were on a flight from Melbourne to London
I thought that too.
That video was total nuts. That's why I loved it. Well done!
It was a bit like a top gear challenge, in that I KNEW it would be close, but I still didn't expect it to be THAT close :)
@@steve-marsh It doesn't have to be close if you pick a better departure time. In theory the best time is 18h15m, departing at 6.35 AM on a Friday. In the other direction it's 16h38m, departing at 6.48 AM on a weekday.
As a Scottish/Swiss national and a train enthusiast, this video is absolute perfection
For me too - love trains, Scotland and Switzerland........I think the UK should invite the Swiss to run our railways!

Hey mate glad you enjoyed my challenge, I certainly enjoyed watching it and so did everyone else by the looks of it! I'm in Montreux next week by chance.... And my invoice for 10% revenue is in the post 😂
Thanks again mate for such a great video idea! And like I said, you landed me in one of the most beautiful places I've ever been, you're worth your cut, but I'll change my address :D Have a great time there! Next week will be the Rochers-de-Naye cog railway (and then a wee video on Montreux itself midweek after) Cheers!
@@steve-marsh
already looking forward to that video of the cog railway, Steve;
thanks for this one, yet another fan-daby-dozey video 👍👍
(edge of the seat stuff; I actually cheered loudly (much to the consternation of Herself) when you stepped off the train at Montreux within the 24 hour target);
great to see you fulfil your ambition to ride a dooobel-dekkah at last, btw.
@@steve-marsh I'll look forward to it! 😎
This is armchair travel deluxe. I love the views of ordinary life in faraway places... Thanks Steve.
“Everything’s so amplified in my head.” Cue emergency services siren. 😂 As always Steve, an absolute joy to watch and well done. Although that night in London isn’t my cup of tea at all.
An absolutely great idea for a challenge - who's up for Newcastle (England) to Neuchatel (Switzerland) next 😅
Or Newcastle New South Wales
Well done, Steve! I can see my hoose behind your right ear when you were on the footbridge at Montrose. I need to clean the windys.

Next up: Sculthorpe England to Skultorp Sweden.
Remember to say "Hi" to the road department (Vägförvaltning).

Birmingham, England, to Birming Ham, Alabama? South Wales to New South Wales?
Inverness Scotland to Inverness Florida 😎😀
@@terranceparsons5185 In 24 hours? By train? That's definitely gonna go viral.
Switzerland looks like a really beautiful country, it is most certainly on my bucket list. Job well done Steve.
I can assure you that there's only one thing better than seeing an HST: Driving one.
Bib, former HST driver.
I've been following your channel for a while and each video is as enjoyable as the next. Thank you.
I enjoy your challenge videos very much but worry that they take too much out of you. Thanks for taking us along for the ride and please stay safe and healthy.
Epic video Steve, had me right from the start, your video editing and commentary hits a chord with all of us who watch your videos presumably, very well done :)
With seconds to spare, great work, mate! Loved this video. Your heart must have been pounding at the end. And shoutout to @NonstopEurotrip for coming up with the challenge! :) What are you going to give him in return?
Also, painful to read your notes at the end and see yet more evidence of Eurostar's insane pricing... the UK is so close to mainland Europe, and yet crossing that gap in a low-emissions way is such a ridiculous financial hurdle :(
Very enjoyable! Thank you for taking us with you! I feel out of breath right now! Looking forward to your showing us around , now that we are here! :0) !
I don't know about recognising Paris so easily but when you showed the first station in Switzerland I could tell that from the architecture. Travelling around Europe last year you could virtually always tell which country you were in by the buildings. I found Swiss railways to be excellent at least the local trains in the Interlaken area. They were on time and when you reached the station the connecting train was waiting at the platform. The trains were modern, clean and comfortable, I did buy a rail pass which covered the trains, mountain railways, cable cars and lake steamers.
"we all came out to Montreux, on the Lake Geneva Shoreline.."
Hopefully ther's no fire this time, & funky Claude is not needed !!!!!
My first thought when heard/saw the place name of Montreux was the song 'Smoke on the Water', especially the guitar intro.
I was 12 when that song was released. Now I can't get it out of my head.
You beat me to it but I'm just waking up in Melbourne, Australia. I want to see the smoke on the water and the fire in the sky in the next update. 😎
I was gonna bring it up but I just knew someone else did already! 😎👍
This guy has surpassed Hero. He's a living Legend. Thanks for taking us with you, Steve. What a ride. Congratulations.
Another brilliant video Steve well done 👍
To link your last 2 videos I was doing work experience in Sheffield in the late 80s & they were doing an office competition to forecast the winners of the English and Scottish leagues for the upcoming season. Some people who didn't follow football were struggling a bit and the man organising it asked one woman why she'd gone for Montrose in the Scottish 2nd division and she said because she liked their music festival.
You have to be desperate if you are looking for a mcdonalds. Ok , I’m going for a nap.
You really know how to build the suspense, fella! 😉 I was right there with you, murmuring “Come on, come on!!” 😅 What a fantastic journey, you really took the team on your back for this one. Wishing you a good rest and a leisurely shower and a full, proper meal. 👍🏼 As always, thanks for starting off my day on a good foot! 🎉
Great video, I really enjoyed seeing this journey alongside a fun concept of doing it within 24hrs. Also, as someone who lives in both Nottingham and London then travels to Edinburgh for work semi-regularly. I felt seen in this video…😆. First, I’ve taken the Lumo to London quite a few times and I knew you’d likely not get any sleep. It’s truly a budget train experience and they’re usually quite noisy/busy. Second, as a very frequent passenger on the train from London to Nottingham - the prices you saw are correct and absurd. Keep up the good work.
Wow….couldn’t have been any closer 👏👏👏
Bravo on completing your challenge, look forward to seeing Montreux
So sing along now...
We all came out to Montreux
On the Lake Geneva shoreline...
You are mental! Thank god.
I read some stat that 96% (or thereabouts, a lot anyway) of all late trains in Switzerland, the lateness is caused by trains that are arriving from other countries. So basically, Swiss trains, in Switzerland, never late. And from my experience, that’s true. Great video Steve, thank you.
Yes - I remember arriving at Berne Station for a train to Interlaken and being met by a staff member apologising for it's late running and suggesting the concourse shops or cafes to pass the time.....despite it only being 15 minutes behind schedule! I remarked how I thought it unusual for a train to run late in Switzerland - his answer "Ah, that's because it's come from Germany!"
I take the same Route for almost 20 Years now to go to Work (1 Hour each direction with 1 Trainswitch at "Zürich Altstetten" ) and my Train was late 5 times in these 20 Years, so i do not have anything to complain ^^
Astonishing. In England, your train would be late 5 (or quite possibly 10) times a week!
Back in 2012 I did something similar. I’d always wanted to travel from my home in Dundee to my friends in Marseilles entirely by rail so …..
Train Dundee tonEdinburgh then sleeper Edinburgh to London Euston; walk to Kings Cross/St Pancreas to catch Eurostar then Gare du Nord. I took an internal Paris train to the Gare de Lyons, from where I took a TGV straight to Marseilles. There, my friend met me at the station. Total time about 18 hours station to station. The journey was done when sleeper trains were reasonably priced - relatively.
Yet another great video, Steve. The glimpse you gave us of the lake looks wonderful. I look forward to your video showing more of the area.
Couldn't wait for you to get to Montreux, know the station and area very well - lived in Montreux for 6 yrs from 1976. It's the place i love the most, absolutely stunning
Brilliant film Steve, well done. Switzerland looks stunning 👍
Well done Steve! What a marathon effort. Good we could come along with you.
Amazing how busy all these trains were - people constantly on the move for whatever reasons.
Yes - in this digital age it often surprises me.
A proper rail system with a convenient, dependable schedule will get used.
@@telecasterbearyou beat me to it!
@@robertp.wainman4094 So many things you cannot do "digitally".
Great video! Well done Steve for completing the challenge within 24 hours without stretching the cost too far. It brings back a lot of happy memories of train journeys from Paris to Switzerland and Italy.
What a nail biter, Steve. To make it there with one minute left was amazing. As always, I am impressed with your stamina and your ability to weave through unknown train stations. A unique and great video journey. Thanks, again!
Haha, excellent! You're a bloody legend, Steve!
Steve thank you for all the entertainment and information you provided to us week in week out. Top bloke 👍🏻 I'm joining your patreon 😊
Well done Steve! That was quite a challenge and you came through it victoriously! I don't blame you for flying home.
You were tuckered out crossing the finish line, and deserved a comfortable ride home up in the clouds. Onya mate!
Never doubted you’d make it mate congrats and enjoy👍
Wow , what a challenge ! I am guessing the worst part , other than stressing about train times , finding platforms was the hanging about in London . It would be so much better if Eurostar ran trains through the night , though I’m guessing the local hotels wouldn’t agree . Another great video , thank you .. looking forward to the next one .
Yeah, Kings Cross not the best place to be with nowhere to go! Ooer! 🥺🤭🙋
Saturday morning enjoying a coffee and a beautiful video of a train journey with breathtaking views.Thank you Steve
Steve it’s Paul from Kent well done 🎉 what a lovely place Switzerland is take care Paul
Love all your vlogs Steve, can't wait for the next.
I am travelling from the Netherlands to Switserland by train almost every year. It is TOP. Nice video again, Steve. I guess you could have done this well under 15 hours but than it would have been pretty boring, with fast connections both in London and Paris, with an underground running RER line D in Paris (with which you can get a 20 minutes connection between Paris Nord and Paris Gare de Lyon). But than you also have to book it really in advance because of the prices.... Last minute bookings are so expensive nowadays. As you say in the video: it absolutely is crazy, in Britain even more so as on the continent.
I was really nervous for you, but congrats on making it 👏
A great journey and well done for making it in time, hope you have a great days rest and a good look around tomorrow. Stay safe and cheers.
Well done. All the best for the video.
Steve, you stirred up my fond memories of the same places in London and journey to Paris by Eurostar ....we had a wonderful time , my better-half and kid ....wonderful ....Please keep churning . Train jurney excites me a lot. Because I have a famility background in it, one side of the parents.
Maybe some more of these challenges .Perth UK to Perth Australia? Now. that would be a challenge Steve. I enjoyed your FAQ in today's video. All the best from Australia.
direct flight from Heathrow with Qantas, takes away some of the fun though!!
Train videos from you are all the BEST mate!!! Love it 🏴🫶
I love how competitively you take these challenges. I think most of us don't care if you made it or not we just love to watch your travels.....

What a great trip, Steve. Can’t wait to see the next one. Montreux looks beautiful. Well done for completing your challenge! 😊🇬🇧
How fun! Can't wait to see what challenge you set to Nonstop Eurotrip now :)
👀👀👀
What a fun adventure! I have gone to Gare Du Nord and it was nice to see it again. As a woman, I would not have liked being at the closed train stations in London at those wee hours. The HST’s are very sleek. Thank you for this video!
Be careful Steve. You'll catch the Swiss bug. An amazing place Expensive though.
Brilliant.that was some challenge and you made it.your video's get more exciting and this one was surely that.looking forward to seeing the walk around the next one.thank you 🚄✈️
My third or fourth time watching this now. Fair play to you, very well done. 🏴
You secured some decent ticket prices there Steve. I guess UK train tickets are generally OK if you book in advance. Buy on the day you get shafted. I live 40 miles from London and pay £37 off peak return to London. You paid that from Edinburgh.
Montreux is very nice, but only 40 km south is Martigny which is spectacular.
Steve Marsh - the man in seat 47... or seat 76... or the vestibule... Another great video. The first time we were on a Swiss train it was late. I think it's just a rumour about their efficiency.
What a fun challenge. Glad everything worked except for you getting some sleep on the trains. Hope you had a great rest after this interesting trip.
And I love Nonstop Eurotrip. He does some interesting adventures too.
He does doesn't he 🤭
Cool video again Steve! Nice challenge as well. And those few minutes you filmed in Switzerland just make me realize how much I miss going there! It has been way too long, what a stunning place with perfect trains!
Montreux is lovely. The junction for my favourite Swiss village
Great trip Steve with some stunning scenery at the end.

I was shouting to you: take the metro! But you made it in Paris. Wow what a journey!

Paris is somewhere I've never been so thanks for sharing. Through your videos we get to see different and interesting places!
Love the old school Casio watch Steve ⌚ They always remind me of John Candy in planes, trains and automobiles ✈️🚂🚗
Brilliant video as always. We went to Lausanne in January and visited the olympic museum as the IOC is based there, absolutely brilliant museum and think you would love it🏅
The next day we got a train from Lausanne to Chur and from there an epic train to St Moritz, the scenery was very special. From there though it got even better as we boarded the bernina train to Tirano in Italy, absolutely stunning and well worth a video. All regular trains as well so didn't cost a lot either 🚂🏔️
The next day we took a train along Lake Como to Lecco from Tirano where we took in the shores of Lake Como before changing train to Bergamo for a flight back to the UK. Highly recommended trip for sure.
Keep up the great work, we have been spoilt this week with 4 videos including last Saturday's ♥️
Another great trip, thanks Steve. I do love Switzerland and Swiss trains and their integrated public transport system plenty of fine trips with wonderful places and spectacular views to be had if you want to do just Switzerland
Excellent challenge and video. Liked the canopy roof at Vallorbe. Some great contrasts, too. Can anyone else remember when trains didn’t constantly talk to you and normal people could afford the fares?
You are a legend! Well done Steve.
Excellent photography is picture perfect. Thanks for the virtual race against time. I visited Lausanne and Montreux in 2010 and loved it.
