Amazing views. One of the things I really like about your videos, Steve, is your way of making us feel like we're experiencing the trip, ourselves. The simple acts of watching footsteps, peering into the train window from outside, the help wanted sign... without sacrificing the beautiful views. I love what you do. Thanks, again, for sharing.
My observation too. I couldn't figure out what it was that makes these special. I just returned from Scotland, England, Netherlands, Germany and Belgium and realised that Steve shows you what it is really like. What it is like to check into strange hotels, how to buy tickets from machines that have all the instructions in Dutch and refuse to accept your credit cards, how to navigate foreign hotels, trains and ferries where the rules of navigation are known to locals but not to us. Steve truly is a champion at this!
I loved this video as it reminded me of a once in a lifetime trip I did with my son to Zermatt in 2010. We had a week of skiing and boarding in absolute paradise. The train ride up was fabulous as were the trains that actually ran up the ski runs! This was in Feb and March 2010. I was amazed at how many people took the train to the top of the mountain that did not ski or board. Standing at the top, we had a 360 view including Zermatt and Mont Blanc. A life changing experience. Thank you Steve.
Steve - I didn't see in your video, but did you attempt to use the circular stairs when you returned from the viewing platform? This must be spectacular viewing in the summer too.
I haven't watched a Steve blog for two or three weeks and I definitely needed to be reminded why he is my absolutely favorite travel writer. I love the fact that he doesn't travel on the Orient Express, or first class on hideously expensive flights, whinging about the food. He travels like you and I are able to do on our limited budgets and NEVER complains unless there is absolute justification. This is a good man.
I was feeling really rubbish, upset, fed up and I watched that and it totally changed my mood. That's why I watch your videos Steve, they brighten my day. What a stunning train jouney, I was just gobsmacked. Thank you for what you do.
I went on my first solo trip a few years back. I took a night train (my first time on that too) from Hamburg to Basel and then Basel down to the Alps to visit a friend. On my way to Geneva to go home, on my friends recommendation, I spent the day in Montreux and went to the sights mentioned in Smoke on the Water. Anyway, the point is it was during a bit of a tricky time in my life and when the train approached Montreux and I got my first glimpse of Lake Geneva it very literally took breath away. I've never felt that before. When I physically approached the lake itself I could feel myself shaking and when I finally got there I cried my eyes out. It's a beauty I have never experienced before or since. Even though the day was pretty overcast it was such an incredibly stunning place to be in. I'll never forget it. Thanks for bringing back some wonderful memories, Steve. Glad you enjoyed it.
What an amazing journey with such beautiful views. Bravo to the people who built the rail line and stations along the way. Thanks for leaving the actual sound of the train in the video, it made it much more authentic.
@@freddieqmercury5961 I mind when was in scotland (Glasgow) one of my Uncles praised a lot of things as "no bad" but one got a "Rilly! Rilly! It's no bad!"
That is a point I have often wondered about. I think there needs to be a BBC / ABC channel that airs this stuff and pays the content creator. Seriously, how can someone like Steve on his pitiful budget, continue to churn out documentary content of this standard when the big TV stations continue to churn out recycled porridge and call it entertaining. Someone needs to give them a wake up call.
Montreux is one of the very rare railway stations with 3 track gauges! Standard gauge for SBB trains, metre gauge to Zweisimmen (and further to Interlaken) and 800mm for the Rochers de naye rack railway
I once 'had' to go to Montreux for work and couldn't believe the beauty of it. I've been back several times since.... so glad my favourite TH-camr has been on my favourite (cog) train.
@steve-marsh You really did it justice - not an easy task to film through the window of that cog train whilst it twists around the mountain. Your videos are great 👍
This must be the most scenic and beautiful journey you have shown us on your videos. Absolutely loved it , but please stop walking so close to the edges my heart was is my mouth. Thanks Steve as Switzerland is on my bucket list.
Catching up on your past travels.I love trains and snow. It looked beautiful.A hot chocolate at the top would have been fab. I have the lurgy at the moment, so watching your videos is ideal.
I'm on about my 20th video of yours now Steve and I've really enjoyed every single minute of every one of them. Really interesting places you visit, you give us some great stories and historical insight on camera and on screen. Above all, you're a really great presenter along with Alicja who is a delight also. I'm so glad I clicked on that first video a few weeks ago. I'm looking forward to watching many more. Btw, the views you shot from the very first seconds of this video were beautiful. I really love this channel mate. Thanks so much. I know you must put a lot of effort into shooting & editing these and it's greatly appreciated. Cheers Steve 👏👏👏
I love that Switzerland have these small, special built railways. This one is running on 800mm gauge with the cog in the middle, and on 850V DC electrification. It is almost a cross between a tram and a mountain goat. 😁
OMG a Freddie Mercury hotel never knew that .Always learn something new everyday. I am a huge Freddie Mercury and Queen fan so this so cool to know 😥❤️
Steve, I can’t think of a single video of yours that I didn’t enjoy. I hold other vlogs I see to your standards. I’ve been watching you for quite some time, you saved me during the pandemic lockdown. Thank you for all you do…always appreciated.
Really good to hear you mention that this, and many like it, are far from being just tourist or sightseeing trains. They're an important part of the infrastructure for people living on the hillsides high above the valley floors. Not just for commuting and shopping but the things that look like cages at the read of the train are used for transporting household appliances and bulky goods to the locals.
Breathtaking scenery! You did a fantastic filming the ride up, keeping the camera aligned vertically really shows how steep the climb is. Thanks for sharing your journey.
Those views were fantastic, some of the best ever. I hate it when I hear someone say money cannot buy happiness. Maybe it can't in the metaphysical sense, but it would buy you a ticket on that little cog railway.
You take us places we’re not likely to visit and go on rail lines that are not run the of the mill! You give me the collywobblies when you (or the camera) looks over into a ravine i almost can’t bear to watch but I know you don’t like heights either so gives me reassurance that you won’t take risks - bless you for bringing us another great video.

Steve, the biggest bonus for your day (and trip in total) was the weather. Having warm sunshine and such good visability was very fortunate indeed, it could have been raining & windy with low cloud which would have spoilt the trip to no end.
Way back in the late 1960s the snow was so deep at Mt. Rainier USA, Paradise side that one had to enter the park ranger station by stepping down to the 3rd floor balcony. This excursion is my absolute favorite of all the adventures you've been on - that is that I've watched so far. Keep up the great work.
This video brings it all back to me and when my late husband was here,so many good memories, lovely Tunnels to walk through, try there Soups fantastic and tasty bread,😊
Those houses by the lake look good but eventually landslides or erosion will take them down. Switzerland is a truly beautiful country, I have only passed through there once in the 70's, but the views are unforgettable....
Freddie Mercury Hotel, awesome, Freddie loved Montreaux and owned a beautiful home there I believe named the Duck House, he wrote one of his final songs in Montreaux called A Winters Tale which included views of Lake Geneva in the video and the town has a statue of Freddie in the center, great video as always Steve !!!
We have crossed Canada on the Canadian, been on the Flam in Norway and travelled to Bavaria through the mountains, without doubt this video is the most spectacular scenery ever👍👍

Steve - I did not notice any treasure hunters....as the snow melts, watch out for "holes" in the snow, caused by sun melting through to coins, and best of all watches dropped by skiers. I did very well during an early holiday in Switzerland, it paid for a couple of evenings out, And yes, did find a watch too, but not an Omega!! Great video!!

Hi Steve, loved this video having stayed in Montreux three times. It brought back great memories. Dunno if your aware but, in Summer, they run stream trains from Caux to the Rochers de Naye. I’ve travelled on one in the past. Keep travelling and posting. 😄👍. By the way you were walking on a ski run, a red run defined by the red pole. The etiquette is don’t or walk on the edge. It was safe, though, because there were no skiers around.
Bloody marvellous thanks Steve. I came down from an early morning hike up in the snow above Hakuba in Japan to find this video of yours available. I swear your content just keeps getting better and better!
Wow Steve. That was some trip. Loved the trains, mountains, scenery, everything (apart from the edge of the cliff paths). Here's to the next ones. Cheers.
A fantastic journey up and down the mountain and a truly magical view from the top. I've watched this video several times and never tire of it. Thankyou Steve

I'm so in love with Scotland that I forget how magnificent Switzerland and the Alps are. You ae expanding my horizons. You do such a good job. Yay Steve!
Thanks for sharing your alone time in such a splendid place. We have a few wee hills here in the South Island of New Zealand, but nothing like that magnificent view. I just wish I could experience some of the places you go. Love the fact we just get the sounds of your journeys, no unnecessary music. Cheers, keep up the great work.
Thanks so much for sharing and nothing short of breath taking views. I'm definitely going there on my next visit to Switzerland. You have to visit ( if you haven't already) Grindelwald first , stunning views as well. Go off season for a less crowded experience.
Looks like you found another beauty, Steve. Agree, the trade-off between going in winter/early spring (empty, cheaper, but no hiking) and summer (access to trails but more expensive, swarming with tourists) is a real conundrum isn't it?! Random observations: Buvette de Jaman is a cute, unique station. Caux Palace smacks of Wes Anderson. Cheers!

What a place and to have it all to yourself, what a treat! That’s got to be one of the worlds best railway journeys. Thanks for taking us along.
A pleasure mate! I'm so glad I decided to do this one despite being tired!
Thanks so much for sharing and nothing short of breath taking views. I'm definitely going there on my next visit to Switzerland. You have to visit ( if you haven't already) Grindelwald first , stunning views as well. Go off season for a less crowded experience.
Awesome video with fantastic views
Looks like you found another beauty, Steve. Agree, the trade-off between going in winter/early spring (empty, cheaper, but no hiking) and summer (access to trails but more expensive, swarming with tourists) is a real conundrum isn't it?! Random observations: Buvette de Jaman is a cute, unique station. Caux Palace smacks of Wes Anderson. Cheers!
What a stunningly beautiful Video. A wonderful channel . Thank you Steve
So glad you did that for us. Heights and narrow tunnels a big no no for me. Wonderful scenery.
