I´m a new W40k player, and I had chosen Custodes. This helps me a lot, since I only bought a battle patrol to start to build a 2k army. A tabletop game would be of much help, since I'm going for hybrid of your lists.
Cool vid! I'm having a hard time not taking a 5 man + capt Allarus squad in an infantry Shield Host list to take advantage of Panoptispex and free strat, although it becomes hard to fit both that and the Draxus squad. Also thinking about testing a 6 man Venatari in addition to 2x3 mans to punch hard in an important flank. In my first list I'll probably only run 2x5 wardens with champ and Valerian to leave room for more testing.
Good video, very informative, would love to see some examples you were talking about, Also ,amybe put some pics up instead of the wall of text, that you were reading, these pics could coincide with what you were talking about, just some ideas for the future, otherwise great content matey. Please take my comment, with the sincerity i feel whilst writing, I am not trying ti diss your work, only trying to come with some constructive criticism.
I was wondering about mixing up the text with some images and such just to break it up. Thank you for the tips. The channel won't get better without some constructive criticism!
@HubtownHammer I just bought the old edition and the current edition of the battle box. I want to build an army with (x) Venatari and one Grav Tank, Callidus Assassin and Kyria Draxus. How should I proceed?
Wow that is awesome. You are set for all the core codex units. It would be good to get at least one of each Shield-Captain Variants ( They are made from the same kits as the regular unit such as the Allarus. So you dont need to go buy more custodes) Next question is how many Venatari do you want. You gave enough models to make some choices when building your list. I hate to say it. It's also not 100% of the time, but most of the time, if you're going to take one Grav-tank you are better off with 2. But one is a great place to start. You could also run all infantry lists too. If you have any more questions or I didn't quite answer your question let me know!
@@HubtownHammer ok, you already have me a path!! I will do the second list, if one grav tank is not enough, and 2 it’s ideal. Then the list is made! Thanks for showing me the light!
Tried saggitarium and grav carrier combo and i was so disapointing. I think im gonna try some ideas of this list but swap the wardens by allarus so there is more variety.
I just started buying Custodes models to start my third army. This video was really helpful in understand their use better. I'd love to see a video of you playing the list (specifically the grav tank list). Thanks!
Just played a game Sunday night where dropping my Callidus Assassin to stop an overwatch would have saved me so much trouble and thinking! I had her there but didn't even think to use her for that. Was holding her for a melee battle that never came, ha.
Is it possible to run Draxus and the Assassin at the same time? I use the New Recruit 40k list builder and it limits me to one or the other. Just wondering if its legal lol.
List builder you are using is wrong. I use the official app and it is 100% legal. Getting this question a lot I feel bad for people who these apps have nerfed their lists I have to wonder if the people asking have their lists set at the 1k limit or something since you can only have one in a 1k game
That is a sign you have not changed your Battle Size in the Configuration block on NewRecruit. Towards the top just above where you select the Detachment, change it to 2000pts and you're good to go.
First of all, your tutorials are great. Really useful for a new player like me. Question: castellan mark is still good? I was thinking to take 2x2 allarus unit and just one captain to activate the enchantment and use some free stratagems (i got only six allarus).
I got an a bit off topic question. Is ist possible to take 3x6 Venatari an put them lol in reserves? I thought there is a points limit for that but I have seen it some time in some lists?
You can yes. Deepstrike Reserve is different than the normal 500 point limit strategic Reserve. But can not have more than half our army in Reserve or Deepstrike Reserve
I’ve been playing custodes since the last 3 months of 9th. I have never been beaten so bad as I have the past 2-3 games. I have a pretty good win rate against 15-20 different opponents of all skill levels, maybe 75-80% win rate before the new detachments. I can no longer get points. Every game is either kill a unit before it kills me and not get points, or sacrifice a unit to get 2 or 3 points. Custodes are so squishy for their points. I cannot figure out how to get points. I’ve even played a list with 24 sisters for trading and getting secondaries. My go turn is usually turn 3 also but man, if something doesn’t work you just get swarmed.
Custodes have been a strange army in 10th. We go from beginner friendly to one mistake, and you lose army. New Custodes plays quite a bit different. Even with all these positive changes. We still can't really take a hit. The datasheets are really good but I find if we get charged first and haven't set up a counter charge we kids just crumble. Our units are so small even when maxed out. Opponents crash into us with 10 man + units, the quantity of attacks is usually just too much. We really need to be thinking turns ahead to set up some high dmg plays to keep things off our objective holder's. Keep at it though. I got much better with Custodes playing when they were awful than when I just face rolled Opponents.
(Originally for reddit but I get flagged by a bot for being "to new to reddit") Alright imma start with this. Yes. I know 3d print and Etsy exists but I'd rather not. What if I just got a box of custodian guard and put some wings on them and put the spears on them. Think many people would complain? (Casual play only) any better idea? I originally thought "I mean jetpack intercessors are close enough" but I feel like some people would complain. But I do like how they look. I am only a month and a half into the table top part of the hobby. Also I have searched for the actual kit. No one is selling for a reasonable price. No one's selling unpainted. Just a headache.
I think either would work. Especially for casual play. I think they would look awesome. If anyone complains about you kitbashing some genuine gw models into Venetari. (Even more so with the amount of work you are doing) That person is not worth playing. Develop some sudden "diarrhea" and concede. The great thing is 99% of the players in casual Warhammer games will compliment your awesome kitbash and be more than happy to accept them as Venatari proxies
obvious weakness is non-los, that will delete prosecutors guarding home objective. I think trajan with guard is much better than draxus and asassin. I would also put 2 prosecutors and 2 rhinos
Sorry, I have to disagree with a lot of that. If the enemy does have indirect (which a lot of armies don't), you just sticky the home objective with Custodian Guard unit first turn. Trajan is a showdow of his former self. He only ignores hit modifiers and has no fights first with his moment shackle. Draxus has a anti infantry 4+ dev wounds 2 dmg 4 shots gun then her psychic attacks. All that Paired with the Guard datasheet is much better utility unit than Trajaan and guard. The assassin can turn off your opponents ability to use stratagems. That is very valuable into certain armies that have fights on death or even -1 dmg. Certain stratagems can wreck Custodes. Being able to turn those off or make them more expensive can win us games.
@vanlyfe2898 Trajan only ignores hit modifiers now. He can use the 2+ invulnerable moment shackle, but that is only damage reduction for him. I played him last week. Not the on the board threat he used to be with no fights first or ignore all modifiers, which makes me sad, I love Trajann
Interesting not to have terminators in the list! I do love the idea of running 3 warden squads though haha. Would love to see some love for talons though!!
The Venatari having Lance on their melee weapon helps them compare to the damage output of the Allarus with the much better speed and utility. Don't get me wrong, though I agree Allarus are great in this detachment, too.
Love both lists, I just wish GW made venetari in plastic already! Do you think an all infantry list that does not use forge world is competitively viable? My immediate thoughts are you can sub out the 3 venetari squads for 2 more 4 man guard squads plus another blade champ for one of them. With the extra 25 points you could either drop the enhancements for another prosecutor squad or fit in a witchseeker squad by dropping the callidus assassin for an eversor which will still help with secondaries.
Custoduan Guard would be a fine replacement. I do like Allarus in Shield Host as well. They hit like trucks. It is the great thing about Shield Host we can make different looking lists and still me quite competitive.
You can definitely play full infantry without FW, I'd add an Allarus brick with a captain to take advantage of Panoptispex and buffed free strat ability.
All infantry is viable until you run into gun platforms. Custodes suffer without the Grav tanks since they force your opponent to respect firing lanes and your big guns.
Unfortunately i only have 1 unit of venatari. I want more though. Ik its not super meta too but i want a telemon lol. Also whats the best time to use the wardens fnp?? I feel like i keep messing this up.
@KampferNL I totally agree. I was really hoping we would have more choices other than Wardens in the codex, but we lost so much overall survivability that we need the Wardens in most lists.
Would love to see some gameplay!

Allarus Captain with Allarus terminator is an amazing unit.
This is a list I'm thinking about taking to a small GT. It has the Kyria+Guard combo, Allarus Terminators with Panoptispex, 2 squads of Venatari, and a Witchseeker and Callidus for scoring.
