- This video shows everything you need to know to be able to replace a bad wheel bearing hub assembly on your vehicle. If you have a 2004 Toyota Highlander 4x4, then this video is exactly what you need to know but it is pretty much the same job for any vehicle that has a wheel bearing hub assembly style. I show every tool, every process, every trick/tip, every step so you can feel confident to tackle this job yourself and learn some of the best tricks in the industry. It's better to find a good honest mechanic, pay cash, & bring cookies once a month even when you have no mechanical problems.

Thanks! I'm sure you could do it but the issue is whether the job requires heat to loosen stuck parts. Otherwise the job isn't too hard. You only learn by doing it yourself and that's how I learned. This is a fantastic video, I'm glad you showed that seized castle nut. If I were to add anything to this video, maybe a warning to folks working on older vehicles where wetting down the brakes is a MUST due to the potential of asbestos brake shoes. Also, keep those safety glasses on! Parts are replaceable, your eyes aren't! Love your videos, helped me with some issues I've been having with a 1968 GMC pickup 👍

Tackling this job in my Mazda. All the bolts came off easily, but the wheel bearing feels stuck on. Going to try beating at it a bit with a sledge. If I can’t do it then I’m just going to bring it into a shop. Not going to mess around this time and have to call a mobile mechanic.
Sometimes the bearing gets really rusted in and requires heat and a sledgehammer. There is also a hub puller that you mount and then smash with a hammer to get it to pop. Good luck!

Very very interesting and imformative, thank you so much. Can I ask, what do stores like yours do with the broken parts such as the old broken wheelbearing? How are they disposed or can they be repurposed for anything else?
Some parts you can return to get back your core charge but bearings are usually scrap. I collect scrap metal in a bin until it's full and then I put it in a vehicle that I'm going to scrap. Then they give us a bit of money for the scrap value. Thanks for the watch!

An broken engine would most likely be sent to an engine rebuilder or wrecking yard to be disassembled for used parts. There's lots of money in recycling used auto parts. Cheers!

Yeah this is one of if not the best trick for stubborn bolts/nuts.....heat
Some drums have a small, countersunk screw which you will have to undo to get the drum off.
Yup you're right, some do. They can be a pain to take out too when they're seized up. A little heat and an impact driver works wonders. Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel!
While candle wax will work some penetrating oils (seafoam deep creep comes to mind) do very well with heat and suck in a lot easier. I was doing the brakes on my 07 mustang and the slide pins were frozen in and mapp gas and seafoam got them moving. Still needed new ones of course but wax didn't even give a hint of going in. Saved me from having to buy a new caliper bracket.
Yeah it's about the same, just be careful not to start a fire spraying penetrating oils. Sometimes just the heat is all you need, the lube just prevents galling on the way out. Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel!
Be advised. When moving to a bigger tool, you need to make sure you have enough air supply. Ya gotta let the Big Dawg eat!
When I sold tools for Mac Tools, a customer wanted a 1" impact gun for big truck work. I delivered the tool, but he wouldn't buy the hose I had ordered for the gun. The following week he wanted to return the 1" Impact because it wasn't working right. I left him the 3/4" hose and fittings to set it up properly. When I asked him about it the next week, he said it scared him how much more power it had on the first hit.
That's a great tip and something that would totally slip by people's minds. That being said, in our shop we almost never use this 3/4" impact gun so probably a waste to get that set up in our shop. Thanks for the suggestion.

hey i need to replace my wheel bearing and i saw ur vid , my car has the same issue as this car but its only in one back wheel but i heard its better to do both back wheels, my car is a fwd . Is it really necessary to replace both ? and what are the consequences if i do only one
Yeah you are supposed to do both but I have done just one bearing sometimes. They both have the same amount of km on them so they usually wear out together. Sometimes if only one bearing is replaced, there can be issues with differential or transmission wear. Thanks for the watch!

It depends on the vehicle, some have wheel bearing hub assemblies, some have pressed in bearings, some have bearings that can be hammered in and out, and some require a slide hammer to remove too. You'll have to take a look. Thanks for the watch!
You make it easy,How much does a job like this cost?
It all depends on the vehicle and whether or not it's seized on. Parts and labour could easily be $1,000. Lots of savings to do it yourself though. Thanks for the watch!
great videos but i noticed that when you reinstall the axle nut appeared that you over tightened, won't That damage the bearing.? if not torqued properly.? my opinion.
It depends on the vehicle and their torque specifications. If they are low enough, you can get someone to hold the brakes and torque it with a torque wrench. I just did a Mazda Tribute the other day and it was only 100 ft-lbs. Some vehicles are quite high like several hundreds of ft-lbs. So in a lot of cases, an impact is ok especially if it's only a couple hits after the axle nut bottoms. Best advice is torque to proper specs though. Hope this helps. 1) Does the impact wrench has a +/- 4% accuracy rate, which is the industry standard?
2) Is the torque on the impact wrench adjustable in 1-foot-pound increments or is it just high, medium and low? if It's the latter, it's not accurately torqued. This is how you get premature bearing failure.

Would you only replace the bad bearing, the axle, or all 4 at a time?
You are supposed to change both bearings on an axle but I have changed just one if a person's budget is tight and the axle isn't connected to the other side. I wouldn't change all 4 though because the way life goes, you'll end up selling or having it written off before you would need to do the next set. Thanks for the watch and the good question!

You know your job. I just changed wheel bearings but I can feel the car doesn’t pull as it was and it runs jerky with still some whooo noise that made me take it in for service. What should I do?
Hard to say but perhaps fasteners weren't torqued enough and are coming loose? You could lift the car and check for wheel looseness again. Good luck!
Where can I find the torque specs for certain bolts it you don’t have the manual or online
If you can see the lines or the numbers on the head of the bolts then you can look up the torque charts online. You'll need to know the grade of the bolts and the diameter plus the pitch. How do you find the torque settings for each specific vehicle?
Service manuals, owner's manual, Alldata or Mitchell on demand, Chilton's manuals.....lots of places. As a very rough estimate, you can add up the lights and times it by 20 ft-lbs and that'll give you a setting for your torque wrench. Thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel!
A couple of M8 bolts driven into those threaded holes on the rotor will pop that rotor off without any hammering.
Yeah if your rotor has them you can totally use them. Watch out if you have internal drum brakes though as they can break springs if the shoes are worn into grooves. Thanks for the watch!
A 7' breaker bar will definitely work.
Maybe but you'd also need something else to stop the bearing from moving. If ya got heat though.....heat works wonders. Thanks for the watch!
@wayofthewrench Yea when using a floor jack to lift the car and with no air tools, Ive put a piece of wood, 2x4 under one of the studs between the stud and the ground so it wouldn't spin. Worked pretty good for what was available. But yea heating it up helps a lot!
Remember that you're also trying to get the axle nut off with no damage to the CV axle threads or else that's getting changed too. Heating generally has better success with that too. Thanks for the info!
shot in the dark, but i'm pretty sure the rear hub bearing on my 2000 ford mustang is bad, and whenever i search up a replacement part all that pops up is stuff for the front, what should i search for?

How to determine if shocks are a contributing factor to steering problems at speed. Maybe should do both jobs.
Shocks can have a jounce or bounce test at each of the corners to see if the bouncing settles quickly or continues for a bit. It should stop immediately. You can also listen for noises and check for oil coming out from the rubber boot. Cracks in the boot or heavy rust with missing steel on the shock is no good. Generally shocks don't affect steering unless they are really bad and the wheel is bouncing/loosing contact with the road. Hope this helps and welcome to the channel!

Cool video. Just curious do you step the lugs when you tighten them? I have seen where some people torque to half of the spec, do the star pattern that way and then the full spec, going around in star pattern. Thanks
Thanks Catch11! I do but not really. What I usually do is tighten in a star pattern with a ratchet and snug them up. Then I set a torque wrench and do the final torque in a star pattern followed by another tighten at final torque in a circular pattern to ensure none got missed or the first one not as tight. This is already better than most mechanics who just use torque sticks on an impact gun.
I save my multiple passes with increasing torque when I'm installing things that have multiple bolts and have gaskets like intake manifolds and heads. Thanks for the watch, cheers!

@@wayofthewrench That brings me to the question of how you check them properly? Want to make sure I do this correctly. Btw, if the lugs were over tightened at some point and there seems to be no issues with rotors or anything, can you simply loosen and retorque to the right spec or is there more to it. Again, appreciate the knowledge.
To check or recheck lugnut torque, set the torque wrench to your correct torque and attempt to tighten the lugnut. If it doesn't move the lugnut and the torque wrench clicks, then it is correct and check the rest. If the lugnut moves while attempting to torque it with the properly set torque wrench, then it has loosened/ or was not tightened enough last time. If the torque was not done by you before, then you have no idea if it is too tight but if any damage was done (stripped studs/warped rotors) it has already been done and you won't know until you go to take them off next time. I find this all the time because people don't own a torque wrench so they tighten them too much because they stood on a lugnut wrench and sometimes they are too loose because they guessed with a ratchet.
Why do manufacturers fail to apply anti seize to wheel nuts etc during in the factory ? It would make repair easier .
They don't put antiseize on wheel lug nuts because they are engineered to a certain torque spec that is dry.....no lube. The other reason they don't use antiseize is that if they used $1 of lube on a car that they make 1,000,000 cars in that year.....that just cost $1,000,000. It all boils down to money in the end. Can you change the bearing itself rather to open and change all the hub assembly and this will save money and time.
Not this type. There are 3 types: bearing hub assemblies, press in type, and thrust style with inner and out races. This type is a complete unit and cannot be fixed....just replaced. Thanks for the watch!

Lol, yeah maybe I should but old habits are hard to break. I've always been a "hands on" guy who just got his hands dirty and enjoyed working with his hands. Lol gloves are an additional strength and protector . I accidently stabbed myself with a flat head without gloves.
Glove is just for protection, it doesn't determined how good or bad you are

Im stumped. I hear the low rumbling noise in my Accord but I checked all 4 wheels for play and noise and all I hear is the break pads, no play on any wheel.
it can make noise but not have play, especially in the beginning. I would also watch my road testing a bad bearing video for other tips to properly diagnose a bad bearing. Thanks for the watch!

The star wheel adjuster does not rotate, the rotors adjustor plug does. Why are you aligning it?

@wayofthewrench that was the axle nut was it not? Even after getting the axle nut off on every car I've ever worked on, the bearing assembly is still just seized to the knuckle. I always have to fight it
