It was back in 2021 that I produced a two-part series diving into the world of public domain VHS distributors and the content that they put out. I had a personal connection to that one in that I focused on cartoons as the content covered in that series and my childhood was full of public domain VHS tapes. This time around we are fast forwarding to my early 20s and an a dive into the world of public domain DVD distributors. And, like with cartoons, this one also had a personal bend.
During my second year of college I took an American Film class and discovered the world of film noir, a style of film prominent in the 1940s and 50s and know for it's dark shadowy mood, often consisting of unsympathetic characters and painting a bleak picture of the world we live in. Dying to see more of these noir films I started by, unknowingly at the time, purchasing multiple collections of such films put out by public domain distributors. I now own hundreds of noirs, but it really began with those public domain collections.
In this film I focus less on diving into the dark practices of public domain distributors, which I focused on in my VHS series, and more focus strictly on the quality of what was being put out. Who are these contemporary companies putting out such content? Are they better than they were in the VHS days? What types of reviews to public domain film noir collections get? And so on.
I even spend the majority of the latter half of this film doing a quality comparison analysis of the films specifically from my collections to see which collections were putting out better quality content. To no surprise, there were mixed results. But if you're into film noir, Hollywood/Old Hollywood, public domain history/oddities, DVD history, etc. this should be right up your alley. Enjoy!
