      There's a lot of misinformation in this video. At some point he even says "everyone will be able to sell a doll and call it Barbie". No, copyright =/= trademark. You can't even make a Mickey Mouse cartoon and call it Mickey Mouse. Trademarks can be renewed indefinitely. The character designs and stories will enter the public domain. Names, titles and logo's won't enter.

    It's so weird. Mickey, the most iconic and famous Disney character of all, is now a figure that the company can no longer claim ownership to. Stranger still that Disney, a studio that made its name on adapting public domain stories, like fairy tales, is now old enough to make public domain characters of its own 🤔

      Public Domain is very important 'cause it allows/gives content creators, filmmakers, animators, game developers and artists the liberties on creating something that they are passionate about, making something new with their own set of vision and show how much they actually do care and love the IP we grow up with. Without it, we wouldn't have gotten the stuff people would see. Yes, I'm aware that they're some greedy bastards out there who might take advantage of this by creating a cashgrab project for the sake of gaining money but NOT everyone are like that; I know there are other content creators out there who want to create a project that they have dreamed and show how much they actually do care and love the IP we grow up with endless possibilities and opportunities that indie filmmakers/animators can explore. Also, Please! Change this copyright timeframe and give artists the freedom they deserve.

    In 100 years from now, you’ll also be able to make a movie like Who Framed Roger Rabbit again. It was hard to make due to the creators needing licensing from Disney, Warner Brothers etc. to use their copyrighted characters. But it will be a lot easier to make by the turn of the 22nd century, since all the characters that were in the movie will be in the public domain by then.

  • @RoninCatholic
    @RoninCatholic 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

    One thing about things entering the public domain: If they actually ever DO enter the public domain and the copyright deadline is extended again afterward, characters don't retroactively GO OUT OF the public domain. If we extended it to 200 years the estates of the original author of Pinocchio doesn't retroactively receive rights to all Pinocchio adaptations, and if we extend it to 300 years the descendants Jonathan Swift don't suddenly receive royalties for all Gulliver's Travels adaptations and interpretations. Mickey, Felix, and Oswald are all permanent fixtures of the public storytelling culture as much as Peter Pan, King Arthur, and Robin Hood already were.
    For example, a lot of superheroes from up through the 1960s lapsed into public domain before or between the Disney extensions, basically the only characters from the Golden Age of Comics who didn't were the ones actively considered worth protecting by Marvel and DC of the time. There are characters who have canonically interacted with heroes like Superman and Batman who are public domain despite having been initially developed for their publisher after those primary icons, and there are at minimum _two_ blond versions of Thor (one a transformed human who takes up Thor's name as a pseudonym while granted the god's powers) that were concurrent with the Marvel incarnation we know and love.

    I should note that while the official Garfield strip won’t be public domain till 2074, the original prototype strip simply titled “Jon” was published without a copyright label, meaning that this very early iteration of Garfield is technically in the public domain on account of it being published little over a year before the automatic copyright renewal act was established. So yes… Garfield is public domain to a certain degree, but only the very earliest incarnation (the one that lacks stripes).

      Don't get too excited. While Disney hasn't put up much of a fuss about copyright this time. Mostly because they realized it would be a losing game this time, they totally still can go after people for using Classic Mickey using Trademark laws, which dont expire. All they would have to show is that the classic Mickey design is important to the Disney trademark and branding and I mean it's not like they've used the opening to Steam Boat Willie as the opening scrawl for a bunch of thier movies ..Oh wait.

    About Kimba the white Lion and the Lion King thing. Other then the bare basics of Lion cub becoming a king and bunch of minor things, Kimba and Lion King have barely anything to do with each other. Simba certainly didn’t always carry Musfasa’s corpse around, and yeah that’s a thing with Kimba.

      Lion King would be a very different movie if Simba carried Mufasa's corpse around.

      @@ContentFreeTime Kimba’s (or more accurately Leo’s) also in a much different story: he was born at sea, comes to his father’s homeland and makes friends with other animals. Later on, he gains a family and then passes away on a mountain.

    Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I've heard that for works published after 1978 the copyright doesn't last 95 years, but 120

      According to copyright.gov, "The term of copyright protection in a work made for hire is 95 years from the date of publication or 120 years from the date of creation, whichever expires first," which seems to still apply to works published after 1978

    It will also be interesting when video games start becoming public domain and you can legally play their roms or make legal cartridge copies. But the oldest game consoles roms (Channel F and Atari) still have almost 50 years to go yet.
