PORTLAND: THEN AND NOW
PATREON: www.patreon.com/exploreoregon
Coming off of an admittedly tough start to the new year I didn't know if I was going to put anything out this week but I got the urge to go out and, despite the wind, I was able to do just that.
So here for you is a fresh installment in my Portland: Then and Now series where I ventured down to the historic epicenter of the Lents area, which is the vicinity of SE 92nd and Foster Road. Through reviving the area, less than a decade ago this location changed drastically making for a nice spot to do one of these episodes. I also included at the end of this one some footage I shot in December 2016 of this same area shortly before much of this change began. Despite the wind... I hope y'all enjoy!

Using a beautiful old school to accommodate classes while kids’ actual schools are being renovated is way, way better than demolishing them. Proof that Portland isn’t SoCal. Not yet anyway

I think its more likely Evans was a gay man and he and his boarder got drunk one night and he made a move on his young boarder. The young man left and stewed for a few days. He then got paeanoid townspeople would spread rumors of him being gay as well if they found out. So, he returned and shot Evans. Now that is a plausible story but probably still not true. Makes more sense than some treasure hunter showing up randomly and saying give me the gold or I will kill ya.

11:26 nobody said it was an accident. 1989, Jan 14 it airs. They never found her or received any leads. Going through casefiles, it will have a note in the file it was distributed to media and they aired the poster. Then when they read that in 1991 they redistribute it to the media and repeat the same ad a second time. Also: we don't know if it only aired twice. We only have documentation of it airing twice. We don't know how many times they ran that missing poster. You think it's so weird and unsettling because you weren't alive back then and understood how low quality our TVs and photos were. 15:08 its not fabricated. The archives that archive these news footages, and the broadcast is not going to edit things. After the fact they're going to take the piece of broadcast and air it in its full glory. The archive people don't know anything about Joanna Lopez because their job is not law enforcement and missing an endangered children. Their job is to be archival people. The phone number goes back to commander Mayo with the Cook county youth division an actual real dude who is on a task force about violent crimes against children. This is a real case it just might be cold.

some areas in portland got better but many of them have gotten worse drug addicts float in from portland down to other areas via the expanding bus routes. when I was still working at a grocery store id see people loaded up on meth come in from the bus routes right into our store and they start yelling, screaming and then they hole up in the bathrooms and start lighting it up in there.

The only two things I think you missed in Downtown Lents are that Ramona Street was originally (before the 1929-1930 Great Renumbering) Beumauer Street, which is stamped in the sidewalk, and that the U-Haul on Foster is the first ever U-Haul retail location. Great video, Steve! Hope to see you on the streets.

So funny I worked at the copper penny in the 90's 😅 🙂 That place went way underground and had a huge basement. The owner Saki had his office down there. He had it done up all fancy with red carpet. He was a nice old guy and he hired me personally. He was also the president of the boys and girls club at one time.🙂 That store that was an antique shop was owned by a couple that was friends with Saki's family and they came in and had coffee every day. I worked in there restaurant as a server. I was to young to waitresses in the bar though.😅 oh memories

Thanks for the good video. Good to preserve even these old structures that deserved to go - replaced by nice business below living above modern style buildings.Yes, the New Copper Penny was notorious. A classmate of mine in high school played in a band in it probably late 60s early 70s. I could hardly believe when they finally tore it down. He went to Lent's school 8th grade at least, which was in the south most part of the David Douglas district at the time. I went to the newer Cherry Park same grade. The boys from Lents were rough but good ball players. Now since 2022 I live down north of 63rd Ave and Foster Road. The big Holgate intersection with Foster area on Foster still has mostly old very interesting buildings. Take care and may the rest of 2025 go well for you and loved ones.

Throughout the '80's the majority of DUI's given out in Multnomah County were within a mile of The Copper Penny, The Refectory, and Heidi's in Gresham. Copper Penny started as a small strip club on 92nd that became a disco, which expanded into another adjacent space, and finally took over the restaurant facing east that would be the large nightclub most people remember.

In the late 70's early 80's The Copper Penny was great. The bands were excellent and the drinks were strong. I slid in with large groups several time before my 21's birthday. However, on my birthday when I was 21 at a few minutes after midnight we went there and they refused me entrance because the backing to the driverl license picture was the wrong color. Back then they had blue for under 21 and yellow for over. I never went back there after that.
