@@134343That would be crazy :D DC fast charging doesn't add components. In the future we might see cars which don't actually have AC charging because there is no in car charger. You can actually already buy such since some cars' internal charger is broken. 😅
I care about efficiency, especially range. Think about people who live in apartment buildings and dont have a garage, yard where to charge the car and they rely on public chargers. To have to charge the car every 2 days will be a pain...no matter how cute the car is.
Unfortunatly the cheap car will be with the small battery, and the almost priced as a Tesla Model 3 will have decent range. (its 33 768 Euro in Sweden) way too expensive.
People may complain. But I love how a funky car like this is here in 2024. With a good enough range, I would buy, even if I don’t, I’m glad it exists and I’ll smile if I see one

Renault is doing itself a big favour with this lovely, relatively affordable small car. I wouldn't quite call it cheap, but nowadays what car still is? This is such a refreshing design and functionality approach as opposed to all the stellantis small cars, that basically are all equal and boring.
It is far from affordable. Such little value to be had with this. Price needs to be dropped significantly. Then it would actually have a selling point.
I love the design. I’m happy that I’ve experienced internal combustion engines, but I’m also grateful to see what technological evolution brings to the table. Good job Renault👏🏼

Renault absolutely nailed it with this car , fab looks and fair value in EV terms. It looks to be a good balance of style and practicality as well as referencing the past while looking modern and not like a cartoon. Be great if they introduced a slightly sportier variant between this and the Alpine, a 5 GT with 170-180 bhp would be awesome.
Nah it should settle around 35k€ for the high trim imo after the initial launch. You won't sell many if you price it almost the same as a Model 3 (which is now 40k€ for the cheapest).
The most detailed review of this car I have yet seen, thank you. The obvious comparator is the range of Mini EVs. In their different ways both brands offer fun, stand out design, an attractive UI, and good entry level pricing. My personal preference is Mini rather than Renault but I could see why someone would buy the Renault - a matter of taste. I do wish car journalists would ban the short hand of “city car”. A more accurate statement in this case would be a car for where most of your journeys are within a 75-100 mile radius and there are plenty of rural use cases for that. As a household in the distant past we have had two Renaults and I hope reliability and cost of spare parts has improved. Also a consideration where I live in the UK would be distance to the nearest Renault dealer.
Love the Renault 5 back in the day and now. Yellow or blue FTW. The sound you mentioned in German we use in English is 'tinny' as in like thin tin the metal.
Great looking car but not affordable at starting price for basic model, just hope that Renault bring the new twingo to the uk, as will be cheaper with another fanatics looking design with possible starting price £17,000. Great review.

Do people really care about the sound of doors?That will always crack me up. As long as it latches correctly & it's hermetic to wind & rain, I don't give a fridge about the sound. 🤣 More seriously, what a wonderful little 🥜 . I find the price at launch high too but I guess Renault is pulling a CyberTruck strategy, grabbing the easy cash first to recoup costs (it's a whole new platform after all) before giving us the cheaper versions in 2025/2026. I personally dig the minimalistic Evolution trim that will cost 27K€ (so 24K€ after EcoBonus). Not cheap (that will be the Twingo's job) but definitely affordable.
As with all Renault models with the android dashboard, the indicator tone has 3 different levels of noise you set in the menu. Great little car that really embraced the original cars design inside and out. What worried me was it needed 8 stops for charging to get to Paris around 850 km. My hybrid Austral, would probably manage that on one tank of fuel as I get here in UK over 700 miles per tank of fuel of 55 litres. As usual though you did a really good review and yes, I did watch the Renault Austral review you did a couple of years ago.
Was wondering myself, maybe the motorway consumption will be much higher, we gotta test that in Germany. Probably also the calculation was somewhat rigged
dude, you don't buy this car if you want to drive the 850km often.... as we never buy a van because we want to change our fridge every now and then... we just rent one when needed.
It would have been truly iconic if they gave us a 1.4 4piston manual fwd version. A little angry 120-140ish turbo nugget. This wash dryer with wheels doesn't interest me at all.

Just one thing as I don't see in almost all of your reviews no outside point of view when the car is ridden in highways, country side roads and many other environments. I think this kind of filming will help to make your reviews even more attractive and entertaining.
Cheers! You mean like "passing by" shots? These are often dangerous and very time intensive to film and considering the often sadly short time frame we usually dont do that. We do sometimes do these showing the car "rolling" to have a nice angle at that when we have a safe location and time
This looks really good! Always appreciate your reviews. The biggest flaws I see from this car : - It's not coming to Canada; - Those capacitive buttons on the steering wheel seem pretty terrible; - It does seem taller than it should for such a short car. I lvoe that it's a short car, but I wish the belt line / window line was a little shorter. I love small light affordable cars (EVs even moreso) so it's nice that people have better choices. It does have somewhat limiting range, so as you've pointed out, long distance travels aren't met without multiple stops. I personally think that's very much acceptable if you only travel long distances occasionally and can afford to spend some time walking around every couple of hours (which is good for you anyway).
Guess I can’t wear my green shirts with my jeans anymore 😢 I think the green with denim interior is a good mix. What a cute car. I’d buy one if they brought it to North America. Which they won’t 😢
I reckon they've nailed the city/commuter car concept. That said, i3 users will attest that a range like that is actually quite useable even for the occasional longer journey. Realistically most people don't do 200 miles every day, and if they do, they need a bigger car. We have two cars but we both commute, so from an eco perspective its fine to have a small car and a large car, as you would still do the same for ICE cars. Its on my list to replace our i3 when(?if) it finally dies.
Such cool little car, I love it. Nice box design ans small measures, makes ir perfect for the city, where I do 98% of my driving. If I can afford it, I would go for the 220 PS A290 sometime next year as my forst EV (perfect for a single man that loves hot hatches).
Yes, I do like it - it might the first EV that I would actively consider buying (!). Very attractive and seems practical. Though its still on the pricey side if you want the big battery with something like a usable range. And yes, those indicator warning noises are SERIOUSLY annoying! They'd be a disincentive to indicate at all!
This is the first car I would consider replacing our 2019 Mazda2 shopping bag with an automatic transmission. The green 1975 Renault 5 was my first car in 1993 when I was 18. I definitely want to be 18 again and drive a green Renault 5 (while I'm keeping the 2022 G31 LCI 540d estate). 😉 16:02 If I were Renault, I'd put a plastic molding on the inside of the front hood for the charging cable.

Reminds me of the modern Mini 1st gen, before it got bloated. Well done Renault. I wish they put an ICE inside!! With this range and price, its use case is limited.
French people are generally shorter than Thomas. Looks like a great EV for the masses. I'd love to see an LCA report on this car. It has the potential to be a very low emissions car for production and operation, which is really something we need more focus on.
I love the renault 5, it was my first car and I'll always have a soft spot for the 5. My problem is that I want to upgrade to an EV not just for city use. I want to use it for roadtrips so I got very sad when I saw that this car would potentially be a pain to do roadtrips on. Not just due to range but interior space for luggage and whatnot. It's a shame because the deep blue version really speaks to me. Best alternative for me would be a tesla model 3 long range 2020 used as it will have more range, more space and equivalent value
@24:18 Auto reviewers used to look for what was called Cowl Shake, a sign that the body was flexing or not particularly solid. I can see the display shaking in this shot.

Renault absolutely nailed it with this car , fab looks and fair value in EV terms. It looks to be a good balance of style and practicality as well as referencing the past while looking modern and not like a cartoon. Be great if they introduced a slightly sportier variant between this and the Alpine, a 5 GT with 170-180 bhp would be awesome.

Sadly, a realistic price for this is around 35-38k Euro. The base model is not sold in most countries. Base model also has no heatpump.
Nah it should settle around 35k€ for the high trim imo after the initial launch. You won't sell many if you price it almost the same as a Model 3 (which is now 40k€ for the cheapest).
@@rkan2 With the fun color option, speaker option picked, it ends up at 36-37k Euro. I just checked it on their site. It's online to configure.

35-40k for a polo sized car with poor range and charging capability. Honestly i don't care how good it looks, it is just not appealing.

I think they've done an incredible job Thomas. First EV i'd consider buying. Seen some picks of the Twingo that looks fabulous also.

The obvious comparator is the range of Mini EVs. In their different ways both brands offer fun, stand out design, an attractive UI, and good entry level pricing. My personal preference is Mini rather than Renault but I could see why someone would buy the Renault - a matter of taste. I do wish car journalists would ban the short hand of “city car”. A more accurate statement in this case would be a car for where most of your journeys are within a 75-100 mile radius and there are plenty of rural use cases for that. As a household in the distant past we have had two Renaults and I hope reliability and cost of spare parts has improved. Also a consideration where I live in the UK would be distance to the nearest Renault dealer.

Love the Renault 5 back in the day and now. Yellow or blue FTW. The sound you mentioned in German we use in English is 'tinny' as in like thin tin the metal.
Great looking car but not affordable at starting price for basic model, just hope that Renault bring the new twingo to the uk, as will be cheaper with another fanatics looking design with possible starting price £17,000. Great review.

I find the price at launch high too but I guess Renault is pulling a CyberTruck strategy, grabbing the easy cash first to recoup costs (it's a whole new platform after all) before giving us the cheaper versions in 2025/2026.
I personally dig the minimalistic Evolution trim that will cost 27K€ (so 24K€ after EcoBonus).
Not cheap (that will be the Twingo's job) but definitely affordable.
As with all Renault models with the android dashboard, the indicator tone has 3 different levels of noise you set in the menu.
Great little car that really embraced the original cars design inside and out.
What worried me was it needed 8 stops for charging to get to Paris around 850 km.
My hybrid Austral, would probably manage that on one tank of fuel as I get here in UK over 700 miles per tank of fuel of 55 litres.
As usual though you did a really good review and yes, I did watch the Renault Austral review you did a couple of years ago.
it has a real range of 350km. so 8 stops for 850km???

dude, you don't buy this car if you want to drive the 850km often.... as we never buy a van because we want to change our fridge every now and then... we just rent one when needed.
I also think that it is a lack of proper fast charging stations that make the trip that long

Thomas I think you make a good point about having 1 car for city and 1 car for highway. Definitely better to have a more versatile car for all.
It would have been truly iconic if they gave us a 1.4 4piston manual fwd version. A little angry 120-140ish turbo nugget. This wash dryer with wheels doesn't interest me at all.

Just one thing as I don't see in almost all of your reviews no outside point of view when the car is ridden in highways, country side roads and many other environments.

Cheers! You mean like "passing by" shots? These are often dangerous and very time intensive to film and considering the often sadly short time frame we usually dont do that. We do sometimes do these showing the car "rolling" to have a nice angle at that when we have a safe location and time

The biggest flaws I see from this car :
- It's not coming to Canada;
- Those capacitive buttons on the steering wheel seem pretty terrible;
- It does seem taller than it should for such a short car. I lvoe that it's a short car, but I wish the belt line / window line was a little shorter.
I love small light affordable cars (EVs even moreso) so it's nice that people have better choices. It does have somewhat limiting range, so as you've pointed out, long distance travels aren't met without multiple stops. I personally think that's very much acceptable if you only travel long distances occasionally and can afford to spend some time walking around every couple of hours (which is good for you anyway).

I reckon they've nailed the city/commuter car concept. That said, i3 users will attest that a range like that is actually quite useable even for the occasional longer journey. Realistically most people don't do 200 miles every day, and if they do, they need a bigger car. We have two cars but we both commute, so from an eco perspective its fine to have a small car and a large car, as you would still do the same for ICE cars. Its on my list to replace our i3 when(?if) it finally dies.

Such cool little car, I love it. Nice box design ans small measures, makes ir perfect for the city, where I do 98% of my driving. If I can afford it, I would go for the 220 PS A290 sometime next year as my forst EV (perfect for a single man that loves hot hatches).
The small battery cheapest version would tick a lot of boxes as a second car or city only car. Good to see EVs becoming more accessible
Yes, I do like it - it might the first EV that I would actively consider buying (!). Very attractive and seems practical. Though its still on the pricey side if you want the big battery with something like a usable range. And yes, those indicator warning noises are SERIOUSLY annoying! They'd be a disincentive to indicate at all!
Without doubt the best small EV yet. So much more stylish than the mini imo.

This is the first car I would consider replacing our 2019 Mazda2 shopping bag with an automatic transmission. The green 1975 Renault 5 was my first car in 1993 when I was 18. I definitely want to be 18 again and drive a green Renault 5 (while I'm keeping the 2022 G31 LCI 540d estate). 😉

French people are generally shorter than Thomas. Looks like a great EV for the masses. I'd love to see an LCA report on this car. It has the potential to be a very low emissions car for production and operation, which is really something we need more focus on.

I love the renault 5, it was my first car and I'll always have a soft spot for the 5.
My problem is that I want to upgrade to an EV not just for city use. I want to use it for roadtrips so I got very sad when I saw that this car would potentially be a pain to do roadtrips on. Not just due to range but interior space for luggage and whatnot.
It's a shame because the deep blue version really speaks to me.
Best alternative for me would be a tesla model 3 long range 2020 used as it will have more range, more space and equivalent value

@24:18 Auto reviewers used to look for what was called Cowl Shake, a sign that the body was flexing or not particularly solid. I can see the display shaking in this shot.

In Finland this car costs 33.000-36.000€
I couldn't find the price at their Finnish website, but guess that it is for the top trim.
I suppose if you compare it with a small well specified hot hatch (which no one really makes anymore) in Finland its about that sort of price.
Just the 5% higher VAT adds 2k€. You can get a Model 3 60kWh for 39990€ now so a top trim R5 approaching 40k€ wouldn't make much sense at all.
@@Whatshisname346 There is still Hyundai N20, and yes, it costs similar money. However, Hyundai is better because of more power, LSD, and some other sport tweaks.
