I think Renault have knocked it out of the park with this, and I haven't owned a French car since a POS 206 GTi 25 years ago! Price point is great. It''s the only thing that I'd consider to replace our BMW i3....... 👍👍👍
If they only had added moving rear seats as the Hyundai Inster (or old Twingo) they would nailed it. The narrow space for the feet in the rear is the biggest flaw.
Renault really are nailing design at the moment. They should be proud of what they are achieving. The standard green paint of this car is also a welcome relief from the monochrome whites, blacks and silvers that dominate our roads in the UK. 👍
Hello Peter.Time to just go out and buy one….it is RIGHT on every level and the whole EV battles would have been addressed for many, many people long ago. No bonkers performance, no unrealistic clams, it does what most people want and is beautifully styled PLUS is a good price. Renault have landed this car right on the nail. Yep…just order..job done! ( I configured a yellow Iconic and ordered everything to land at £32500….still a bargain! Stay safe.Richard😀😀😀😀😀
For us it’s perfect my Wife and myself both have company cars, I leave my job in April after 15 years to work as a consultant working from home, so an Electric Town car is ideal as we have home charging, treated myself to a 2011 997.2 Turbo yesterday, placed order as well for new 5 awaiting confirmation, I had original MK2 5 Turbo in 1989 as my 2nd ever car, so lovely be the design of new car..
I've configured the Techno version, large battery in Pop Green with the black roof. Just over £27K, so competitive in the EV sector. My concern surrounds real world range, which we all know is inflated by manufacturers.
I can tell you how range was on the predecessor, the Zoe. My gen 3 Zoe got 230 miles in the summer and 180 in the winter. Cold, wind, heavy acceleration and driving at 70 instead of 65 were the things that affected range significantly. This car charges twice as fast as the Zoe did, which helps
Looks brilliant and a very compelling price point. At last re name of an iconic car that resembles the original, unlike the Ford Capri... Will be interesting to see how it sells in the UK. Hopefully we'll see them on the road.
Had R5s when I was kid, and Gordini/GT Turbos when I was old enough to get behind the wheel myself, so absolutely love this...I just can't decide whether it's able to go far enough or fast enough for me. I probably will pull the trigger, but I just have a nagging feeling the ID2 with over 200bhp and somewhere around 60kWh would suit me better even though it won't have the character this does
I couldn't live with the minimal rear room and small boot but if it gets more people into EVs then great. If anyone said to me you could have an R5 or a Mini it would be the R5
I saw 2 R 5 (black and yellow) here in Switzerland, but with french plates (since the onwers work in Switzerland and commute every day ) and to be honest the Yellow one is sooooo cool !! And yes..for me small yet pratical Evs could be perfect...if charging at home at low (if possible) prices.
I wish all EV reviews would have a chapter ‘real world range’ with proper tests even if it’s someone saying I’ve got X out of it driving around town, motorway efficiency drops to Y meaning roughly Z miles.
The lease options will come down, this is highly sought after car that's not even on UK roads yet. Summer into next winter there will probably be some really good deals.
The shorter range battery is LFP, which some may prefer (though I'd agree that for not much more money, the longer range, higher powered version looks very good value).
11:44 I tend to look at 2 or 3 year old EV’s.. we got our Zoe ze50 for £14500 when it was less than 2 years old sub 9k miles on the clock on a 0% pcp deal..
@ why wouldn’t I? It’s far cheaper than buying brand new, something I’ve never ever done in all my 58 years on this planet! Why? Well mainly depreciation costs of buying brand new has always been an issue for years on most new cars including I.c.e driven cars.. and the fact I simply couldn’t afford it!
If I was going to have (my first) electric car. Well French manufacturer Renault are one of the best car companies with electrical stuff....right.....oh wait
Absolutely we have had five MINI’s two currently on the drive both ordered factory new in a hatch and clubman. My hatch is now over ten years old on low miles and the clubman is three years old over 100k miles. The clubman is getting replaced in March with a new Range Rover - I know not my choice but this R5 could be to replace my Hatch MINI. I love it’s look and it’s not stupidly expensive like the electric MINI that I don’t like the rear and sports pack is need for it to look good so £35k plus. Although sport pack mini are coming down.
That looks an interesting car and I also like the yellow as I had the MG ZR in yellow and everybody that had one always flashed in acknowledgement as you drove past which was good. I think I would probably get the Alpine though if I was seriously looking at the car.
I love the R5 design wise and it’s great to hear your enthusiasm for how it drives too. Are they doing a GT version? This car with 250-300 bhp would be mental. That said, that would kill the range and I suppose there’s only so big a battery you can stick in one of these.
I adore everything about this car! They didn't seem to dilute it from the lovely prototype you reported upon. It's PERFECT for me! However...I'd have to turn off Microsoft Clippy whilst driving it.😆🤣 Love the nippy, hate the Clippy.
Hi… do you understand..? After all this fabulous technology built into EV’s, why do we have to mess fitting a dash-cam especially as cars have 360* footage that just needs a SD card option somewhere abouts…? Furthermore I had to hide a wire all around the dash etc, never occurred but as afterthought, could I have risked settling air bags off 😮?
Tbh folk get really hung up on range but relatively modest battery and fast charging seems to be the sweet spot. I run an ex30 and get 200 miles max in most circumstances. I do 20000 miles a year and do a lot of long range runs all around central Scotland and up to Inverness and Aberdeen. I also need to regularly drive to Manchester . These are decent 3-4hr drives and I haven’t had any issues getting charged on these trips or the charging being onerous. Longest run has been from Portsmouth (goodwood) to Glasgow. 3 stops on the way back of around 30mins mins average. Stopped for lunch , a coffee and dinner meaning I was doing something when stopped. It meant I took sensible breaks and had an unstressed drive. Overall cost was more than my usual journey cost but it still worked out almost the same as when we did it in my previous petrol car.
@@markhamilton7289 you didn’t say which EV you own…you were very vague….ah you did sorry ex30 whatever that is but then I’m totally ignorant Ex30 £32000-£43000….bargain!😂
@@brianmansfield666suggest you look at the price of all new cars. We also have a Zoe we bought second hand 4 yrs ago. That cost us 16k and has been fine with really cheap running costs. We will probably keep it until 2nd hand r5s are about.
I agree. I have a Corsa-e. The range is lower than many EVs but longer journeys are perfectly fine. The days of not being able to get a charger at a service station are long-gone, and a quick top up is no longer than it takes to go to the loo. Range anxiety is a thing that people need to move on from. That said, the larger battery R5 will probably give an extra 30 miles of range over my Corsa and that would be worth having. I'll definitely be having an R5 next - it's clearly an amazing car and the design is perfect.
Why do they not have a charge cable fitted to the car ….Just pull it out and plug it in ? Another honest appraisal from one of Utubes best car journalists.
Thinking about this (well, the Alpine A290), the MINI JCW or the VW ID GTI for my first EV. The real drawback for the R5/A290 is the fact that the charging port is on the wrong side of the vehicle for my garage :(
I think it's a really nice runner !! I think he sounds like C3PO 😅 the price is great !! Pricing is all over the place, in a world where people are dropping 150k, there needs to be better options for lower budgets.
Enjoyed the R5 review , not so much the advert for the dash-cam !! Hopefully we won’t have to endure other such adverts in the future unless Ped’s fallen on hard times and we know that isn’t the case.
You happily watched the video for free though right ? I try to choose organic commercial partners to work with to help support the running of the channel and the making of the content you guys get to enjoy. I have bills to pay just like you do 🤷♂️
@@PetrolPed thanks for the reply Pedro. I watch numerous car posts on TH-cam , including Matt Watson etc , but can’t recall the post being interrupted by an advert for some product. However , I do enjoy your posts and look forward to the next one. Cheers , Paul
I really want one! But I’m a little concerned as it’s good value (for an EV) will the prices drop quickly and used models will be so cheap, and extra good value for money then maybe I should wait but that’s the thing with all news cars I guess!
I’m looking forward to trying a R5…I’d be interested to know if the smaller battery version is noticeably lighter and more nimble..? My current EV has a 28kwh battery and has the range quoted as 170 miles…😊
These have just appeared on salary sacrifice for me. The difference between the small and large battery is about £10 a month for me. I wouldn’t know whether to go for yellow or this green though
Agreed but it’s probably because a small, light city car is where an EV actually works. Whereas a large, overweight, overpriced EV makes no sense at all and they’ll be better solutions for long range, family cars before too long.
Yes it should make a good shopping trolley, tethered to it's cheap home charger 8.5 p per kwhr octopus electricity range. Similar use case to a milk float. The use cycles and time degradation in that scenario will have a reduced effect over the years, if it hardly goes any distance.
@charlesstewardson8546 is that why a 20 reg model 3 Tesla shown on autotrader, on Barry Crampton's youtube Channel, with a warrantied battery degradation of 25% after 55k miles was up for sale. All lithium ion and lfp batteries degrade with time and use cycles. Don't be fooled. Remember most EV's on the road are fairly new. There will be a tidal wave of degradation reported shortly from consumers, when the newer, none early adopter EV's present.. Just wait. From 5 years old onwards, severe degradation presents itself usually. Mine did. My ecoflow delta 2 is lfp. It has a good battery management system but it still only has a 10 year guarantee. That is brand new.
It’s time for manufacturers to fit dash cams as standard or at least provide a USB point at the mirror. The Renault 5 is exactly what a EV should be (a small city car). They’ll be better solutions coming for long range. How a manufacturer like lotus. with its experience of small and light, missed this segment is a tragedy.
These look the dog's bananas. Would definitely consider one as a 2nd car. Great price. Although that Renault version of "Clippy" needs to be consigned to the automotive dustbin. It was terrible in MS Office, it's terrible here too.
Last I read, the R5 Turbo has been confirmed for Australia, but the regular R5 has not. Renault Australia really want and is pushing to get the car, but there are some ADR issues that need to be addressed. Specifically the passenger airbag off switch and something with the rear bench. If it does make it to Aus, pricing will probably be $45k-$50k. I imagine we would only get the big-battery, high output version, so it may be on the higher side. It will be really hard to resist if it does come to Aus.
It's intriguing, but I can't get my head around the finance. The chunky deposit seems to be because (based on that bubble payment) they expect the car to be worth around half of its original value after only 2 years? That seems insane to me.
Looks good, I definitely like it (even with its French "je ne sais quoi" 😂) - Renault are onto a winner in the EV world (but why the dark headlining, again ☹️ ?). You are right a WLTP range of 250 miles, will actually be 200 miles in winter (bad weather), but in summer (good weather) on mixed driving, you will probably achieve near 250 miles (which is a "comfortable " range of 200 miles, which is usually plenty) 🙂. VW have really dropped the ball - their ID2 coming next year - really ?
I want one! Pete, as you are a Mini fan I'm interested as to whether you would buy one of these rather than a Mini electric, which starts at £30k for the 40kWh entry level version?
In the EU where I live this is quite a bit more expensive than the Citroen C3 and the Hyundai Inster. I'm not really sure it's worth more than these cars though. Right now I'm not really considering it but maybe if it gets to the price of the C3 and the Inster I might.
It looks amazing but the range of the smaller electric battery version just isnt good enough and even the largest isnt fantastic. However if i was going for an electric, it would be this or the Tavascan
Great video and pleased that you enjoyed driving on just the kind of roads where I do most of my motoring. I hope to be able to drive a demonstrator in about 6 weeks time when I am told that the first rhd cars will arrive in the UK. My heart though is set on an Alpine A290 although like you a yellow nicely spec’d R5 might be a more head over the heart choice. Having a Megane E-Tech I have got to love the built-in tech which I think has largely been carried over to the R5 and A290. I think I would though miss the better performance (and range) of the Megane and I don’t really want to trade the comfort and refinement of the larger Renault model which I have come to appreciate. Having been a serial Mini Cooper S owner the new J01 electric model just doesn’t interest me. I don’t like the minimalist interior, the reports of its poorer quality and its bulbous shape. I know the SE is faster and has sportier handling but it is 200kg heavier and substantially more expensive. IMHO BMW have seriously dropped the ball with the Cooper and the Aceman. Perhaps BMW have been a bit too complacent. Who would have predicted that it would be Renault who would be making the Mini look decidedly old school.
Just as a postscript in the current (Awards) issue of What Car has a test comparison between the Mini Cooper E (£30,000) and R5 52Kwh Techno (£26,995). R5 awarded (maximum) 5 Stars, Mini (mediocre) 3 Stars. No contest.
Yo are doing a 25 minute review, but never mention what any of the buttons do, something every one wants more of, rather than fiddling with a screen to adjust the heater etc, can see some on steering wheel, did it have cruise controls, do the rear seats fold forward, also the front seats looks very supportive , ? we’re they? You had a nice drive seems more important than information for us.
Re. comments on the PCP deals, affordability, cost of living (pressures on some; many?), running costs and depreciation at last some good news! With the genius Economist Treasurer developing economic policy and Ed guaranteeing lower energy prices things are bound to get better for us all now. No? Even with the VED changes coming, these massively lower electricity costs, much more of one’s wages to be left in the pocket each month and the much anticipated better road quality this bodes so well. Might order two…
Just an afterthought, with the huge rise in job creation and opportunities Labour are providing there could be far more young people employed now and possible targets for the car. In fact, maybe some of the 7 million signed off from work (by soppy bollock and 3 day weeker GPs) long term - mostly for stress! - might find some easy amenable way to finally provide for themselves and actually earn an income. Could help finance a car?
Nice car wil i or won't i,still feel depreciation will be an issue you throw in 9000,then monthly payment for 24 months will it retain the residual value, might be a good second hand buy.
Whilst I love the look of these and need to have a go, to see if it would sway me towards electric. I love the channel but it seems to be going a bit commercial I don’t know if you are worried about saying anything bad about anything you’re lent, but it sort of feels there is no negative points on a lot of reviews and leads to a false sense of security
Your comment about it being mini like makes like this more as yeah does seem it + at its price is a better effort than mini's EVs (do own a mini convertible as a my main car).

👍
Fantastic review ! Thanks ! Car of the year 2025 ! Voiture de l'année 2025 😍 ! Really deserves it !
I think this is the very first EV I'd actually like to own!
It's fun, looks good and seems ideal for short day-to-day journeys.
Emphasis on short.... Apart from refuelling times which are very long.
As a non EV-er, I like that. A lot. What a small ev should be, at a price most could afford too.
This looks like a real contender for the new mini EV 😳
I've configured the Techno version, large battery in Pop Green with the black roof. Just over £27K, so competitive in the EV sector. My concern surrounds real world range, which we all know is inflated by manufacturers.
That's the fault of the WLTP system, not the manufs per se. The EPA ratings for the same cars in the US are much more realistic compared to EU/WLTP
When the Zoe comes up for replacement I’ll definitely be looking at one for these.
Ditto
Great looking EV, probably the only EV I have ever thought "wow I would like that car"
Had R5s when I was kid, and Gordini/GT Turbos when I was old enough to get behind the wheel myself, so absolutely love this...I just can't decide whether it's able to go far enough or fast enough for me. I probably will pull the trigger, but I just have a nagging feeling the ID2 with over 200bhp and somewhere around 60kWh would suit me better even though it won't have the character this does
If I could afford one, I would buy in a heartbeat!, got to be the yellow one though
Love 🧡 the camera 📸 I think 💭 it should be standard now in all vehicles 🚗.
I couldn't live with the minimal rear room and small boot but if it gets more people into EVs then great. If anyone said to me you could have an R5 or a Mini it would be the R5
Why is getting people into EVs a good idea. They are all an impractical solution to an imaginary problem
@@wakeywarrior Official EV range, divide by a third and subtract. ie; 300 official, 200 actual.
Those lease prices of £300-400 for a small city car is *insane* to me....even before a £4k (or more) downpayment.
A 5 second google search gave just over £220 p/month with 2.7K down. Not quite your figures.
@@clarkwgriswold157 Not sure if you bothered to watch the video, but the comments was in relation to Peter calling £311/month "amazing"
@ wasn’t he talking about pcp? Not lease.
Why would you buy a second hand EV? I don't even buy a second hand phone.
Another Superb Vlog, Thank You Mr. Petrol Ped For All Your Hard Work ... 👏👏👏
I've read somewhere in the last week that based on orders so far, 40% are the smaller battery and 60% are the larger battery.
If I was going to have (my first) electric car.
Well French manufacturer Renault are one of the best car companies with electrical stuff....right.....oh wait
Nice car! Keep up the good work!
Harry said 'better than the electric mini'. You seem to agree. Any chance to meet you and Ruby on the International Mini Meeting in August? Cheers.
I imagine a good set of summer tyres would fix the torque steer
Love the styling - at last something reasonably priced but best as a second car. Looks much better than the Mini.
There is the Alpine version. There will also be an R5 Turbo with something crazy like 500hp.
Love 🧡 is it coming to Australia 🇦🇺.
Love this!! I think this is going to worry the Euro legacy brands! Why would you pay £10k+ extra on the Mini or ID3 etc.
I had a Renault turbo back in the day and I would get one of these but only second hand when they are half the price 😊
Yawn… EV propaganda
@@brianmansfield666I’d suggest you don’t buy one then and continue to comment from a position of ignorance.
@@markhamilton7289 you didn’t say which EV you own…you were very vague….ah you did sorry ex30 whatever that is but then I’m totally ignorant
Ex30 £32000-£43000….bargain!😂
New panda does I believe.
Awesome review too ped cx
You will see one in every Mat Armstrong video 🤷♂️
@@PaulRedmore The entirety of Carwow is an advert for Carwow? And Mat Watson's personal channel has sponsorships too.
Surely that's on the NEDC rather than WLTP? Seems rather generous for that size of battery.
These have just appeared on salary sacrifice for me. The difference between the small and large battery is about £10 a month for me. I wouldn’t know whether to go for yellow or this green though
Nice to see so many positive ev comments, not the usual myth peddling 👍
Agreed but it’s probably because a small, light city car is where an EV actually works. Whereas a large, overweight, overpriced EV makes no sense at all and they’ll be better solutions for long range, family cars before too long.
Yes it should make a good shopping trolley, tethered to it's cheap home charger 8.5 p per kwhr octopus electricity range. Similar use case to a milk float. The use cycles and time degradation in that scenario will have a reduced effect over the years, if it hardly goes any distance.
@@FredFox-m9vnot really the case any more. Battery tech has moved on. Even home batteries have 20 year plus effective lives.
@ plenty of proof to show the opposite to that…
It’s time for manufacturers to fit dash cams as standard or at least provide a USB point at the mirror.
Amazing car, I’d love one!
Yeah I want one... in the US... (a guy can dream!)
Love this motor. Reasonably price just wondering what price it will be in Australia and when it will be imported here?
Last I read, the R5 Turbo has been confirmed for Australia, but the regular R5 has not. Renault Australia really want and is pushing to get the car, but there are some ADR issues that need to be addressed. Specifically the passenger airbag off switch and something with the rear bench.
If it does make it to Aus, pricing will probably be $45k-$50k. I imagine we would only get the big-battery, high output version, so it may be on the higher side.
It will be really hard to resist if it does come to Aus.
Got lots going for it . Waiting a year to get one at £15K the way EV's are depreciating
Good luck with that. The waiting lists alone for this car will keep residual values fairly solid for a couple of years...
Next thing Peugeot will bring out an EV version of the 205 GTi I was fortunate enough to drive in the 1980s.
I had a mini metro, loved it
In the EU where I live this is quite a bit more expensive than the Citroen C3 and the Hyundai Inster.
The Nicole's of this world will love it!!
Whilst I love the look of these and need to have a go, to see if it would sway me towards electric. I love the channel but it seems to be going a bit commercial
I don’t know if you are worried about saying anything bad about anything you’re lent, but it sort of feels there is no negative points on a lot of reviews and leads to a false sense of security
The mean streets of Chichester beware of the Rotary Club massive.
For the money I would defo buy 1 of these as about the only 1 I can afford new
You meant the steeringwheel is on the right side :)
I always rather liked a spot of torque steer - never understood why car journalists have castigated it over the years.
Petrol Pierre...Renault R5, Michelin jacket...conversion complete 🙂
Waiting for the Alpine A290 GTS 😁😁😁👍🏻🇲🇫
great review of the new renualt 5 looks a great car petrol ped , they got one of thease on bobt comp to be won check it out mate
looks fab
Your comment about it being mini like makes like this more as yeah does seem it + at its price is a better effort than mini's EVs (do own a mini convertible as a my main car).
😂😂😂
Not really interested in an EV - but this change by mind. It’s leagues ahead of a mini … it is classy and stylish.
