As Lamar knows, I was born in 1973 in Seattle, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. I was PUMPED when the Blazers got Steve Smith. I know that he wasn't the most athletic or the best defender, but he got hot as a shooter, and was a solid citizen whose leadership could have helped the Blazers to a title. I hate what the Spurs have done to the Blazers over the years, but I'm glad Steve Smith won a ring.
***** The Atlanta Hawks management team from the late 90s were so dumb enough to trade Mookie Blaylock AND Steve Smith, assuming that both of 'em were long in the tooth. Blaylock was traded to Golden State for Bimbo Coles, and Steve Smith was traded to Portland for troublemakers Isaiah Rider and Jim Jackson. Now you don't have a good combo when you have Coles, Rider and Jackson as your main backcourt-made guys. They should've kept Blaylock and Smith, and if they were still going down that route, the Hawks should've kept veteran Tyrone Corbin on their roster for 1999-2000 instead of cutting him and letting him walk as a free agent to the Sacramento Kings. It would've been interesting to see if Corbin could be a mentor to the troubled Isaiah Rider. Anyway, do you think Tyrone Corbin's ever been a locker room lawyer in his entire NBA career from 1985-86 to 2000-01?
Well put. They were even dumber for not acquiring Dominique Wilkins from the Spurs during the 1996-97 NBA Trade Deadline and worse yet, trading him three years prior to the lowly Los Angeles Clippers. The Hawks have a history of bad management. They could have had at least a Championship by now.
Hell he was nearly 35 at this point and he definitely was not the same guy he was in Cleveland.... he still avg 8 ppg off the bench as beat up as he was in 96... but he was definitely a shell of himself in 96... he lost his ability to defend good players like he did in 80s n early 90s... that’s why the next year he hung it up
5:45 the Smitty dance/convulsion, referenced by Dennis Scott in an episode of Open Court
