@@cornellkirk8946 I used to work for British Aerospace at what had been an old WW2. One day we had e a Vulcan doing circuit and bumps, the airfield would have been used if war had broken out.
Everyone stopped to watch and though we were some distance from the aircraft you could feel your whole body vibrating from the power of the engines when she opened up the throttles.
I saw one at an airshow as a kid (& a Canberra l think)...

They've got Kingsford Smiths old GEA-OU (God elp all of us!) WW1 bomber.. the Southern Cross at Adelaide Airport.

When I was with British Aerospace we did have a Canberra visit which was doubly interesting. Firstly it was great to see the Canberra and secondly where we worked was an old WW2 bomber base which was used by an Australian squadron. I sometimes used to think of the airmen who flow from there and never came back. There was a memorial to the squadron at the gate to the base.

The airshow l watched as a kid was in SA in the 70s, they still had RAAF livery, biggest things ld ever seen....til l lived in Darwin & saw B52s take off.
The engines at max thrust are the most terrifying sounds you will ever hear.
I've been blasted in the face by vulcans several times, and it was so loud that it sounds quiet... Until you realise you can't hear yourself speak 😅

The British have this incredible ability to make machines works of art. Spitfire, Vulcan, Jaguar, Aston Martin, list goes on and on.

That howl is iconic. First time I heard it was Abby in 1986. It’s a sound you never forget. You sure as hell didn’t want to be on the receiving end of it’s Yellow Sun payload.

I feel so privileged to have been able to see one of these at an air show, and even more privileged to have been able to hear it
That howl as it went into a vertical climb right above you was the most epic sound I ever heard in addition to the jetwash shower, sadly that was it's last year doing the UK Airshow Circuit. It was costing £1M a year to run and funding became scarce as the Airshow announcer very sadly announced. I saluted the Vulcan as did many others knowing it would never fly our way again.
I've been blasted in the face about 80ft away vulcans several times, and it is so loud it sounds quiet, until you realise you can't hear yourself think 😅
The Vulcan and Victor are just about the best looking aircrafts ever. Used to see them fly very low just above my school. Sooooo cool when you're a kid!
Ive had the honor to witness this stunning Aviation legend flying during RIAT 2009.
Impressive falls way too short when watching it on the ground but when it takes to the sky is absolutely a magical sight to behold.
And don't forget that engine howl.
The aircraft that was Jack Kennedy's ace up his sleeve during the Cuban crisis. Kruschev would later record in his biography written by his son that it wasn't B-52s that worried him it was the Vulcans as he knew he couldn't 'see' them on radar as they could come in so low or bring them down at their full height.
Macmillan made sure the Vulcan Squadrons stayed at their usual bases to avoid mistakes but were ordered to be parked on the end of runways fuelled, tooled and crewed to be gone within 2 minutes. The average time achieved was 1 minute 34 seconds. Crews knew that if they were going for real there would likely be no UK left to come back to. Including their families.

The B-52 could low fly, there’s plenty of pictures and documents that show B-52s flying under the carrier deck of aircraft carriers during joint Airforce-Navy flight ops

The B-52s never worried Kruschev.
Flying past a carrier in a planned demonstration is one thing (and very very easy) but flying in low across Europe through valleys and past mountains in wartime is a very different game. And the B-52 just cannot cut it when it comes down to that because it just does not have the speed of maneuvering. It is a high level blanket bomber. Period.
Plus, as we proved in the early '60s the Vulcan also had advanced electronic warfare systems that confused radars and other sensors especially fighter radars. In operation Skyshield 1 8 x Vulcans flew in to 'attack' the USA while NORAD put up hundreds of fighters. The US fighters caught the attacking B-47s easy, then the B-52s but the Vulcans came in 2 x 4 ship formations. One from Scotland and one from Bahamas. In each one the fighters got one but the the other three put up a wall of electronic mess. One from each formation got to their targets and could have nuked the Eastern Seaboard.
And when the USAF asked them back again the next year to prove it was a fluke they did it all over again. 8 Vulcans, 6 defeated the US defence systems and 2 'bombed' Eastern USA. The first the USAF knew about it was when one landed at a USAF air base!
The B-52 is a scary impressive bomber. But please don't insult us by making out it can do what a Vulcan can do. I never suggested a Vulcan could deliver the bombload of a B-52 because it was designed to deliver stand of nuclear missiles.

Also back to my statement on the B-52 it wasn’t a planned fly by it was a war game that the US airforce was to use its strategic bombers to hunt down a carrier group and sink it, which the B-52 was able to do and did it multiple times in training and low flying is a standard strategic bomber strategy it’s not necessarily something that made the Vulcan unique on its own certainly it supersonic capabilities are far more impressive then pulling off standard Cold War bomber doctrine

And on your last point I knew that would get under your Yank skin and why I put it in there. The engines are British Rolls Royce engines that are manufactured in the USA because everything you buy HAS to be built (even under licence) in USA. Pork Barrel Politics and all that jazz. Its still a British designed, developed and proven engine. Like the B-57 was a British aircraft built by Martin, the AV-8 Harrier was a British aircraft built jointly by BAE and McDonnell Douglas and the T-45 Goshawk is a British aircraft again jointly built by BAE and McDonnell Douglas.
The issue is you Yanks can never just say 'Wow that is real clever'. No you HAVE to find something to 'better' it to feed your oversize egos. Even when its Yank BS.

The B52 is the longest flying and robust bomber ever, but it's maneuverability couldn't compete with the Vulcan. The big wings and huge load prevented it from low and quick turns
Except from the speed and maneuverability, the B52 had/has a better flight history and records of course and so probably the best bomber ever. It's not a big discussion 👍🏻
The deacon from our church was a pilot of a Vulcan during the sixties sometime. He said all the air crew loved the bomber.
I watched this fly at the Mildenhall Airshow in the early nineties.
I've never heard an aircraft as loud. Car alarms were going off when it engaged full throttle to climb.
Definitely one of my favourite planes.
Probably one of the most beautiful aircraft ever created.

It had only 2 two ejection seats: for the pilot & copilot who were officers The remaining 4 enlisted crew had to go down with the plane like they did in the 1956 crash upon approach to Heathrow (in bad weather). It only put a crater or two in the main runway at Port Stanley in '82. This damage was quickly repaired by Argentine forces there. Another Vulcan either sustained antiaircraft damage or suffered a technical malfuntion & had to make an emergency landing in Rio de Janeiro. The Brazilians detained that plane until the end of the Fallklands war. The Vulcan did successfully bomb the US 2x in the early 60's during a simulation. However, while it's a beautiful design & visually interesting; there's a reason it was retired unlike the B52. Also only one is flying in Britian at airshows & costs several million USD annually to stay airworthy. That's too bad because the Vulcan's rarity makes it that much harder to experience it in person.
The last Vulcan flight was in 2015. They're all permanently grounded in museums now unfortunately.
For the most part, the role the vulcan played can be done now by smaller and faster aircraft with potentially more powerful weapons. Due to increased military integration with forces such as the US, we have been allowed to focus on more manageable assets
Only 7 years between the Lancaster & Vulcan being the UK's front line bomber.....Incredible how quick aviation technology was moving back then!

The Vulcan howl is a sound I will never forget after seeing one of its last flights at an airshow. It was grounded the following the year.
Same here (and same year I think). We anchored at the edge of the show zone in the water, and got to look right up its pipes as it did the climb after passing low. Felt like my body and the whole boat was being shaken apart!

Saw it at Southport Airshow that very year, most impressive aircraft I ever saw, the howl as it went into a climb right above the crowd was a sound of beauty and terror at the same time, like Thor had just Emptied his Lungs in Anger.

For me it's the greatest aircraft ever made, the roar of those engine are like nothing else that has ever flown.
They say if you heard the whistle of the Vulcan come by, your life was over seconds later as the bombs were already dropped.
I once had a close encounter with one of these. I was just below a ridge on a remote Scottish mountain, with a strong wind drowning out any sound. Suddenly a Vulcan appeared from behind the ridge, directly over my head. It can only have been 100' above me - I could see every rivet. The famous howl of the jets was almost literally earsplitting. Not an experience I'll ever forget.

The reason:
Planes need to be light to fly efficiently. They also need to be strong.
Light metal: aluminium (or any other equivalent).
Strong metal: steel of some kind.
You can not weld these two metals together. There is therefore generally a steel (or similar strong metal) bracket holding together sheets of aluminium or something else light.
It’s all riveted together.
Fun fact: Each Boeing 747 has over 1 million rivets!
It also makes parts easily removable and replaceable as opposed to welds.
She's one of the coolest looking jets ever made. If you painted her Galactic grey, she wouldn't look out of place in a Star Wars movie.

The Vulcan bomber was used to carry a simulated nuke attack on America twice and it got through on both and simulated a nuke on the white house and somewhere else.
The Vulcan was an elite aircraft the reason it got retired is because every flight would break the engine and other parts costing way too much to continue the maintenance funding for other projects was stopped just to pay for the repairs on the Vulcan.
1974 as a United Nations 🇺🇳 trooper ( 🇬🇧 Army) in Famagusta- I watched and listened in awe as four Vulcans flying out of Royal Air Force Akrotiri Cyprus 🇨🇾 flew over my head in Famagusta just hours before my hotel Aspelia was flattened- courtesy 🇹🇷 Air Force

I saw one of these fly in 1991 on its way to RAF Mildenhall, England, for an airshow.
I heard an amazing sound and looked up in the air and saw this plane fly toward me, almost overhead, and begin a turn. It honestly looked like it had stalled, and I thought to myself, "I'm dead".
Instead, it appeared to float like a kite on a string, and slowly soared to a runway less than a mile away.
I absolutely fell in love.
I saw one at Mildenhall. My uncle used to take us there so the adults could have a bit of peace. Loved going to see the planes.
If I remember correctly, in training exercises Avro Vulcans successfully carried out mock nuclear bombing runs against US cities, twice. All without US interceptors getting anywhere close to them
Also during the Falklands war, the RAF had to drag an old retired Vulcan out of service, and actually asked IWM Duxford for their Vulcan displayed in the museum (the museum refused and ultimately the aircraft was used for parts to prepare another Vulcan)

Edit: I’ve changed the focus of the comment as I feel my first point was not of the best standard and feel I can make a better point that can be helpful to anyone who reads this thread later.
Comparing the Avro Vulcan to the A4 skyhawk is not a very relevant comparison, as they served two VERY different roles during the conflict and were very different aircraft (it would be akin to comparing the A-10 to the B-2). The Avro Vulcan raid on Port Stanley, while it’s military effectiveness is debated, was a powerful psychological weapon for the UK. As far as the Argentine soldiers were aware, they weren’t save even if they were miles from the front line - a Vulcan could bomb them at any moment. Additionally, in the minds of the Argentinians at home, they weren’t safe either - the Falkland Islands are not that far away from Argentina and as far as they were concerned: if the RAF could bomb the Falklands, it could bomb them too
The Skyhawks, while fairly capable against the British on the ground were against RAF sea harriers (that’s the better comparison to make) and ultimately it was the sinking of the General Belgrano (I think) that pushed Argentine air cover off the island

The Vulcans did a few Nuclear Drills in the US along with the B-52s and actually had a better bomb drop accuracy then the B-52s by a fairly large margin.

I remember watching it at an airshow, EVERY single car, anywhere near the area, had their car alarms set off when it flew overhead super low because of the roar from the engines haha, amazing.

This thing was stationed at the airport only 300m from my house and all throughout the early 2010’s it made frequent flights over my house. 6 year old me was terrified by its howl every singe night

My Dad used to take me to the air shows at SAC in Bellevue, NE in the late 70's and through the 80's. They always seemed to have a Vulcan there and it was a awesome plane. It quickly became one of my favorites.
I understand the aircraft were based at SAC in the late 70’s early 80’s. It was the LOUDEST jet out of anything that flew back then, including the B-52’s and F-4’s that would fly in there on occasion.

I think the fact that so many comments are comparing this, a plane built in the 50s to planes built in the 80s, like the B2, shows how aheas of its time this beast actually was. People just aren't realising how old it is.
Fun fact. After designing the Lancaster bomber 10 yrs later he designed the Vulcan
10 years after the Vulcan, Avro ceased to exist... died out like the rest of the British aircraft industry.

My dad was part of the air cadets and worked on this plane. Because he was the smallest person in the group, he had the job of cleaning the jet fan blades. It a shame it isn't flight worthy anymore . If I remember correctly, there's only 1 flight worthy vulcan in the world left. It's such a beautiful plane, and I'm honoured to be able yo get up close to it and even have a sneek peak inside of it
The last one was finally grounded a few years ago - I had the good fortune to see one of its final displays.
My grandfather was one of the engineers that worked on this including the Avro Arrow.
And it made a good James Bond movie prop!

At Farnborough? I was there too.
RAF needed a spare part for a Vulcan for the Falklands war. The closest available part was on a museum bird at Castle AFB in California. Part was retrieved, repair made, mission completed. I've seen that donor Vulcan on display countless times.
During the 70s in airshows the vulcan would fly to an almost vertical stop and then "take off " vertically into the sky and make the ground shake under your feet

@@anzaca1 The Vulcan has no nose droop. It gives an impression it droops a bit when it taxys, but that's nothing to do with the fuselage, it's the length of the nosewheel.
The Vulcan is a beautiful aircraft. To be there as it flew was amazing, when she turned her tail at you, the howl and roar was impressive indeed.

Lucky enough to see these magnificent beasts at RAF Church Fenton airshow in 1982. The vibrations run through ones chest as they flew low and overhead. And saw concorde coming in to land at Leeds Bradford Airport. Truly amazing spectacles.
The RAF would visit Edwards AFB for the annual air show. It was always a treat to see the Vulan and heard the pilot's commentary over the PA.
Only the pilots had ejection seats.
In fairness the rest of the crew had a hatch on the underside to jump out of, in front of the front wheels if i remember right?

I got to see one of these up close and doing a flight demo at pease Air Force Base in New Hampshire around 1980. It was amazing all the maneuvers This huge plane could do!

Flew over low at almost stall speed opened up bomb doors below then hit the throttle and shot off shaking us all. Was unforgettable.

Intimidating until you see how it failed each strike it made. Yes, it worked at the limit of it's capabilitys, but actually Canberras unless hit an oiler.
I was lucky enough to work on XL426 for a year when I was younger. Sat in the extremely claustrophobic cockpit during a taxi run. This thing is terrifying not even at full power

Beautiful airplane. I saw one in a museum in the UK and it was really impressive up close. All these deep nuclear bombers were rendered obsolete by the ICBM.
SLBMs are cool
All bombers have been made obsolete by the missile. They don't require a human pilot, they cost cheaper, they fly faster, they can fly further, and tend to have a smaller radar cross section. The bomber is a thing of the past.

As an Air Force Cadet as a boy, watching this mighty bomber flying low at air shows made me love aircraft even more. There is no sound like it, even from larger planes.

The budget for the royal Air Force prohibited them from keeping up with the soviets and Americans after this period. The cost of the B1 and B2 alone was almost as much as the entire RAF budget during that same period of time. So they had to focus their resources on projects they could actually afford. They don’t have the tax base and their government doesn’t prioritize defense spending the same way that the Americans and soviets did during the height of the Cold War.
Britain was never a leader in avation and lagged behind other countries. The British aircraft industry was in a steep decline and has completely collapsed.

I was at a RAF base in Scotland in the mid eighties during a open day as a young boy on a death slide as they advertised it for the £ pounds per slide and just as I had reached the top of the scaffolding and as the instructor had given me my safety instructions a Vulcan in the show decided to go vertical full burners on and the my ears popped the scaffolding wobbled and the fear or the slide completely disappeared funnily enough and at that moment glad to be sliding down to safety. It was an unbelievably awesome noise and feeling to behold never to be forgotten.
Awesome machine. Most intimidating one I've seen up close in action was a B1B Lancer. I saw an unloaded one do a super tight 180 turn and then accelerate. I though to myself "If we can make something that badass then everyone else is fucked"

I'm proud to say my grandfather helped design and build the Vulcan at AVROs Woodford factory in Manchester. He was in the crew that flew the prototype around the world.
I went in a cockpit once. Crazy how you can see nothing out of a Vulcan without standing up. It is flown completely on instrumentation.
I remember these flying over at the Farnborough Airshow - the ground shook.
at RAF Scampton 79/80 I was on QRA guard during an exercise we had a four air craft scramble you cannot imagine four air craft, 8 engines producing over 320,000 pounds of thrust and being less than 50 yards away I took the only cover there was in a fire ditch the noise,the vibration it was overwhelming
My dad was the captain for the final flight of any Avro Vulcan.

Born and raised in Lincoln, the Nuclear Ready Squadron was based at nearby Waddington. Planes were in the air 24/7/365, bombed up and fueled for Moscow.
They used to turn over my school at the end of their patrols.
Fun fact, in wargames they got through America's defences to Washington not once but twice.

In terms of being an actual weapon system, no bomber is more intimidating than the B-2 and B-21. They’re not loud or flashy or fast, but if you’re the target you’ll never see it coming.

The only way to know a B-2 is bombing you is that you see an enormous signiture on radar for a few seconds that then disappears.
Most amazing sound in the world is the Vulcan howl.
It also holds the distinction of being the only bomber to "nuke" America twice, during operation skyshield

My favourite bomber of ours built the Airfix model as a youngster... at 45, it's still one of my top 5 favourite planes 🇬🇧
Got to see the last ever operational Vulcan fly up in Ayrshire Scotland on its final tour of the UK before it was grounded. The howl the air intakes make is just terrifying.

I've actually got mine, my dad's and my grandads names on one of the vulcans along with many other names. It is an amazing feeling knowing that you are part of such an amazing aircraft.
I spend my early career (Air Traffic Control) on Vulcans and Hastings (1066 Squadron) at RAF Scampton. Best three years of my service.
