That’s one of the best parts of lightsabers: the fact they can be turned on and off can create the most dramatic fight openings (Maul appearing in the corridor and turning on his double lightsaber on Naboo is another great example)
Man it's so cool to see the Force being used for more than just a push or trying to get an item dropped on someone in a lightsaber duel. The Obi Wan and Vader fight is one of my favorites
@@brucesnow7125 Mainly because they portrayed lightsabers as weightless, thus the fast movements. But as a consequence of getting rid of that concept for lightsabers, we have people swinging it like a baseball bat (Looks at sequal trilogy)
@@brucesnow7125 I dunno, disney sequel fights feel more like aimless flailing around with baseball bats. The choreography also leaves a lot to be desired.
Top three for me were: Obi-Wan vs Anakin and Yoda vs Darth Sidious (ROTS) Obi-Wan vs Darth Vader: Round 2 (Obi-Wan Kenobi) Luke Skywalker vs Darth Vader (ROTJ)
In the prequels, people swing the light sabres around effortlessly, which makes sense. In the sequels, it's as if light sabres suddenly became very heavy, or like you need to put in a lot of force for it to do any damage.
In the expanded media it is explained that lightsabers are actually hard to control. In the prequels there's a Jedi Order, training, in the sequels there's what Luke? Luke wasn't really ever that good with a Lightsaber in the original trilogy and since Disney doesn't like the Legends Canon he's not a God tier entity like he becomes in that media. So really just a lack of quality training leads to Jedi swinging big baseball bats made of light, much like a novice in actual HEMA would swing a sword like a bat. It's not really comparable. One time period has people with training and one time period there isn't really anyone around to do the teaching.
Also, Kylo Ren's lightsaber and spinning just seems like a good way to stab your own forearm on the crossguard. It seems like the crossguard is to make up for his own lack of ability to use it on the level of a great Jedi
@@justacommenterLittle nerding out here, but Kylo’s lightsaber has those cross guards as a safety measure. His kyber crystal is cracked and the cross guards act as vents to allow the excess energy to leave the lightsaber safely. Without it, the crystal could overload, badly injuring him in the process
@sorrenblitz805 you make a great point which I agree with, I've also found put recently that sabers aren't a solid beam like I always thought, the blade is much like a sword in that one side is sharp and the other is not and those properly trained know which is which, which is also why we see obi wan in the kenobi show battering people with his Saber like it's a bat and then turning around and slicing straight through others, so it's entirely possible that they are using the wrong side in the sequels cause they are not properly trained
@@sorrenblitz805 To me that just sounds like filling in details trying to fix plot holes after the fact of terrible writing and directing that are the sequel movies.
@spongebobsquarepants2981 it has some of the best technique displayed, plus the two went so fast that they had to slow down the fight in post I'm pretty sure. Definitely one of, if not the BEST fight in the franchise
I love that lucasfilm actually took time and care into these fights, and the choreography, like yoda vs sidious is kinda more skillful, slow, and masterful, while anakin vs obi-wan because of annakins anger it is more fast paced, while obi-wan also has to move fast to defend the attacks.
What’s funny to me is that while it’s much less flashy than pretty much every other duel, the battle between Obi-Wan and Vader on the Death Star is probably the most like an actual sword fight in the whole series.
Err kind of. The reason they're flashier in the prequels is because it's supposed to be duels at their prime, compared to the original where you have an old guy, a man who's part machine, and a guy still learning

@@jo_sh6798 I don’t think even Sidious knew about Anakin being his future apprentice at this point in the timeline. Plus, why would he tell Maul the real reason to target Anakin’s father-figure? At this point in the game, Sidious would want Maul to be thinking he’s the only option as his apprentice, not teasing that Maul is just a placeholder to him.
I remember when phantom menace first came out and Maul pulled out his double saber everyone in the theater was screaming. I loved the music that went with that fight…it matched it perfectly.
@azoouh7950 I don't. I watch them because of the story and because I love all of star wars. But Episodes 1 and 2 did not have good writing and dialogue. It's only saving grace was the action and the actors which were good but the script they were given wasn't.
That's what form 2 was good for, it was good for defending from opponents with lightsabers but was more poor for defending against an enemy with a blaster
I love how in the first Vader fight from obi-wan kenobi Vader is fighting with one hand, showing his confidence in and how he doesnt see his old master as threat, but in the second fight he switches to a two handed grip showing him realizing obi-wan is a threat
I think we finally got to see a live action fight where Vader had to put in maximum effort in Kenobi. His first fight with Luke, he was toying with him, and in Return of the Jedi he was essentially past his prime and in a state of decay. With the scene 38 Reimagined video we sort of get something we'd expect to be a bit more realistic to the characters, but it is always possible that age and living on a desert planet really had caught up to Obi-Wan in the following 10 years, either way, as awesome of an edit it is, it isn't official. Then of course we have the fights between Vader and Ahsoka in Rebels, or with Starkiller in Force Unleashed back when that was a thing, but that last fight in Kenobi, THAT was Vader at his best! And we finally got to see it not in CGI!
@@KyleWallPuncher True, but that's not because he needed to do it in order to win. He did it to show Luke just how powerless he really was against him.
Notice in the training fight between Anakin and Obi Wan, Anakin uses the same method at pushing Obi Wan down as Luke does when he fights Vader on the second Death Star.
My personal top 5 lightsabers duels: ( based on the choregraphy, environnement, emotions...) 1- Darth Vader Vs Obi-wan on mustafar 2- Darth Vader Vs Obi-wan ( kenobi final episode) 3- Luke skywalker Vs Darth Vader ROTJ 4- Luke Skywalker Vs Darth Vader ESB 5- Darth maul Vs Obi-wan / qui gon on Naboo
Yeah Vader is in most fights He was involved in the Battle of Naboo while Darth Maul was fighting Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan He duelled Count Dooku with Obi-Wan He was the antagonist of the Duel on Mustafar He again duelled Obi-Wan *twice* after the Duel on Mustafar, the second time being the victor He duelled Luke on Bespin and again during the Battle of Endor before redeeming himself
All of Anakin/Darth Vaders vs Obiwan Kenobis fights are by far my favorite out of the bunch. The ferocity there between them both is not because of two opposing sides, but of the bond they once shared as brothers not just in arms but in life, and the weight of it is very noticeable. 03:5210:18 & 14:00
Man watching the original trilogy’s fights was so nostalgic and it’s amazing to see how far we’ve come since then. The Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Vader especially as the first to the modern eras last
It's almost foreshadowing, Vader is definitely not fighting as aggressively as he does even in training and could've stopped the fight anytime he wanted but didn't
Or how Obi wan is Anakins/Vader's Achilles heel. He only realistically loses his composure and towering fear to him, because of his immense hatred for him.
That is like the most plot armor thing to happen in Star wars. Vader just has to be stronger considering they were evenly matched when anakin was 22 (not even close to his prime) and out of his mind... Idk about that show it destroyed power scaling even more in the franchise and I really want to ignore it.
I think your all forgetting that vaders suit is limiting his movement and force power and this was intentional on sidious’ part he wanted to be sure that Vader would never turn against him. So believe me if Vader wasn’t stuck in that suit he wouldn’t have lost against obi. Also anakin has every right to have immense hatred towards obi, HE CUT HIM IN HALF AND LEFT HIM TO DIE, I’d say that’s plenty of reason to hate him so much.
The duel between obi wan and vader is one of the best it uses the choreograph of the prequels while also utilizing the story tension and force capability of the original trilogy.
I just realized the importance of the high ground. Darth Maul had the high ground and lost and im sure Obi-Wan told Anakin this so in ROTS Anakin tried to show is power despite Obi-Wan having the high ground. Trying to show he can overcome not having it just like Obi-Wan did vs maul. Interesting
I know I shouldn’t judge the ‘a new hope’ lightsaber duel between Obiwan and Vader too harshly, but seeing it right after the last fight in the obiwan show is tough 😂
The prequels showed much of the lightsaber duels be more quicker and badass with the style of sword styles of samurai and kendo. 5:44- 8:02 Badass moments of Anakin using double lightsabers in episode 2 and 3 6:27 Yoda Giving the most badass way to start a lightsaber duel 6:35-9:52 Prequels given the best things of Yoda kicking more ass with his lightsaber 10:20-12:02 A big fact that Hayden and Ewan Prepped for this duel has made this sequence even the most best one
Now we know why Vader vs. Obi-wan in A New Hope was so conservative. Obi-wan was genuinely old and Vader was genuinely cautious (because of his beating in the Kenobi show).
Gotta be honest, the Obi-Wan vs Darth Vader in the Obi-Wan series wasn’t half bad compared to Disney’s past battles. I actually did feel some emotion which is COMPLETELY different from what I felt in the sequel trilogy.
At least in disney séries and movie they try to hit the opponent and dont almost give the win to the opponent (like maul who let obi want jump above him and look Him do without trying anything , and anakin when he...open his two arms to make à hug at dooku and get his arms cut off.....)
Vader and kenobi’s second duel from the show is probably one of my favorite duels in the entire franchise. I mean Vader looked so epic in this scene, props to the costume department for this show. The choreography for this scene was impressive, not as crazy as their revenge of the sith duel, but still powerful. To see Obi wan so determined to take Vader down was very enjoyable to watch. He then kicks Vaders ass and we get to see Hayden’s face under the mask as Anakin was chilling. Very well done
You know what I've realized after watching this? Lightsabers from the Prequels and Original Trilogy don't glow like they do now. I mean, sure, they have color, and are described as the bright swords that can cut through anything, but they didn't quite glow like they with the Sequels and more modern shows. They didn't bloom out onto the environment and actors, and they didn't light up a whole room. Working with LED and maybe even NEO sabers really do change up how the lightsaber works, it seems.
No duel in Star Wars history has still come close to topping Obi Wan and Qui Gon vs Maul. One of the things that makes it especially intense is Obi Wan vs Maul. You see the intensity not just in Obi Wan's face, but his combat. He's emotional, he's angry. He jumps into the fight throwing away caution entirely; all he wants to do is take this guy's head off. I rarely ever see that in duels these days. Most of the time it's just a nostalgia trip. Everyone's cool and collected, and I think it ruins that human element that brings you into the scene. I miss the intensity of emotions expressed in the combat that you see in the Obi Wan vs Maul fight.
I know dooku and sidious aren't usually touted for their lightsaber defense but I think it's underrated how they both can fight yoda to proficiency because his style is so different. You have to have absolute focus to be able to see that shit coming
It’s actually I think from the comics. Something called the Sith’s Screech or Scream It basically disorients opponents and makes them easy targets hence why those two died so quickly.
I like how the third time Obi-Wan fights Vader, there are rougher versions of the same combos they once trained together with, only with more aggression and less formality, showing the effects of years away from the Order, simultaneous with the "like it was yesterday" feelings of disappointment they both have in each other as "failed master" and "failed apprentice".
what I love about the scene in 6:19, Anakins choreography looks like he opens up just to be cut like that. even before the counts hits him. he just opens up before by a lot like Jesus on the cross lol
Obi-Wan going god mode and pelting Vader with rocks before going Ashoka on him and cutting his mask open was the highlight of their final fight in my opinion
I've just realised how much Obi vs Vader ustilies the force and I love it. It makes so much sense to use it in battle to give an advantage. Also I loved how Vader just touched the ground and it crumbled.
The graphics woulda been better, yes, but the choreography used in the Prequel Trilogy compared to now is so different that I don’t think the choreography would be the same if that scene had been filmed in 2022
Vader's first duel with Luke went in three phases, almost like he was putting Luke through the Trials. First phase: Skills with a Lightsaber. Second Phase: Knowledge of the Force. Third Phase: Will, Strength, and Resolve against the Dark Side.
This is also because in ep 1 his lightsaber form was form 4 (Ataru) (same as Qui-Gon), very aggressive and with fast movements (drawback: quicker loss of stamina). Then after Qui-Gon's death he decided to switch to form 3 (Soresu), much more defensive. So that's also part of the reason why his moves are not as quick in ep 2-3 duels
15:39 "that is why you will always LOSE!" Pretty sure this was Kenobi's second win over Skywalker, and then in their third fight Skywalker gets his only win because Kenobi LETS HIM.
Had the same thought. Also, I didn’t see your observation mentioned in any of the several comments I read, until I got to yours. Personally, and having just watched the whole video, the Ahsoka duel has my favorite sound effects out of all of them. The sound effects crew really had fun with that one. They gave her white-bladed lightsabers a really unique sound, and punched it up with how that duel sounded, when they clashed against Magistrate’s metal (beskar?) staff. Was listening with earbuds, and those crazy noises swirled all around, coming from all different directions in the left & right channels. That gets an A+ from me, for their creative work. Cool stuff, that keeps getting better.
I can't believe how Anakin basically lost every of his major Lightsaber duels except for one. Vader also lost a lot or times. In total 5 losses and 4 wins.
0:40 I especially love this fight. It was the first time we saw an activated double ended lightsaber on screen. 3:37 Obi-Wan actually tapped into the dark side to do this move, which I was surprised to hear. 4:21 and 15:35 Anakin is a great fighter as himself or Vader. Much like Revan before him, Anakin is a fine leader and an honorable opponent on the light and dark sides.
It's so weird seeing Obi-Wan versus Darth Vader the second fight where they're throwing rocks jumping and then watching and then watching the Obi-Wan versus Darth Vader on the death Star and they're like man Star wars has came a long way since then

Also the final dual in the Obi wan tv show if u notice there are some similar moves that they use in their training session. Amazing attention to detail
im surprised no one has said this yet but the two Luke v. I love it where Palpatine before he becomes the Senator he says "I AM the Senate" and windu says "not yet" then Palpatine rises, ignites his lightsaber and says calmly as ever "It is treason then" and then starts the fight, such a badass beginning to a fight 👍
@charlie1486 I remember when I watched it in the cinema and was completely thrown off by how QUICK Sidious was when he leaped off his chair.
Then proceeded to do a 920 degree spin like a freaking drill.
I also love that swings and attacks feel visceral and powerful. I love fights in Prequels, but they often lack that grit.

@@hiveemperor54 oi that's cheating lol

Yep.. true Disney ignores the power of the lightsaber and everything looks rushed

One thing that I noticed in TPM in the final duel is that Maul seems to be mainly going for Qui Gon, it seems like Obi Wan is an afterthought
Maul is arrogant. Why would he care about a lowly Padawan Learner when the Master is right there.
Obi-wan was a Padawan. The real threat was the actual Jedi Knight (according to Maul and Sidious’s arrogance)
@@dukes1993724 I was getting at more so the fact they he might’ve been told the whole plan by Sidious, in that taking out the future master of Anikan, damaging him and him being left with a brother figure rather than a father figure, slowly breaking him down to the dark side. @@jo_sh6798 I don’t think even Sidious knew about Anakin being his future apprentice at this point in the timeline. Plus, why would he tell Maul the real reason to target Anakin’s father-figure? The fact that Darth Vader lost to obi Wan twice just shows how strong obi Wan really is
Or how Obi wan is Anakins/Vader's Achilles heel.
Nah obi wan is just the perfect counter to anakin and his style
@@bowbowbowbow6007 exactly
I think your all forgetting that vaders suit is limiting his movement and force power and this was intentional on sidious’ part he wanted to be sure that Vader would never turn against him. So believe me if Vader wasn’t stuck in that suit he wouldn’t have lost against obi. Also anakin has every right to have immense hatred towards obi, HE CUT HIM IN HALF AND LEFT HIM TO DIE, I’d say that’s plenty of reason to hate him so much.
The duel between obi wan and vader is one of the best it uses the choreograph of the prequels while also utilizing the story tension and force capability of the original trilogy.
yes because it shows how the Prequel era ends and the OT era begins
Which one?
I just realized the importance of the high ground. Darth Maul had the high ground and lost and im sure Obi-Wan told Anakin this so in ROTS Anakin tried to show is power despite Obi-Wan having the high ground. Trying to show he can overcome not having it just like Obi-Wan did vs maul. Interesting
Maul lost on Naboo because he didn't understand his advantage with the high ground.
"Twice the pride, double the fall" - Count Dooku to Anakin. "You underestimate my power!" - Anakin to Obi-wan.
I know I shouldn’t judge the ‘a new hope’ lightsaber duel between Obiwan and Vader too harshly, but seeing it right after the last fight in the obiwan show is tough 😂
They just aged really poorly and have limited movement.
The prequels showed much of the lightsaber duels be more quicker and badass with the style of sword styles of samurai and kendo.

AaaaaAaaaaAAAAH
It’s actually I think from the comics. Something called the Sith’s Screech or Scream
It basically disorients opponents and makes them easy targets hence why those two died so quickly.
