    My dear departed grandma worked as an extra on several of the PA films. Said Graf (Tackleberry) was a wonderful man who always went out of his way to ensure the extras were treated well.

    Since we're on the subject of Police Academy references, here's another one of The Simpsons jabs at it:
    "Boy, when Marge first told me she was going to the police academy I thought it'd be fun and exciting.
    You know, like that movie Spaceballs.
    Instead it's been painful and disturbing, like that movie Police Academy.
    "

    Maybe the humour of this film (basically the humor of the 80s) could be offensive and outdated to the new generations, but this is the kind of film that you never get tired of watch, as the same as its crazy characters and surreal jokes.
    One of the best comedies from that decade. I enjoyed it with my parents in VHS and of course I'll enjoy it with my children

    The first Police Academy movie is my number 1 favourite film of all-time. I must have seen it hundreds of times. Whenever I had a sleepover with my friends, we would rent a couple of videos (this being the mid-80s, there was a wide choice available) and Police Academy would have to be one of the tapes we got out. The subsequent movies gradually became less enjoyable because they were made with a family audience in mind (I believe from the 2nd movie onwards, they got PG ratings, meaning young kids could watch as long as a "responsible adult" was there with them).

      @JaxenRossisback 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sha11235 I second that. To be fair, the other ones going past the first film aren’t really noteworthy. Don’t give me wrong, PAs 2 thru 4 have their moments - but it doesn’t excuse the fact that they are one dimensional, paint-by-the-number stories. The characters are just there to perform their actions, they never really bond and don’t have any set goals to make them human and for the audience to root for them (apart from the first one). The only valid reason that these movies have proven profitable is just because of the visual aspect - particularly making it accessible for those who don’t speak English (i.e. Mr. Bean).

      I watched part one, two and three, countless times. It was hilarious when I was a kid, and as I grew up, there were more jokes I didn't get that made it very rewatchable.

      I agree that it's not on par with Airplane! or Blazing Saddles, but those are spoof movies. And Police Academy is a more subtle spoof, as it's not throwing references and jokes every other line of dialogue.
      It's a time capsule type of movie, that really shouldn't work. I think they were going for a Animal House/Caddyshack, with the police setting and premise.

    This, and maybe the first 3 sequels, were all loved by friends and family. Great 80's comedy film, I would put up there with the best of 'em. They really don't make great comedies like this anymore. I feel like American Pie was the last of the truly funny movies :(

    What got me into the series was actually my father who at the time these were coming out was an instructor at the Illinois State Police Academy. He'd gladly remember how I named my Duplo characters after the characters from the movie including Mahoney, Jones, Sweetchuck, Mauser and Tackleberry.

      No. He's Mahoney's first partner. He has a dog, and his apartment was a mess. He picks a Nestle Crunch up, wipes ants off it, then eats it.
      I can't find that scene, but here's Mahoney meeting him.

    I saw Police Academy in theaters back in the day and it was a hoot. It had been on cable often since and I still stop to watch it. I stopped after the 4th or 5th film but the first will still be the best. It's nice to know a little more about the film and how it got made.
    I was wondering if you'd consider doing an "Exploring" video for America 3000? I know you did a great review for it, but I found some interesting info about it which would make a great companion piece to it.

    I grew up with the first one, saw it first time when I was less than 6, and loved it since. My daughter also loves it and she first saw it around when she was the same age I was. It’s special cause she only focuses on the funny parts and isn’t really concerned about the more adult parts. Though she, as I did, realizes that some characters and situations are bad and wrong since they’re so well and simply outlined, and she really needed little to be explained of it, as it was for me. And she adores the music! Sadly they don’t write nor make movies this well anymore

    I'm so glad I grew Up in the 80s with films like this. Watching Police Academy, The Goonies, Princess Bride, Nothing But Trouble and so many more amazing films, gave me a great respect for film making. Most of the time things were done for real, practical effects and barely any CGI because computers weren't a thing yet. Special FX makeup was a skill and practical effects added to the art. Movies now are missing those 2 key elements that made things seem so genuine back then.

    My family and I practically wore the VHS out! As for the backlash, I think it's easier for people to say "these movies aren't funny and you should feel bad for enjoying them" instead of, "despite the later films veering off course, the original and early sequels are still hilarious."

      It was the time when people don't know better. Thanks to internet more people dgaf toward "high brow" movie reviewers. The best example is Netflix series of Marcopolo. The "Professional critics" hate it but viewers completely love it.

    • @cjwrench07
      @cjwrench07 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      You have to remember, critics can see anywhere from 75 to 300 movies a year. So, things like the stupid movie tropes that we don’t notice or mind, are just an example of unoriginal thought to them.
      Plus, Siskel was always known for mostly ignoring comedies. His favourites would have been the modern movies from an actor like Daniel Day-Lewis. And when you are comparing something like. Lincoln. To Police Academy. It isn’t really a competition at all. And being a comedy, isn’t a good excuse for the overall stilted acting in this movie.
      Don’t get me wrong. I absolutely love this movie. And I have tons of nostalgia for this entire series.

    It took me years to finally realize and notice how common it was for Hollywood movies, big budget or otherwise, to be filmed in Toronto where I live and grew up. I just would always recognize familiar streets, locations and landmarks but didn't think nothing of it. Thought maybe cities were just built in similar ways. lol There wasn't an internet to look it up obviously and I wasn't a big enough geek at the time to do actual research.
