@@NeedyForMusic its an ongoing joke that viola players in most orchestras dont have any tone and you can barely hear them play xD. Like back in high school, you could not hear the violas unless everyone started playing PPPPP hahahah
Thank you for your octave strings video. I have already removed the E string from my violin and put a C string on the lower peg. So, after watching your video l will buy a set of octave strings and put them on my old, beloved German violin which has a big 'belly' so should enjoy chomping on the lower notes. Many thanks! Sheila x😊
These strings drop the violin one octave, from G3, D4, A5, and E5 to G2, D3, A4, and E4. A viola's register is C3, G3, D4, and A5; 1/5th lower than a violin. The cello's is C2, G2, D3, and A4. So if you put these on a viola, the register would be the same as a cello. Putting these on a violin makes it 1/5th higher than the cello, so playing the cello repertoire would be slightly different than normal.
So fun to see you finally try the octave strings! I'm still in doubt whether to get a cheap violin to install mine on, or to sell them and put octave strings on my viola. The first option is easier, but the low C string is just unmissable imo if you want a cello sound.
I don't know if this has been addressed, but if you would like a richer sound use a slower wider vibrato. Also using a violin bow with that light rosen should be fine. a viola bow may be overkill. Best wishes
The sounds you are hearing are called wolf tones, this happens when you have two frequencies cancelling each other (strings and the wood), very common in cellos, less common in violins but possible too. Also it’s not true cello range as these strings can’t replicate the low C, even if they could, a violin is too small to handle that.
@UCMGf-4TZDqNG97yqY5WPTCA D'addario is working on a Helicore Octave Violin Low C String, as well as fractional sized Octave Strings. These Strings sound fantastic on 4/4 Size Student Violins cause having fine tuners facilitates tuning them. I just found out that these strings are exactally twice the thickness of standard strings.
When I started to play violin, I would get a violin with Dominants and so I used them because that is what came on them. Later when I tried Tonicas, I liked them better and more importantly they sounded good to me longer than Dominants. When the price of Dominants basically doubled and Tonicas stayed the same, my decision was made for me. Now I usually will start a new violin with Tonicas and then might change to something else, but it gives me a starting point to see if I want to go darker or brighter or what not. It is good to have a consistent starting place. I also love that they are not a premium priced string.
I just bought a cello (I already play violin) and I'm having the same issues bowing. Even with a thicker bow, you have to put a lot more pressure on the strings cause they're so thick!!! Nice job :)
I want to do this to my current violin when I get an upgrade! Thank you for doing this video - I really didn't know what to expect getting into octave strings.
YAS The penciling of the bridge AND the nut is super necessary! (You were unsure about the nut) the point of that is to help the string slide smoothly over both when tuning ☺️ Also! I would recommend tightening your bow and using more weight and playing closer to the bridge. This should help the tone that you’re having difficulty with!
With the bow it’s less about speed and more about pressure. Try making out the loudness and then the quietness and then find the middle. When you get that wispy sound it’s because you don’t have enough weight in the down. Drop your elbow it should help! Love a viola player! You sound really good for never having played that low.
I'm super inspired to get a viola, with octave strings. Full cello register. Maybe a 5th string on top to also have the high range of Noobie's octave violin. And since these buggers are such a pain to buy and set up, I'll try to offer complete outfits of reasonably optimized octave instruments. A 14" viola for violin players, better sound on the G than a similar price violin would reasonably achieve. And 15" and 16" violas, for the maximum cello for the buck. Still portable, still affordable. No sacrificing an unloved violin with meh tone properties, just getting a dedicated instrument that's about as good as it gets for the price and purpose.
I recommend you get a CodaBow Joule and also Dark Kaplan Rosin. Dark Rosin is stickier so it helps with gripping the strings (Kaplan Premium Rosin is basically Synthetic Rosin), and with a CodaBow Joule it weighs twice as much as a Standard Violin Bow. Carbon Fiber Bows are stronger so they hold up better.
I have the same prob with guitar strings I like, can't get them in stores I can drive too. They only order from distributors in the same country n many are not carried by those distributors.
As a cellist, doesn't quiet sound the same and the highest string sound slightly out of time. But besides that I'm honestly impressed. I never thought a violin could get that low.... it's not quiet a cello because cello can reach deeper sounds because of how big it is. But just wow

helicore octave strings are 56$ on amazon, which shouldn't be much more than what you're already paying for strings. If you're buying 20$ or less strings then you're getting ripped off, one of the easiest ways to get a better tone out of your instrument is to just buy high quality strings and is worth the extra money. Like honestly if you ever buy a nice set you won't ever want to go back to the cheap strings, I highly recommend setting aside some money for nice strings.
