Does God help athletes to win games?

  • Our listener asks, "Pastor Jesse,
Last Sunday, Scottie Scheffler won the
Masters. In his interviews and print
media he said ‘I just wanted to Glorify
    God.’
My question is this: How does it Glorify God when a
    Christian athlete wins a competition?
What if the runner up is also a
Christian, but he did not win? Does
that mean that God did not favor him
to win? Maybe he did not pray hard
enough! (sarcastic humor). I think you know what I’m trying to
get at. It’s not like the Calvinistic view
of ‘God controls everything and even
    controls our destiny and actions.’
I guess it’s like a friend of mine after a
    different person won a golf
tournament, and he said ‘God helped
me win.’ Upon hearing that, my friend said,
‘Does that mean that God was against
    the other player?'" Thanks,
    Mike

This man is my favorite pastor that I've ever listened to. I just wish that I lived in Tampa, Florida, so I could attend that church. Unfortunately, TH-cam and Bible line Ministries online will have to do, because I live all the way up here in ohio. Thank you, Pastor Jesse for keeping it simple, clear and loud enough for all to hear. 🙂

At the time of this comment we have about 9000 subs, and I would be amiss to say you’re my favorite. The others wouldn’t like that 👀🤣
      We love our subs though!
Thanks for the kind words. We just want more people to hear and believe the gospel of Jesus Christ!
If not here on earth, then we’ll see each other in heaven!!

My opinion is that God gave us all abilities, and it’s up to us to use them. I personally think that there will probably be sports competitions in the Kingdom, because those of us that love sports will likely always love sports. I have competed in many sports and my belief is that God does not care who wins. We are told to do everything, even eating and drinking, for the glory of God. I’m no longer an athlete, but my conviction remains the same. We compete to win for the love of the game, and whoever is the best on that particular day wins. Ideally, the winners and losers both give glory to God and know in their hearts that the talent given to them enabled them to even be playing. I hope and believe that there will be competition in the Kingdom, and we all hang out together afterwards. I just don’t think that competition is bad or sinful in any way, and I see no reason why it would cease. It’s fun. God is not about taking any fun away from us. So no, I don’t believe God cares or determines who wins….I think that effort and execution determine wins and losses. Those of the world compete because it’s the end all, and even if they win the Super Bowl, it’s ultimately unfulfilling. Believers compete for the glory of God and love of the sport, and find their fulfillment in Christ, win or lose. Just my opinions of course. But I fully expect there to be sports in the Kingdom. And if I’m wrong, 1 Cor 2:9 tells me that life in the Kingdom will be just fine without college football Saturdays, which are considered holidays to me.

    Interesting question
The athletes take their golden trophies home, make millions of $$$, can be for the prosperity gospel for example. Many give praise to God, but for example movie stars winning their little gold idol/oscar and I believe many say god, meaning little g. god.

@@BibleLine Here is my prediction. The Dolphins are in the Super Bowl. They are down by 1 point in the 4th quarter. 4th and goal and the 1 yard line with only 2 seconds left in the game. After they get out of the huddle, they get up on the line, snap the ball and then the rapture takes place. 😂

I’m sorry if this is a silly question but if every time you try to believe the gospel your mind wants to make a prayer does that mean your not saved because I’m not trying to make one my mind kinda just makes one I’m trying to trust in Christ alone it is just hard to know if I actually believed since my mind wants to make a prayer to save me every time I try to believe I’m sorry if this is a silly question

Everytime we pray God hears it. So never hurts to pray. We will learn as we go. God will correct us. Lord’s Prayer is daily. Repentance is daily. Being filled is daily. Never feel bad for over praying.

just depend on the Holy Spirit. That is why God sends Him to live inside every believer upon salvation. He is Gods seal, and our evidence we have been saved. He is our teacher and helper here on earth. The Holy Spirit brings us into a relationship with Jesus, and intercedes for us in prayer. Without the Holy Spirit, its impossible to please God. We will never find our purpose in Christ without Him. He is the Key. We must depend on the Holy Spirit to guide us

Never was a 'Sports' Enthusiast though I like Sports Nostalgia, ( ie Ernie Banks, CUBS, Hoosiers...)
I observe most other Believers, have obsession with Sports (Though I had obsession with cinema, although my interest in modern fil has waned) I dwell in Bible Study, and understanding Salvation as I toil in this life. I dare to say that the True Heros at Judgement Seat of Christ will be the 'nobody's' of this world .
As far as OP, Most of the best True Believers with Celebrity Status have shallow, lukewarm walk at best. Late Tom Landry may be exception

Riches, fame and power definitely affect believers in Christ too. It’s a shame. Nonetheless, we pray for these men and women!

@@BibleLineIt can go the other way also. People who are neglected and forgotten can struggle in their faith just as much as those who are in the spotlight. Everyone has their own burden to bear. I can't decide which would be worse, but God will be glorified either way. I never wanted to be popular, let alone famous, but sometimes I wonder if it would be better than having nobody there at all.

Could you make a video on the types of Jesus' in our day. So that we can discern false christs from the true Lord Jesus?
How might a false teacher hide his "message of lies" to deceive the believer?

Yes and yes. If we don't hear the good news, we can not choose to believe it. "The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;" - Mark1:1. "How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?" - Romans 10:14. "And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come." - Matthew 24:14.

Yes. You have to believe in Jesus Christ who paid for your sin by his death on the cross, burial and resurrection.

In the sense you are speaking is being set free from bondage of Sin and the demons. So yea.
But as we see many non believers don’t have many demons bc they don’t get into dark stuff. But everyone has some issues that without the gospel we will not be free.

doesnt it say that even the devil believes. I think it takes more than just belief. You must repent and put your full trust and faith in Christ. And you must have the Holy Spirit. Many people profess to be Christians, but they dont possess the Holy Spirit. I believed in Jesus my whole life, but it wasnt until I turned 22 that I truly became a Holy Spirit-filled born again believer. So simply saying you believe in Jesus means nothing, until you show the fruit of the Spirit in your life. Thats the evidence

Does God prefer one team over another? I would have to say no. All of the NFL teams are made up of people and God loves all people. He is no respecter of persons and I don't think He picks favorites according to their team jersey. God loves us all the same and He doesn't have any teams that He hates....except for the 49ers!!!
