      I think you need to be like 120 lbs or something. Remember when you were a kid and didn't weigh nothing how you felt really light and could jump around and take falls like nothing? I think Americans in general are too big and heavy, we aren't built for this game.

  • @wildatheart8894
    @wildatheart8894 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2776

    I am Vietnamese American and I know about this game. It’s called differently in Vietnamese. “DA CAU”
    But overall, Thai is the most dominant team. Most of these guys usually were black belts in some sort of Martial Art styles when they were young.
    And they learnt how to fall, kick and spin properly when they were young. Then they picked up the game and excelled really fast.
    Love it Jomboy! Keep up the good work.

    • @wildatheart8894
      @wildatheart8894 4 ปีที่แล้ว +84

      Jonathan Hill yeah. Hard court it is. The reason is they need a solid platform to launch from. Dirt or sand can produce some slippery.
      Also, if you look closely, when they fall down, they rolled from their arms to their backs. Just similar to those who do break dancing and perform stuns.
      But concussion is very common too. Honestly, do your own research if you can. Hope this helps

    I got to play this sport for a couple years in my early 20s when I was active duty. We obviously weren't Olympic caliber, but I played with some very competitive players. It was intense, and it was a lot of fun. I'm 45 now. About 3 years ago I tried to play again, and it took me less than 30 seconds to realize I was going to end up in the hospital...and I was playing on grass. 😭

      They aren't expensive. I've seen them occasionally in stores in the US. I still have an old rattan ball that I got when I lived in Thailand in the very early 80s. I never saw plastic balls back then - don't know if anyone had started making those yet. I'm a little bit surprised that the official international competitions don't still use the rattan balls, considering how conservative sports can be. The plastic balls don't have exactly the same feel, but I'm sure they are more consistent and more durable than the old balls.

Maybe not as many bicycle kicks, but it was nuts to see how good they were - even at a casual get-together. I imagine they were chuckling to themselves watching the stoners kick a little bag of leather.

  • @GreyFox23
    @GreyFox23 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    In all fairness to baseball players, they are fairly inactive through most of the game. Their fitness comes from being able to perform some pretty high level athletics and physically stressful mechanics in short burst with minimal warm up. So it's not surprising if they pull muscles or you hear them suffering from muscle, bone and nerve strain. In more active sports your body stays warm, your muscles are loosened up and your brain generally on pace with the speed the game moves at.
    And yes, Takraw players are just more comfortable falling. You are usually always spinning when trying to score, be it bicycle kick or swinging side kick, so they always carry that momentum so instead of falling, they are more often rolling. You can also see that with that rolling motion they use their hands and arms a lot to cushion and continue the rolling momentum til they are either back on their feet or on their chest so they can push themselves up. It's liking doing a bad cartwheel as opposed to trying to catch yourself doing a belly flop. The horizontal movement of the cartwheel will be easier on your hands and arm while the vertical movement of the belly flop is just gonna hurt even if you catch yourself with your arms.
