One of the many instances where we’ll never know if the outcome would’ve been different had the correct call been made. Even if Wilmer struck out on the next pitch, it wouldn’t have felt as bad as this one. It really sucks that the Giants season had to end on a shitty strike call for the 2nd consecutive year
@@CrAzY6tothe6 we will never know for sure. Too many other variables. He could’ve gotten lucky and finally get a hit. Could’ve been walked. Could’ve been hit by pitch. But it is what it is.
Yeah honestly if Wilmer struck out honestly, this wouldn’t be anything. The Giants stranded like 20 runners on base in these 5 games. Wilmer’s at-bat isn’t why they lost, but it’s what will be remembered.
@@CrAzY6tothe6 That's not the point and not the spirit of baseball. For example, in a hypothetical, alternate universe, people like you would have said the same thing to the 2011 Cardinals if a similar call was made in game 6 before David Freese walks it off Sure Wilmer probably would have got out, but the beauty of baseball is that maybe he finally beats Scherzer and crushes one 450 feet dead center. But we'll never know
Bryant 5 balls in first inning resulting in a strikeout is another major turning point. Ump card had the game +.68 runs, meaning in theory dodgers won 2 to 1.68.
@@christopherniceley8848 what about the walk that was denied to Bryant in the bottom if the 4th? That was also a clearly terrible call, and would have given the Giants two men on, no outs-and more than likely led to a run. Definitely would have changed the game.
I’m a huge Giants fan. Hear me out. Yes, this was the bullshit ending and the Umps were really terrible through the series. Angel Hernandez? Really? The bottom line is though we beat ourselves. We did NOT hit the balls we needed to hit. Our great pitching did not have the run support it needed. We should have scored just as many runs as the Dodgers, we didn’t. Scoring no more than 4 runs against another 100 win team is not acceptable even with great pitching. Our defense bailed us out this series. This final strike was poetic honestly. It sucks, but this loss is just as much on the Giants than the Umps. Regardless, I’m very proud of my Giants. This was a fantastic season that just ended on a downer note. But I’m hopeful for next season. Unlike the 49ers who always find ways to disappoint me.
I'm a giants fan, and I definitely agree. You can't discount the fact that the Dodgers have maybe the most dominant pitching force in the last decade in their starting rotation and their bullpen, and it's pretty dang hard to hit any of those guys even without all of the confidence they were riding high on, holding the Giants to almost no runs across 3 or 4 games. The call sucks, and as much as I'm bummed that our season ended that way, I feel for the Dodgers fans that were robbed of a little bit of finality to their well-deserved win. They're a much better team than the Giants, especially on paper, but I was really banking on our ragtag bunch of misfits to come through and take down the goliath. Oh well -- maybe in another decade we can win another NL West title lol.
I agree to an extent, problem is the umps were dog shit and our team has been notorious all year of working counts and that’s hard to do when balls clearly off the side plate are getting called all night but the giants were not getting those same calls. Usually you find a get back ball or strike but it was super one sided all night
A season ending in any scenario sucks but for it to end in that way including all the questionable calls earlier in the game is even more gut wrenching
@@SpicyTrifongo On July 22, the Dodgers, were up 3-2 with two out in the ninth inning. Kenley Jansen threw a full count pitch with the bases loaded. Darin Ruf tried to hold up his swing but clearly went around. That was a 3-2 pitch with the bases loaded. If it’s a swing and a miss on a Kenley Jansen throw, it’s game over and the Dodgers get a huge win as they chase the Giants in the tight NL West. First-base umpire Ed Hickok said he did not swing. Tying run walked home. The Giants eventually won the game 5-3.
@@papadopp3870 Yea I watched that game. That was a makeup call for the blown strike call before that. Look I don't expect a lot out of the denizens of Los Angeles or Dodger fans in particular, but that ain't it. Not even close to comparable, for multiple reasons. It didn't end the game, it didn't end the season, and the dodgers had a chance to win it after the call was made. Brilliant comparison otherwise, yes they were both baseball games.

MLB looks really good when the first base umpire basically says he was guessing. Catchers are going to ask for appeals on anything that looks remotely close to a swing and just hope that the umpire gets the wrong call.
All the more reason swings/strike zone calls should be robotic at this point.. Can never have a single person use the "judgement call" argument ever again
@@brettlewis2900 Never should it be robotic. People make mistakes, wrong calls are made. That's apart of life. The worst call of the game should have been ball 4 on Kris Bryant, called a strike at his ANKLES! Would have been first and second, then the wild pitch second and third. Home plate ump was GARBAGE
You missed the best Sherzer moment: him holding Doc as he screams in his face and Doc trying to escape his clutches to no avail. Love me some Mad Max. Go Dodgers!
Dave Roberts said in his postgame that Scherzer was lobbying him to pitch in Game 5 for the last couple of days. I imagine him peeking into his windows at home lol
True. The strike zone was horrible for both teams. As poor as Max Scherzer was early in his first start, he lost a lot of potential strikes. The same could be said for the Giants in Game 4. I really don't want a robo ump, but at the rate guys like Angel Hernandez and Doug Eddings are going, they may just wind up doing it to themselves.
That's why they're going to lose. It'll work sometimes but when they get to the world series nobody will know who's job is what and Robert's will make the wrong call like he has so many times before. They'll run out of pitchers. They're just super lucky they got Scherzer

Ump has a point-if you’ve ever umped, it can be a very slippery call. It happens fast and the definition of a swing isn’t exactly a black and white thing. Yes I think he blew it, but I’ve seen worse blown calls
I don’t think the ump had any bad intention, and he has the best seat in the house for playoff baseball, i highly doubt he wanted to end the game cause he wanted to go home sooner. His explanation seemed honest, and it’s a hard call to make from the other side of the field when it’s close.
It is an absolute insult to Umpires when you diminish their work ethic when you say they make bad calls in a pressure filled situation late in the game just to "go hom early" take a moment to be in their shoes.
Don't forget the check swing call in favor of the Giants in the regular season that gave them a run and got Dave Roberts ejected. That game gave the Giants home field advantage for this series. This check swing call is just poetic justice. We also need a breakdown on Bellinger choking up on the bat to get out of a slump. How long has he been doing this?
Time doesn't work that way. If that check swing was called correctly in the regular season, it becomes a new timeline: in that new world, Dodgers go on to win that game, but then they have an epic collapse and lose their position to the Padres.
Damn I didn’t know the Giants were that close to a walkoff home run. I didn’t get to see the game that night. I don’t know what would suck more. That brutal check swing call or that foul ball that went the distance.
This should have been the NLCS and should have gone 7. It's a travesty that it was a divisional series instead. MLB really needs to reseed after the wildcard game, or go back to the rule of no two teams from the same division in a divisional series, like it was back when they first introduced the wildcard and went to 3 divisions per league. I don't see anybody else talking about this. The fans were truly cheated. These are probably the 2 best teams in baseball, and to have them face each other so early in the playoffs is a disservice.
The fact that Flores failed to swing on the 87 mph slider UP IN THE ZONE . . . total sweet-spot pitch, a legit mistake pitch by Mad Max . . . takes some of the sting out of it. In an alternate reality, Wilmer hits that pitch 500 feet, and then Scherzer is lamenting in post-game interviews about how badly he hung that one pitch that cost them the trip to the NLCS. When Flores wakes up in the middle of the night covered in sweat after dreaming again about that at bat, it will be failing to pull the trigger on pitch 1 that haunts him. All that said -- no fucking way that was a swing on the SO. Lame ending.
The bad call was in the 4th inning when Bryant had a 3-1 count and the ump called a strike on a pitch that was clearly out of the strike zone - even Bryant had to restrain himself. That was ball four and would have put Crawford and Bryant on 1st and 2nd with no outs. The next batter was thrown a wild pitch, which would have moved both runners up to 2nd and 3rd, no outs. The ground out was deep enough to allow Crawford to score and move Bryant to third. Could have been a big inning for the Giants. JMO.
Im not saying you are wrong BUT...when you play with time travel you never know what the results will be. Sure Bryant would have walked, but who is to say the rest of the inning would have played out the same way. The wild pitch may never have happened had Bryant walked. Maybe the pitcher would have given himself a peptalk in his head after the walk and never thrown that pitch.
@@darkduck3677 and even if the wild pitch happens, with runners at 2nd and 3rd with a base open means all the pitches following will be different and the defensive alignment changes. And on and on.

He set up with his legs straddling home plate, from the camera angle that we can see the bat has gone in front of his body so the bat has gone over the plate
But that wrist and bat-over-the-plate stuff isn't in the rule book. One thing I noticed is the ball was right there when he tried to stop his bat. It's basically a swing that he only stops once he realizes he's nowhere near close to touching the ball. So by my own personal uneducated interpretation of the rulebook, he totally offered to hit that ball but then did the whole hold-the-bat-head-just-right thing to pretend he didn't intend to hit that ball. I dunno, I'm probably just warping my own brain in order to be okay with my team winning in this fashion. But damn if the real rule isn't the most weirdly vague thing in all of sports. Like, what's a check swing? Is it really fair to stop a swing that's already basically halfway? Because in my opinion, who cares if the wrists break or whatever... A lot of times a guy's wrists will break early because of bad mechanics, which results in a lame ground ball... So of a guy stops his swing there it'll still be called a strike? Bottom line: the rule as written sucks, fans, broadcasters, and probably players don't really know the rule because it's been talked about for so long in a way that isn't analogous to the actual rule, and the MLB should have had the forethought to make such a play reviewable. Really dumb.
The count was 0-2 and the guy at the plate was 0-20 against Max. Don't act like some kind of miracle was about to happen. If it didn't happen that pitch, it was gonna happen on the next.

One of the many instances where we’ll never know if the outcome would’ve been different had the correct call been made. Even if Wilmer struck out on the next pitch, it wouldn’t have felt as bad as this one. It really sucks that the Giants season had to end on a shitty strike call for the 2nd consecutive year
Tbh it's likely he would've struck. That straight down the middle must ve messed with him. Would've thought that was his chance
For example, in a hypothetical, alternate universe, people like you would have said the same thing to the 2011 Cardinals if a similar call was made in game 6 before David Freese walks it off
Sure Wilmer probably would have got out, but the beauty of baseball is that maybe he finally beats Scherzer and crushes one 450 feet dead center. But we'll never know

I hope for another playoff series against the Giants -Dodger fan
I agree to an extent, problem is the umps were dog shit and our team has been notorious all year of working counts and that’s hard to do when balls clearly off the side plate are getting called all night but the giants were not getting those same calls. I type one or more ">" when that starts. ( > == skip ahead five seconds) Cuteness gets annoying after a few times.
@ Frettin make it your ringtone. Lol
Frettin - You want to have his babies, don't ya?
''i thought he went''... a professional right there... HE THOUGHT''' hahahah!!
As a Giants fan it pains me to watch this but I just have to listen to Jomboy’s analysis 👌🏽 I get the sense it’ll be spot on n will make me feel a bit better haha.
it happening is one thing, but the media-lapdog-to-mlb quickly not talking about it per mlb direction makes it feel much worse, as if you're questioning reality.
THAT is what Jomboy brings - the truth that every fan can see but MLB/ESPN/etc tries to hide. It happened, OK, bad enough. But don't insult my intelligence with some 'maybe it was a check swing' ass-kissing commentary. Call it what it is, all the time, all the teams.
Love how the 1st base ump said in an interview “I thought he went”
probably why he called it a strike
i mean yeah. he called it a strike because he thought it was a strike. so he said he thought it was a strike because he thought it was a strike.
I think he was sending MLB a message. Hopefully they'll get it.
@@nate_storm yeah my problem is even if he did swing (he didn't) an ump in an MLB playoff game should know you don't call that a strike in that situation. ppl give Joe West shit, but he knows that. Manoah talks about it in a Pitching Ninja video.
@@howdareyou41 Umpires blow calls in preseason, regular season and postseason. Even the best of them. There's no such thing as playing it safe in the moment. You have to make the call one way or another in a matter of seconds.
Can we get at least one breakdown of the Brewers vs. Braves series? I mean you got Joc's homer which was just hype as fuck. You got Freddie's solo shot to win the series which had Freddie celebrating like nobody has ever seen him do. You got Urias at 3rd being a straight up vacuum cleaner.
Watching the end of the game on tv I thought for a moment that Scherzy was going to eat or at the very least take a huge bite out of Will Smith when he was walking towards him 😂
Right??? I got so scared for Smith because he’s very calm most of the time. I thought he was gonna take him down lmaoo
@@toritennant 😂
If you have the balls to end a game on a swing check to first, you better be damn well sure he ACTUALLY FUCKING SWUNG AT IT
not to mention in game 5 of the NLDS
@@yoda9256 Everything about this is awful. I don’t root for the Giants, but as a baseball fan this angers me.
This is exactly what I was thinking watching this. I would've erred on this side of caution and not called that, not in game 5, 9th innings of an NLDS match..

Plague on MLB
Flores played for the Mets and had their choke mentality! That first pitch was a perfect home run ball. It’s the type of pitch you like to see in the home run derby. I’m not surprised he laid off it. Giants fans, he wouldn’t have hit anything in that at bat… you and I know it fam.
I understand the ump. My initial reaction was he swung. However, from the side view shot you can see he held up.
4:46 it looks like Max turned into a vampire for a second, biting Will Smith’s neck. 🧛♂️
As a Blue Jays fan watching this, I felt the Giants deserved a better end!
Thank you
Like what? A forsure strike out? Clown

Ump has a point-if you’ve ever umped, it can be a very slippery call. It happens fast and the definition of a swing isn’t exactly a black and white thing. Yes I think he blew it, but I’ve seen worse blown calls
I’ll translate Morales’ statement for you, “It was late and I wanted to go home. So, I called it a swing.”
Disgrace of a northern califronia native he needs to move south of Bakersfield and never come back.
@@SpicyTrifongo cry
I don’t think the ump had any bad intention, and he has the best seat in the house for playoff baseball, i highly doubt he wanted to end the game cause he wanted to go home sooner. His explanation seemed honest, and it’s a hard call to make from the other side of the field when it’s close.
You make a call like that at the Major league level a hundred times and get it right everytime and then you can say that.
It is an absolute insult to Umpires when you diminish their work ethic when you say they make bad calls in a pressure filled situation late in the game just to "go hom early" take a moment to be in their shoes.
i’m not kidding this the hardest i’ve ever laughed at one of ur videos and i’ve watched A LOT of ur videos
Ruf mentioned this as well
Time doesn't work that way. If that check swing was called correctly in the regular season, it becomes a new timeline: in that new world, Dodgers go on to win that game, but then they have an epic collapse and lose their position to the Padres.
@@Pun116 that's true.
This call was just a bit more consequential than the regular season call don't you think?
@@nread8 absolutely!
When the ump starts walking in before even putting his arm up yk he wants it to be over
The fact that Flores failed to swing on the 87 mph slider UP IN THE ZONE . . . total sweet-spot pitch, a legit mistake pitch by Mad Max . . . takes some of the sting out of it.
Jim... you are the absolute best baseball commentator in the world. You should have 12 M subscribers... EVERY real baseball fan would appreciate your level of analysis and humour.
Clearly Scherzer doesn’t watch Jomboy because he hasn’t been getting on that Keeps yet.
Dude. Just a good, funny, comment.
Well done.
@@Ritchie_Ritch haha thanks man.
His wrists never broke and the bat never went over the plate. That should be a reviewable call.
They need an electronic system.
At some point.. reviewing everything ruins the game and the moment..
Bat over plate imo equals a swing, like just because he didn't follow thru makes it not a swing? He wanted to hit it
This is how the MLB wants the first ever dodgers-giants series to end. Sad. This is why betting on professional sports is a fool's game.
@King Kobra yea.. Giants fans.. Read these comments 😂 they ready for a full on orgy with the dodgers
@King Kobra like that ump?
The count was 0-2 and the guy at the plate was 0-20 against Max. Don't act like some kind of miracle was about to happen. If it didn't happen that pitch, it was gonna happen on the next.
Not if you bet on the Dodgers
For $ome rea$on I don't think the MLB i$ lo$ing any $leep over this.
Jomboy needs an Emmy. this is hilarious
but fr, gotta give credit to Morales’ response. he has to make a split second decision and us at home can watch the replay over and over in slow mo and can easily make the call. just was a harsh call during a harsh game.
They could easily look at the play from different angles too but for some reason mlb doesn't allow that for check swings
@@sneersh9107 That is because there is no definition of what a checked swing is. It is purely umpire judgment.
