Hi buddy, I am from India, have lived in multiple countries (including US) and wanted to share my $0.02. I completely agree with your point of supporting innovators and I would happily pay $250 for a Rex ambassador just to respect the innovation, even if there's an affordable knock-off available locally. Having said that, my experience has been that customs+shipping significantly increase the prices of imports. As such, if I buy a Rex, it'll easily cost me upwards of $400. I have bought ton of shaving supplies from US/UK and almost every time I end up paying close to double. Hence, as a consumer based in India, I'm comparing $70 knock-off with a $400 original. Most people will go for a $70 option (including me). Moreover, as an India, it also gives me an opportunity to support local manufacturers and give them an incentive to innovate and not just be copy cats. Either way, I love the amazing work you do and regularly follow your channel. Do keep making more amazing products!
The Flexi is not a "copy" of the Res Ambassador. Both razors are homages to the vintage Gibbs Adjustable razor. I have never heard anyone other than Matt indicate that the blade feel and range of aggression are similar between these two razors. Gibbs was the innovator here, not Pearl or Razor Emporium, or any of the other makers of Gibbs Adjustable homage razors. They are Entrepreneurs who by necessity engage in some serious Engineering, but the original design is uniquely French in origin, and pre-war. I have read many comments on forums by owners of the Rex Ambassador who claim that it is overly efficient, even at the lower levels, and that it has a high blade feel across the entire range of adjustment. I have not read a single comment in a forum to this effect in regard to the Flexi, once the cap alignment flaw was corrected. Pearl chose to make the top cap on the Flexi ambidextrous, rather than keying it to one side, as the vintage Gibbs Adjustable did, as the Rex Ambassador is, as the Parker Variant and Merkur Progress are. This decision by Pearl presented tolerance challenges that were not reliably overcome until the third variant of the Flexi came to market. The top cap alignment (canting) issue has been resolved. The closest homage to the vintage Gibbs Adjustable in terms of it's smoothness and it's broad range of adjustable efficiency is probably the replica made by Heritage Razor; but I have heard some user's state that the Pearl Flexi comes close to these qualities of the vintage Gibbs Adjustable, once you adjust to the fact that it weighs nearly twice what the vintage Gibbs Adjustable does.

Today I received the Rex Ambassador for my birthday. I own many razors, including the R41, Tatara Muramasa, AsD2 and others. But I must confess that none so far had impressed me as much as Rex. I tried it at every setting and got incredible results. I came to the conclusion that it is a simply perfect machine and certainly represents the result of a timeless passion.
I have Version 5 of the Flexi. The problems have all been resolved. The blade alignment is perfect at every setting and the top piece fits flush to the bottom piece. There is no play between the two. Awesome razor for the price. I also own the Rex and it is superb.
Firstly I love my Rex Ambassador, and my Envoy, and my Sovereign. I love my Razor Emporium revamped razors too. So I’m a big supporter of yours. But you keep saying how they took your design, and they clearly did, but you took the Gibbs adjustable design, it wasn’t a revolutionary design you created. I think it’s incredibly hypocritical to take these shots at their copying while you don’t credit the Gibbs.
Did you watch last week's video? Yes I acknowledged where the inspiration for the ambassador came from and also talked about all the things we improved on.
@@RazorEmporium no I haven’t seen that yet, I must watch it. Good that you acknowledge them then but still. To me, if you only watch this video, the impression is the Rex was a brand new revolutionary design innovated by you and they’ve stolen it.
The Ambassador is just outstanding across the board, it is without a doubt my favorite razor. I'm glad it's being made in the USA, the quality is just incredible and worth every penny. If I had to keep just one razor, it's this one. Cheers!
Congratulations, I think it is very brave that you compared a copy of your own product in a very professional and polite manner. As a German I really appreciate overengineerd things and the Ambassador is one of them. I think there is little room for improvement except one thing: Is there any chance to get a surface hardened / kolsterized version of the ambassador so the razor will stay free of scratches?
I definitely supported your company, I purchased the real thing, the Rex Ambassador!! Couldn't be happier! Lifetime warranty, stainless marine grade steel, USA made, how could you go wrong! Thanks for being the innovator!!
I appreciate the honesty in your review. I wouldn’t fault you for blasting this razor, but you didn’t and that speaks volumes. That being said, I thoroughly enjoy my Rex Ambassador. I’ve said it in comments on several other channels, the Ambassador checks all the boxes I wanted and I am a very happy customer. And I agree with you, the Ambassador has the best knurling around. Period. And I also respect your commitment to putting out a quality product. I’m the kind of guy who complains at the hardware store because tools aren’t made here anymore. I’m willing to pay more for the old Craftsman (Sears) tools or a Rex Ambassador razor because I know what I am getting.
I tend to not jump into a purchase (I do my research). There are a lot of people that use the Ambassador as their measuring stick. The more I researched, the more I realized I should try it out (and did). I also purchased a T2 and since returned it after comparing the two. Matt also nailed it on a great point; considering the fact that you will be able to use the razor for a lifetime, it really doesn't cost that much. It could be the last razor you ever have to buy.
I also think that there's a possibility that people will talk about the wrecks ambassador in 40 to 60 years as people talk today about the Gillette fat boy. I don't say that to take anything away from Gillette. I just think it's a quality built razor that people will talk about for generations
I'm a proud owner of an Ambassador that I just bought this summer. I had the opportunity to try one in a passaround. While it's not my absolute best razor, there was just something about it that I did really enjoy. I saved up for 6 or 8 months to be able to buy one. There was a time when I would have gladly bought the less expensive copy, but over the past few years I've gained a new respect and appreciation for artists, entrepreneurs, and small business owners. I also respect your very Seth Godin-like decision on the razor. You could have made it cheaper by going outside the U.S. or using a different material, or skipping the warranty. I like that you sell it for what you believe is a reasonable cost, and didn't try to sacrifice what you wanted to make just to try and pull in a few more customers. If it's too expensive, that's unfortunate for you, but it just means this isn't the razor for you, and that's ok. It's people like us that buy razors like this. Way to be the bigger man and give an honest review.
I feel you, and you are right! The engineering, the precission, quality, and lifetime wareanty really wort it. Also the look, the design and the stand of the Ambassador, they are way more beautiful 😍
Mr Matt, Hi, brass makes it expensive even though Rex is not brass make. Secondly found you didn’t check warranty card which is provided alongwith cleaning cloth by Pearl. Please do check proper. There is a warranty on Pearl Flexi. Please check n update. Gives bad impression on “Innovators” the Pearl being you didn’t mention proper. Apart “support Innovators” was good mention.
He did mention the warranty. He said there was a warranty, but he wasn't sure how long it lasted. The Rex is the better razor, period. It was designed from scratch, with higher quality materials, brass is not a superior material compared to stainless steel, both are good but stainless steel is more premium. That being said, the pearl is a great value for money razor, but saying its superior is quite laughable.
@@matthewolivier2883 Rex wasn't designed from the scratch! Period. Check out Gibbs adjustable safety razor or Personna Micrometric adjustable razor. Rex is a very close copy of Personna Micrometric(or Gibbs) with several small adjustments.
Hi Matt! After many years of being a face and head shaver, I decided to graduate from the training wheels of multi-blade shaving and move to DE razors. After reading several reviews and forums, the choice was clear, and I purchased the Rex Ambassador, SS stand, and travel case. I love how the entire Rex product line radiates mid-century luxury and style! Regarding your question about the beryllium copper that is used by Pearl corroding, it should develop an oxide tarnish that will passivate the surface. Regardless, I prefer to spend the extra money on the innovator, their vision, and charter.
I really want to get the Ambassador but the constant drag issue with my Envoy stops me. Even with the replacement cap that is the "newest" version, there seems to be something else going on that causes the drag and The Rex line (I've tried an ambassador a year ago) is the only razors I've experienced this with.
My grandfather has always said. "You get what you pay for".. im saving my pennies to get a high quality razor or maybe Santa will bring me one down the chimney.. if I have been good enough!
I think your philosophy and acumen are to be noted and I am so happy to see that from an American business. I went with the Pearl Flexi Black for the exact reason you mentioned, I didn't have the money to get what I really wanted. I am saving for what I want and it is not the Ambassador. The one I want to get is the Konsul XL. I think that for me, that will be the best razor ever made. Until then, I will be shaving with the Pearl Flexi Black Edition.
I agree with you 100%. That being said I can't justify $250 on a razor. I could easily afford $250 for a Razor just as I could afford $250,000 on a sports car. However I'm not going to do either one. My 10 year old pickup truck and Gillette Fatboy is the route I'm gone. Plus I love the twist to open feature. I don't like two or three part razors.
Completely agree with Matt. Support the innovator and ethical practices not the imitator. By buying the Rex Ambassador, you get the top quality luxury razor (best in class design, engineering, materials, manufacturing and customer support) but you also support innovation, and ethical manufacturing practices and labor practices as the razor is manufactured in US by people treated fairly and paid fair wages. As Matt stated, the first adjustable razor manufactured in the US since Gillette stopped, let that sink in for a second. By buying the Rex you are helping bring manufacturing back to the US and supporting US workers. PS: It's kind of a shame that Pearl shaving was not even capable of copying a design with proper tolerances. For those wondering, here we are 2 years later and @Heiko Shaves just purchased a Pearl Flexi and it has a faulty uneven blade gap, so 2 years later the issues are not fully fixed despite what Pearl Shaving communicates.
I love that you have a business philosophy and stick to it. I have worked for many companies that say one thing in their mission statement and then do something completely different. No wonder people are cynical about corporations. The nice thing about your business is that the buck starts and stops with you. And knowing you Matt, you will always do the right thing for your customers. Being the low-cost leader is a losing proposition.
Matt, everything you say and think is very valuable. Please be yourself. Be persistent. Stay strong. Don't let anyone or anything spoil your thoughts and plans. The 21st century is a time of low-quality, disposable things, because people have lost all taste and have ceased to be grateful. It is easier for them to buy again than to save what they have. A few weeks ago, I bought a messenger with a stand and whatnot as a nice touch. And this is only because you really love what you do and believe that it is good. It came out really, beyond all praise. But do not stop, You will go down in history, I promise))) My strong, friendly handshakes. Cheers, Matt.
I purchased a Rex Ambassador a few weeks ago and I love it. Before the purchase, I took a peek at the Flexi and the materials used in the manufacturing of this product, let alone the unevenness of the blade once the adjustment is turned up. Well, I decided to pass and decided to purchase the Rex. I can foresee the razor getting passed down to my son and remaining in the family for years to come.
I totally agree on the price of the stand. 75 euro is a lot of money for just the stand. So I ordered the Rex Ambassador (should arrive today) but not the stand.
Hi Matt. Great comparison. Can you specify the Blade Gap and blade exposure (negative, zero or positive in millimeters) for each setting of The Ambassador? (maybe this information is somewhere, but I can't find it).
@@SHMOKE57 I know this information. I meant something else - 0.012 "is position number (1), 0.051" is the last position. And position (2), (3), (4) and to the last one? And what is blade exposure (negative, zero or positive in millimeters) for each setting of The Ambassador?
Setting 3 is 0.25", same as the rex envoy. I believe each setting is equally different. There are 0.5 settings and infinite adjustability as it doesn't click into each level. 0.12 starts at 0.5 and 0.51 is at 6.5 setting
I stand with you Matt!! you did all the hard work developing a beautiful razor and then someone else comes along and tries to copy what you did. I will definitely be buying one in the future to show my support for you!
The Rex Ambassador is simply a fabulous razor and I wouldn't recommend anyone buying a lower quality imitation even if you pay less. Better wait and save your money for the Rex Ambassador. You won't regret it.
I wish I could justify paying that much for a razor, but I'm not there. Well, that has something to do with that I just purchased a 1973 Super Adjustable and had you revamp it. :-) I appreciate that yours is made in America and your sincerity. Thanks for doing what you do.
My Rex Ambassador should arrive today. I'm very much looking forward to try it out. I did not bought the stand though. I think 75 euro for just the stand is a bit much.
I bought the stand and was easily able to justify the price. It's a nice stand and can double as home self defense. Any intruder is going to run into a problem if I throw that stand at them, lethal.
I could have imported the Russian razor as well as the Flexi. I love my Rex and wasn't interested in importing a copy of something that was still being manufactured.
@@sbcwinn It's getting annoying. The Russian razor is not a copy of Rex. Actually they are completely different razors that just have the same design ancestor - Gibbs adjustable razor. And I find it disreputable that Matt deliberately pretends that Rex is his original design that is made from the scratch. In reality, Rex is an almost complete copy of Gibbs or Persona Micrometric.
an honest and respectful review, I have been having the Rex for some time but I also have the Flexi V3 coming in from Israel. It will be nice to compare them both, although no doubt the Rex is of much better quality just by looking at both razors in the video
I just started getting into shaving with a safety razor. I got the Henson (a great razor) with a milder blade format. Rather than start with the more expensive Ambassador, I went with the Pearl Flexi. While the Flexi gave a good shave, I notice the the milder Henson gave as close a shave as the Flexi on 3. That was a bit surprising. Also I don't think shaving side by side is the way to test the Flexi vs. the Ambassador. There is going to be a bias against the Ambassador because it's the more expensive product. The shave should be given by a barber with the person getting the shave blindfolded. They should then be questioned on how the felt being shave, which had the smoother shave both at the time of the shave and 8 hours later. I wonder how long the Flexi will last vs the Ambassador. Is there a way to do a torture test? Finally I'd do the same test vs. a non adjustable razor. I felt that the Henson gave me a much better shave than the Flexi. I'm not sorry I got the Flexi but wonder if I should have waited to buy the Ambassador.
Hi Matt- Great comparison video; thank you! Respect the innovators! Take good care and be safe and be well. Have a great weekend. Best regards, as always.
Matt, love the Ambassador (bought from your NZ distributor), and have just bought an Envoy directly from you. Love the quality. Exceptional in every respect. Agree with you it is good there’s a cheap entry-level knock off. People will move onto Rex if/when they can afford it. Rex is is best-of-class.
If we compare Rex with Gibbs or Personna, we can also say that Rex is a modern replica. Flexi - replica to replica ... All manufacturers spy on engineering solutions from others. It is pointless to be offended, you need to produce the best product, and the buyer himself decides what to buy ...
I can't say enough good things about my rex. It works great for my head and face shaves. If you're considering one of these two, and can afford/save up to get the Ambassador from Rex, then I'd recommend the Rex ambassador.
Not to be critical, but if getting copied more cheaply was undesirable, why isn't the Rex patented? That's what the Patent system's for. (By way of comparison, consider Gaisman v. Gillette back in the day. Gaisman's patents brought down the Gillette marketing monster in the end.)
You can't patent an old design (adjustment mechanism) unless you improve upon it significantly. And even if you do get awarded a patent In usa, trying to enforce it may cost more than the matter is worth. Hard to enforce too with international companies.
@RazorEmporium I am a Patent Attorney, and enjoyed your discussions about Valet Autostrop v. the Gillette New. I cannot give you legal advice, and this most certainly is not legal advice, but I can make broad brush observations about the patent system, and the two points you make, about obviousness and litigation costs, I've heard these two points many, many, times, and it's not that simple AT ALL. The best overarching guide is, whenever one comes up with something that seems really cool and that people will like, immediately talk to a capable patent attorney, and reliably explore the limits of the possible and advantageous, otherwise one might be generating self-inflicted harm. Btw, I notice on your webpage, that its logo has no copyright notice. (Woah!)
@@RazorEmporium I agree with your assessment about international enforcement. That would be a nightmare that would never end. You'd be better off using the lawyer expenses to lower the price of the Ambassador.
@@BartBuzz International enforcement is a whole additional level of complexity, and, of course relevant. But as a first cut, one can think about enforcing in the U.S. market against knock offs, imported or domestic. Again, consult your friendly local patent attorney right out of the box.
@@edwardmiles6513 The point here is that the Rex design is not original enough to be patented because it is mostly a copy of Gibbs or Personna adjustable razors.(original Gibbs patent expired many many years ago). And that's the reason why it is impossible for Matt to protect and enforce design rights in the US or in other parts of the world because he doesn't own this razor design. On the other hand if they would've tried to copy his logo or would've called their product Rex Ambassador that would've been another story.
The unfortunate part is that international patent protection isn’t set up for the small guy. It’s far too expensive and lends itself to legitimizing copycats.
I’m looking forward to getting the new Pearl flexi. I talk to one of the representatives and they said they fixed the blade balance issue completely. Third times a charm
This Christmas I shopped around for a adjustable razor for my dad, I really wanted to get him the rex but it is pricey, eventually I may get one for myself. My second option was going to be the Model T. But the mix of metals was a turn off. I went with a fatboy, with original case for $80. The razor is basically brand new and with a little bit of polishing and cleaning it looks great. If I wanted a cheaper razor i will always look for vintage
@@RazorEmporium thanks, I would love to see Rex try to make a modern vibrating razor next, something with a triple A battery also I’m not sure if that’s gimmicky
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! With that being said I won’t spend $70 for a “budget” razor. Materials matter to me and how it’s put together. My first DE razor was the Feather AS-D2 for $185 shipped. That was about 6 or 7 years ago and the finish is still pristine. I just bought the Karve stainless 3” with solid bar C plate. I haven’t shaved with it but the finish looks great. However, I didn’t get the plastic washer from WCS…
New owner of an Ambassador XL and it's worth the money to have something with a lifetime warranty that last for multiple generations. However, I can see the value in a clone like the Pearl. It's the "poor mans" version not everybody has the means to have a 500 dollar razor but still want the experience so kudos to both companies. The innovator is the trail blazer making that paves the way for many others the stand on the shoulders of greatness at a discount.
The problem with your analogy of the shave soaps is those are generally bought one at a time over a period of time not all at once. I have never bought $350 for the shaving soap at once. 20 bucks here 15 bucks here 25 bucks there.
@@RazorEmporium I think I will be picking up an envoy soon though. Never been a huge fan of adjustable razors cuz I pick a setting and leave it there so lol thanks for responding by the way
13:30 not what I need to be hearing right now... I just purchased an ambassador and am in awe of the quality of everything down to the finish on the boxes to the foam which holds the products to the inspectors ticket being just perfectly the right size to fit in from the edge of the box to the baseplate of the razor. Any insight on the the other razor products or somewhere i could find updates and announcements? And are they anything to rival/replace the ambassador?
Sorry, love my ambassador, I own , Merkur, Feather, and my Rex is by far the best....I love it...I just want one that is a tiny bit longer......adjustable also......and Made in the USA is a plus for me....I paid 249. Most expensive DE razor that I own, and worth every penny...
Kudos for being as even-handed as possible given the situation, Matt! I’m a proud owner of the Ambassador (0931N2), so I don’t envision myself trying the imitation by Pearl.
@@magnoliamike Of course. I’ve had one of those since before I got an Ambassador. Both give great shaves, but I prefer the Ambassador because I don’t like modifying DE blades to fit the old Gibbs.
Superb review Matt. I thought the conclusion was best summed up when you did the 'tip over' test😂 I absolutely get the fact not everyone can afford to spend $200+ and it is nice to have a cheaper alternative... This review would convince me to save up. Other than the unintentional slant issue, I thought what was quite telling was there being no natural drying option if the Pearl is upright and/or in the stand, so corrosion is inevitable. Nice job Matt. 👍
Matt, I like you and I love your videos. However, all this talk of innovation and being a “trailblazer” doesn’t add up when the Gibbs razor has existed for over 60+ years lol. They’re exactly the same when broken down. It’s cool to be proud of something you created but it’s another thing to throw dirt on someone else based on how you feel about their resemblance to your product. I believe the current version of the Flexi has solved all these issues too. Anyhow, cheers to you and keep the vids coming!
That's like saying that no new car company has developed anything after Karl Benz created the internal combusion engine in the 1890's. When you take something and improve it, change the way its' made, the materials it's made of, the way it performs or assembles, you have innovated an old idea. That's what we did. Pearl did none of that and instead copied our improvements. Big difference.
@@RazorEmporium I wouldn’t say they outright copied your razor completely. What they accomplish is making a brass razor that is affordable for people who can’t afford a made in USA all stainless adjustable razor. As for the HS Taiga, having the ability to change the base plate from a closed to an open comb can also be considered innovative given what you said about the combustion engine. Not tryna sound like a hater cause that’s not what this is, but I think competition is good and in the end we, the consumers, win from y’all shooting it out and trying to make a better product. Props given for making an adjustable slant, as I’m really looking forward to trying that out in the future. All the best!
Gibbs parts won't fit on Ambassador. But Pearl parts will. That's because they copied. No innovation. I applaud homelike shaving as they did a novel thing. Ambassador would also be $75 if it was made in India. But then it wouldn't be REX.
What I’ve seen the Rex looks a excellent razor, but may be above most people’s budget, well especially my own, but still a great looking and working razor. Take care. Cheers🥃😷
I’m buying a Rex not only because of the design and function not to mention the premium materials but because I support the company and like to keep the money in the US. Yes, the clone is decent and I’m sure it would still be half the price if they did use the same materials. I have nothing against making purchases that are sourced elsewhere but on such items like this I love that it’s designed and made here in the USA.
Great video Matt, you were very fair with your review of the Flexi. If I was in your position, I don’t think I could have been as non-biased. While I have been using single edges almost exclusively, I’ll definitely be saving my pennies to purchase the Ambassador. Keep up the innovation and great work brother!
What a gentleman, his razor design is ripped off by an imitator whose labour costs are peanuts and he manages to give an unbiased review. Here in the UK, the Ambassador sells for about £239 which is expensive, but once purchased it will outlive the original purchaser and is, therefore, a functioning heirloom that can be passed onto future generations, such is the quality of the Ambassador. At the minute I have the Envoy and I am that impressed I now intend to purchase the adjustable version, ie the ambassador. Great review and a superb product, quality are always worth a premium.
I want an adjustable razor. I'm battling between the Rex and the fat boy, black beauty and those old Gillettes. In your opinion, which one is worth the money?
I agree with all you said Matt. My first razer was the Rex Ambassador. Still love it. I love quality. However, I also have other quality pieces. One is the Timeless Titanium Polished 0.95 with scalloped head, the Blackland Blackbird in Polished Brass, and the limited edition Stainless Polished Karve. I would only need one but it’s nice to have variety. And I only have like 10 soaps 😂
Can’t wait too receive my Rex ambassador. Ordered one and got the Black Friday discount. Razor emporium mailed it out December 7. Evidently the U.S. mail still uses the pony express. Hopefully will get it before Christmas and not the middle of next year!!!! Major reason for me buying one Matt elaborates in this and his last video regarding the ambassador. We need more entrepreneurs like this!!!
I just bought a Flexi and the only reason I did so is because the Ambassador is simply too expensive in South Africa. Nearly 5 times more expensive. But maybe one day I will be the proud owner of a Rex product. Liked the vid.
@@MayankPathak22 My first DE razor was a very cheap no name brand 3 piece when I started wet shaving but it served its purpose and then I upgraded to a Parker 61R. Very nice razor and well priced. The Pearl is my first adjustable and by far superior to the other two. The quality is top notch. The weight took some getting use to as its very heavy compared to the 61R. Had to adjust my technique slightly but now I am only using the Pearl. So to answer your question its the best I have used so far and I doubt I will be changing anytime soon
I'm glad I came across your channel to learn everything and anything about DE shaving.Your videos have help me out a lot! When I'm able to, I hope to get this razor one day and then pass it down until the end of time :)
Did you listen to my commentary? We never denied we took the Gibbs as major construction design. But every single component had been altered from the original Gibbs. No rex part is interchangeable with Gibbs. The entire head geometry and shave performance is different than gibbs. Yet pearl parts work with Rex. So pearl copied our parts.
Nice comparison Matt. I had no idea Pearl was linked with Parker. I wondered why India was stamped on my variant in my last video. Also I LOVE that I’ve found someone that shaves in the same direction as me on their lower neck. We’re brothers from another mother! Happy Christmas to you and yours.
One lesson: quality control means testing out the prototype BEFORE any release on market. I did purchase my Rex second-hand mint condition for $170, and am very happy with it, and that is because its craftsmanship and care in QC is evident. Much thought and effort obviously went into its development to the final product. As an aside, one company (Heritage Collection Shaving) was supposedly sometime in the future offering a Gibbs adjustable replica, but this appears to have fallen through. As the Rex has been inspired by it, I would indeed love to see an actual stainless steel version tribute properly done if you will, created by Razor Emporium, which I see as up for achieving better than any other razor company. What are your thoughts on such an undertaking and possibility Matt?
Wasn't the ambassador an "homage" to another razor (the gibbs adjustable)? So, while they (Pearl) did copy the head of the Rex it's not trying to be a "clone" like a fake rolex, it's also a homage. It's a little disingenous people complaining about Pearl when Rex did something similar from the Gibbs. That said, I would much rather have the Rex but just wanted to point that out.
Please watch last week's video. We discussed this exact topic at length. there is so much we changed about our razor compared to the gibbs. every single measurement, dimension, material, construction technique, and many other things were changed. Pearl changed nearly nothing.
@@RazorEmporium Got it. I wasn't trying to be negative, I was just pointing out a few other things. Namely, it's not an exact clone of the ambassador. I hope santa brings me some money for xmas so I can purchase an ambassador for myself.
@@RazorEmporium The fact that you changed some measurements and dimensions doesn't mean that this your design. Hence why you can't patent it. Don't get me wrong I like my Rex. And even if Pearl was available at the time I would have still bought Rex. But I don't like the fact that you portray other Gibbs-like products like a copycats of your own design. Especially the Russian razor which is clearly different in design from Rex.
Matt I don't think Pearl or any imitators make you look bad. It's all about buying power. Everybody is aware of material, tolerances or workmanship differences, but there is no solution to it. US is a well developed country with its money is highly valued, and its citizens' prosperiy is exceptionally well whereas there are a lot of underdeveloped countries with poor welfare. For example in my country monthly minimal wage is 216 dollars right now. Hard to believe I know, someone with 2k salary of course would happily pay for Ambassador. But would you able pay more than a month of you income for a razor? No, I guess. Not even for an iphone right? So thats the situation for most of well developed countries right now. Their money is so valued they will have a lot of problems exporting their products. No matter how good or better made they are. It is an Era to make affordable products that will sell a lot to be able to stand on your feet. Because a handful well developed countries makes the remaining world countries poorer day by day either by some apparent or devious ways. Ok, done with my political ranting, I think Ambassador is a great product but also kudos to Indians to imitate such a complex product that well. I wish they had been more innovative and authentic with their designs.
Hmm this is a tough one Rex I don’t own yet due to the fact I wish that head is little slimmer and need little detail TLC.. I like idea of serial number on Rex and registration, maybe boxing need to be redone provide polishing Rex cloth little presentation among with it. Would Rex work on me ohh I don’t know I have sensitive skin and I use Karve Plate C which works amazing. Matt seems like a decent fella and I like his reviews and opinions 🙏🏻💈👍🏼 Alan H
I mean the Ambassador also looks very much like a Gillette Slim without the Spider mechanism however I would still buy the Ambassador and not the cheap one
I would love to have a Rex Ambassador, however the price point just won’t allow me. I wish you would consider making a safety razor that would be more affordable for folks who won’t or can’t afford high end razors. I believe you can make an even bigger imprint on wet shaving if you do this. Thanks
Honestly your answer sounds kind of sarcastic. I do not make razors so I don’t know what materials to use. A price point maybe around $50.00 seems reasonable and doable. I’m really disappointed in your answer, seems to me you have an unwillingness to listen. I definitely will not be doing business with you.
I respect your philosophy, and an not trying to argue the point, but I could see where people (like me) who have limited funds but want to support USA manufacturers would be drawn to a scaled down version. Maybe a brass version (not as nice, but as you said, Gillette has already done this) would be a good way for people to support the innovators, buy American, and still have a lower price point. I mean, no one says Ralf Aust razors are bad because they aren't Max Sprecher prices. I guess what I'm saying is that I don't mind paying for quality, but some of us are happy to get a nice product (with fewer bells and whistles), but honestly feel a price pinch at the over $200 mark. If you could offer quality, but maybe something with a limited warranty (maybe reduced but not free repair costs or something?), there may be a market that you could reach without compromising your philosophy.
They had a black Friday sale where I bought the rex ambassador for under $200. It ended up costing $174 total. Thats a great deal. Sometimes you can find them on eBay or B/S/T pages as well :)
Hi buddy,
I am from India, have lived in multiple countries (including US) and wanted to share my $0.02.
The Rex Razor has by far the best knurling ever put on a razor. It's amazingly grippy without feeling uncomfortable. Great points on both razors.

«Buy once, cry once» - love my Ambassador!
Thanks for sharing!
I have Version 5 of the Flexi. The problems have all been resolved. The blade alignment is perfect at every setting and the top piece fits flush to the bottom piece. There is no play between the two. Awesome razor for the price. I also own the Rex and it is superb.
Often duplicated, never replicated.
Just wanted to reach out and let you know the Pearl flexi failed a unboxing review. I did tag this video.
Cheers!
Classy Review! You didn't sound bitter or disrespectful, just laying out the facts in as respectful way as possible.
Everyday that I shave with the Ambassador I'm impressed with the machine work and design used. Love the Ambassador.
I agree with that statement - untill Matt released the Konsul! Douh
@@matthewolivier2883
Rex wasn't designed from the scratch! Period. Check out Gibbs adjustable safety razor or Personna Micrometric adjustable razor. Rex is a very close copy of Personna Micrometric(or Gibbs) with several small adjustments.
I prefer quality and that’s why I have both the Ambassador and Envoy!
I love my rex Konsul! But I had the problem with the Pearl Flexi v12 not being level too!
Both Razors are very similar to the old Gibbs adjustable.
I had the Gibbs and also the ambassador and the latter seems a copy of the former
Does the Rex Ambassador warranty transfer to the next buyer or does it apply to original purchaser only?
Let's just say that if it has our name on it we will take care of it.
@@RazorEmporium thanks does your scratch and dent collection come with a warranty too? For mechanical items
My grandfather has always said. "You get what you pay for".. im saving my pennies to get a high quality razor or maybe Santa will bring me one down the chimney.. if I have been good enough!
I hope santa is good to you
Except for the Gamechangers and Lupos. You pay next to nothing and get razors as good as any brother so there always exceptions for every rule! 🍻

Often imitated... never duplicated... The Rex!
Often imitated never duplicated the Gibbs #17!
@@caramelypoops The Rex has far most positive blade exposure and the head and baseplate is different however
“Support the innovators...” I love that statement.
Says it with a straight face knowing he copied the Gibbs
Measure the Gibbs. Not the same. And Matt didn’t protest the plagiarism. He notes the knock-off is probably good for Rex.
Thank you 😊
I love that you have a business philosophy and stick to it.
Is there a Shop in Germany to buy the Rex Ambassador?
Can you demonstrate or describe how to disassemble -Pearl Flexi V6 Adjustable Safety Razor?
Don't have one anymore to demonstrate on.
I’ve got the Rex Ambassador, (bought from EBay used - sorry) and it is simply the most awesome piece of kit and probably worth every penny.
Great video. I own an Ambassador and I think it is a great razor that is worth the price. What I do think is overpriced is the stand.
I totally agree on the price of the stand. 75 euro is a lot of money for just the stand. So I ordered the Rex Ambassador (should arrive today) but not the stand.
Both are... Gibbs copies.
Hi Matt. Great comparison. Can you specify the Blade Gap and blade exposure (negative, zero or positive in millimeters) for each setting of The Ambassador? (maybe this information is somewhere, but I can't find it).
The blade gap for the ambassador is 0.12-0.51" i believe. It's on the website
I'm not sure about blade exposure (positive vs negative)
really appreciate the honesty, he is a true gentleman
I stand with you Matt!! you did all the hard work developing a beautiful razor and then someone else comes along and tries to copy what you did. I will definitely be buying one in the future to show my support for you!
I'm really happy that people like you exists, copying is easy, inventing is hard. Props to you and hope your shaving business lasts forever.
The Rex Ambassador is simply a fabulous razor and I wouldn't recommend anyone buying a lower quality imitation even if you pay less. Better wait and save your money for the Rex Ambassador. You won't regret it.
Excellent vid and good job on being fair and transparent.
I wish I could justify paying that much for a razor, but I'm not there. Well, that has something to do with that I just purchased a 1973 Super Adjustable and had you revamp it. :-) I appreciate that yours is made in America and your sincerity. Thanks for doing what you do.
Thank you for the honest review. Have a great day.
Will you do a comparison from the ambassador to the homelike shaving taiga? Maybe a review shave with the taiga?
Possibly so
My Rex Ambassador should arrive today.
I have a Rex Ambassador and love it. Do you plan an open comb Ambassador or can you refer me to the Russian adjustable open comb Thanks
homelikeshaving.ru/reguliruemaya-britva-tajga.html
I could have imported the Russian razor as well as the Flexi. I love my Rex and wasn't interested in importing a copy of something that was still being manufactured.
@@sbcwinn
It's getting annoying.
@@xerxis301 You may be right, but it is a good razor at a fair price. I enjoy using it. That is what it's all about, at least for me.
an honest and respectful review, I have been having the Rex for some time but I also have the Flexi V3 coming in from Israel.
In other words, it should at least be a blind study. Circumstances prevent it from being a double-blinded study.
Hi Matt- Great comparison video; thank you! Respect the innovators! Take good care and be safe and be well. Have a great weekend. Best regards, as always.
You do get what you pay for.
The craftsmanship of the Rex and the customer service at Razor Emporium cannot be matched. Great video Matt!
@@edwardmiles6513
The point here is that the Rex design is not original enough to be patented because it is mostly a copy of Gibbs or Personna adjustable razors.(original Gibbs patent expired many many years ago). And that's the reason why it is impossible for Matt to protect and enforce design rights in the US or in other parts of the world because he doesn't own this razor design. On the other hand if they would've tried to copy his logo or would've called their product Rex Ambassador that would've been another story.
Fair comparison and I agree go with the original for many reasons.
Thanks for the comparison Matt. Not a fan of copycat cheaper products. Keep up the good work!
I believe Mark If you pay shipping you can sale more stuff I’m fed up ordered some stuff from USA sometimes shipping cost more than stuff in basket
Great choice
@@RazorEmporium thanks, I would love to see Rex try to make a modern vibrating razor next, something with a triple A battery also I’m not sure if that’s gimmicky
That would be a nice piece in a museum of immitators.
The price is pretty hard to wrap my head around... But I understand quality is king and USA made is a huge huge selling point personally.
And what happens when innovators stop wanting to make new things? The Gibbs had been out for 80+ years....why did no one else think of rebooting it?
The problem with your analogy of the shave soaps is those are generally bought one at a time over a period of time not all at once. I have never bought $350 for the shaving soap at once. 20 bucks here 15 bucks here 25 bucks there.
True. But most sites like ours offers after pay or PayPal pay later that breaks up large purchases into payments.

I guess you never heard of the Gibbs razor
I love watching the water run through the handle on my rex ambassador when I rinse it 😂
Matt, I like you and I love your videos.
Take care.

Thank you for your support 🙏
Great video Matt, you were very fair with your review of the Flexi. If I was in your position, I don’t think I could have been as non-biased.
While I have been using single edges almost exclusively, I’ll definitely be saving my pennies to purchase the Ambassador.
Keep up the innovation and great work brother!
LMAO that shave soap call out too true 🤣
What a gentleman, his razor design is ripped off by an imitator whose labour costs are peanuts and he manages to give an unbiased review. Here in the UK, the Ambassador sells for about £239 which is expensive, but once purchased it will outlive the original purchaser and is, therefore, a functioning heirloom that can be passed onto future generations, such is the quality of the Ambassador. At the minute I have the Envoy and I am that impressed I now intend to purchase the adjustable version, ie the ambassador. Great review and a superb product, quality are always worth a premium.

How's it compared to other razors that you have used?
@@MayankPathak22 My first DE razor was a very cheap no name brand 3 piece when I started wet shaving but it served its purpose and then I upgraded to a Parker 61R. Very nice razor and well priced. The Pearl is my first adjustable and by far superior to the other two. The quality is top notch. The weight took some getting use to as its very heavy compared to the 61R. Had to adjust my technique slightly but now I am only using the Pearl. So to answer your question its the best I have used so far and I doubt I will be changing anytime soon
I will be saving until I can support the innovator for sure! Great video sir
I hope to own a Rex Ambassador someday
Great razor, keep up the good work.
An honest and informative review. Well done Matt & team!
I’d love to see you guys do a cheaper ambassador made out of a cheaper material. I’d love to own one. Hopefully one day.
The Rex Ambassador: Often Imitated, Never Replicated
I'm glad I came across your channel to learn everything and anything about DE shaving.Your videos have help me out a lot! When I'm able to, I hope to get this razor one day and then pass it down until the end of time :)
Your razor looks pretty much like the Gibbs adjustable vintage razor so I am not sure if you are innovators either.
That was about as fair as possible, good job. I bought a Rex Ambassador because I wanted something I could pass down to my son.
I could not agree more with everything you said, you have me sold. This is something I look forward to passing on one day!

The fact that you changed some measurements and dimensions doesn't mean that this your design.
Matt seems like a decent fella and I like his reviews and opinions 🙏🏻💈👍🏼

I mean the Ambassador also looks very much like a Gillette Slim without the Spider mechanism however I would still buy the Ambassador and not the cheap one
Great video Matt, I think you were fairly objective and honest. Just FYI, I will never support such copycat companies. I'll always buy the OG
I would love to have a Rex Ambassador, however the price point just won’t allow me. I wish you would consider making a safety razor that would be more affordable for folks who won’t or can’t afford high end razors. I believe you can make an even bigger imprint on wet shaving if you do this. Thanks
What price point should we aim for? What material would it be made of? Thx for your feedback.
