The Rex is a masterpiece, most wet shavers go down the rabbit hole of buying cheap razors, including myself, save up and buy the Rex that will last a lifetime. Great video as always Matt.

Been there. Done that. I already had 14 razors. (Vintage and new ones). The Rex Ambassador still impressed me.

I was interested in this, too, but at EUR 295 (>300 USD) it was three times the price of Rockwell 6S, which I ended up getting instead. This is probably as well made as the Rockwell, but there is a limit how much a simple piece of hardware should cost.
This is not rocket science. A vintage Gillette lasts a life time, too, and cost a fraction of this price when new. It seems that prices of everything that has to do with wet shaving have gone the last few years with no limit in sight, as people are willing to pay more and more for everything, including soaps and accessories, even though the quality has not improved, only the branding, which is now fancier and fancier for every boutique manufacturer.
I think Rex rides that same wave - as does Rockwell, of course, having also increased their prices substantially with their growing demand and prestige. And just look at what vintage razors now cost…

    • @Shaverboy516
      @Shaverboy516 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@mechantl0up I agree 100 percent, All vintage Gillettes are crazy expensive, I think the Fatboy is sought after the most so it’s in crazy demand, the Slim is a better and cheaper way to go. The slim is a great razor too. The Rex is made in the US so it’s going to be more expensive. Everyone has a tolerance as to what they will spend, I use Proraso shave cream which budget friendly and quality all around for shave soap. Artisan soaps are more expensive because they are made by hand and small batches are created, that drives the prices higher.

I finally purchased the Rex Ambassador (polished) on black Friday 2023 and have to say it is one of my favorite razors. The shave with this razor is incredibly smooth and very efficient. The craftmanship of this razor is better than any I have ever seen. This may be an expensive razor, but it is in a class of it's own in build quality and shave experience. Most adjustable razors that I own really don't work on the lowest settings, but the Rex Ambassador does. This razor is incredible and a unique shaving experience. Great work on this razor Matt, this is the best of the premium razors I have ever used. Thank you for making this epic razor, there is nothing like it on the market!

Matt, I’m the guy with the dachshund who met you and your lovely wife at the Shave Collectibles Mtg in Cincinnati over dinner back in October 2019. I bought an Ambassador that year after we spoke. There were some issues with it which you resolved. I can testify that you take your lifetime warranty seriously! It’s now one of my favorite safety razors. As a straight shaver, I use the Ambassador on my dome wide open, and never fail to get an exemplary shave! Thanks for a thoughtful, well-designed product!
    All the best,
    Jeff

Excellent talk through! It is not a surprise the Ambassador is expensive. 1. It uses high grade materials 2. It is made in a first world country with higher production costs 3. It has ten individual parts in it's construction 4. It is made in fairly limited numbers.
Is it worth it? Totally! For me it's my only adjustable that I actually use as an adjustable. My Fatboy and Slim good though they may be just stay at setting 9.
One of the biggest selling points is it's build quality and its built to last. In this case you actually do pay for quality.
Thank you for bringing the community such a quality product. Wishing all at Razor Emporium the best! 👍👍👍👍💈🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I've owned my REX Ambassador for just over a year now and it's no doubt the #1 razor in my den. I'm one of those guys that 1.5 and below work for me. I also work in manufacturing so I can appreciate everything you said Matt. It's not inexpensive to produce a high quality product made in the USA and I would look back at my purchase now and say it's worth every penny. If they made me throw out every razor in my den but one, the REX Ambassador stays. Thanks for such a great product that gives you a little joy each day! I need to buy the matching stand!

Just realised as I was leaving this comment I that I left another below almost a year ago! Well, I got my Ambassador XL in Oct 2021 and it has made all my other razors redundant, including my Feather AS-D2S. The Ambassador truly is an amazing piece of kit, well made and worth every penny. As you said Matt, not everyone will agree but for me it does the job perfectly. 1 day’s growth, 2 days growth or 3 days and beyond, just dial it up or dial it down. Saving my money for the Konsul XL now. Who knows it might even make my Ambassador redundant!
Give yourselves a pat on the back from me.

Terrific video. Thanks for the honest comments, Matt. I commend you on the hard work you have done to bring this product to market, and the efforts you have made to get this right. It is clearly a labour of love and a commitment to excellence. I believe it is worth every penny. The build alone justifies the price. But people also need to keep in mind the hours of design and effort which have gone in to this product, which is produced not by a giant corporation but by a small independent. That comes with a price, and that needs to be factored in to value of the product. You do not enjoy the same same economy of scale of a huge company, which helps keep prices down. You are a ‘boutique’ production outfit. I am happy to support you and this product. I love shaving with my Rex.

I have a P1 dated Ambassador, and I’ve grown to love it. At first, I found it wildly aggressive, even at the lowest setting, but that had to do with the fact that I was a relative newbie to DE shaving and used a Feather blade. Now that I’ve refined my technique and paired it with the right blade for me (Astra SP and Gillette 7 O’clock super stainless), it sings like a canary. The craftsmanship, too, is top-notch. Hats off to you, Matt👏🏽. It is one of the best, if not the best Stainless Steel adjustable razor out there on the market.

I use this every week along with my R41 and Rockwell 6C. Coming from an engineering background I can really appreciate the workmanship. The fact it is wider so you don't get sharp edges sticking out the sides is a nice touch. My youngest boy is called Rex, I agreed he can have it when I'm gone. I feel pretty confident it will still be going strong in 30 years or so.

What sold me was the quality of the parts. Explanation of the history of the manufacturing process, for me, was the key selling point. As a Rolls Royce aircraft engine mechanic, I understand the importance of tolerances and quality materials. Being able to take something apart and replace worn and broken items is something that has vanished in modern manufacturing. I know the price point will be a turn-off for many but Made in America is absolutely worth it. Happy Christmas and thanks for all the videos that you have made, I have learned a lot from them. On a side note, My skin seems to have changed with the dry winter air and has resulted in me changing razors. I have been using a Gillette Fatboy but it has begun to irritate my skin so I went back to my Parker 6S and my skin feels so much better now. I have a few adjustables but the Parker seemed to be the best. I even had to change the plate that I was comfortable with. I was using the number 2 plate but had a better shave with the 3 plate. So bear in mind that as your skin changes, you may get a better shave by changing your razor and/or blade.

Just curious considering your stated occupation, have you ever used a Rolls Razor? I have and I liked it. I guess it’s meant to be a travel straight razor kit. They are basically a narrow straight razor on a stick. The cases are really cool looking too. Some made of aluminum with Art Deco design aspects. While I’m waiting for my Rex Ambassador to arrive we could chat about the Rolls.

I’ve tried the Ambassador twice. I bought one and returned it then found a great deal on a used one and decided to give it another shot. I absolutely love the craftsmanship, and that knurling is the best in wetshaving. With both of the razors I had there was this drag feeling when using it. It just wasn’t as smooth as I like. If the option was available to to have a polished top cap and safety bar, I would give it another try. I felt the same drag feeling with a first gen Envoy. Shoot, I would love to be able to buy just the handle to mix and match other heads with it. Great video Matt, really makes me respect the craftsmanship even more. 👍🏻

Matt, just got my Ambassador XL as an upgrade from the Rockwell T2. I am new to wet shaving and I found I needed something a bit more efficient, so I bought the Ambassador. Wow, what a difference!. First off, the aesthetics of razor are impressive. I did notice a scratch in the cap and your staff and I are working on that. I started with level 3, haha, down to level 2.5 then 1.5. Great shave. It is a learning process. Thanks for all your work and help.

I love the last minute of this video when Matt thinks that the camera is not running anymore, you can see so clearly that the Ambassador is his 'baby' and as an engineer and shaving enthousiast myself, I totally understand this. I have a vintage collection (Gillette and Gibbs) and an 'active' collection of only stainless steel razors, but I must admit that the Ambassador and the Envoy are my favourites. Interesting video, Matt, thanks!

Love my Rex. I have the N series and never an issue. Many say it can be very aggressive and like Matt says it provides all variations from mild to wild. Riding the top cap on the aggressive settings helps me with any aggressive razor. The quality and build is second to none. In particular the knurling on the handle is the best in the business!
Congrats on your success Team Rex and Razor Emporium! A razor to pass down for generations.

I just got my Rex Ambassador in the mail, and had my first shave yesterday morning. I used it on Level 1, with a Feather blade and it was smooth, 2.5 pass shave. No nicks, burn, pulling and thats a real accomplishment for me on a Thursday morning. Usually by Thursday/Friday I am red.
I plan on putting this razor through the paces over the next couple weeks (adjusting the setting, different blades, creams) and writing a better review. But the first shave was awesome.

So after 2 weeks, I am still a very happy customer. I have tried several different blades, setting and creams and haven’t had a bad shave yet. I have had some really great shaves though. The fit and finish is great, the lockup is tight and the mechanism is wonderful.
I have used Feather, Derby and Parker blades. My Rex really likes the Parkers; and Feathers were also surprisingly smooth in this razor. Derby was also pleasant, but not quite as good as the others, which is interesting because I normally prefer Derby in my Merkur, Muhle and Boker. But Parker blades seem to be flawless in the Rex.
I have gone up to a 2.5 on the setting dial, and found this to be the highest I feel comfortable. I could go higher, but I don’t really feel the need. I have found that a 2 is great for a first pass on Monday morning, with subsequent passes lowered to a 1 or maybe 1.5. All other shaving throughout my week is done at a level 1. I am generally a 2.5- 3 pass shaver and could probably do 2 with a higher setting, but I have sensitive skin and prefer not to crank the setting up and just touch up the areas I need to.
I have used some different creams and soaps, ranging from Cremo classic, Cremo lathering cream, Taylor of Old Bond St. and a few others on hand. But the best shave I have had yet was with a feather blade and Palmolive shave soap. It’s pretty cheap, like 8 bucks on Amazon and it works great. This razor definitely prefers a little more water in the mix or a little more slickness than I usually use, but it’s all part of the game. I have always seemed to get a good shave with a more “sudsy” mix, but this Rex prefers a bit more substance to the mix. Maybe it’s the weight? Angle? Idk. Figuring out what works best is part of the process.
I’ve also had great results using Art of Shaving pre-shave oil and some Mens Shaving Soap Company lavender soap.
All in all, this is a great razor and I am a very happy customer. My wife has even commented on my skin looking smoother.

I had my first shave with the Ambassador yesterday. It was kinda rough on my face until I turned the aggression down. When I got to my head the shave was very nice. I bought and used some Perma sharps after hearing they paired well with the Ambassador. 2.5 is the sweet spot for me. I don't know if I ever touch anything above 3 though. Time will tell.
The knurling is some of the best I've ever come across. Not one time did I ever feel like I would drop it. I'll definitely be picking up that stand in a few months or so.

I shaving with my Rex Ambassador since last week. And I must say that I'm very happy that I took the plunge. I love the weight and the grip (no way you will drop this razor unless someone knocks it out of your hand or you drop it on purpose). The shave itself was very efficient. I loved my Feather AS-D2 razor. But the Rex did a good job getting a smooth shave on my neck. Something the Feather always failed to do. YMMV. But for me, the Rex Ambassador is worth every cent. I did not got the stand though.

Thank you giving us a great run down on the Rex construction. I don't have a Rex myself, but have shaving buddies who swear by them. I love adjustable razors and the only thing that has stopped me purchasing a Rex is the concern about the weight, I have difficulty shaving with razors over 100gm (just an ageing thing). With my difficulty with using heavier razors I have started looking at Aluminium razors as way to resolve the issue. Keep safe Matt.

I just got two ingrown hairs so bad on my neck, I had to get antibiotics for them. I certainly enjoy my Ambassador. With a couple dozen razors in the collection, it gets MUCH more than its share of usage. Having worked in machine shops as a younger man, I am aware of the difficulties involved. In fact, my patience was tested when the handle's knurling wasn't right and delivery was delayed a bit for my N model.
All in all, a wonderful instrument at a fair price. Depreciation of the currency will always make for sticker shock. Matt isn't selling blades to move FatBoys, he's selling a Cadillac of yore. Pretty much a one time expense for something that will last far longer than that Caddy.

I bought an Envoy and love it - I took advantage of the sale as well but made a mistake and selected the Envoy instead of the Ambassador so I have a second envoy coming ! In the next week or so I will buy the Ambassador - and my Rex collection will be 3! If the Ambassador is anything like the Envoy, it will be superb! Great work!!!

Just gotta say. I love my Rex Ambassador. Just shaved with it this morning. I bought it at the Big Shave S'West in April of 2019. Great razor. My favorite blade so far is the Astra Superior Platinum. I have already tried Feather, Personna Med-Prep and PolSilver in the Ambassador. I'm looking to try BiC Chrome-Platinum and eventually the legendary vintage "new-old-stock" Gillette Spoiler blade. So, I still have some adventures in blade testing to go through. The Astra Superior-Platinum is giving me a shave so good with the Ambassador I almost don't want to try anything else.
My observation, and that I've heard from others, is that the Ambassador razor imparts tangible "blade-feel". And some wet-shavers have their preference one-way or another with either a super-smooth, zero blade-feel shave or one with blade-feel. Others, who typically enjoy straight razors and want a DE that gives that feeling of blade contact likely will enjoy the Ambassador. I myself enjoy razors across the spectrum because I'm an enthusiast. An example of a razor with virtually zero blade-feel is a Merkur 1904 razor. I feel no blade at all with that one.
The Ambassador can either be for shaving enthusiasts or it can be the central razor that a person wants to use for a lifetime and wants "the best". I think the Ambassador has been designed to try and fit that mold. For most who buy it, it's intended to be the last razor you ever buy and use for life.

I would love to add one to my collection but i
just picked up 2 new razors (to me) in the last 2 weeks
I've heard there is blade gap issues in the middle adjustment range
$250 is just to much for me right now
i love the idea of being able to easily adjust the blade gap on the fly without loosening/re-tightening or having to change to a different spacer plate.
I appreciate your work in advancing the 'art' of razors however! cheers to you Matt!

Matt👍👍 Great video and breakdown explanation of the REX Ambassador. I acquired my N1 in early 2018, just had to have the first totally made in the US, machined, stainless steel, adjustable razor. Couldn't be happier, an absolutely stunning example of modern engineering technology using modern materials and design. I think this razor should be highly polished and plated in Rhodium......😉 Thanks brother and I bought the T-shirt.. Enjoy!

Ordered mine today. Can’t wait for it to come in and start shaving with it. The price did have a sting but as someone on a Facebook group pointed out with other American made razors is the adjustable feature on this one means you don’t have to buy additional parts like with non adjustable razors to change the shave.

Being in Canada, I usually like to support local businesses but glad to finally support you in a way (local retailer carries your product) after all the helpful videos you've put out. How have you liked the Rex Ambassador? I also live in Canada and just got in to wet shaving. I ordered the Henson medium and have shaved a few times now and have already started to wonder if I need a more aggressive razor or just go for an adjustable razor. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

    • @UseVisine

@@SmokeybeardAB Hi Pete!:-) You know what, I've moved on from the Rex. I found it too harsh for me at 2.5 and higher! The guy I sold it to demoed (shaved) it at my house and he loved it. I asked him if he found it aggressive and he said not at all! Each face is really different. I loved how it looked but if I didn't like how it shaved, it had to go to someone who'll appreciate it. I'm now using Karve Christopher Bradley razors. Love em! I'm also now inclined to swappable baseplates instead of adjustable baseplates. There's just less potential of play. Just tighter tolerances overall. Of course it helps that Chris (Karve owner) is a machinist and gets the tolerances to the thousandths of an inch. Karve is cheaper too. Roughly $100CAD gets you the razor with a baseplate of your choice. Good luck on the hunt!

I love my Rex ambassador and envoy. I used many razor like 34c,6s,gc68,karve etc. But now in my hand are only two razars, the ambassador and envoy, I also have the stand and wood suitcase. I love its history, the way it came out. You did a really good job. I am sharing this great razor to my friends.
Wetshaving is a rabbit hole. But for me, Rex may be the end.

Congrats! This razor, which I purchased before Christmas, is absolutely stunning. Arguably the best I’ve ever used, and I’ve used a few. It’s a masterpiece of construction. Be warned though, it’s an absolute beast. I have a nice little ‘permanent’ nick on my lower cheek from my first shave!! My own fault though. It doesn’t come cheap, but I couldn’t recommend it highly enough. It’s grade A all the way.
    Super vid by the way!

I thought my Ambassador was too aggressive at first, but after experimenting with different blades and settings I'm happy. Now I do a three pass with settings three, two, one and get a BBS shave. I find a sharp blade like a Feather or Perna-Sharp has less tendency to have any alum stinging. I just wish the XL version was available when I bought mine as I have the Envoy XL and it's perfect in the hand for me. I'm intrigued by the new Konsul but would prefer the longer handle.

Hi Matt, just an update on my experience with not being able to see the adjuster that well on the Rex Ambassador. I have solved the problem with the aid of a red Sharpie pen, in that I used the marker to make a vertical red line down from the razors red dot, ie in the knurling, maybe you should paint one in on future models. I am now finding it much easier after this mod and I must add that the ambassador delivers a great shaving experience and I prefer it to my Envoy or Progress. P.S I have just added your travel case too.

It’s early morning Monday shortly leaving for work. I just want to take a moment to say that I just had one of, if not, the best, most comfortable shave with the Ambassador. I’ve had 6 or 7 shaves with it because the ambassador is a recent purchase. My first shaves I was a little disappointed because I thought it was too aggressive, but that was because I used a feather in it. Well this morning I tried it with a Perma Sharp-MAN, I think I just discovered the perfect combination! This was an incredible, nice, COMFORTABLE, smooth, clean, and nick free shave!
Super nice Mr. Matt-thank you for what you do. BTW, I just recently ordered the Konsul-SO looking forward to it! Have a good day!

Simply fantastic! An engineering feat. A true ambassador paving the way for another engineering feat coming our way to the extreme north of the Norwegian Arctic from Arizona: The Konsul Slant adjustable DE razor. Cannot wait to get my hands, and head, around it. Also love the story of the Razor Emporium and the Rex Supply company. Thinking of how Gillette turned something that worked so well for milions of consumers and turned it into a plastic nightmare of ever increasing number of blades, the Ambassador and the Konsul restore my faith in that producers actually can work with the customers best interest in mind. I thank you for who you are and what you do.

I own both the Ambassador and the Envoy and like both, Matt’s right eyebrow goes skyward with joy, but do I like one over the other? Well the adjustability of the Ambassador gives the fine tuning ability with some blade feel, and the Envoy gives a fixed predicable shave with less blade feel, both are built like tanks, expensive? yes very, but you only get what you pay for at the end of the day. Alll of my vintage Gillette razors have outlived there original owners and are still going strong, my British Aristocrat with its rhodium goodness cost a small fortune when new, both these Rex Razors will be still going strong long after I’m done and dusted.

Based on your comments about the different versions of this razor it feels strange to say that I'm glad I waited to buy this razor. Got mine two weeks ago and it is bar none the best made razor I have ever seen or held in my hands. As a former industrial designer the small details that are present in the machining (perhaps CNC?) especially with the pattern made on the bottom on the top piece and 'sure grip' handle, also by far the best. So nice and chunky. Only things I don't like are that it is very heavy compared to most 'cast' made modern razors and wasn't something I accounted for on my first shave taking a good chunk right under my nose, totally my fault that one with a new astra green. And I wish it was a bit longer on its length, I'll admit I've got pretty big hands by anyone's standards and I find I can hold it with my thumb and two fingers at a time with my ring finger under the release knob. This is sort of why I gravitated towards the merkur 38c when I first started out.
Otherwise a very solid razor well deserving of its price tag. Awesome work Matt and team!
