already have my early bird a question for you Jim i would like to turn a picture into a painting i have luminar 4 luminar ai and luminar neo can it be done by the way love the unscripted vid
Hi Terry and thanks, hope you are having fun. There are not any "painting" type filters in Neo (or previous versions of Luminar really) but if you want a "soft" look then you could use negative Structure a few times (and negative Details too) to soften up the image and create sort of an Impressionist look. But it's not the same as all the options in other programs like Topaz Studio. thanks!
Hi there Jim, Great video… I just installed Neo today and I’m looking forward to familiarizing myself with it. I’d love for you to do a video on output… such as sharpening etc. Thanks!!
Love watching these stream-of-thought edits, Jim! These are the types of photos many of us take and want to improve. I'm a fan of big color too! I just installed Neo and was kinda stumbling around a bit. I was trying to use layers to replicate what I did with Adjustment Layers in Luminar AI, but soon got all twisted in knots in the UI. Time to watch your Neo Layers video...
Thanks Carl, glad you liked this one. As for layers, it's not really true layers functionality yet. You will see if you watch the video. It's mostly just a simple overlay tool, so you can't really do what you want to do with them yet. Thanks.
hi Jim another great video, tanh you for the sugestions, i got today the new luminar neo update and want to see you work on add image layers, blending modes and make collages and also add double exposure effects . keep up the good work and thank you.
Actually Jim, at least for Australia, if you've already preordered and bought Luminar Neo as part of the early-bird program, the full release is already available for those people to use. It comes as a free update. Not sure what it would be like over there though.
Thanks Jordan, good to know. They tend to roll things out across the globe in waves, so it's no surprise it is out already in some areas. I think Australia and Canada get it a day early every time. I guess they like you folks! 😁In the US I suspect it will come out on release day, Feb 17. They do this to ease the burden on their servers I think. Anyway, have fun with it!
Thanks for always helping us along. Just got it and started experimenting and when i get stuck I’ll export and finish with luminar 4 , there are some strange layers on the left side and other details I’m not sure about so anxiously waiting for your tutorials. Thanks for all you do.
Certainly transformed the image Jim with bags of punch. Which version of NEO are you using as you state it's that close? I've had version one since the weekend and noticed the layers + button in top left hand corner is missing in your video. The one thing that just does not work on NEO for me is getting share to work. Each time I scan it say make sure you are on the same WiFi for your PC and mobile, which they are.
Thanks much Ken and this was recorded in the pre-release version. I do have v1 but they asked us not to share anything until official release day. So more coming on Thursday! 😀
Amazing Luminar Neo videos for beginners. Thanks a lot. Any inputs in where to find different RAW Camera profiles or to create our own? Only Luminar default profile is seen. Thanks.
Jim, so many of us are viewing on laptop screens, so all the right panel is QUITE tiny. Could you perhaps be aware that we can't tell where you are going because it's too small to read? And how did you get the total before/after view? Couldn't see how you did that. Great overview.
I've processed three photos in Neo so far, and what I miss most is dodge and burn; it isn't yet available. :( Those tools are an absolute necessity for me while processing. It's interesting they didn't consider them important enough to include in the first iterations.
Hi Theo and yep I am hopeful they bring that back real soon. You could use Develop a few times in place of it, adjusting the exposure each time and masking it in...sorta the same thing.
Hi Jim. Few days ago I received "NEO" but they told me that's Eary bird version. So I have some questions. 1)When can I have the complete version? 2)In Luminar 4, I can use AURORA at the same time but what about "NEO" can do or not? Also looking for your NEO lessons.
Hi John, the full version comes out tomorrow Feb 17. You can send a photo to Aurora but it is not a full plugin, so it does not come back to Neo when finished in Aurora. Hopefully they fix that in the future as it would be really useful.
Are you aware of updates that may be done to the "horizon alignment" tab in Luminar Neo? It does't work well and I used it a lot in Luminar 4 where it was in the lens and geometry tab.
Hi Jim: I have started shooting in RAW file format as I have a SONY RX10iv. I have imported the camera profiles into Luminar using Adobe DNG Converter. However, I have been on your Masking masterclass and I always start my edits in Neo with Develop. However, by using RAW files, I lose the option of using masks in Develop, so any alterations are global. I like using masks for bringing out specific areas, can you explain why I should not worry about not having the masking capabilities in Develop when using RAW? Hope that makes sense!
Hi Mike and thanks. Yes, when you start with a raw file in Develop (called Develop Raw then), you cannot mask, but that is ok. Develop Raw is your "getting started" moves with the photo: light, white balance, optical corrections, etc. You can then use Develop a second, third, fourth, etc and each time (after Develop Raw) it is just called Develop and you can mask as normal. It's just the first time with the raw file that you cannot mask. I hope that helps and thanks.
Hi Jim, wish NEO would come out already! All of your videos are working as if you are taunting us with a thick BBQed steak under our noses and not being able to take a bite!! Putting that aside, there are two green artifacts in the reflection of the masts in the water (left side a third of the way up). They seem to be on the original photo but after the editing they really stand out. How do you suggest to elimate them? Thanks !!
Haha sorry about the taunts David, that is not my intent but rather just trying to give some ideas and demos about how it works. Everyone gets it on Feb 17 (tomorrow) so you are about to be served that sizzling steak. Yes I did notice that, I think it may be something floating in the water so I would use Erase to take it out. Thanks!

Till now I have seen all your videos. At the beginning of this one you were very enthusiastic about the "real" start of Neo next Thursday, but ... I have Lum 4, Lum AI, and subscribed when Skylum announced Neo in 2021 but what do you think about all the problems announced in Luminar Insiders Daily Digest - You have told us you're working with 64GB - I have only 32GB - Do you recommend to upgrade to 64GB? - Thanks for your response.
Hi Eddy and yes I have 64GB on my Mac and things have been working quite well. I have seen some mentions of issues with the WIN version which I know they have patched a couple of times already. I am hopeful that settles down quickly for everyone on a PC. And I don't think you have to have 64GB to get good performance. I have heard from others that have it running with less RAM.
I have already written in another video of Jim that I criticize some things about version 1.0.0. However, I have to admit, and I have to be that honest, that the tools that are available so far work completely smoothly and without delay on my Mac Mini M1 with 16GB RAM.
I’ve been messing around with Neo and I really don’t like the removal of the history tab. That is way more useful than the tools being dumped into the edits tab. With the history tab you can cycle between different slider settings within a tool to compare different looks. Also, when you click on tools in the edits tab you see the photo as it was when you were using that tool, not as the photo is currently. They should bring back Luminar 3's workflow since we are back with a modular tool system. In L3 you can group together duplicated tools. The edits tab is just in order of use.
Thanks for the feedback and please be sure to share that with the Skylum team too. It's definitely different and takes a little getting used to. Thanks for watching.
Although purchased, I haven’t as yet downloaded Neo. I’ve noticed that you didn’t do anything as far as correcting the leaning buildings (i.e.; geometric lens distortion). To me, this is a glaring omission in this edit. Skyscrapers leaning over in a photo are acceptable, but a 5 story structure just looks unstable and yells “lens distortion”. Does Neo have any tools for correcting this distortion, or will I need to do this in another app? I also note that one commenter states that there is no history tab. Do they mean no history tab or actually no history function at all? On the surface, this omission would seem to be a real editing nightmare.
@@pixeldoc7119 yes there is lens distortion in the Develop filter. History is now on the Edits tab, where they show all the filters used in the image edit. So you can go adjust them or remove them as needed.
@@pixeldoc7119 there is a lens distortion but there are no manual tool to tilt the image about an axis like in Luminar 4. Luminar 4 had sliders to in a way, “tilt shift” the image to deal with those issues you may get with a wide angle lens. I’m hoping they bring that back.
Hey Jim, I know this is not your fault but I got to vent, I got the early release on Luminar Neo and I can't even get the thing to load! I am on a 6 month old Windows 10 computer with all the bells and whistles cost $3K and this thing will not go past the logo at the start up, just sits there, for hours!!!! I checked my task manager and it is pulling no resources at all, in other words, it is frozen. I think you said you are a Mac guy so you probably will get a chuckle out of this. Just wanted to put out the word and did not know if others had issues. I know this is not the focus of your forum and I am sorry. I am a big admirer of you and have learned a lot from you, just a bit disappointed that something I have waited for and wanted is not working out. Is this not the lesson of 2021 or are we living in 2021-B!!!!!???? Well thanks for taking my call, and I did contact Skylum support. I just needed someone to talk to, thank you for all you do, I appreciate it!!! Moonpie
Hi Moonpie and so sorry to hear that. I do know there have been 2 patches on the WIN version already, so please make sure you have the latest. I had comments from others that indicated the latest patch did the trick. Hopefully this gets resolved quickly for you so that you can enjoy editing. Thanks for stopping by and watching, I appreciate it.
@@JimNix I will try to find where these patches are. I have already heard back from Skylum, they got pretty good support, sent them some screen shots etc. so will see what they say, thanks!
Great video. But it seems to reinforce my negative impressions of Neo. I have been playing with Luminar Neo and so far I really don't like it. It appears that each time you use a tool it creates an "Edit." (You had 10 edits in this video.) The edits are not labeled and if you tend to wander from tool to tool you can get a lot of edits. In my playing with the program so far these "edits" make it extremely confusing. In one of your prior videos with Neo you suggested experimenting and then deleting your edits prior to actually working on the image. That may work to some extent. I have a tendency to work with a tool and come back to it. Generally I don't want to work on the edited image, but modify my original edit. With no names on the edits, you almost need to set up a spreadsheet to figure out what you are doing. I am very afraid that these "Edits" are what Skylum is delivering to us as Layers. It ain't the same thing. I think Skylum does a great job with some of its tools like sky replacement, accent AI, etc., but each version seems to make the work flow more of an obstacle than a tool as compared to the prior version.
Hi Steve and thanks, and sorry that you are feeling a bit negative about it. I totally get that the multiple edits can get confusing, and for sure no one wants to create a spreadsheet to keep up! That would feel like work LOL. It is a different workflow for sure and takes a little getting used to. I am hopeful my videos give you some ideas and that you end up enjoying Neo quite a bit. I am finding a lot of power and capability in it and am enjoying it thus far. More coming soon. Thanks!
"Neo is coming real soon," he says. Lol. Sure Jim. So is Christmas. I lost faith in Skylum but definitely not in you, Jim. I love the title to this one! I especially love the unscripted and RAW. Have you ever considered doing a live stream edit? I think it'd be super cool.

@@andreask.6872 ah ok, I was thinking you were from Germany (another country I love - I basically love Europe in its entirety - and oh those German beers are good!). Sounds like a fantastic thing to be able to holiday in Denmark that many times. I hope to return and see more of both countries.
@@JimNix Maybe we can coordinate our travel plans. I will be in Denmark for three weeks from the end of May to mid-June. In the case that you should also be there, I would like to invite you to a Danish beer 🍺
@@andreask.6872 oh I wish but I won't be going to Europe anytime soon, at least I don't think. I would love to though, sounds great, even though those Danish beers are about $15 each! 😀Maybe next time!
"Good enough for govt work" ha ha ha. Good one Jim.
haha thanks Marcus
Thank you Jim
thanks Barry
@@andreask.6872 awesome to hear it is working smoothly for you!
Hi Jim! It is normal that when i move the curson and i close it, the photo remains modified but the cursor is on the left as if I've never used it???
Hmm that sounds a little odd, and does not happen for me.
Added to my NEO playlist!
Awesome, thanks and I hope you enjoy it.
Nyhavn you can translate it to Newharbor. An old area of Copenhagen. Thanks for your videos
thanks for watching and for the translation!
good job, Jim,thank's a lot for your teaching.
thank you for watching Jean-Francois!
@@MrMoonpie001 ok great, glad to hear you are communicating with them already
I see you are using the latest Beta, Jim. Still watching your workflow to gain some tips, because, well, I need all the help I can get. Thanks again.
thanks for watching and Feb 17 is the release date so you will see v1.0 from then on - thanks for watching!
I like playing with clown vomit.
Really like your edits on this one!
haha thanks much Leon!
Thanks for the videos
thanks for watching!
Hi John and thanks much, I appreciate that. It is actually releasing on Thursday this week, Feb 17. So it is REAL SOON now for sure. 😀 I have thought about doing some live streams here, just need to figure out how to do them LOL.
Sorry Jim. not for me. The yellow building has become Kodak yellow, Yuk! American taste I think. And for me the shadows are still a bit too dark and the cream building on the right could be a touch lighter. Thanks for the video, though!
haha no worries Ray, I don't expect everyone to like all my edits - but I do appreciate you watching and thanks for the feedback!
Thank you Jim. Perfect. :)
thanks much Jim!
Hi Jim . sick of fixes for Neo , just asked for credit
Hi Terry and so sorry to hear that.
Does AI still do anything that NEO doesn't? Seems almost all, if not all, AI functionality was ported over to NEO. Wondering why I would still use AI.
